Actually, you CAN have it without sex - people with cold sores for example. I have a friend who’s 9 yr old has it from sharing chapstick with a friend with a cold sore. I’m also a rarer case. I don’t have genital OR oral herpes. Mine is on my knee (skin scrape tested and verified). Apparently wrestlers can get it from skin to skin and my dermatologist says she has seen this too. Before gloves dentists would get herpetic whitlow. I work with an STD educator group and we’ve seen people have it on their shoulder. Just be careful saying this because it can add to the stigma. ❤
Hey Dr. Lane! About a month ago, my girlfriend got a cold sore around her mouth. She and I have been around each other, cuddling as couples do. But we haven’t been kissing (besides me kissing her forehead and neck a little but it wasn’t near the sore) and we haven’t done anything sexual. Since she’s had the cold sore, I think we’ve seen each other a few times. Lately I’ve been stressed out about it. Washing my hands a lot, making sure to stay clean. But, during this stress, I’ve been getting all of these pseudo-symptoms on my face. It’s been like this for a week almost but there has been no redness on my face or lips. Mainly just had dry lips, slightly itchy face, and irritated/watery eyes. Now, starting last night, as well as few times today around my groin it’s been feeling like it’s almost chaffed or a bit hot. There’s no visible rash, redness or sores. I think it’s probably just from stress and reading about genital herpes. I was wondering if I could have your opinion, to put my mind at ease?
