Could you please explain or point me to the right place to learn about chunk size versus performance? Is there a 'rule of thumb' for chunk size to the size of files to be moved? I'm planning on using a m2 mac mini as a RAID/NAS together with an OWC nvme 4 slot enclosure.
@bonaventura_AKA_ben - for NAS the configuration would be different to even more optimize it for your use case but that's out of scope of a single YT comment - you can book video meeting with me on link in video description and I can help you with that personally
Without parity like in RAID0 if your data/file to write is smaller than the chuck size only a part of the chunk is used. The rest is left unallocated and usable for other files. If data is bigger it's will be split in chunk sized parts and use as many as needed. The last partial chuck is not usable for other files. In raid0 the first chunk is on disk1, the second on disk2... this why chunks not filled are not usable for other files. On array with parity (= security, you all know that raid0 is unsecure ...) like in raid5 , if file is smaller than a chuck this data is written on one disk, and parity takes a partial chuck on an other disk. For data bigger than a chuck it's the same as raid0, with your file on multiple disks, except that for all chuck you have a parity block on an other disk. In raid0 you don't loose space (only your data in case of catastrophic events) in raid5 with 4 disks like in the video you loose 20% of space with 256K and up to 33% with 128K chunk (twice the number of chunk versus 256K so twice more parity block) In raid0 you dont care about the chuck ONLY to match "electronic and buffer" capacity transfer.

This is a very informative video. I'm curious if you've had a chance, yet, to try out the new Sonnet 8x4 NVMe card. I recently got one, along with a new 2023 Mac Pro, and tried to get it working with 8 Crucial P3+ 4Tb NVMe cards (which are on the approved list). No dice. The computer doesn't indicate that the card is there. So far, Sonnet tech support has not come up with an answer for me, so I'm afraid I'll just be sending it back for a refund. My question, though, is what to replace it with. The MP 2023 has Gen 4 PCIe slots. I'd like to get a Gen 4 NVMe card, to take full advantage of my Gen 4 NVMe cards, and Gen 4 PCIe computer. The only other option I can see is the OWC 8M2 (which unfortunately has a fan, and I don't need the extra noise in my recording studio). If the Sonnet 8x4 card I have is just defective, I'm still a little worried about getting a replacement, because Sonnet says the card is not compatible with the initial release of Sonoma. I need this computer to just work and not have problems with operating systems. So, what would you do? Get two Sonnet 4x4 cards, or maybe two OWC 4M2 cards and take the performance hit of the Gen 3 limit, or go with the OWC 8M2, and hope the fan isn't too noisy? I'd love to see you do a review of the new Sonnet 8x4 card. Maybe you could get it working.

just got mine from your amazon links and this new drive has read of 13965 and write of 13175! Fun little process. I noticed the ssds didn't lie flat and curved a bit. did I do something wrong?
Do not use this card on a mac pro 2019 with WD Black SN850 X SSDs! They are not fully compatible with Mac OS and will eject themselves from the desktop. Sonnettech released a pdf where one can see which SSDs are fully compatible with the Sonnet 4x4 Silent Card
@@morgonaut well I ordered a 2tb version from amazon on your links so I hope you get a tip! will be here Wednesday, I hope it works! Are these speeds actually faster then the MAC's own internal drive?
I know you did, but all my life the fastest drive is the one inside. of course all my others were usb and this is PCI so we shall see. can you put a link in the description about where the drive speed programs are?
I’ve bought same exact card on MP 7,1 with 4 Samsung 980. But results are so different than yours… I’ve tried to change Sonnet card and upgrade Disk firmware but always same result into black magic test …
@Max Carella - I own several of these Sonnet card and I tested in it many different SSD models and results were on par with my measurements in this video. What's the difference on your side? I would never buy Samsung 980 for it. If you want good or ultimate performance then you should buy good/ultimate disks 😇
@@morgonaut with black magic test, 5272 on write and 1069 on read, with ATTO results seems to be near to yours. I’ve tried also to test single disk and numbers are all the same on every disk. If I make a raid with 2 disk at a time, black magic give me about 5k in read and write. I’ve tried to contact sonnet support without any helpful response. They told me to look at the best benchmark. 😮
I can't judge what you do wrong when I was not there when you configured it, but for sure something is wrong on your side and I don't think it would be a problem of the Sonnet card. In 99.99% of cases it's user error 😇 You can book a video/remote meeting with me and I can have a look at it
can't agree with you, it's the same principle as the 2019 one just with better guts 😇 And for the performance it offers is many times cheaper than the 2019 one!

@@morgonaut Thanks. I decided not to risk it, and I'm sending the card back/ If I can't get the next card operating, I may book a session.
@LeeBlaske - OK, as you wish :)
is that sonnet bootable
just got mine from your amazon links and this new drive has read of 13965 and write of 13175! Fun little process. I noticed the ssds didn't lie flat and curved a bit. did I do something wrong?
and amorphousdiskmark has 3488/3405 for my system disk. what a difference!
you need to read manual :) you need correct thickness of the thermal pads for your specific disks
@@morgonaut are these double sided? they seem to be to me, but I don' know about them much.
watch my previous video ua-cam.com/video/FBgceprCAiY/v-deo.html where I showed detailed shots of it
@@morgonaut that was a different board. but I do have a layer of pad on each side but in the middle not fully touching.
@boblimaorchestra - I said clearly what disks I recommend so if people would just follow my advices they would never have problems
I have the same Mac and my mouse quit as soon as I installed Ventura. I notice you are also using a wired mouse. LOL.
sure, because the Apple Magic Mouse is piece of crap 😇
@@morgonaut Why didn't you like it?
because as I said it's piece of crap. What you expect from mouse? Precise and easy movements! And Magic Mouse is all but that 😂
what caused it to go from 5.9 to 11? what did your last speed checker do?
each workflow/load/dataset is different
@@morgonaut well I ordered a 2tb version from amazon on your links so I hope you get a tip! will be here Wednesday, I hope it works! Are these speeds actually faster then the MAC's own internal drive?
thumb up for using my link 🤙 And right in this video I say how may times this array is faster than any Apple disk(s)
I know you did, but all my life the fastest drive is the one inside. of course all my others were usb and this is PCI so we shall see. can you put a link in the description about where the drive speed programs are?
just google the names of the apps I used
I’ve bought same exact card on MP 7,1 with 4 Samsung 980.
@@morgonaut with black magic test,
5272 on write and 1069 on read, with ATTO results seems to be near to yours.
In 99.99% of cases it's user error 😇 You can book a video/remote meeting with me and I can have a look at it
@@morgonaut ok, Can I book video/remote on your site?
@Max Carella - that's what's written in all my video descriptions and what I say in almost each video
are the addlink s95 dramless cache?
it's written on their website which I linked in video description
Yes it has Dram cache - DDR4 @2666 Cache
@Kevin Chou - Hi Kevin, good to see you finally on youtube so you can interact 😇
Can I install macOS on this array?
@faisal_al_agha - I recommend you to better listen what I say in this video and read video description where I gave you all you need 👿
The 2023 Mac Pro is pathetic, doesn't come anywhere close to the greatness of the Intel Mac Pro.
can't agree with you, it's the same principle as the 2019 one just with better guts 😇 And for the performance it offers is many times cheaper than the 2019 one!
@@morgonaut it's not about the performance, it's about the upgradability and expansion(which is there in the new Mac Pro, but *apparently* no support for GPUs), anyways good for you if you like it.
can't imagine why you would need additional GPUs alongside with M2 Ultra ones which can address almost 200GB of video memory 😇 There is not a single consumer GPU which would be able to do that!
I have the same config with the same PCIe card with Samsung NVME drives. Sometimes the drives are not mounted after exiting from deep sleep
sleep never work even on real non modified Macs, so I never sleep any of my Macs for decades
@@morgonautthere is a thread related to Samsung NVMEs on macrumors. I though it was the Sonnet card, but it seems related to Samsung drives
