Just want to say thank you. You are the most honest dog trainer I've even seen so far. Very knowledgeable and experienced, I'd like to hear you talking and talking all the things about dogs. I've finished 80% of your videos in the past 2 weeks, love them! Please continue post more videos, just one suggestion, if you can make the videos more organized and easier for us to find will be even better!
It takes a confident (and honest) dog trainer to show a dog in progress. I'm one of Garret's moderators at DIYK9.com where he has in-depth training courses and Garret will tell you in a heartbeat that dog training is a continuous process for the life of the dog. No trained dog is ever without room for improvement. So many of Garret's videos are shot in a single take, warts and scars obvious, and no editing to remove flaws. I'd trust that any day over a trainer with a perfect dog, and tons of editing to only show the dog at this perfect state, while editing out imperfections. In his courses at DIYK9.com he shows the dog training in action, showing dogs in his program in the process of training. You'll see him training one thing, and while making progress on one thing, he'll end up breaking another item in the process, then correcting and moving forward. He welcomes the challenges and explains them and uses them for training people to train their dogs. I enjoy his pure honesty in training. Garret's fluid in his training sessions. Several videos will start with Garret saying, "When we started this recording, we were planning on recording ABC training, but when I started, the dog showed me it needed training on XYZ, and off we go with plan B, and ABC will be in another video."
@@AmericanStandardK9 that is very much true. Screw em. Haha I have been good. I hope you and your family are good as well. Lately i have been thinking about off leash training but i dont know where to start. Sensi is doing good. I dont think she is ready for off leash training though. Watching this video made me think about a e collar.
Too many Karen's out there. Did you see Garret's video about Karens where he was walking with his daughter and Thanos talking about leash laws, and how it's more illegal to go 1 MPH over the speed limit than to walk a dog off leash, at least where he was at the time in Florida? Oh man, I laughed so hard my wife and daughter just had to know what I was laughing at. Me? Personally, I prefer someone to be brutally honest with me.
I rescued a pregnant Staffy, she had 10 pups and several needed very strong leadership from about 4 weeks old on! They are a very stubborn breed with a lot of willfulness. Thankfully all are great dogs now.
2:52 - 3:20 EXACTLY. I had a male CC no one knew what to do with (fearful/aggressive with people and other animals). High energy and needed tons of exercise daily. The ecollar brought quality and fun back into his life, the ability to just be a dog within the safe and clear boundaries and backup in case his independent self decided to do something else than listen to me. Ecollars can be used with lower stim than flat collar + leash and be way more useful and humane. I could take him out for a run where no one was around with the reassurance of 100% control from far away. Ecollars don't train a dog, but as a complement to GOOD and humane training, they are prob the best tool out there in my opinion.
Well said. Garrets said that time and time again, including in his paid courses at DIYK9.com. The e-collar should ONLY be used to overlay and reinforce commands the dog is already rock solid with. Some people say using an e-collar is cruel, but personally, I believe not having a dog e-collar trained (in most cases) is more humane. if a dog is not e-collar trained, their entire life is lived indoors, inside fenced in areas, or on a 6 ft. leash where the dog cannot just roam and be a dog, sniff what it wants to sniff, run full speed in new areas, just enjoy the fun of being a dog. It's either that or a life in a fenced in world or on a short leash. That's a small life for a dog, and to me, that's what's truly cruel.
I wish you were in Texas. I am watching all of your lessons and working on it. I have my first dog (Pitsky) ever at 40+ years old after only having cats. It is a totally new experience. After my cat severely attacked me I decided I am now a dog person (although I still have 2 sweet cats). I am devoted to get my dog in check and I appreciate your videos. Now I gotta go buy some hot dogs.
Did you know Garret now has online training courses? They can be found at DIYK9.com. It covers puppies all the way through off-leash training. I'm a dog person too. I've only liked a couple cats in my life, which may be in part to some cat allergies. Dang, my eye just started itching as I said that. Where the brain goes, the body follows LOL.
Since this video came out, Garret's put together classroom quality online training at DIYK9.com. It covers (in-depth) training from puppies all the way through off leash training.
I just want to take a minute of your time and tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I believe that you love every dog that you touch and that is so heartwarming. I had my dog I would call you and ask you for your help in training my dog there are so many people out there that claim to be dog trainers but some of them are way out in space and really hard to comprehend when how where you do all this stuff when you make everything make sense. I thank you and have a great day
I think a lot of the problem people, including myself in the past, have with e-collars, is that a knock-off brand one is not consistent and we just think it's literally a dog taser. We don't like the idea of tasing the dog. However, using them as they should be used, it's not a taser.
Exactly right. When done correctly, 98% of the stims are on such low levels the dog can barely feel it. Check out DIYK9.com for his courses if you need help with training your dog.
My Amstaf/pitbull mix is so easy going.. Apparently, I was very lucky that she walked into my life. From the street into my garden out of nowhere. Nobody claimed her, so I kept her. Dog number 14 in my life and the sweetest one of all of them. Anyway, You helped me out with the on leash training. Thank you so much for that. (I did it with a regular collar) Greetings from Europe. ✌️😉 Some people should not buy dogs, I bump into them everyday.
Love the videos, appreciate all the advice and tips. Our first pup is now 12 and we just got an am staffy x am bull dog cross. She's doing great but it's awesome having access to vids like this for a refresher and to learn some new training tactics as well. Thanks man!
Great work as ever, Garret (quite obviously), thanks for sharing. Interesting that you said e-collar training helps with training in general. Certainly true for my Estrela Mountain Dog: Many people say you shouldn't even try to train a livestock guardian breed - "just let'em do their thing". A neighbor here has done exactly that, now one of his dogs is dead (run over by a car), and the other is chained up all the time. Because he can't control it rudely bluff-charging innocent passers-by, and scaring the living daylights out of little old ladies and their toy-dogs. No chance to make an adult, intact, Portuguese Mastiff, or an Estrela stop mid-charge when something's set them off... Both this neighbor and myself have similar living situations: Our houses are sat on a large plot of land with no fencing. In our case, because it's a rental, we're about to move out of, and in his God knows why he won't fence it. But thanks to e-collar work, my livestock guardian dog gets to run, play, and do those zoomies you mentioned, both on and off land - but one command (and in the worst case 1 - 3 pips on the e-collar, if it's a high distraction), and she's back. Most neat thing about it: She now checks back quite often, even amidst crazy runs/zoomies with the other dog, because she's learned that great things happen when she does that. I dare anyone out there to get a livestock guardian breed dog to that level off leash without ever using an an e-collar - if you can, and have 100% recall-rate under high distractions, then, hats off to you big time - you've got a gift.... Oups, SORRY for the lenghty comment yet again!
Thank you for watching and the comments which are educational for everyone. Not knowing your situation exactly but try to up the level a touch if you have to hit 1-3 times on ecollar or instead of touch release try a short hold until they stop and release as soon as they turn to come back. You don't want to build up an immunity to ecollar. If you go up in level and get a couple of good reps in (legitimate recalls while in full stride) with one tap or tap hold you probably won't have to use it again. FIDO is running after something, you say "Fido Here", you wait half to one second for compliance, if no compliance heavy hit (tap or hold) until compliance. Heavy hit could be anywhere from 35-65 depending upon your dog. This will add power to your voice. I think you are doing it very well based on what you're saying but I don't want the dog to get reliant on one to several taps of e-collar before compliance, I want the dog to understand that when you recall it means right now or the finger of God will strike them swiftly and severely so that you eventually will have a recall with no E-collar. God forbid you forget to turn it on, it comes loose, you don't have it on, etc etc I want your recall voice to mean "ecollar". Hard to type this out but hopefully it makes sense.
@@AmericanStandardK9 Thanks so much for taking the time to write this, awesome advice which I will implement; I love the "Finger of God" analogy! And what you say absolutely makes sense; yep, best never to fully rely on technology, as it can fail. I did implement your advice from before (to do 2 - 3 times exposure to a high level to teach the dog how to react appropriately, prepping them for emergency situations) with my 5 year old German Shepherd . TOTALLY different reaction, it's like some basic programming is so different in these sheep herding- vs. the livestock guardian-breeds: She felt it, seemed confused for a second maybe, then immediately came to me, even thought the command had been "Down", but hey, I happily take that as emergency reaction. (My Estrela Mountain Dog , on the other hand, had been snapping, snarling, barking, and jumping in circles as first reaction to the very same level on the e-collar, before finally coming to me and calming down). These two dogs of mine are polar opposites in terms of trainability, it's quite fascinating. But the biggest reward is that, now, I can walk the Estrela on our land off leash - and she doesn't get all riled-up because some neighbor dares to work on their land nearby: She still goes to the border of our land and looks what's going on, but when I call, she quickly comes to me. Before e-collar-training, she wouldn't even check in with me - she'd be gone, darting towards even far-away"threats", barking and posturing. Classical, natural behaviour for a livestock guardian breed dog, but in my book, even the finest natural guard dog needs to have reliable recall.
Fair to say it, you are smart with dogs. That dog is awesome, well-done. I'm watching what you have to share, as it is worth a lot of coin in any other setting.
Thanks for your videos. They are great. Have learned a lot. I have a 1 yr old amstaff who is leash reactive to dogs and seems to have a lot of prey drive. Wish you were in California to help me train him. He’s better with cars now. And starting to be more confident. COVID got me behind in training and socializing but a lot of info on your videos has helped a lot. Do you have any videos on how to manage prey drive?
You wish Garret was in California to train. Well, he still doesn't live there, but if you were not aware, he does now have online dog training courses. You can train your dog all the way up to being fully off-leash if you wish. If you run into any hiccups along the way, Garret has weekly and monthly live training and Q&A sessions to help. I think they are up to 66 weekly recorded live sessions, which to me is a gold mine of information if you take the time to watch. These courses are at DIYK9.com.
Clear and concise training. Good Job I prefer training high energy dogs, however you have to have a good plan and stick with it with them. I too have seen many owners not understand how important timing is in obedience.. early in training a reward , I find, works wonders when a run away finally comes to you.
Garret has online dog training at DIYK9.com and this includes leash pressure/prong and e-collar training. This is a question that has been asked and answered in the weekly live training/Q&A sessions and it's recorded. These recordings are available to members and is included. Everything from puppy training to having your dog fully off-leash trained.
Check out DIYK9.com. This trainer has paid content that will take you all the way through training your dog to be full off leash. Garrets taught me so much. Dog training is fairly easy once you have someone to show you the right way, what works and does not, and explain why. I've never had a dog that walked with manners on a loose leash. They always pulled so hard I had to lean back to balance the pull, and I'm 6'3" and 230 pounds. Once I went through Garrets "The Perfect Walk" course, then spent 10-15 minutes in the yard with my dog, I've had a dog that walks perfectly on a leash ever since. We trained more int he back yard, then moved to the street where there were higher level distractions and I had to give one more U-Turn correction, and several sudden stop pops, and about 14 months later, she's still walking perfectly. I can take her through Lowe's and Home Depot, about anywhere and she's well behaved and just enjoying the walks and scenery.
You , Robert Cabral and Larry Krohn are the best dog experts on YT . Amstaff's are a bit harder to train than a Mal or GS but if you take your time , they are amazing dogs - better familly dogs than the sheppards in my opinion .
My 1 yr old amstaff will sit and lay down recall needs alot of work I would love to train her to heel and be next to me when I call her but I've tried and she will heel I give her a treat then she will wonder off . Think I need to get her trained properly as it's me not her . Love watching your videos.
Garret's either an Angel with a halo, or the person editing the video in Premiere Pro slightly over adjusted the exposure of the subjects. :0) Garret's a good guy, but I doubt he's reached Angel status, so my money's on the latter. Great video series.
Could you do a video comparing the dogtra with the educators. Specifically comparing the difference between feel of the Stims and difference in reaction within dogs(if any) haven't seen anyone do that type of a video. You seem to be one of the very few people who has experience with both

@@barrys675Thank you for your service in such a hard time. My father was also a Vietnam vet. If your dog is well trained and knows her commands well, taking that next step to the off-leash level would not be as bad as someone may think. The e-collar is used to overlay on top of commands the dog already knows and knows very well. The e-collar adds reliability on commands and gives you that reliability at a distance. Reach out to info@diyk9.com and ask or go to DIYK9.com to look at the available courses. What you see here is free content. If your dog doesn't need additional training, the e-collar course "Unleashed" is over 30 hours long. The other courses are just as thorough if you need those as well. If you purchase the course, it includes a 20% discount code on the purchase of an e-collar through E-Collar Technologies which is the collar Garret uses in his videos.
The ONLY prong collar worth buying is the Herm Sprenger brand. I've used one for the past 15 months or so and I've never had a single issue with the quick release. Every prong collar will fail at some point. It's not a matter of if so much a matter of when. This is why it's always best to double hook a second collar (such as a biothane martingale style collar in the Amazon affiliate links under 'dog training equipment') in case the prong comes loose. I'm OCD because I know this can happen, so I always hold my collar by one end to make sure the collar isn't twisted when I put it on my dog, and that the links are in place. Every time, no exceptions. Even though I checked, about 4 months ago I was putting the collar on my dog and as soon as I put it on, the collar fell off. I assumed I just didn't click the quick connect/release all the way into place, but nope, it was connected correctly, and one of the prongs had slipped out of place and allowed the collar to fall off. Check out more at the DIYK9.com site for more in-depth info and courses from Garret, the trainer in this video.
Can you shoot a video of the transition of the newly trained dog back to the dog owner. (how you teach the owner to control their dog). Every owner isn't as firm as you are with commands. How do you get the owner to achieve the same results or at the bare minimum, similar results utilizing the same commands
Garret has a full set of training videos at DIYK9.com. In the Unleashed course for e-collars he goes into great detail and records a session where he returns an off leash trained dog to a family. He then trains them to use the tools to keep the high level of obedience that he has just spent weeks training the dog. By "he trains them", I mean he sends a human out of the room and has 4 people in the room give him two numbers and two colors. Then the human comes back into the room and using only coins (to represent a food reward), the e-collar, verbal's such as Yes, uh uh, no, and good, he trains the human to do certain tasks and trains them to do these tasks based on the color names and numbers provided while the human dog was out the room. I learned as much from him training a human as I did in many of his dog training videos. I recall seeing a similar video with a lady with a German Shepherd who was a realtor. Here's one video...looking for the second. ua-cam.com/video/84xSDLiP-ZY/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared. Sorry, I can't find the second. It's the same lady wearing the same skirt so it should be recognizable when you see the video. Well, I looked more and I just don't see it, but this does show Garret training the couple how to keep their GSD at the peak performance. The dog is back in its old stomping grounds so it will be natural for the dog to try and regress a little, but if they keep up with what Garret shared with them, the GSD will be a star.
If not, you can check out Garret's training courses where you can learn to train your own dog(s) through his online paid training program at DIYK9.com.

Pretty sure shock is usually used Incase the dog will not listen no matter, but in this case he's most likely just using vibration since the nerves on a dog's neck are sensitive enough to feel a low set vibration (Most but not all).

@@thelaw6835 In this case Garret was using the collar on a 6 out of 100. That's a pretty low level. Out of all the dogs Garret's trained, the lowest any dog has felt a stim is a 3. Hi, just found your videos. Great content. You may have a video about the timing needed when using ecollar. I haven’t found it, but this is what I need professional guidance on. Can you add this?
I think they're highly trainable, very intelligent, very strong but sensitive to owner. Once the prey drive kicks in though they could be a little more difficult to manage if you don't have a good training but if you can harness their drive and channel it into their training then you can train them to a very high level. Great dogs

I have a question. I currently own a yr old male husky and I’m looking to add a companion but I prefer a guard type of dog for my next dog. I am looking at the am staff but I’m worried about the breed because of all the bad rep. I know a lot has to do with the trainer but I’ve heard of stories of the breed losing it even if it’s been trained. I have little kids aswell. If the amstaff is not a good choice what guard breed would you recommend

Bentley looks like champ! It sounds like one can sustain the eCollar 'stim' at a low level. Is there any danger of the button getting stuck or the device 'feeezing' at a high level?
I do not know of any affiliate trainers in that area, but Garret does have a full line of online training courses to train you to train your own dog, all the way up to fully off leash at DIYK9.com.
Reach out to info@diyk9.com and they can provide the information. It will vary based on what you require, if you want basic obedience, or up to off leash trained.
Recently discovered your channel and greatly appreciate the information. I wish you would have taught us how to stop the creep.it might be in your other videos which i am trying to catch up on.
@@AmericanStandardK9 ,thank you for the reply. I understand , after your explanation, everything but the reward behind them? Walk up after the “yes” mark, and give them the reward behind them?
Yes. So, after they complete the command you can throw a toy or food behind them. Dogs are naturally lazy and they are cheaters. So they will think why creep forward for a reward when the last 10 times it was thrown behind them. "Placement of the reward" used as a micro adjustment to tweak positioning. Not guaranteed to work but it's definitely a tool to try. Let me know if it works. Also if your dog has a decent stay you can leave the toy or food behind them already staged. They have to know it's there before the start of exercise. After a rep or a few reps of sit and down or whatever you're working you can release them with a yes. And they will shoot behind them for payment.

@@ActosRyarks9232 How so? Please explain what you know about e-collar training to back up that statement. I've been through Garret's 30+ hour Unleashed (e-collar) course and if you actually KNOW what you're doing, it's not abusive at all. Let's have an educated discussion. OK, start.
Yes. I did see this. The editor likely saw the area around Garret was overly dark in the original video and selected Garret as the subject in Adobe Premiere Pro, and they didn't feather the area around Garret to fade from that higher exposure to blend in naturally with the surrounding pixels. I originally thought it was a halo from Garret being a Saint, but I know better. 😛 I'm assuming the goal was to make Garret not fade into the background. There are times I've seen Garret wearing dark pants, a black shirt, and he's against a dark background with a black dog. Someone has to do some editing or you're just looking at a dark blob. :0)
E-collar doesn't work on my Presa male when he targeted something being off leash - his brain gets to state of no reaction on anything else but there target really quickly! What to do on that case?.. I believe, I'm not reading his body language clearly otherwise I'd catch him before his attention taken away, right?..
If you can catch the dog before it is fully revved up mentally, it's easier to redirect and correct the behavior. Check out the courses at DIYK9.com. There is an e-collar course there called Unleashed that covers e-collars. This one course is over 30 hours long and very detailed. You shouldn't overlay e-collar training until your dog knows the commands you're trying to reinforce. You'd get access to Garret on weekly and monthly live meetings to ask any questions for his direct assistance.
How can I get in touch with someone with your program and where are you guys located because I have a 2 year old American pitbull that he is getting too much for everyone in the house

So impressive I wish my dog listen to me like that ! Her name is Oreo and she is a steffy terrier and she love chasing Squirrels in the park but when I call her name she doesn't listen to me # catchmeifyoucan ❤️❤️❤️
Love that name, Oreo. That would fit for my dog, but since she's a Husky/Treeing Walker Coonhound mix, Echo sounded like a fitting name since both are very vocal breeds. To my amazement, she almost never makes a sound, with the exception being when our other dog has a toy she wants. Then she'll lay down and just sass her. It's fun to watch. She doesn't do it enough to be obnoxious, so Echo really doesn't fit the way we thought it would.
Pretty small pieces. You can also put them in the treat bag/pouch as kibble if you're using kibble pieces while training, and the scent and taste will help the dog be motivated for the kibble as well.

So impressive how you trained him.
Wow!!! Amazing training. My Amstaff is 15-week-old now. I hope she can learn everything this video showed.
My Amstaf/pitbull mix is so easy going..
Apparently,
I was very lucky that she walked into my life.
From the street into my garden out of nowhere.
Nobody claimed her, so I kept her.
Dog number 14 in my life and the sweetest one of all of them.
Anyway,
You helped me out with the on leash training.
Thank you so much for that.

When you first start e collar you press the button than give command here and than praise , great video ty
I LOVE watching how you train these dogs!! I've been using your methods and they WORK!! Thank you so much!
Was this the original (or second) meeting of two of my favorite people?
You are amazing I do off leash training myself , the command I use is freedom when I will allow my dogs to run a little ahead and sniff.
Thank you.
Thanks man. This is whats up. I want my american bully trained just like this.
Bentley is incredible
Good ass training yes im seeing old videos 🔥🔥
Staffy “pocket rocket” I like that lol
Fair to say it, you are smart with dogs. That dog is awesome, well-done. I'm watching what you have to share, as it is worth a lot of coin in any other setting.
I appreciate it
What kind of treats do u use?
I too have seen many owners not understand how important timing is in obedience.. early in training a reward , I find, works wonders when a run away finally comes to you.
what a beautiful dog
Please do a video on how to use an e-collar and/or prong to stop dog agression
Garret has online dog training at DIYK9.com and this includes leash pressure/prong and e-collar training. This is a question that has been asked and answered in the weekly live training/Q&A sessions and it's recorded. These recordings are available to members and is included. Everything from puppy training to having your dog fully off-leash trained.
Its crazy Sir What you Can make a dog become!!!

Best trainer I've found on youtube
@@Troy-Echogarrett was very abusive to me and my dog :(
You , Robert Cabral and Larry Krohn are the best dog experts on YT .
Advice on how to get them closer to me for heeling?
Great job
Garret's either an Angel with a halo, or the person editing the video in Premiere Pro slightly over adjusted the exposure of the subjects. :0) Garret's a good guy, but I doubt he's reached Angel status, so my money's on the latter. Great video series.
Is the e collar on shock or vibrate?
Thank you for making these. I have an American bulldog puppy that I want to start right with.
Thanks for watching
Could you do a video comparing the dogtra with the educators. Specifically comparing the difference between feel of the Stims and difference in reaction within dogs(if any) haven't seen anyone do that type of a video. You seem to be one of the very few people who has experience with both
Yea it's a good question. I think I'll do that. Great idea. Only the connoisseurs will appreciate though.
Hi my name is Barry my service dog is Casey she is a beagle i got her at 8 weeks old now she is 2 yrs old . She was trined for p t s d . How long will it take to train her off leash walking? Can you help me .I am a disabled Vietnam veteran. Thank you so much Barry…..
Any negatives to using the quick release on the prong collar?
What is the easiest way to refresh an older dog (4y) and train a 5m old dog at the same time. I rescued a pup from a backyard breeder
Is there trainers like you in Australia / Victoria? I wish. So good.

How young of a Pup do you recommend using an E collar?
Never!!! It’s abuse. Learn to train using rewards and positive affirmations instead of electric shocks. This dude don’t know shit 🤬
Been watching you a lot .. what kind of ecoller do you recommend.. have two dogs .. & the pup is better behaved than the adult .... needing for both .. would at least like the pup off leash and is kinda at this point .. theres still too much size difference between dogs so not really pals yet but need two collars as dogs go separately.. one is only home other is out ... have a shepherd mix as humane society says .. but def looks more lab with web feet

Love from India. There are no e collars in India. Can you suggest me the good one e collar which I can buy online... Please. please please
Do you use the vibration button or the shock button for this training?
Pretty sure shock is usually used Incase the dog will not listen no matter, but in this case he's most likely just using vibration since the nerves on a dog's neck are sensitive enough to feel a low set vibration (Most but not all).

Where do you rate Amstaffs in regard to trainability in general? Are they smart? Does their prey drive make it difficult?
I think they're highly trainable, very intelligent, very strong but sensitive to owner. Once the prey drive kicks in though they could be a little more difficult to manage if you don't have a good training but if you can harness their drive and channel it into their training then you can train them to a very high level. Great dogs

Recently discovered your channel and greatly appreciate the information. I wish you would have taught us how to stop the creep.it might be in your other videos which i am trying to catch up on.
Numerous options: Back tie, place board, spotter holding leash, reward behind them, and use smaller place board are some of the options

Does anybody else see the obviously edited aura around him when he playing with bently?
Both of the collars you are using is illegal in Sweden, you can absolutely get good result without those, might take a little longer though.
What size are your hot dog pieces? Please
Pretty small pieces. You can also put them in the treat bag/pouch as kibble if you're using kibble pieces while training, and the scent and taste will help the dog be motivated for the kibble as well.
