Most people shortening driveshafts are not machinists and good welders, I like that your content is all over the place, it means there is something new every video.
👍👍😎
Thank you bud. A welder is a must but the machinist part isn't necessary. I remember doing them when I was in my teens when I didn't have a clue😄. They worked thankfully
the joys of getting old is the amount of grunting and groaning a guy does when working😓💪🤣
"Still Got a Few Miles Left On Her" - Awesome! Thanks for the video Steve.
Well, well, well, Mr. Johnny Cash got married. Congrats!
That drive shaft will be just fine..strong as factory in my opinion
Always makes me wonder when I see a guy who is doing a fair amount of engine work on cars who is without a balance beam on his engine lift. I bought one from Harbor Freight in the early eighties when they opened up. For a very little cost (back then I got it for under fifty bucks). Makes life so much easier when pulling or dropping an engine in because you can vary the approach as you are doing it in as small of increments as you need. I have used it in many situations and it has made all the difference. In boats with tight spaces it is wonderful. Of course I generally work alone so then it is indispensable for any kind of control and safe lifting without damaging things.
Great video can’t wait to see it run. Camera angle is much better when you put the camera by the door looking into the shop. When you are backlit all the details are is the shadows. Thanks for posting
Kit and kaboodle is one of my favorite old sayings. Kit, as you would guess, refers to all the stuff.
Kaboodle refers to all the people. So I think this was about families moving to another location, Checking that, they had "the whole kit and kaboodle", before setting off.
GM's are not my thing but I can still appreciate seeing some old iron getting renewed for another lifetime of usage. You did gain some electronics going this route, still minimal vs the dozen modules/brain boxes in a new rig today.
Awesome! Look like Johnny is going to breathe again!
Thanks for the update!
Dont even worry about dents in header. There is uTube video of dyno-testing before/after purposfully denting headers. The power-difference was nearly UNmeasurable.
I also like to build like you do. Lots of folks throw money at the problem, and really have no idea why something isn't working. after your harness repair, you'll know what's going on when there's an issue. Great video!
Knowing more about the harness for troubleshooting is one of the main reasons other than cost, which is why I used the original. I didn't push the easy "Buy Now" button. All those wires are a little intimidating, but it was so much easier than I originally imagined.
Good morning Steve and everyone watching from Lincolnshire UK 🇬🇧
another great video Steve thank you !
Great job Steve and Elizabeth!
Interesting....
My 1958 Plymouth Suburban has the parking brake on the rear of the transmission also.
I used to tig a lot of aerospace parts at my job. For stainless and titanium and inconel etc... we had holding fixtures for most and would flood shielding gas via an elaborate spaghetti of tubes and nozzles. Sometimes I would just take an extra tank and hose and flood the joint. Sometimes simple is best. Sure wish you had more subscribers cause you have good stuff to share.
I wondered if Steve's flux trick would work on Titanium as Ti is notoriously sensitive to back gas problems.
Where there's will there's way. Nice. Headers are always a pain. But got it done. You are the man. A mechanic, not a parts replacer. Johnny Cash is moving forward. Hope you took before n after pics of your truck n the same with miss Elizabeth's truck. Till next time, take care.
This episode was jam packed with cool stuff. You managed to pack a lot of tasks into a relatively short video. You probably had hours and days into filming and producing this little masterpiece! It's much appreciated and I enjoyed it very much. Thanks!
Headers never seem to fit perfectly. You did a great job slicing and dicing those to fit... You were fortunate enough to have a set that mostly fit. 😁
LoL, these were the cheapest long tubes I could find so I wasn't really surprised. They were pretty well built as far as materials go . Nice think tubes and flanges. I would rather hack up the headers than the chassis😄. Thanks for watching buddy. I always appreciate seeing you in the comments every week.
You are correct on the time frame. It was a weeks worth of afternoons after work to get all this footage together.
With all the tech we have these days sometimes good old proven high speed is the go to. Nice to have an hour with you today my friend. As an alternative for anti spatter is just good old fashioned Baking soda thinned in distilled water has always served me well. Headers can be a real pain in the toosh. Too bad they really do make a difference. Wrap, flat black paint and a grinder are the best friends we have on builds like this eh. Funny, when I was still working all the various wire and harness work came to me. On more than 3 occasions the shops owner and he would come in and see his brand new low bed truck with the entire front harness in a state of adapting all the needed wiring all over. He just said, I really hope you can put that all back together. When I was done there was no sign I had it all apart. I was always happy doing what others feared to put the wire strippers to work. It's always a nice Saturday when you post for us. Take care eh.
Yes wiring harness work needs care, and if you are careful you can make it look like it came from the assembly line again. A tip for Steve is if he is going to use slitted sleeve, put a layer of tape over the loom where it will run in the sleeve, and where the ends are at least 3 layers of tape, then put the sleeve. Also any exits from the sleeve, cut a relief in the slit, and 5 layers of tape there on the wires. That way they both have strain relief and also will not chafe through. Then outside you wrap over again with tape to keep it closed. 3M tape is the best, but expensive, though it does hold up well. with a knot at the end to keep it from unravelling as the adhesive ages with heat.
@@SeanBZA Exactly. As with many things we get what we pay for. Especially with black electrical tape. Many will pull and stretch tape to end a wrap when it always should be cut and tried not to be ended over an area that has finger prints on it. 3M is by far the best I can get. I do have a couple rolls of the cheap stuff for use in un -important use but the good stuff is reserved for important things. Price is about $2(CDN) a roll of cheap stuff and $8(CDN) for the good stuff. WE GET BACK WHAT WE PUT IN. Ido crimp but only as a set up but solder and double shrink/glue lined tube. Again there is the single type shrink tube I only use that for holding runs of wire bundles together but neve at a fitting or end connections. If I only have single shrink I will put on 2 layers. Like you said with exits out of split loom/bundle guards they need that special attention. I no longer cut the hard plastic guard but instead use my soldering tip to melt that guard where the wires exits the melt leaves a nice and far less sharp exit Over kill ? but I have seen far to many big rigs burnt to the ground from a poor wiring job. After a fire the mess left behind is a far more pain in the heini to have to repair some ones ignorance for sure eh. From your words I see you have seen and done the clean-up from others yourself. Take care eh and keep on doing it right bud. I'll be right along to sub you up my friend.
@@TomokosEnterprize Yes did the rebuild there, though first had to was all the dry powder off, as they used around 100 dry powder extinguishers before the fire brigade got there, though they could do nothing till the battery was disconnected. Kind of had to, as the tractor was attached to an aircraft at the time.
@@SeanBZA Pretty tense situation for sure. Those electrical fires sure stink eh.
Who else was waiting for that tree to fall over ? lol
I've had "professionally" made driveshafts built with almost 3x the runout of your "homemade" driveshaft. THAT'S the way to do it. Good job!
And when Elizabeth is out posing in her ride and she's got it in neutral and blipping the throttle the torque reaction is going to make that header chime against the frame rail.
Steve, Someday show us the view of the top of the hill across the road.
Morning everyone! From Dorset, UK.
Morning'
Good morning buddy, was it you that sent the Dorset flag? 😄
@@SteveSummers👍🙂
@@SteveSummers on your wavelength brother. Many of us here relate to what you do. Quite a few of us have an Elizabeth too. 😘
@PSUK Thank you buddy. I'll hang that flag in the shop for sure👍🙌
Keep that rear axle from the junk salt truck. The disk break setup is great, and if you want to use it on the K10, it's not hard to convert your 10 bolt to 8 lug hubs.
Great to see your surgical skills with Johnie Cash's heart transplant
I sure was comfortable watching this in a nice soft chair and when you said that you had a relaxing vacation it removed some of the guilt.
Impressive work.
I wish I had your energy Steve! I have the skill to do some of the work you do but I lack the “ horsepower “ ! I also envy your shop equipment.🥰
Great video 👍 Like the mix of horticultureized Willow tree etc and butterfly info in the video sure Elizabeth getting excited about her truck😊
Those tires😂! Steve, a few miles? Well, I guess „three“ just qualifies as a few. But only just. Still holding air, but it looks like a very loose grip.
48:00 It's easier to used a phosphoric acid stainless steel cleaner to remove the oxide after welding.
And you don't leave wire brush marks.
You got a lot done!
I never knew it was possible to put an engine in with the transmission attached. Mind you, the most complex automotive work I've done is to replace a head gasket, so the list of things I didn't know was possible is pretty long.
Solar flux is amazing stuff. Worth its weight in gold and something that lots of people outside of the professional communities don't really know about.
"The whole 9 yards" was about a military ammo belt that ran out. Another source was when a well-endowed Scotsman got his kilt caught in a door. "That's the gist of it." Love seeing you guys working together. "Team Summers"
I´am a "German Guy" and enjoy watching ur Channel for about 2-3 Years... by this Way - Thank u for ur good work an these very nice Videos. Very excited to see more of " Johnny Cash - World" and work.
Thank you buddy. 👍🙌
I thought you were being ridiculous drilling holes for a winch saying you'd use that once then again a decade later. Seems like you use it once a month. You're making truck restoration look easy and I'm sure encouraging many of us to look on marketlist to find a project!
When I screw something up. Which is pretty often. I also remind myself I have more time than money. Love the header fix. your a master.
I really don't care what the subject is, I always enjoy and learn something new with each of your videos so, don't worry about 'getting back' to a previous topic. I always enjoy seeing Elizabeth and the animals at least making a cameo in you vids. Now, when you get around to it, consider a horn that will play the intro to one of Johnny's famous songs like 'Folsom Prison Blues'.
very good job Steve and Elizabeth..thanks for your time
Elisabeth has her Boss face on :)
There’s a tools for aligning the rear seal cover for LS engines.
How to pull a tree out of the ground. . . . LOL. Always unintended consequences. Of course, I HAVE NEVER done anything like the. wink
When you first said let’s use Loretta Lynn I swear I heard ‘let’s use rattle-inn’. Which in itself is a good name for an old truck.😂
Just a suggestion, when bleeding the brakes, always start with the longest line first. Right rear, left rear, right front, left front. That is unless you're just getting enough brakes to get it into the shop and plan on doing them again later.
That flux looks very similar to broenwells atp 461 heat treating anti-scale compound
Thank you for sharing.👍
Awesome video
Hi Steve. Lots of progress on Johnny Cash and lots of good tips! I especially like the one about replacing the whole rear cover instead of just the seal. As you know, GM didn't think it was important to use dowel pins to locate either the front or rear covers on the LS'es and getting the seal centered can be troublesome. Thanks for the video!
Great video - LOVED the shot of the Luna Moth!!! So cool
Quite a dignified toad.
My custom driveshaft came from the driveshaft shop. It cost me $900 but now that it is in and I’ve been driving the car, I couldn’t be happier. The first attempt was enough to motivate me to pay the man. I put a 2013 LS3 out of a Camaro 2SS and the manual 6 spd trans (from the same 2013 Camaro) into my 1970 Camaro. It wasn’t too difficult, I did have to make a few parts and modify some. But it sits in there nice, like it came from the factory like that.
It’s a little bit of a job. But you could definitely do it in a day. But I would recommend you take your time and make it safe, yet easy to service.
Good thing Cora was there to help get the motor and transmission in, otherwise it would've gone a lot less smoothly. That's probably why you had so much trouble with the headers, I bet if she was there to help with those, they would've slipped right in too.
She is great moral support 😁. She is also there to give way more kisses than anyone needs.
Absolute gold content mate. Wonderful engineering, resourcefulness and cracking humour. I'm making food here and laughing out loud... Triple s, tyres, clutching at pearls 😆😆😆😆
Man i love this build more than loretta. Lots of fittin, boogerin, and plain makin due with watcha got. I hope to see several more vids on this. Ty
Another restoration!? I think it would be a great resto
Great video, good content and varied. Thanks to you both for taking the time to produce this video
If I were 10 years younger and you were a lot closer I would have loved to visit and custom build you a set of headers. Great job on the engine installation. Keep showing more on this build.
That would be cool to see😁👍
Do you know frogs and toads are very smart if you ask them about any book they will tell you they've readit lol
We use diatomaceous earth stirred in a sprayer. Keeps the critters from being a bother. Work's great if you have pets. Spray anywhere including tree line. Will not harm you or pets. Its also food grade. At the farm store
George from Indiana
so the effort = money saved! what would you be doing if you weren't doing the rebuild. good channel well balanced with work-V- talk. keep it up
If I wasn't working on projects I'd probably be in jail or the mental hospital.
Wow, thanks for sharing.
nice work , got some machineing too
We call them joints hardy spicers
Nice job guys. You’ll have it out driving around before you know it.
i hate when i get the motor mounts mixed up, wait that has never happened.... cos i never did it🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, keep up the good work
Happy Saturday Steve, Elizabeth, Cora, and Grits!. Good general content Steve. I always enjoy just some down and dirty wrenching. Good luck with Jonny, God Bless.
Beside every good man is a good woman.
Nicely done guys
Everything, every part, as in He packed up all his gear, the whole kit and caboodle, and walked out. This expression is a redundancy, for kit has meant “a collection or group” since the mid-1700s (though this meaning survives only in the full idiom today), and caboodle has been used with the same meaning since the 1840s. In fact caboodle is thought to be a corruption of the phrase kit and boodle, another redundant phrase, since boodle also meant “a collection.”
A while back I ordered a kit but it didn't come with the kaboodle. It was on backorder, took another 6 weeks to come in.
Morning from Germany.
Hi Steve and Elizabeth ☺ good progress guys, nice job on the drive shaft and headers, speaking of which the passenger side header looked mighty close to the frame from the video , depending on your engine mounts will the torque on the engine bang the header against the frame ?. If I'm talking out of my hat just ignore this comment, lol. Good to see you both , best wishe's to all, Stuart Uk.
Per internet find:
Kit = Collection
Caboodle (aka "Boodle") = Bunch or Bundle
The more you know🌈
LOL, I'm wondering why header manufactures even tell you what vehicles they fit as you end up cutting and rewelding them anyway. Good job of cut and weld. Elizabeth chose excellent names for the trucks, as I like the music from both and when Elizabeth's truck is done both trucks will make some nice music as well.
Amigos!! Soy Andres de Uruguay.
Me gustaria que activaran los titulos de su canal a Español.
Aca tienen una gran audiencia..
Gracias...y esta muy bueno todo lo que haces..Saludos.!!
You don't shave, so only 2 Ss. Enjoyed the vid as always!
Thank for the flux tip as a non professional welder purging on the outer is just unreal
Gonna need to cut a bit more off that right side frame rail- if you pull a heavy load that motor will rock over on the mounts. Funny you did all that flux work to prevent oxidation on the pipe no one can see, but your headers are all oxidized up top.
Probably will have to remove a bit more frame on the passenger side 😄. Those headers are stainless so they should last a while before they start getting corroded.
Since it's not quite a mish-mashed Cadillac... maybe Elizabeth can call it Johnny Cash's A Boy Named Sue?😂😂
good
i love all of you and elizabeths content it is invaluable and unfortunantly i have a state job with the forestry that is low pay really low and im sorry i cant give to your patreon but thank you for all you do and thanks for seeming to be a really down to earth family
Don't you worry at all buddy, I completely understand and am just thankful you watch the videos.
@@SteveSummers yes yall are my favorite above all the rest i have a cobbled together bridgeport and 13x40 lathe that get me by 99% of the time but a mill with less wear would be nice maybe one day , we"ll see lol again thanks for videos that last long enough to enjoy watching
This is inspiring me to put a new model engine in my c10
There is a ton of useful info on the web 🕸. C10 swaps are as easy as they get. With the proper mounts it bolts right up like it was made for it.
17:00 Luna Moth.
Great video
1 hour
☹🇬🇧
Thise things you welded onto the headers are called V band clamps. well technically the clamp is called a v band the parts you weld on i dunno what they are called flanges probably
found "55 seconds published, 2nd to comment" ... a record for me .....
yeah, I know. big deal.
👍👏
16:56 ... thats a beautiful moon moth .. do you get many of those around your place Steve??
👍
Hey steve my name is Doug dont know if you got my info I sent to you about Jonny cash. I watch a you tuber called ugly truck experience UTX and they have excellent info on exactly what your doing and you should find very detailed instructions about entire motor and wiring stuff. Just thought it might be helpful. Keep up the great videos. Thanks let me know if this was helpful.
Save the 14 bolt from the salt shaker donor. Probably a 4.10.. [fellow pack rat here] If i were closer, I'd come get it.
Curious why you are using the D-shaft brake drum from the RV? I was surprised it cleared the floorboards actually..😮
Looking good as always and I enjoy the truck projects. I grew up with those square bodies.
It clears the floor by about .1" a thin piece of cardboard will slide between it and the floor. I used it because I have it and I think it's a neat but kind of useless in this application.
I’ve done my 3 ‘S’… lovely!
By the way… do all Americans have ‘snatch blocks’??
the kit is the break-in tools / Kaboodle is the booty.
Seems like you could have one of these carbon fiber driveshaft companies sponsor you for the truck. They keep showing up on others channels.
Nice work on the transplant Steve.
Joe
I'm not a big fan of sponsored content . I like the idea of showing everyone that you can do it yourself without spending a fortune. It would be nice to have an awesome carbon driveshaft tho😄.
@@SteveSummers
Just busting your chops Steve. It is funny when they get items donated that cost BIG money just out of the blue.
Joe
Steve you might already know this but some RVs use the emergency brake as the parking brake. My 1999 Coachman RV with a P30 chassis is like that. They did not put the parking brake dog inside the transmission. The drum brake on the end of the transmission is spring loaded on and there is a mechanism to pull it off. It is a terrible system.
This trans has park. I think this was just for extra holding power.
@ 29:02 I bet U wished U made a pit B4 U concreted that part of the floor...
I'd certainly put 1 in the side U have 2 do...
Sorry, guys, but I would've named Steve's truck "June Carter!"
You should start wearing chaps or patch those jeans. Nothin worse than stray weld spatter or nealing on somethin.
Get yourself a set of stage 8 locking header bolts.
Those are pretty pricey if I remember correctly. But nice👍
@@SteveSummers they are but they work.
