- History of Curly Perms
The history of long lasting curls dates back as far as the late 18th century. The first long-lasting hair waving technique, invented in 1870 by French hair stylist, Marcel Grateau. Who invented the marcel iron. This is not a curly permanent but the start of curling hair with direct heat. Most women wore their hair long at the time, & Marcel used heated irons to produce a stylish wave as an alternative to the curls which were in trend at the time.
A wave machine, producing even longer lasting results was premiered by Swiss hairdresser Karl Nessler in 1906 in England. Nessler wrapped the hair in a spiral around rods connected to a machine with an electric heating device. Sodium hydroxide was applied & the hair was heated to 100 °C or more for an extended period of time. It took six hours to complete. These hot rollers were kept from touching the scalp.The first two attempts resulted in completely burning the client’s hair off & some scalp burns. The method was improved & his electric permanent wave machine was used in London at his own salon
In 1928, Marjorie Joyner, an African American stylist, patented her dome shaped helmet which used an electrical current to heat hair that was clamped in one-inch sections. She developed it to help African American women who wanted to change the tight curl of their hair to a wave, although it also proved to help with Caucasian women’s hair, adding curl to their straight hair. Joyner also patented a scalp protector to make the procedure more comfortable. Her rights to this & to the “Permanent Waving Machine” were assigned over to Madam Walker. Traditional Ammonium Thioglycolate(Thio) Curly Permanents
The Jheri Curl was a permanent wave hairstyle that was popular among women and men of color during the late 70s thru early 90s. Invented by the hairdresser Jheri Redding who also was co-founder of Redken in 1960 & Jhirmack products in 1968 and in Nexus products in 1979. The Jheri Curl was the first curly perm that was created for tightly coiled hair, made from Ammonium Thioglycolate & special additives that would have to be added to the perm solution and neutralizer. Among these additives were EFA oils, Magnesium, Vitamin E oils … The Thio combination was applied only once to the hair while the stylist rods the hair on the perm rods &then an oxidation neutralizer is applied after the chemical on the perm rods are rinsed & blotted dry. This was a single processed perm.
After the process, the Jheri Curl requires that you wet the hair, spray in an oil moisturizer and then use a daily activator to boost the curls. After the Jheri Curl was invented other companies created their own version of curly perms for women & men of color.They were considered Jheri Curls only because these curly perms were too created for tight coiled hair. But, the technique was altogether different from the original Jheri Curl. With these processes the chemical is applied once to straighten the hair, rinsed & applied again while rodding the hair on the perm rods to form its shape. Then an oxidation neutralizer is also used. So, needless to say it was a double processed perm. In 1978 Gina serviced the original Jheri Redding Jheri Curl & was considered the queen of the Jheri Curl. Her clientele drove from around the State of Conn. to have their Jheri Curl serviced by Gina. Gina continued to use Jheri’s method even after he discontinued his Jheri Curl. Gina created her own curly perm for textured hair by using different perms and additives to create her own curl. As time went on & the Natural Hair Movement changed the way women of color styled their hair. Women were now learning how to maintain their locks and their natural hair was growing and growing healthy. She knew this method would not retain health and length because there was no way to isolate the previously treated hair each time a client came back for a retouch as with the other types of perms on the market. So, that when she put her mind to it & created the GinaCurl
In 2012 the GinaCurl was created by Stylist and Educator Gina Esposito Rivera. A stylist in the hair industry since 1976 & the business entrepreneur of Hair’s Talent since 1985. The GinaCurl can take 4C hair to a soft, bouncy curl, retaining length & health to the hair. Never over processing the hair because of her unique one of the kind formula and technique.
The GinaCurl, a curl reformer is also Thio based perm but Gina worked night & day with her chemist to create an incredible perfect one of its kind blend of components to achieve amazing, healthy long lasting results.Gina conducted a trial & error experiment on three clients that agreed to participate. She held back advertising her technique until it was proven to retain length & moisture in the hair.Once these three women came back for their second retouch Gina knew that her technique was a success & very different than the others.

It’s been a little over 2 weeks since I got my Gina Curl and I am still in LOVE! I wanted to tell you all the things I noticed. Feel free to share it if you like all I ask is that you leave my name off. Also, what do you think about a private Facebook group for all of your Gina Curl clients. It could be great support for Gina Curl newbies (just a thought). On Instagram one of your clients shared Cantu Curling Cream with me and that has me totally on the right track.
1. My hair is SO soft
2. Detangling is ridiculously easy
3. Hair sheds normally but it seems to shed so much less since I got my Gina Curl. I know I am losing much less hair than my old wash days.
4. No more whole days dedicated to doing my hair
5. I look forward to wash days now.
6. I use so much less product
7. I can scrunch it a lot for a lot of volume or a little for more of a wavy look.
8. My husband loves it! He fully supported my natural hair journey before but he loves how soft it is. I actually let him touch it now with no fear of him messing it up. After all the work I was putting in before; him playing in my hair was a no go. He loves that I hardly wear ponytails anymore. I was for forever stuck in some sort of ponytail when my hair didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to. And for ease when I just didn’t want to deal with my hair; as a result my hair on my edges was not growing as fast as the rest of my hair.
9. No more twists for bed at night. Yay!
10. Unexpectedly, I spend so much less time on my hair daily and I have so much more free time. Now granted you can put as much or as little time into your hair as you would like. I was doing way more than I wanted for inconsistent results.
11. My hair looks good EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
12. I didn’t realize I habitually watched UA-cam videos looking for best way to achieve the results I wanted. The best product combos for the best results. Now, I watch them because I just like watching them not because I have a hair issue I want to resolve.
13. Gina is so respectful and knowledgeable. Her team was so welcoming. And that’s from someone who takes a while to warm up to people.
This has been so freeing/lifestyle changing for me. You have no idea. Before I got my Gina Curl I thought that new clients that had just gotten theirs were carrying on a bit too much in these videos (LOL). It can’t be all that. I am so glad I got over that skepticism and what I perceived to be a negative that people were saying (it’s just a Jheri curl and are we doing that again?). Now having my Gina Curl and I don’t care what you call it. I LOVE IT! We drove almost 11 hrs to get it and it was worth every penny. I only wish that I had done it sooner. I would do it all over again and recommend it to anyone.

First, thank you Gina and the team for everything, especially for being so pleasant and inviting; such a rarity nowadays! This is amazing. I have watched so many videos to try to inform myself. I know we must send in individual consultation forms for evaluation, for a personalized treatment.
I am a fully transitioned natural (3 years; very thick 4c texture). My only problem area is my hairline, as I previously have had permed hair that has left me with a good amount of breakage, and extremely thin short straight pieces in the forefront area of my hair (mainly near the temples) that seem stunted in growth (assuming it may be chemical damage). I do remember seeing that the treatment should not touch scalp, but those pieces are so short that it would seem inevitable to avoid the scalp in those problem areas, or even be sufficient for rodding.
Before starting this process, I would like to know: Would I still be able to get the GIna curl despite this issue?

I have a 13 year old daughter and she has 4c hair. It's been hell and back trying to manage it. My first thought was the wave nuvoue. I loved those back then. Made my hair grow. I stopped going to salons when one ruined the bunch for me. I thought this would be a good idea for my daughter's head just to loosen and manage her hair. Hi Gina, I’m so intrigued with your method. I had some questions if you don’t mind? I’ve been wondering that when getting this treatment, are we still able to wear braids/wigs? Are there certain products we can’t use, such as gels to slick the hair down for pony tails etc? I love styling hair and I’d be so eager to do cute styles after getting this but fear I will mess something up if I touch it
Braids and wigs yes ( however we highly recommend removing them and combing through 2x a week minimum to remove old breakage from tangling with new growth) most products are fine, you really need to avoid proteins, keratin, rice water, and onion juice. can I get braids and do different styles like pony tails and things if I get the Gina curl
Yes as long as you follow our after care instructions which include not sleeping in styling product, combing your hair out using conditioner at LEAST 2x a week, and not wearing a tightly slicked style too many days in a row as this can stretch out the curl

Some people get a liquid applied to the hair while it is being rollerset (it’s not neutralizer). What is that?
It's a heat protectant.

What if you get a Gina Curl and you decide you don’t want it after the 6 months. What would you have to do?
You can switch over to a Straight Variation or you can just let it grow out, by continuing our aftercare

No not at all. As long as you don’t over do it with heat you should be able to grow out your GinaCurl with no problem if you continue with our aftercare.

Can you straighten your hair with a Gina curl? Like a silk press? What about color? Also how does it hold up for swimmers?
You cannot straighten using any heat. Roller Sets would be acceptable, but the more you straighten it the more the curls will loosen. You can't swim in chlorine or salt water or for 2 weeks after getting the GinaCurl, but other than that it's a permanent process and springs back up as it dries.

Semi-Permanent color is acceptable, but it must be done 2 weeks before the GinaCurl, OR if you scheduled 1 week before the date of the appointment, you want to wait until 2 weeks AFTER your slot. We recommend OverTone highly for the GinaCurl.

Yes we can process the GInaCurl on two inches of gair

You can switch from a GinaCurl to a straight variation. You can also switch from a straight variation to GinaCurl IF AND ONLY IF you do not use an iron on your hair and minimal heat when blow drying.

Hello! Are you able to get i-tip micro links after getting this curly perm? Are you allowed to blow dry your hair straight with this curly perm? I saw in another comment you mentioned that you cannot sleep with products in your hair. If you do a wash n go, can I keep the styling products in my hair for a few days until I style my hair again?

With the GinaCurl you must wash and detangle at least 2x a week so micro links would not be an option. Only clip ins are allowed and must be removed before bed. You cannot sleep with *gel* in your hair it must be rinsed out, any products labeled "leave in" are fine and a touch of curl cream is fine, but we also want to avoid buildup of product so you should still rinse some of it out every few days even if it's not a wash day.

We do not recommend using a flat iron. heat damage will cause natural hair to become straight it will straighten the GinaCurl as well.

What does the gina curl smell like ?
It smells like most permanent wave solutions during application, the GinaCurl does not have a smell after the hair is washed.

The GinaCurl starts at $550 for 2-3 inches of hair. If your hair is longer and thicker from there, we will evaluate your cost to reflect that.

So do you have to keep processing the ends when getting a touch up? Or are you maybe using some type of protectant so the ends aren’t being over processed?
No That's the great difference from GianCurl verses the rest. The chemical is never applied to the perm rods so we are able to protect the previously treated hair with protection.
