This song is hundreds of years old, going back to the pirate days. It's an old Irish folk song that's been covered countless times, about a bandit that steals money from Captain Farrell, brings it to his girlfriend, then gets betrayed by her, who ends up killing the good ol' Captain and going to prison. There are different versions, in one it's Captain Pepper and the girls name is Jenny. Metallica covered Thin Lizzy's version, but punched it up a bit.
I don't think he actually kills Captain Farrell. In order to make this a viable modern rock song it had to be dramatically shortened and rewritten to the point of being a "cliff notes' version of the original; wherein Molly (Jenny) pours water in our protagonists' pistol loads. He shoots both barrels, but nothing happens. Had he actually killed the Captain he might have escaped.

"Whiskey in the jar" was an old Irish drinking song... Thin Lizzy made a rock version of it back in the 70's and made it a hit. Metallica decided to cover the Thin Lizzy version in 1998 to honor their late bassist Cliff Burton, who cited Thin Lizzy as a huge influence. Burton was a huge fan of (Late bassist/ vocalist) Phil Lynott (They both passed away the same year - 1986). This was from a collection of Metallica covering their heroes titled 'Garage Inc.' in 1998... included were also covers by Motorhead, Diamond Head, Mercyful Fate, The Misfits, Blue Oyster Cult... as well as some unusual choices like Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

This song is actually a classic Irish Folk song that has been covered by a lot of bands, probably most rock famously by Thin Lizzy back in the day, but there are also some newer versions including this one. The American rock versions have varied the story quite a bit but generally It's a story about a Pirate or Highwayman (robber) who stole a lot of money from a Captain to win the love of a Lady (Jenny, but called Molly here). But the Lady who took the money pretended to love him, but set him up and rendered him defenseless (traditionally she replaced his powder with wet powder) and able to be captured without much of a fight (In the original version the Captain is not killed and captures the Singer). He dreams that his brother who is in the army will come and rescue him before he meets his end in prison. Believe it or not, despite it's dark themes this is a drinking song that was popular in pub sing a longs back in the day. And the Irish are not shy about singing in pubs and almost everybody takes part.. It's part of our culture. Of course as an Irish American who rarely goes out drinking, I can see the virtues, but it would take a lot of ale to get me to sing in a bar. I mourn the culture I never had. Americans don't understand and visitors from Ireland might sing some songs in a pub and not even be that great of a singer, usually passable tho. As many have said this is an old song but you just have to react to the the Thin Lizzy version which was the basis for this Metallica “cover”. Thin Lizzy over all should be reacted to, “The boys are back in town”, “Jailbreak”, “Dancing in the moonlight” are all great songs. Edit: I just realized that you have reacted to all these songs basically and I have also seen them:
You also reacted to the Thin Lizzy version of this song. I think this is only the second time you've done two versions of the same song (the first being "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart").
I was gonna say that they already did the Thin Lizzy version but didn’t remember. Then all these commenters telling them to do it got me confused, like my memory can’t be that bad? I think I even commented on their Thin Lizzy reaction for them to do the Metallica version. I guess since they don’t remember hearing the other version, people assumed they never did a reaction to it already.
This is an old Irish folk song I got to hear performed in a pub when I lived in Ireland, great experience if you ever get the opportunity to go to Ireland go it’s like Oklahoma after a spring rain year round
So envious. My family has been here in the US since 1916. My grandfather kicked off in 1984, and he was the last living relative to have seen the old country. Keep promising myself "Next Year...", but we all know how that goes....

So many great songs from Garage Inc. Whiskey In The Jar is an old Irish folk song from the 1600s. You should check out Astronomy from the same album next.
There are references to the Story of Patrick Fleming who was a highwayman executed in 1650, so most historians put its origins to then. First recorded in 1950 as a Irish folk song, many folk versions including The Chieftains. Thin Lizzy was the first to give it a real rock version, Metallica included it 29 years later in a cover album. My best friend, 20 years my junior, first heard the Metallica version and searching out the Thin Lizzy version totally fell in love with it, he then became a Huge Lizzy and Phil Lynott fan. I first heard the Lizzy song probably in the 80’s on a Anthology album after the band broke up, but it was my friend playing it for me when I totally fell in love with it. If you have not heard the Thin Lizzy version, you should, specially the live version, or for folk version The Dubliners from 1967. I was not aware The Grateful Dead had a version, I have to check that out myself. I do enjoy the Metallica Version, Kirk Hammett purchased the ( Greenie ) guitar from the Estate of Thin Lizzy Guitarist Gary Moore, so he could use it playing it for this song live. Personally I prefer the Lizzy version, but they are all good!
As someone who frequents Renaissance Faires, the first time I heard this song was by a group called The Poxy Boggards. There is a female response song as well that I have only ever heard sung by The Merry Wives of Windsor. (Yes both of these groups have albums.)

Traditionally the song has 7 verses, the robbery of Captain or Colonel Farrell or Pepper, taking the money home to Molly or Jenny (I prefer Jenny because it rhymes with "it made a pretty penny") , going to bed and having his girl set up an ambush against him, the ambush, being put in prison and breaking out, seeking out his brother in the army for help, and the epilogue. It is in the grand tradition of Irish songs about robbing government officials.
There have been some really great covers of songs in everything from folk, country, and jazz into the Metal/Thrash genre. Cat Stevens did a song back in 1970 called "Wild World" that went to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA that year. It's a staple on any "soft rock" radio station. There have been a lot of covers of it, but my favorite is the 2001 version by the punk rock supergroup Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies. It's almost completely faithful to the original done but done in double-time and with electrical instruments and a punk drum fill instead of acoustic.

Metallica is one of the best metal bands at storytelling, almost all of their hits are great stories, Fade to black, Master of puppets, Welcome home (sanitarium), One, The Unforgiven
Next from Metallica i recommend 'Fade to Black', and from their S&M live album: 'Hero for the day', which is done with a symphony orchestra backing them. For a good story type song: Dream Theater's 'The Best of Times' is an amazingly emotional and beautiful song. Definitely checkout the back story for that one.

"Whiskey in the Jar" (Roud 533) is an Irish traditional song set in the southern mountains of Ireland, often with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry. The song, about a rapparee (highwayman) who is betrayed by his wife or lover, is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs and has been recorded by numerous artists since the 1950s. Whiskey in the Jar Composed Circa 17th century. according to Wikipedia.😀
Jay... Amber... Please react to "Anesthesia, Pulling Teeth", by Metallica... It showcases Cliff Burton, who was the bassist for them... He tragically died in a bus accident on September 27, 1986... You gotta do some more earlier Metallica to see where they started, and how they progressed... "Hit the Lights", "The Four Horsemen", "Jump In the Fire", "Seek and Destroy", "Whiplash", "Ride the Lightning", "Fade To Black", "Creeping Death", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Trapped Under Ice", "Escape"... Then try the 2 instrumentals they have.. "The Call of Ktulu" followed by "Orion", then do "Master of Puppets", " Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "The Thing That Should Not Be", "Battery", "Desposable Heroes", and "Damage Inc"... That will take you through the 3 albums with Cliff Burton... One of the best bassists ever.. He passed away at 24 years old...😓❤️ RIP Cliff..❤️❤️
Hearing you mention Mary Had a Little Lamb as a rock version makes me think of Korn’s Shoots and Ladders. Now there’s a rocking version of nursery rhymes. 😂
This song is SO OLD, (we used to re-enact the French and Indian War, and were commended for our authenticity by some guys who were British Historians) and we sang this song around the campfires - and IT WAS CONSIDERED OLD in the mid-1700s!

Love your reactions. Have a blessed day 🤘🤘🙏🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘
Guys you have to do Sad but True❤! It’s absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is one of my favorite songs that they play at most of the big Renaissance Festivals. Metallica does in a way that it still sounds renaissance-like because they kept some of the Old English words in the song, but they put their rock twist on it.
This song is an old irish hymn and old irish folk song... great tune
This version always gets me going....full volume, can't play it loud enough.
Do Luke Kelly and the Dubliners singing it and you'll have a hat-trick:)
Metallica makin' Mama smile on this one! 😎🔥🤘🎸
Whiskey In A Jar by Metallica charted on Billboard chart on April 17, 1999 and it was on the bubbling under chart and peaked at 124 for 1 week
Love this song and this version and Metallica's Official Music video for it! Had it on repeat on the jukebox at my local! What was I drinking? Whiskey!.... then 1 bourbon, 1 scotch and 1 beer! LOL!..... Metallica played this at a castle in Ireland - it went OFF!
So, this song is hundreds of years old, and still being covered. lol. This is my favorite version.
Great old Irish song almost 500 years old. Done several times.
Metallica is one of the best metal bands at storytelling, almost all of their hits are great stories, Fade to black, Master of puppets, Welcome home (sanitarium), One, The Unforgiven
Hope you guys check out Blackened by Metallica ....hard as it gets!!🤘🤘
Next from Metallica i recommend 'Fade to Black', and from their S&M live album: 'Hero for the day', which is done with a symphony orchestra backing them. For a good story type song: Dream Theater's 'The Best of Times' is an amazingly emotional and beautiful song. Definitely checkout the back story for that one.
The Thin Lizzy version(You have to hear), is what gave birth to this version... Metallica does some great amped up covers... Check out their version of the classic Queen song, Stone Cold Crazy.
I love your hair girl. Man I so love you guys and y’all discovering my high school music. Rob squad family keep rocking out!!!
Heh! Metallic does a sea chanty - and does it EXCELLENTLY! Love this song!
Love Metallica 😀 Great Song 😀
"Whiskey in the Jar" (Roud 533) is an Irish traditional song set in the southern mountains of Ireland, often with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry. The song, about a rapparee (highwayman) who is betrayed by his wife or lover, is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs and has been recorded by numerous artists since the 1950s.
Whiskey in the Jar
Composed
Circa 17th century. according to Wikipedia.😀
Jay...
Gah, Love this song! Probably the "danciest" song in Metallica's catalog. Love the dirty groove; the guitars are smokin'!
The video for this is fantastic 🔥🔥🤘🏼
This is an Irish song, I saw Metallica live in Ireland at 16, you can't imagine the roar, when they played this song.
You two are Awesome🤘🤘🤘
Metallica is such an incredible band!!!!! They are this generations Led Zeppelin.
This song is SO OLD, (we used to re-enact the French and Indian War, and were commended for our authenticity by some guys who were British Historians) and we sang this song around the campfires - and IT WAS CONSIDERED OLD in the mid-1700s!
Daughtry … no surprise
Metallica is always at their best when they're RAW, when they just plug in and play.
My wife's favourite!!! This was on the garage inc album which they also cover Queen's stone cold crazy which is great
An old Irish folk song hundreds of years old. That’s the Irish storytelling for you!
I love yall. Great channel guys.
Molly is literally a ball & chain! 😎🔥🤘🎸
Some live Jethro Tull “My God” from the “Isle of Wight” concert. Also Emerson lake and Palmer “From the Beginning” from their Trilogy album. You can’t go through life having never listening to these songs. You will love them.
I was a DJ in a popular online social game years ago, this was one of my most requested songs , i litterly bounce in my chair listening to it. You guys should listen to the folk version covered by many different groups. I agree this is my favorite version of all time :)
