I removed the thermostat,, drained and flushed out my cooling system with fresh water from my garden hose and performed a regular Blue Devil flush.
Then I flushed with fresh water from garden hose and performed the Concentrated Blue Devil radiator flush.
Then I flushed the cooling system with fresh water from my garden hose.
Then I added a bottle of Blue Devil 8 cylinder simultaneously with a bottle of Blue Devil Pour N Go as directed for both.
I let my car idle for 70 minutes and let it sit for 24 hours.
Previously the car had the typical exhaust going through the coolant reservoir and overheating within a few miles but zero steam out the exhaust.
The car also had a slight sputter every now and then.
I installed a new factory temperature thermostat, checked the fluids and added fresh water from the garden hose.
My car now runs perfectly fine with zero issues.
My car is a beautiful, second owner 1998 Cadillac Eldorado with the 4.6 Northstar.

I’m barely a novice and I know to removed the thermostat if it wants you to “pour/use on a cold engine”. It’s impossible and pointless to pour into a cold engine if the thermostat is still in! It takes a while for it to open up and by then the engine is hot/warm. I ever understood that. None of these brands tell you to remove it and they call on only pour into a cold engine and I think I know why, but like you I believe it works best on a cool engine.

Glad to see it worked. Sometimes you have to veer away from the direction slightly to get the results you are looking for. Example: I was told never to use Barsleak to fix a small head gasket leak on a 4 cylinder Corsica I used to have.... Well I did it anyway and the leak stopped and I drove the car that way for two years. :) Not a bad looking Cougar. I kind of like the top. Look forward to future updates and can't wait to see more on the Mustang and the Corvettes.

Thought it wasnt gonna work at first but it kinda makes sense, the stuff in blue devil only hardens under extreme heat, and will only really harden where hot exhaust gasses are going into coolant so makes sense why after you let the exhaust make its way out that it finally worked! awesome!

Don’t all blown head gaskets cause exhaust to leak into the cooling system? My blown head gasket didn’t leak water into the block but my water site smelled like gas and did overpressurize my cooling system with the volcano like eruptions and leaks.
I tried Bars and BD and they didn’t last.

I bought a Saturn for $100 about 10 years ago. It had a cracked head and would barely run(common for those model Saturns). Blue Devil actually worked on it. You should try the K&W head gasket repair in the green bottle. I use the nanotechnology or the fiberlock. I have sealed leaks that were spraying coolant, brought motors back from the dead, and stopped engines from eating coolant or overheating. I suggest the fiberlock for that one but the nanotechnology should work too.

Missed this when it was uploaded, I'm liking all the '90s stuff coming through lately man. Might have to see if we can get a can of that Blue Devil stuff over in the UK for a car I'm working on. Engine's well and truly cooked but I unsiezed the cam & slapped it together to get it mobile & it actually runs not half bad except for the warped head causing the gasket to blow again. (longer term, it's getting a replacement engine but it'd be interesting to see if that gunk can do some magic)

*Great that you tried this experiment with head gasket sealer man!* Ignore the haters Randy this car was going to the crusher for sure and you saved it from that. If somebody can get a couple of months of use out of it for very little money it would be a good deal for them. Maybe somebody that's falling in love with it is willing to take on the head gasket job if the issue appears again.

glad you ran it without the cap off, but i've heard some mechanics suggest that you run it on an incline with the front end facing up to help bleed the excess air and gas out that might be still trapped in the system. it looks like i is already parked on an incline outside that shop door, so you may have already done that.

It's sodium silicate, sometimes called liquid glass. It has been used since the 60's as far as I know. We would just flush the system and dump it in. Run it for a week. Then drain and add coolant. 50 /50 weather it works.

I had a 67 chevy truck a few years ago and it had a 230 inline 6 cylinder that had a cracked head. I put some old style Bars Leak stop in it that you had to leave the engine idling for about 30 -45 minutes and let the vehicle sit for 24 hours afterwards. The next day the water leak was fixed. It kept running for over 10 years afterwards.

Blown head gaskets on those 3.8s are common. Everyone I've ever owned has had overheating and coolant issues. Trying to combat this in the Super Coupe swap Mustang I am rebuilding. Really wish I went with something else but younger me thought it was a good idea so trying to follow through and finish a project. ARP head studs and a good set of gaskets is one way to solve it. Draining all the coolant before you dissemble is a huge piece to the puzzle. If coolant gets down in the crank case, you will likely get a rod knock shortly after changing the head gaskets. Anti-Freeze damages the bearings. Have had several that people have changed the gaskets on and then blew it up anyways because of this.

I guess there is such a thing as head gasket repair in a bottle. I wonder how long it work for? It probably depends on how big the head gasket leak is? I was trained on that 3.8. Wasn't impressed then. Later owned one. Of course it hemoraged coolant. I never want to own another.

I am having flashbacks to 1998 when my nearly identical maroon on maroon 91 cougar had blown headgaskets and would stall and not start. Happened at an intersection. Smoking like crazy, pushed it through the intersection and then git it started. Eventually the oil light started flickering. It spun a bearing due to the headgasket and needed a new engine. That Jasper reman'd engine blew its headgaskets during the warranty period and it had to be repaired again. Then I traded the car in on a 1993 Supercoupe.
Funny story about the SC was a few years later I saw the telltale smoke from the exhaust and took it back to the same shop that misdiagnosed the headgaskets on the cougar.
I told them to check the headgaskets and they were like "you're just paranoid cause of the cougar " I repeated "check the headgaskets" they again tried to say I was paranoid. I repeated a final time "CHECK THE HEADGASKETS!"
They finally relented. They called me the next day saying they found......
    The headgasket had started leaking.
It still cost me $1800 for a headgasket replacement but at least I didn't need a $3600 engine replacement (actually that was the cougar engine, an SC engine was likely even more money).

What I’ve done in the past is take out the spark plugs in the cylinders with the head gasket leak and let it run for a few minutes with those plugs out. That will keep the pressure out of that area and give the head gasket sealer a better chance of working.

If you take out the spark plugs won't that cause the car to stop running?

    • @Soulauric
      @Soulauric 2 роки тому +1

@@ranakeen9884 It'll just misfire and run rough which it was already probably doing. Just don't take out all the plugs at the same time

Very GLAD for you to get (another) LIFT. I remember the other lift you had and had to leave behind (Dodge DART) got done on that one. RANDY, that was in a rented shop and now in YOUR shop - hell yeah! Happy for you. That vette will be sweet! COUGAR - better to try then not try at all. Plus, you resurrect part of youth. Win - Win!

Man, if you had taken photos of when you were stopped at night, (18:00), that would have looked so cool, I think. Kind of a Christine vibe. But a ford, and 33 years newer, but still cool. Keep up the good work.
