    I thought this a long video for what was being displayed. Either way thank you for the work you did. (:

    Is it just the video or is that sonnet cart on an angle? The slits that hold the card up so it doesn't sag, it looks like it should be in the one above it? Anyways, nice video.

    Hi. Please help me. I have seen multiple reviews saying that Sonnet usb card doesn’t work in the new Mac Pro because the socket sits right against the aluminum horizontal slat that is a part of the Mac Pro chassis. Therefore you can’t plug any cable into the slot as it is recessed and flush with that horizontal slat. Is that true??? Thanks.

    Have you found that the Sonnet M.2 card produces any noticeable fan noise? I'm considering various 4x M.2 carriers including the fanless OWC Accelsior. Noise levels are important to me in a sound recording and film production studio. Thanks. [BTW have also heard that the Sonnet fan might be disconnected without any undue issues).

      None that I can hear, but as I said in the video, the mac pro is silent compared to the air conditioner I run in my office to counteract all the servers and machines I have running, so I probably wouldn't be able to hear it if it did make noise compared to the Mac Pro fans themselves.

    Sonnet must have sent out a lot of review units. I'm suddenly seeing lots of videos about this.

    • @VinceCantrell
      @VinceCantrell  4 роки тому +2

      It’s because the Mac Pro just dropped and this is one of only like 2 or 3 total options for Mac PCIe storage expansion currently. Mine definitely wasn’t a review unit.

      @@VinceCantrell Interesting! Well, from what I've seen elsewhere (Snazzy, to be specific), it should be possible to put any standard PCIe M.2 adapter in there and have it work. I don't think you have to use Sonnet's card.

    • @VinceCantrell
      @VinceCantrell  4 роки тому

      Technically correct, but with it being Apple’s OS that has to interface with the card, you’d typically want to go with something that touts guaranteed MacOS support, like products from Sonnet or OWC.

      It’s is it weird that I only want a Mac Pro for the high bandwidth storage like this?

    • @VinceCantrell
      @VinceCantrell  4 роки тому +1

      Not at all; that's actually the main reason I upgraded. I had the 2013 model 12-core with dual D700's before so graphics performance wasn't enough of an issue for it being worth the upgrade, but the storage speed limitations were killing me compared to the 3.5Gbps R/W speeds I have on my newer Windows boxes, so to have that on the Mac side was definitely worth the upgrade for me.

    • @VinceCantrell
      @VinceCantrell  4 роки тому +1

      You don't realize how much difference there is between 3.5Gbps R/W and 1.5Gbps R/W on your system drive until you've experienced it... then it's hard not to have it lol

    I am considering the j2i you have in your system. The product only ships with one drive and therefore doesn't support raid out of the box but I see you have installed a second drive. Do you know if it supports raid with a second drive installed?

    • @VinceCantrell
      @VinceCantrell  4 роки тому +1

      It just passes the drives through to the OS, where you could RAID them using the built-in Raid Assistant, or using paid software like SoftRaid. - I will say though that you'd typically want the exact same drive as what came with the J2i if you were going to raid them. Mine came with a Toshiba MD06ACA800V, which appears to be discontinued or difficult to find at least.I found one for $288 but that's the cheapest I could find it: www.memory4less.com/toshiba-surveillance-8tb-sata-6-0-gbps-hard-drive-md06aca800v

    • @VinceCantrell
      @VinceCantrell  4 роки тому +1

      No because Apple’s secure boot with the T2 chip is tied to the onboard chips. But you can run apps or anything else that needs the speed off the faster storage volumes.

    Why is it external?

    • @VinceCantrell
      @VinceCantrell  4 роки тому

      I was wondering that myself. I think it's because it's removable... vs. the onboard nvme drives which aren't. Although the sata internal drives form the j2i show as internal, could just be because they're direct on the motherboard tho.

    I don't like that this card has a fan on it. Seems unnecessary when they could design a card that's passively cooled by the case's airflow instead.

    • @carholic-sz3qv
      @carholic-sz3qv 4 роки тому

      do you even know that SSDs can get really hot?! the cooling is important to preserve the life of the ssd and also maintain the speed

    • @Noah-Lach
      @Noah-Lach 4 роки тому +2

      Le Chat Botté You didn’t read my comment. If two Vega II chips can be cooled passively by the heat sink on an MPX module, it’s certainly possible to create a similar design for an SSD which produces infinitesimally less heat.
      This product simply doesn’t take advantage of the Mac Pro’s thermal design.

    • @carholic-sz3qv
      @carholic-sz3qv 4 роки тому

      @@Noah-Lach of course the MPX module has giant heatsinks to transfer heat easily

      Le Chat Botté well and yet there‘s cards out there like the Highpoint 7101A that can function without the fan on in the wind tunnel of the new Mac Pro. Since this card just existed before, it obviously wasn’t updated. I‘m tempted to buy one but then again I think it would be smart to wait a few months until someone comes up with a more tailored solution for the 7.1 hopefully.
