  • When the Mac Pro became available for purchase a few weeks ago, we bought a base model and have since been demonstrating upgrades with third-party components for those interested in boosting their ‌Mac Pro‌'s capabilities without having to shell out for Apple's upgrades.
    We covered upgrading the RAM in a ‌Mac Pro‌ in our last video, and today, we're demonstrating how to add additional SSD storage using one of the ‌Mac Pro‌'s PCIe slots.

    Actually this is a bit misleading. The real reason you saw faster transfer speeds when transferring the Folder from your internal drive to your PCIe drive is not because the PCIe drive is faster, its because the Read speeds of your internal drive are nearly 2x faster than the Write speeds as shown in your own internal Disk Speed test. The transfer speed will always be bottlenecked by whatever device is slower. (In this case the internal drive).

    You failed to mention you have to take the cover off the side slot, under the thunderbolt/USB Ports. If that is not explained some viewers may try to force the 4m2 into the slot not knowing that out side cover needs to be removed.

    many of these are great on the classic mac pro.
    which can now actually use pcie based thunderbolt, usbc, nvme, current GPU, etc.
    some will require hacks, but not most.
    with the 12 core 3.33-3.46, not being that much slower than the 2019 mac pro base model.

    I think it's pretty important to say that that SSD is actually 4 SSDs in Raid0, and if any of its SSDs fails there is no chance of recovering any data from the whole volume.

    • @tonytangpro
      @tonytangpro 4 роки тому +5

      daschundwoof agreed. I also think SSD failure rate is lower, and these OWC flash drives are over-provisioned by 7%-giving even higher reliability and lowering the risk of failure. Always have a backup of any data even if you have a RAID with data redundancy, which is not true backup.

      Yeah I agree. It seems like a worthy option for a person needing storage that is that fast.

      Tigerex966 you can use it as four individual SSD drives (each is 25%) of the total capacity.

    • @ezrashanti
      @ezrashanti 4 роки тому +1

      I'm probably getting one of these and it comes with softraid software. You can configure it as raid 5 so you get 75% capacity, raid 0 speeds, and 1 drive can fail without losing data.

    How did you configure the OWC drive? RAID 0 or concatenated JBOD (lower performance)? Or did you just benchmark against one of the 1TB M.2 drives, which would lead to lower performance. Did you use SoftRAID, or create disk sets in Disk Utility? OWC SoftRAID currently requires you to disable secure boot in T2.

      Trusteft 256GB config has a single SSD module installed whereas 1, 2, 4, and 8TB configurations have two modules. Apple’s 3.4GB/sec sequential read/write performance is based on a tested 4TB configuration. So...

    Theres a bottleneck in your tests. If you get another OWC accelsior 4M2 and do the same test, but having one of the accelsior being the control, you should see much more significant and accurate results. Ie. OWC > OWC < OWC vs OWC > Internal < OWC.

    I can see you use slot 8 in this video at 03:28, why? I mean Slot 5 is fastest because of ×16 lanes, or Slot 6 or 7 ×8 lanes. You can get more speed another slot.

    • @TheThreeTechs
      @TheThreeTechs 4 роки тому

      kazuhiro ishiyama good catch. Not sure if they changed slots before doing the tests, but slot 8 is only x4 lanes and would give suboptimal performance since the OWC card is x8 lanes. Slots 1 and 3 are directly connected to the CPU and will yield the highest performance.

    I was able to beat that with a 2009 Mac Pro five years ago. ua-cam.com/video/HrmNtd9_U0E/v-deo.html
    And that’s using Apple’s single threaded AppleRAID driver. With SoftRAID (if you can get it to work with your system), it’s faster and stays fast over time. HOWEVER, be aware, keep the m.2 drives cool or they WILL slow down significantly during reads and writes. Glue a small heatsink, or control a fan that’s blowing air past it. Look into Amfeltech, a Canadian company that’s been building custom high end PCIe cards for Mac Pros for a long time. They are the real deal. Your welcome, btw.

    Internal storage of 256GB is fine. It's _JUST_ for the OS. In a serious machine, there will always be serious data far beyond what "internal drive" could offer. I prefer a small (tiny) main boot disk and then add my own storage (internal or external) as I require.

      alliejr just realize that the 256GB config comes with only a single SSD module. 1-8TB configs come with two modules, and the Apple performance spec of 3.4GB/sec seq. read/write is based on a two-module 4TB config.

  • @movieblues4614

    Highly misleading review. The read/write speeds of Apple upgrades are more like 3KMB/s. The 8TB upgrade clocks 3.5KMB/s reads. MacRumors is benchmarking against a single Apple 256Gb stick. Given that we are talking about upgrades, this is close to fraud.
