This can be done in as little as 5 minutes. But take your time and do it right. This works with any age, any breed, anywhere. The decision on whether to use this on a prong collar or a flat collar or a slip lead is a personal one. It depends on numerous factors including breed, size, age, temperament, size, and strength of the handler, and how bad the pulling and reactivity issues are. However, 95% of the time I will use a prong collar on almost every dog and puppy when I start this technique. Sometimes, I will introduce this technique on a flat collar or slip lead (very young and/or very soft dog or puppy) but will very quickly switch to a prong collar once they understand the process. In the end, 99.9% of every dog we train will end up being trained in this technique on a prong collar.
It is the most fair and efficient tool in my opinion. I will NEVER teach this using a harness.
Please post in the comments below when you try this with your dog and the results you get. Please include the age, breed and describe the before and after results of this technique on your dog. I promise it works. Now get out there and get after it!

Dude your the best trainer out and I love your videos and have learned alot from you. I understand charging up the ass for you to take someone's dog and train it yourself personally. I totally get that. You want the best you pay for the best. But your e course where it's just your videos that are already recorded seem a little high. For a dad with 3 kids and a dog it's outrageous to pay 700 bucks for a e course. You say most other trainers are ass but you don't have a way to help normal people with there dogs. I wish you could

I cannot love this video enough. I love my dog. Tucker is smarter than smart. He just turned 1. He took me down this week when he took off after "something" in the dark. I'm 60, single, self employed, I don't have time to be injured. I was worried that 70 pounds of determination would hurt me. I've trained with him. He knows come, sit, down, stay, wait...and he does them, but the distractions have been the problem, and that night was dangerous. I just went and spent about 15 min (worth of treats lol) tightening him up with these techniques. By the time we were done, 80 of his attention was on me, he was turning when I did, staying in the "love" zone. I was preparing to donate him to someone younger and stronger, and it was tearing me up to think about it. We have renewed confidence! Thank you again!

At 7 months old, I forgot to brace when I told her "let's go" as we were about to cross the road. She lunged forward, I lost my step and fell face down in the middle of the road and oncoming traffic. I was extremely lucky not to have been run over. Since then I have been dreading our walks.

This video right here turned my walks with my 1 year old 80lbs rottweiler girl into absolute HEAVEN. She started pulling after she turned 6 months like crazy: every tree, dog, food was in her interest and I was dragged around according to her desires. I tried a lot of things and I was never against prong collar, I was just really scared to use it wrong and to do some damage, but the only mistake I made is that I waited too long to get to this tool. How many terrible interactions, frustration from both us could have been avoided. Incredible transformation within one walk. I did everything as stated in this video, and it works magic. Now it's like a vacation to walk my baby. Thank you thousand times ❤❤❤

We recently got a German Shepard puppy, during this period my husband had a stroke which left him very weak, I myself have allot of back and neck trauma from training horses (retired now). I watched so many videos and was in absolute tears because I couldn't get him to walk with me, he walked me. Then your video popped up, so six a clock this morning I drove him to a safe place and we started. 10 min flat! Drove him home and we went for a walk in the streets, NO problems! He checked in constantly and was such a good boy! My husband will be walking with us this afternoon again, and I believe in a little bit of time he would be able to walk him himself alone. Thank you greatly, you have given us the freedom to enjoy our puppy on beautiful sunset walks.

I can not stress enough how much of a difference from yesterday to today has been after this video! My dog is a English Mastiff at 4 1/2 months old 80lbs already ! He hand never been leashed trained until I got him. I was having some success but he loved to pull and try to get his way. This re-direction training is a 100% absolute must for anyone leash training ANY dog. I used a regular collar and lead however results the same. With about 20 min of work I can now walk my new friend with just two fingers on a loose leash. Unreal ! No jerking , pulling or tugging. 100% different dog today !

Thanks, this is great, wishing all dog owners see this! I was taught really similar decades ago at a community dog training class of all places. My last dog a 60 lb Aussie male got so good off leash, sometimes slight finger signals or often just a look from me to do more, friends and family stunned. RV camping, that's where they would privately ask me if I'd mind 'taking their dogs for a walk'. A couple of these dogs took me ~half hour with lots of distractions (such is where we were), but all good. I found training the owners MUCH more difficult, in fact a few owners were untrainable.

This is absolutely fantastic knowledge. I have an 7 yr old 90lb English American bulldog who always loves having taught leash, a 8 yr old chihuahua and a 14 wk old Lab mastiff x. I did this technique on the older two and night an day difference in 10 min. With the puppy she is very responsive and smart so with a nylon collar just simple guidance and very again stress, very gentle pops and was right where she needed to be. Might of helped watching the bulldog first for her but great results.
Great way to lay it out simple to follow and to the point, not abusive and anxiety creating.
Ps just to pin the point after this walk with all dogs they were happy and extremely cuddly after proving that this is a bonding experience for all.

Yes! Some dogs require it. Due to size, temperament, or behavior issues. As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to properly train your pet. I HATE walking down the street with my small dogs and having to either turn around or completely avoid another dog (usually from a larger breed) because the owner has absolutely no control over the dog. There is a German Shepard in my neighborhood that is a terror he has already attempted to attack multiple dogs while out on walks. Everyone pretty much avoids this dog and all because the owner has not done his job at properly correcting or training his dog, he just expects everyone else to avoid him.

I moved to UK and you wouldn’t believe how sickly and weak the culture is here. Big strong dogs need to know who is boss or they will walk all over you. Zapper collars are being banned here next year. I was taught to do a bop on the nose. It’s not beating or abusing your dog to do a light bop that they find uncomfortable and they don’t like it but it doesn’t hurt them. I’m rough and make it uncomfortable when I need to teach them a lesson. Because of this, I have three young dogs aged 11 months to 3 years who will sit quietly when we have the front door wide open and not run out. In the UK, the road is right near your front door. A friend told me how his kid’s dog ran out the front door into traffic and was hit by a car. 8 year old dog and was never trained! Being a wimp and not being harsh when needed means the dog doesn’t learn. Grabbing my pup by his scruff and bopping his nose meant it only took two or three times (get harsher each time) and then he never did it again. Now I don’t have to be harsh and he only gets cuddles but he won’t bolt into traffic and get hit.

Just caught this video purely by accident. I think your technique is excellent. Was doing this over 25 years ago not including the prong collar. I use to call it the silent walk . The dog doesn't get chastised by the owner as you say learning by its own mistakes. Works an absolute treat. And works every time obviously some dogs don't always pick up straight away. But 99.99% got it . Squeaky voice I would stay away from. Obedience and control was always my start of after that it was pretty much plain sailing. The funny thing was I spent more time training the owners than the dogs . Keep up the great work. Paddy uk 🇬🇧

    • @Rebecca-GLaines
      @Rebecca-GLaines 2 роки тому +3

Yes, training the owners! I've said many times, if you cannot control your animal, you DO NOT need it. That should be top of the list, you do not want the animal playing, yet scare someone and they demand the animal be put down because the owner didn't properly train them.
Like jumping! I love my dogs!! Aka- my babies, I don't like them jumping on me, but a strangers dog?? No!
Rule of thumb, nobody loves your dog like you do. Don't expect them to tolerate your dogs bad behavior, meaning, pet owners need to do better.
It's not the animals fault they don't know how to mind. That responsibility falls 100% on the owner, and if they are not up to the job, they don't need them.
All it requires is love. If you simply love your pet, you will teach obedience. It's NOT cruel. What is cruel is not training them.

Thank you!!! After watching your video, I took my dog for a walk. I’d be dammed if this didn’t immediately do the trick.
I live in Las Vegas in a very busy area. All of the noise from the fast moving traffic as well as all of the pedestrians along our routes are always a distraction for him. But for the first time, using your methods, he was focused, and I actually enjoyed walking him. It took only a few practices in front of the house, and he caught on quickly. I enjoyed our walk so much that we kept walking to the local pet store about 2 miles away; your methods even corrected his behavior while inside the store- he maintained focus the entire time, regardless of the other pets and distractions present in the store. I rewarded him with some doggy ice cream in the parking lot, then we enjoyed our 2 mile stroll home. He’s not perfect, but I know he’s trying. I’m looking forward to enjoying our walks going forward.

He’s not aggressive however he just is so scared and overwhelmed he will urinate and he has these episodes where he can’t breathe properly it scared me and I asked the trainer and she said it’s just because he gets himself so worked up but his whole body stiffens and his breathing is very rapid. I’ve had him in classes and I work with him a little every day and I hope we can go for a nice walk and to the pet store. That would be so great! I’ve used the prong collar before using other trainers advice but it never really worked because my dog didn’t have a pulling problem he has an attention problem. Once I became unpredictable stopping all the time and correcting if he passed my feet and rewarding if he wasn’t, his neck won’t even go past my leg now in three days. It worked after 5 tries. Now she walks close to me for most of our walk and everytime I lose her attention I do it 1 or 2 more times and it brings her attention back to me. We loved our dogs, but they had a job, and that was protect his family & home above all.
We always had boxers, now as an adult, I have 4! If you've ever owned a boxers, you already know this breed! Very happy, basically, a 3 yr old toddler their entire lives! And can be very difficult to train.
Two dogs at at a time I can keep under control, 4 gets a little frustrating because they get tangled up in each other's leashes, but I am SOOOO exited to do this! One dog at a time, then ultimately all. I have zero doubt I can change their behavior now!
(I've got chokers on them all, but they still pull.)
My youngest, Sunny & Tilleigh need this bad. They are the babies, and get away with bad behavior,(thats on me) where the others know better.

I have been using a prong collar on my dog only to keep him from 'exploding.' The rest of the walk didn't concern me much (whether he was in front of me, to the side, distracted, etc.) as long as he wasn't 'exploding.' The other day I saw a video of yours for the first time where you said that a small 'whelp' meant 'I got his attention.' I never wanted to give such a stiff correction so I think I was using the right tool with the wrong technique (too soft).
Anyway, I took my dog out after watching that video and gave him exactly *one correction* when he wandered out in front of me. He gave a little 'whelp.' From that point on he was right next to me and looking up very often. We did the whole walk route without another correction. It has now been three days and I haven't had to give him another correction! (well, I did do the 'cleanup' correction.)
He is now very visually engaged from the time I put the prong collar on him until I take it off. The whole 'walk dynamic' has changed! I try to ensure that, as you say, 'he still enjoys being here' and that he doesn't think I am mad so gets praises and treats along the way.
This was very helpful and extremely encouraging. Thank you!

I have a GSD. The trainer I took him to has bred and trained imported GSD's for police and military work. She says the higher the prey drive in GSD the higher their pain threshold, so he's not yelping over a itty bitty pinch.. The first yelp sounded like half surprise/half pain, but the second yelp broke my heart. I know what it would take to get that loud of a yelp from a high prey drive GSD. Props to the trainer for mentioning his mistake, but looking at how strong he is and the amount of movement in his arm that was not a 3 out of 10, it was more like a 7 or so. Plus, while I have no problem fasting a dog if it speeds up training, but giving him a supplement to INCREASE his hunger on top of that?? That should be unnecessary. I think this guy has some good training tops, but I'd never take my dogs to him. 😢

You know what, you sir at American Standard Dog Training are a breath of fresh air- just started following you recently and will for sure watch all your vids. Love the way you show the process from start to finish. The balanced training is amazing, keep on the amazing work and demonstrations, let the haters keep hating. You are by far the best dog trainer/ guide I’ve come across and your channel is so under rated- I can for sure see it just shooting up, I for sure will share and certainly watch all your stuff 😊

I tried it today with my 9 months german shepherd and it worked. And ALSO after training i unleashed him to go explore around(he really loves to find eat some garbage which is bad i know) but he was right beside me sitting and when i started walking he started walking and when i stopped he also stopped. I am so happy

I can honestly say that I never feel the need to leave a comment on UA-cam videos because they usually just aren’t as helpful as their descriptions portray. But this video, this video has changed everything! In less than 10min I got BOTH of my over 130lb Amberican Bulldog/Neapolitan Mastiff mixes to walk PERFECTLY. They were so engaged immediately after the first correction. I have been using the prong collar wrong all this time! But now my wife and I can actually enjoy our walks. Phenomenal! Awesome work, man!

Love your videos! I have incorporated this training with my bully who is strong & pulls. The 1st correction I felt more than the dog, the yip broke my heart. But what a difference in our walks. 🙂

Don't be soft. He'll survive. If you're soft you have to do it many many times. Do it efficiently and only a few times 👍
