Yeah you’re right. As a ten year old kid, this song is one that shaped my whole life. It basically got me into music completely. This song and Epic by Faith No More were the two songs that got me into music. This song had a profound impact on my views on life, on war, critical thought. Literally life shaping.
As a Veteran that song has been hitting hard for 30 years...A suggestion try Ozzy Osborne with Motorhead " Hellraiser" 30th anniversary great song and video...
“Death has a dignity all its own”. I didn’t really fully understand it when I was younger. But as I’m much older and have seen much more life and death, I now fully understand it. And it’s incredibly true.
My Uncle sacrificed himself in the Korean War by jumping on a grenade and he saved his own troops. The first time I heard this song he was the only thing I could think of.
I don’t know if this was my first time hearing heavy metal, but it’s the first I remember for sure. I was about 7 yrs old when the video premiered, and it was obviously unforgettable. Phil Anselmo’s mom was close with my family back in New Orleans, so I got an education in metal over the next couple years after that seeing their early Pantera shows with him. But this song was my metal intro for all intents and purposes.
Dude..led zeppelin invented heavy metal come on man show alil respect my man black sabbath was there as well..now don't get me wrong Metallica kicks ass fo sho but metal was around years b4 tallica..i gotta go hump a leg catcha later.
I agree with this. I was 10 when this came out. I wasn't a metal fan. I liked rock, I liked hip hop, pop, but never got into metal. Then one day my cousin (who also wasn't a metal fan) said, "have you heard about that song One by Metallica?", We bought the And Justice For All cassette that day, we had to hear what people were talking about. After that I was a metal fan.
More like they brought this style of Metal (Speed/Thrash) to the world. Metal had been around, in various forms. since the 60's with Black Sabbath, which to me is Metal in its purest form. Then you had bands like Led Zepplin, KISS, Van Halen, Motorhead, and Quiet Riot, leading into the 80's Metal Explosion. Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Ratt, WASP, Def Lepard, and many others helped to make Glam/Hair Metal the standard for a decade. Metalica and Megadeath introduced fans to a whole new genre by the late 80's. And by the early 90's, for the most part, it was over. While many bands remained wildly popular (especially Metallica) Heavy Metal's era was over. BTW, I think I was 19 when I first saw this video on Headbangers Ball. And I can still remember the looks on James Hetfield's face when they performed this song at the Grammy's.
The story is intense. The movie is downright scary, and the book will give you nightmares. Metallica did an excellent job putting a classic antiwar story to music.
It's so amazing watching the two completely different reactions to this song, simultaneously. Jay is absolutely rocking out and head banging to the music, while Amber is completely falling apart and melting before our eyes because of the story. I totally get both reactions, and both are just as pure and real as the conflict of emotions that rise up in me while listening to and watching this. Please don't take this the wrong way, because it comes only from a heart of compassion...I just wanted to give Amber a hug while watching this. If I have ever seen someone in desperate need of a hug, it was her struggling to get through this song. God bless you both for being the loving, caring, classy, uplifting people that you are!
Music, lyrics and video are a masterpiece all together, but one could ‘enjoy’ those seperate. Jay is enjoying the music like I did the first years, when I was only 11 or 12 years old. But I didn’t speak English back then and the video wasn’t on Dutch tv. The song is great, but it’s about a horrible subject and to the point. Amber is really listening.
This video absolutely blew up MTV when it debuted. Metallica had resisted doing music videos throughout their career up to that point, and when they finally relented and decided to release their first music video, this is what they presented to the world. It was a game-changer for metal music on MTV and it put them on course for a whole new chapter in their career. It is a stunning piece of (short) musical cinema, IMO.
The movie clips are from an old movie called, Johnny Got His Gun Today. He was blown apart and his jaw was blown off. The movie is mostly his thoughts like it shows here. The nurse and doctors eventually realize that his frantic head movements are actually him using Morse Code and they are able to communicate with him.
Johnny got his gun was required reading when I was in high school. I’ve read it more times than I can remember. Dalton Trumbull was charged as a spy after writing this book
She is amazingly and warmly sympathetic. People confuse that with empathy. Empathy is actually a relatively new term. Sympathy is when you feel for another and react to that. Empathy is sort of a negative thing because someone claims to actually BE in someone else's pain which is basically impossible without the experience of it. An example would be, being sympathetic to the pain and suffering a solder returning from the war is going through, but if you have not been in war yourself there is NO WAY you could be empathic to them.
Well done hanging in there Amber, specially when you can easily put yourself in someone else's shoes, makes it hit harder. I applaud you ma'am, your reaction was stronger than most, I still get teary eyed when hearing this one. Awesome song!
Amber Metallica always has a deep message in their songs. It's the reason their music has endured so long. This song is designed to hit you hard and make you think, but basically it's an anti-war message. That we should rethink why we support war and realize that what happened to this man is not just an unfortunate event, but something we as a society chose to engage in. Metallica is using the shock value to challenge our glorification of war. Thank you for sticking with it. Look at what they say in their songs first and you will appreciate their music much more.
The video playing in the background is from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" About a man severely disfigured from war and the psychological state he languishes in. It has a very strong anti war message as well as the trauma the soldiers face in war.
My Grandfather a WW2 a veteran and Mother, Cousin it painted knew that movie. I saw it and it was a sobering reality check that veteran's are not nameless faceless POW's MIA's. You are owned locked stock and barrel with no fucks given. My Mother doesn't regret her time so much as time lost. If you know, you know.
As an army vet with 2 deployments I understand this song in a very real way. When I saw Amber start to get emotional, I lost it and the tears flowed freely and I'm not ashamed. They so beautifully put emotions into this song that helps others understand what it can be like when we get back home. A large part of us stays in the war zone and flash backs make living back home difficult at times. Thank you both so very much for your love and respect of the military, it's greatly appreciated. I would like to suggest fade to black, there's a version set with saving private Ryan as the back ground, you won't be disappointed
When you said "a large part of us stays in the war zone" it immediately reminded me of a Vietnam vet I got to know when my mom was in a nursing home near the end of her life. He once said "Sometimes the part I left behind tries to reach out and pull me back. It can be hard to live with. But then sometimes the part of me that came back tries to reach out and drag what I left behind into this reality. That's what really scares me because while I didn't come back the same person I left as, a lot of what got left behind is something I never want to be part of me again."
My dad is a Vietnam vet dying of cancer. My son is a twice deployed vet. This song hit hard even before I gave birth to him. Now my son is a police officer and it’s doubly hard on U.S soil. Don’t think first responders don’t feel this too because they absolutely do. Love to all who serve and all first responders 💙❤️💙❤️
I was 13 when "creeping death" was released. My very progressive church with an extremely progressive youth minister used the song to teach about the book of "Exodus" and the passover. Metallica was never just about the sonic boom of their sounds alone. Their lyrics, almost always told a great story too. Combined together, sound and lyric, and you get some of the best music ever written.
So what you guys saw in the video, and basically what the song is saying, is based on the 1939 novel and 1971 film of the same name called "Johnny Got His Gun". It's about a WW1 American soldier who accidentally steps on a landmine during battle. The explosion leaves him critically injured: All four limbs, his jaw, his eyes, his nose, and his ears all blown off. But he is still conscious. And through his mind, while drifting between reality and memories of his childhood with his father and girlfriend, he starts growing insane and wants to kill himself rather than spend the rest of his life trapped in a useless body with no arms and no legs, and unable to move, see, hear, or speak.
Props to Lars on this one, he banged out some sweet drums here. Saw these guys in Minneapolis a couple of years back. When they started playing this song, you could see a plane landing at the local airport. It looked like a copter landing in an LZ. It was intense. War is hell. WWI was particularly so. I appreciate Metallica paying tribute to the vets of that war.
Yeah they're truly adults. Didn't eyeroll "omg this is so angry" and turn it to ASMR or coloring books to heal the trauma that was hearing metal for 15 seconds.
Sending love to every soldier that struggles with ongoing physical/ mental issues due to military service. You are loved❣Mettallica made us feel every emotion, and as always they are Metal Masters!👊
... and it's an amazing coincidence that our government is struggling with getting our vets the help they need. Our vets gave their all for this country, and deserve all the help they need!
As a vet, served 2 deployments with the 82nd Airborne division out of Fort Bragg N.C. thank you for being an American worth serving. I'm fond of telling my guys and others that served that we signed up to bear these scars and mental wounds so our loved ones and fellow Americans wouldn't have to. You'll be amazed at how much of a positive effect it has when you say a simple thank you to us. We're usually sheepish and quietly say your welcome, but inside that lifts us up for days and weeks knowing our sacrifices weren't in vain.
Disposable Heroes was another heavy (but not as much of a direct hit in the "feels") anti-war one on their previous album, Master of Puppets, and before that on Ride the Lightning, there was For Whom the Bell Tolls. Metallica made sure we knew they were not anti-American with their delving into the horrors of war with Don't Tread on Me on the next album, the black album.
“One” is always a very hard song the first go round. Because you’re so focused on what the soldier is trying to say. When you realize he’s begging for death it hits you. And as Amber pointed out as a parent, mothers more so, hearing someone cry out for their parents brings it close to home. Amber you got through it better than I thought from reading this video title. This is what’s so amazing about music. It can make you feel a ton of emotion every time you hear the same song. Music in general can set a mood or bring you up or down depending on how you feel. It can bring back great memories or make you suffer through bad ones again. Nothing else can do that in my opinion
My brother died from a drunk driving accident in 1987 6 weeks after graduation actually buried a day away from my 4th birthday… he was in a coma and the drs told my mom he was brain dead and they agreed to pull the plug, when the preacher at the hospital came to the room to pray with my parents before pulling the plug my mom said one tear came down my brothers face…. Growing up I always found this song hard as it related to my brother probably not brain dead but aware(it was the 80’s and we’re a small town, so medicine wasn’t what it is now)…. I always have a hard time with this song.
This is from an amazing novel by Dalton Trumbo called Jonny got his gun, the movie was inspired by the book. This song was inspired after bandmember read the book. They just used some of movie to create the video. Read the book if you want the full story. It's quite possibly the best anti-war piece of literature ever written! Beautiful, scary, heartwrenching and eye opening. This is one of my favorite Metallica songs and how I discovered this band. I read the book and heard there was a band that wrote a song about it! WOW! I was blown away.❤
As others have pointed out, it uses clips from the 1971 movie “Johnny Got His Gun” which was based on a 1939 book of the same name. I read the book in a Literature of War class in high school but haven’t watch the full movie because I’m still haunted by the book. Metallica actually bought the rights to the movie so they could show the video without any royalty issues.
I've never seen the movie (other than clips in the vid), but this is the only book I have ever read twice. Once in high school (inspired by this song) and again in a "Madness in Literature" class in college. It is still one of my favorites and the most compelling book I have ever read.
@@eljobo3258 it is a rather old book with some controversial elements and it really depends on what they taught. This was a very heavy subject matter for upperclassmen in our Literature of War class around 1986. It is a very good and essential book but it also “haunts” me, knowing his fate.
@@eljobo3258 I just googled it. Jay teaches geography and coaches sports. Amber was a physical education teacher. The book wasn’t very mainstream and unlikely for them need it for their education degrees unless they were minoring in something like history, politics or social studies, though geography can be related to those subjects.
Master of Puppets- Metallica. many headbangers think this is one of the best songs EVER and it’s sooo good. Guys love to see your reaction to this classic!
The part where Lars Ulrich is wearing out the snare drum is replicating machine gun fire. If y’all ever get a chance to see them in concert, you have to go. By far and hands down the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
The whole "Ride the Lightning" album is FIRE!!!! Please listen to that... "One", is awesome as well... Really anything off the 1st 5 albums totally ROCK!!!!
@@eldoc2020 I was referring to the song"One", that they were watching... The 1st 5 albums, "Kill 'em All", "Ride The Lightning", "Master of Puppets", "And Justice For All", and the "Black" album, are all awesome, and rock....
LOVED how Amber described it as “beautifully dark”…..LOVE that….you definitely took the words outta my mouth….Amber, you’re making me proud as a metal head myself 🤘🏽🖤🤘🏽🖤🤘🏽🖤🤘🏽🖤🤘🏽🖤
I grew up listening to Metallica and watching this video and was never really affected by it, but watching you guys today and seeing this video now in my late 30's is absolutely no mistaking the emotion I feel.
This song and Unforgiven, both just grab ahold of my heart and squeeze until I can barely breathe. Both have amazing music, but when combined with the very deep and powerful lyrics, both of them impact me like a kick in the ribs from a horse.
I’ve never seen the movie “Johnny Got His Gun,” I was watching MTV when this video PREMIERED IN 1988. But only just now have I realized what a good actor the soldier is. Damn.
Everytime I hear those drums going in the last half. It sounds like they are doing an amazing job at portraying gunfire. Both the instrumental and the story really pull you in and the combo is perfection!!
My father was force to go Vietnam at 17, a child, scared to death. He lost his leg and had multiple other injuries but survived. I can’t imagine being a kids from the city and being dropped of in the middle of the jungle and handed a gun. He was a Marine and fought on the ground up and personal. The worse thing about it is he was called a murder when he returned. What people didn’t understand is, he never wanted to go, he even fled once and was quickly caught. He survived not murdered. This song touches me so deep ❤️❤️✌🏼✌🏼
As a Marine he was in a place he did ask to be but was doing his duty. Civilians failed to understand he did not set policy, but they did thru elected officials. I served during that time but missed Nam. I as most vets do support free speech even such as this, but it has responsibilities. This man served his country whether he supported that policy or not. A serviceman doe does not get to choose his duty. God bless your father and thank him for his service.
At 17 ??? That's a f*ckin' disgrace!! Sorry for my words, but that's criminal. Johnson and Nixon were the worst and the people behind them much worser! To send kids to war is something the Ayatollahs of Iran did and they were severely criticized for it! The hypocrisy of the US Government, it's unbelievable!
I don't think nobody was ready for this song, but it is still one of my favorite by them. This is a very deep song and y'all also need to check out "Janie's got a Gun" by Aerosmith. It also is a very deep song about a subject that nobody at the time wanted to talk about. Stevin Tyler and Joe Perry ( the lead guitarist) wrote the song and made it work and become one of their monster hits.
This is one of Metalica's gut wrenching songs ever, they bought the movie, so it cannot be used by anyone else, and honestly, it is my favorite song of theirs...
I think it was less a matter of preventing others from using it, and more so they didn't have to pay royalties every time the video was played. It was just cheaper in the end to buy the movie outright.
This song always brings a tear to my Eye, one of the many reasons is this was the album that was Recorded after Cliff Burton tragically passed away 😢 So I always looked at the Album “AND JUSTICE FOR ALL” as an Album dedicated to Cliff’s memory….He would have wanted the Band to Continue even when he was gone….RIP Cliff, You’ll always be part of METALLICA 😢🌹🪦🎸
Amber feeling this so hard is something I really appreciate as a metal fan. Too often non-metal people focus on the beat, the riffs, the voice but rarely on the message under it all. It makes me very happy to see how she reacts to a lot of these songs,
PTSD can make you feel this way. My husband was deployed 4 times. His last time hit a roadside bomb. His brain was shaken. He lost control of his emotions. This song hits home I'm sure to many soldiers.
Out of the entire catalog that Metallica has, this is my ABSOLUTE favorite. The only song that I can think of that can get you deep in your feelings and make you rock out at the same time. Nobody is ready to hear this for the first time, I've been listening to this song since I was a boy and I'm still never ready to hear it
Lol, that song was lazy writing/playing by the band for an obvious radio play time cash grab (as was The Unforgiven). It's basically the reason why I stopped listening to them after that album. Kill 'Em All to ...And Justice for All are the only relevant albums.
Proud of Mama! The song is written specifically about the character in the movie, makes the themes that much more intense, the song on its own doesn't have the dialogue, I suggest Orion for the next one, it's an instrumental, absolutely beautiful song
And that's the thing for me about rock/metal, it's how the music makes you *feel* The music tempo and speed and tone all signify how the man is "feeling." This is what makes metal great.
She just summed this up the best way i could describe it.. "It's beautifully dark". Alot of people dont notice the church style chorus to the words "Now the the world is gone im just one, oh god help me,.. Hold my braath as i wish for death, oh please god wake me". Which is purposeful.
You guys should react to more Metallica… "Master of Puppets", "Creeping Death", "Battery", "Nothing Else Matters", "Whiplash", "Fade to Black", "Seek & Destroy", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Disposable Heroes", "Blackened", "Harvester of Sorrow", "Enter Sandman", "Sad But True", "Wherever I May Roam", "My Friend of Misery" 🎸🤘
Love you took the time to listen and appreciate this song. The realities of war are harsh and devastating. We should not turn away from the suffering. We should not hide from it. Grieve with our fellow humans, speak out against war and advocate peace where we can. We cannot rid the world of suffering but should never ignore it. Don't feel I'm expressing this well... If you haven't already listen to "on the turning away by pink Floyd" and "under pressure by Queen". Love peace and happiness to you and your family.
This was the band's very first video. Hell of an introduction. The lyrics were perfection. The band even in their stance is showing the pain & anger of the situation. I worked at a used book store when this was released & sure did snap up & read a crusty old copy of Johnny Got His Gun. I know people love Enter Sandman as the premium but for me it's One.
Mmm guys this song makes me think when the war heroes come back home and they are not the same guys all I have to say is that if you have a family member that come home please help them as much as you can they need as much support as they can get 😭❤️
This cd is in my car right now….gold standard of metal, still killin it today…love Metallica 💕🤘🏼✨ You would both love orion, it's an instrumental and it's absolutely gorgeous!
@@brianmelendy1194 I guess I wasn’t clear, I meant that the BAND is the gold standard of Metal…their ‘best’ song and album are infinitely debatable 🤘🏼💕 but just so you know, I have a master of puppets T-shirt, that CD is also in my car lol and for me, it’s almost impossible to name a favorite, but the one thing I know for sure is that seeing Metallica live back in the ‘90s was definitely one of the highlights of my life.
This song is what I think of when people say they don't like or understand metal (heavy metal, hard rock, the even more artistically brutal subgenres). There are times when it's the only thing that makes sense, and finding musicality in darkness is insanely intense. And yeah, cathartic. I'm pretty much past my metal days (tho, dang, those concerts were memorable) but Metallica classics can still take me back. Suddenly feeling the urge to dig out Turn The Page and Unforgiven (II, I think, today.)
For most of my life (i'm late 50's now) I've had people ask "why do you listen to that crap ? It's just noise" Having watched a lot of reaction channels now over the last 5 years, with people from very different cultures and musical tastes appreciating, if not absolutely loving what they are hearing, I feel totally justified in my long-held belief that this music ranks amongst the greatest music (and lyrics) our species has ever created.
"There are times when it's the only thing that makes sense, and finding musicality in darkness is insanely intense." I've never read a better quote to explain why I listen to this music!!
@@Andy-ng9lz While I think your comments are perhaps just a tiny bit hyperbolic, I will say that Metallica holds a firm and well-deserved spot up there on the list of "important" music.🤘
This song is a perfect example of how a genre like rock or metal or country or rap music can work best to express a thought or emotion. Metallica can climb into your mind and take you for a ride. Loved it.
Great song, really long movie (Johnny Got His Gun 1971) but terrifying subject matter. Stevie Wonder's reaction to this song when they played it live at the Grammy's , especially when it kicks in - startled him "Kill Me, Kill Me over n over an over again"
This song is emotionally moving for any veterans, no matter how many times one hears it. Five Finger Death Punch and their Wrong Side of Heaven, or their cover of Offspring's Gone Away; are also worth checking out.
I'm so glad you're checking out more Metallica!!!... Some of my favorite by them are: For Whom The Bell Tolls, Master Of Puppets, Orion, Halo On Fire... The list goes on and on!... 🤘
This song and video introduced me to Metallica when I was in middle or high school I believe. Then I heard the black album and became a fan. Though I had heard of them I never heard them on the radio and I never had the $$ to buy albums then. Now that I’m older I can :-). They are always on road trip playlists.
Metallica is one of the very few "heavy metal" bands that I like. I want to give credit to my ex-sister in law Dee for insisting that I go with her to a Metallica concert. This was her band and she told me about this song and played it for me before we went.. it was fantastic live and they had a big screen up and played this video during the song. Sadly, Dee passed away in December.. she was a character.. never met a stranger, and changed my life in profound ways. God speed my friend.
I was born in 1994, I'm a die hard metal head and rock music lover for as long as my memory goes. One is the first metal song I remember hearing, I heard it on a local music TV channel back in 1998, my life changed since that. As a kid I didn't understand the message or imagery behind it, but the music caught me from the very first second. Everytime I hear that song, see the video or watch people discovering and reacting to it it's like I go back in time to when I was a lil' 4 year old kid, time flies and it's been an amazing ride thus far. God bless ya'll keep on rocking 🤟🏼
Amber thank you so much for expressing that pain. You added a depth to this song I've never experienced before!! and like many of us, this has always been a stunning song for me!!!
You BOTH responded to this song as many have/do, EPIC reaction and probably the best I've seen for this song. For myself I rarely have the same respond to this from TOTALLY rocking out or getting DEEP into thought that moves your heart and soul ..
Another heavy subject song and music video is "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam. As educators, it'll probably be extra impactful on you guys- watch the uncensored version, if you ever get around to it.
This is my favorite song by Mettalica because it has the strength and power of early Mettallica but there is more to it than most of their early sons. It is more musical. Just a better piece of writing words and music. The opening really does it for me. This is not just a simple thrash metal song. It is much more.
Had to read the book, "Johnny Got His Gun" in High School English class and I'll never forget it, (I was a Vietnam Era kid). He was injured in the war with no arms, no legs, no face - no way to communicate, but he could hear everyone around him. He finally realized he could tap out Morris Code with his head and an old battle nurse finally realized what he was doing...😱😪🤧
It had an eerie ending because it didn’t resolve. He apparently lived on indefinitely feeling isolated and helpless and we aren’t given any idea what became of him. I was struck by the fact the book is only from his perspective. I’ve seen thd movie and it’s better in a way than the book because you at least know what’s going on beyond his perspective.
I love this song!! I get alittle worried when people hear this for the first time they won't get it, but you guys felt the emotion. One of best lines for me is ' fed through the tubes that stick in me, just like a wartime novelty' then you see him being paraded around as a sideshow freak. Very powerful and a great representation of the horrors of war!! Bravo guys for taking this song on and getting the beauty of it. 🔥🤘🔥🤘🔥
Hell yeah!!!! This was prime Metallica back in the 80’zzzz….this album(…And Justice for All) is probably their darkest album. Definitely my favorite by these metal giants. Definitely try to react to “Blackened”, “Dyers Eve” “Harvester of Sorrow” or “Eye of the Beholder”. All cool songs & very thought-provoking 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
*Amber, I'm with you on this one. I saw Metallica in '83 before their first album was released...this was back when Cliff Burton (bass guitar) just joined and Dave Mustaine was still in the band. This one still gets to me. I find myself rockin' to it....but with tears falling down my face. Please don't let it sour you on listening to it over and over though. We all need to remember the price of stopping those who want to take your freedoms from you. And to be grateful for those who had the 'conviction' to fight for it for us all...and paid the ultimate price. This '71 movie, of the '39 book: Johnny Got His Gun, is a tough one to watch. ♥U all*
My favorite song from Metallica. I first heard it when I was 15. You can feel in the music the desperation and pain from main character. Makes me tear up everytime. Fade to Black is another favorite of mine.
Such the rabbit hole u exposed her to. Metallica is notorious for diving into hard , or emotional topics. And the lyrics are powerful. They run the gambit. Thoughts of suicide, anti war, false religion, drug addiction, corruption in government, they have no filter on their thoughts. And they should not. Who said thrash metal was just screaming? Its more deep than that. And they convey the feeling soo well through the instruments. Liked the 1st reaction, loved the 2nd with u both. ❤️
This song is one of a select few that really evoke an emotional response. I mean yeah, all music will make you feel something, but there are some that will really hit you in the feels. If you're looking for more songs that you will feel as much as you hear, I got a few for you guys: "Bravado", "Red Sector A", and "Manhattan Project" all by Rush are very good for this. They have an ability to sing about some of the most horrific events in such a respectful way. "The Bitter End" by Placebo will probably give Amber anxiety by the end of the song while Jay is rocking out to it, lol. You guys already did "Ghost Love Score" by Nightwish - Kudos Now that you guys are doing the movie channel, I know you can tackle longer songs. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd is a must.(Especially for Amber) All 13 or 25 minutes of it depending which parts you cover. "3 Libras" by A Perfect Circle is another good one for feels. "Over Now" by Alice In Chains will have you feeling sad about the passing of Layne Staley. Although it wasn't written specifically about him alone, the lyrics will strike a chord. "Love Song for a Vampire" by Annie Lennox has this effect too. Although it's the theme song to the movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula" which I would also recommend for your movie channel. "Learning to Live" by Dream Theater which let's be honest, you guys need to do some Dream Theater. There's more, but that's a good sample for now.
Undoubtedly one of the great (of many) Metallica songs. Loved both of your reactions - jamin’ Jay and empathetic Amber! You should listen to the album version. As great as the video is, hearing it without the movie lines gives a more direct experience of both the music and lyrics. Completely unrelated to Metallica, you guys should react to Tori Amos. Her vocal prowess and her skill on the piano are both amazing. I would suggest starting with the live version of “Winter”. Last but not least, love the new look Amber!
The movie footage is taken from "Johnny Got His Gun". It is a heart wrenching subject and the musical composition/vocals do an amazing job of driving it home. Every time i hear this i am torn by the subject matter while simultaneously being entranced by the composition. Metallica at there best!
I don't think anyone was ready for the first time hearing One
Yeah you’re right. As a ten year old kid, this song is one that shaped my whole life. It basically got me into music completely. This song and Epic by Faith No More were the two songs that got me into music. This song had a profound impact on my views on life, on war, critical thought. Literally life shaping.
This is my first time today. I had no idea that i would actually like Metallica.
I was always glued to the TV everytime this video came on.
Heard it the day it came out and loved it.
As a Veteran that song has been hitting hard for 30 years...A suggestion try Ozzy Osborne with Motorhead " Hellraiser" 30th anniversary great song and video...
"Hes a product of your profession, not mine." One of the coldest lines ever delivered in a movie...Chills me every time I hear it.
That's my favorite line. I was just thinking about that, and if anyone else really likes it.
Yes, that and the fact that it's bullshit.
“Death has a dignity all its own”. I didn’t really fully understand it when I was younger. But as I’m much older and have seen much more life and death, I now fully understand it. And it’s incredibly true.

Yes.
My Uncle sacrificed himself in the Korean War by jumping on a grenade and he saved his own troops. The first time I heard this song he was the only thing I could think of.
Sorry for your loss, your uncle was a brave man.
Your uncle is an absolute legend and hero.
Those drum riffs represent machine guns...Metallica captures everything

It’s Morse for “SOS”
Seeing Amber cry and headbang at the same time really shows what timeless musical classics were written for. The great ones touch your soul
Touch everyone's soul

Amber otuched your soul? Sounds like a lawsuit to me! Did you consent, a NDA, anything?

Metallica single-handedly brought Metal to the world with “One” song. Absolute legends…
Keith Dean you hit the nail on the metal head! 💥
The story is intense. The movie is downright scary, and the book will give you nightmares. Metallica did an excellent job putting a classic antiwar story to music.
Another movie that had a trippy scene, and stars Jason Robards is "A Boy And His Dog".
Good Lord. There is a book? Further down the rabbit hole I slide.
@@Databyter Yes, there's a book. Johnny got his gun. It is soooo good, made me cry my face off, this book should be a must for everyone.
Well said!!!!
Fade to Black would hit Amber hard
The best metal video ever made,!
Agree on ALL counts!
Yes you’re right this video got them to superstardom
Correct
I like to say they finally decided to tell the MTV world "Hold my beer" and gave us this masterpiece.
Vero, prima venivano chiamati "la band senza immagine".
Do they eventually put him out of his misery? I hope so.
Johnny got his gun was required reading when I was in high school. I’ve read it more times than I can remember. Dalton Trumbull was charged as a spy after writing this book
@@mst1740 they don't. The nurse tries, but her attempt is thwarted.
He lost his arms, his legs, his face. The movie is based on the book written by Dalton Trumbo in the 1930s. I read it in high school.
The Book was an anti war novel after ww I. Gained popularity during Vietnam. Thus the movie
I hate seeing Amber cry, but I'm always so touched by her empathy. ((Hugs)) 😥❤
Agreed. But the song/video did it's job .
I second the motion.
She sees where the world is headed

Dalton Trumbon. I think that’s it. Wrote the book. Very nightmarish

My Mother doesn't regret her time so much as time lost. If you know, you know.
James wrote this about the Book as it was one of his favorite books.
Hope you're doing well m8!! Appreciate your service

Combined together, sound and lyric, and you get some of the best music ever written.
lol I was 27 when it came out ✌❤☮
Creeping death live Moscow 1991 best live song EVER!!

Lars is playing Morse code on the kick drum in this. S.O.S

I love that both of you can appreciate these old, sophisticated and emotional songs. That's pretty rare nowadays! Thumbs up!
Yeah they're truly adults. Didn't eyeroll "omg this is so angry" and turn it to ASMR or coloring books to heal the trauma that was hearing metal for 15 seconds.
This is one of the all time best metal songs. Truly a classic.
There is no longer any reason for any American soldier to fight on foreign territory. We didn't begin anything with them nor do we intend to.
I sincerely recommend their “Fade to black”. Beautiful and dark. Amazing guitars, amazing lyrics. I think you’ll both like it ❤️.

Y'all should watch the movie, for the other channel.
Surely they've read it right? Aren't they teachers?

This song and Unforgiven, both just grab ahold of my heart and squeeze until I can barely breathe. Both have amazing music, but when combined with the very deep and powerful lyrics, both of them impact me like a kick in the ribs from a horse.
The way the drums and guitars simulate the machine gun fire is part of what makes this song hit so hard.

A serviceman doe does not get to choose his duty. God bless your father and thank him for his service.

I don't think nobody was ready for this song, but it is still one of my favorite by them. This is a very deep song and y'all also need to check out "Janie's got a Gun" by Aerosmith. It also is a very deep song about a subject that nobody at the time wanted to talk about. Another rough one is Jeremy, especially the video.
I always hated the movie dialogue over the song. The song doesn't need some dumb movie ruining the guitar.

This song is what I think of when people say they don't like or understand metal (heavy metal, hard rock, the even more artistically brutal subgenres). There are times when it's the only thing that makes sense, and finding musicality in darkness is insanely intense. And yeah, cathartic.

This one is the song I was introduced to Metallica. I'll always hold a special place in my heart. ALWAYS turned up to 11. ❤😓
That double bass on the drums gets me every single time. Lars, you're amazing!
I have been told he is playing SOS in Morse code
@@scottdash really?! I've never heard that. I'll have to listen for the dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot.
@@scottdash I listened for it bit I don't hear it. Certainly doesn't mean it's not there.
You can never go wrong with old school 80's Metallica
R.I.P. Jeremy Wade Delle 1975-1991.
My favorite song of Metallica
Me too!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
This is my favorite song by Mettalica because it has the strength and power of early Mettallica but there is more to it than most of their early sons. It is more musical. Just a better piece of writing words and music. The opening really does it for me. This is not just a simple thrash metal song. It is much more.
I cried...AGAIN! I've been watching the original video since it first came out, hundreds of times over and it STILL gets to me!
9:47 thats the greatness of METALLICA!
You need to check out Metallica’s song “No Leaf Clover” that they performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. It’s amazing
Second this!!
The motion is Seconded. All in favor, say "Aye!"
AYE!
Third this!
@@TheLastGarou AYE!
Yes! 100%!
I've seen this video a million times but I cry every time. This song is a masterpiece
It needs to be talked about. These men should not be forgotten.🇺🇸
The video adds a layer that you need to understand the true meaning of this song! Thanks to all that have served and sacrificed!
♥U all*
Yes, this was a tough one, the movie, to watch. Even decades later it still haunts me with vivid memories of all the scenes.
Jason was on the bass guitar 🎸
@@johnsmathers190 Right...he is in this vid. When I said "this was when Cliff was on bass..." I was referring to when I saw them in early '83.
Roh Echp. I apologize, I misunderstood your message.
@@johnsmathers190 No worries...Thank you. I saw how it could be mistaken, so I edited it so it is more connected to the previous sentence. ✌
One is a Metal masterpiece. See Metallica. I saw them perform this last night.
If you're looking for more songs that you will feel as much as you hear, I got a few for you guys:
"Bravado", "Red Sector A", and "Manhattan Project" all by Rush are very good for this. They have an ability to sing about some of the most horrific events in such a respectful way.
"The Bitter End" by Placebo will probably give Amber anxiety by the end of the song while Jay is rocking out to it, lol.
You guys already did "Ghost Love Score" by Nightwish - Kudos
Now that you guys are doing the movie channel, I know you can tackle longer songs.
Perfect emotion to a POWERFUL SONG! To all who served “Thank you “
When I first heard one it just left me speechless! Professional musicianship in Metallica!
The movie footage is taken from "Johnny Got His Gun". It is a heart wrenching subject and the musical composition/vocals do an amazing job of driving it home. Every time i hear this i am torn by the subject matter while simultaneously being entranced by the composition. Metallica at there best!
The movie was awesome. The novel even went into more of the psychosis of "Johnny" Metallica put this song together based off both very well.
🤘❤🤘 As of 2021, according to the R.I.A.A., Metallica has sold 131 million albums world wide.
And they murdered Napster
@@TheJoshuaPimentel Who is Napster?
