- In this episode Dog training collar with remote + what is the difference between shock collar and e collar professional dog trainer Tom Davis goes over the incredible abilities of the e collar to train your dog. The remote collar is, unfortunately, something that most dog owners don't use properly which leads them to faulty training as well as potential damage. ANYTHING you use to train a dog can be used wrong, the real problem is simple education. We fell that the remote collar is such a fantastic tool for dog trainers and dog owners when introduced both to the dog and the human properly. We train hundreds of dogs on the remote collar successfully giving them the opportunity to live a fulfilled life off-leash with the safety of wireless control. Some counties ban this tool due to the lack of understanding of the collar as well as poorly manufactured remotes that have zero ability to communicate to the dog humanely. MY goal with this video is to unify dog trainers and work with other dog owners who may be against the remote collar use but to understand the sucess of the collar is predicated solely on the owner and quality of the unit. This session is a reenactment of a REAL session we've had here at the UCA. Like many dog trainers, we see this response sometimes with uneducated dog owners and like always they leave the UCA happy knowing everything they thought about the "shock" collar only exists with people who don't know how to use them. I thought the acting was fine. If it's very close to what happened, I'd have to ask the guy "how could you bring your dog so far (as you said) without researching Tom's work enough to know, not only that he uses remote collars, but that they aren't 'shock collars'?" Customer fail.

My dog was trained 15 years ago, we didn’t have this tool, but he had excellent recall…. Until that one time that he didn’t. He suddenly ducked under our fence, ran into the street and hit by a car. It was horrible. He survived, but any tool that can prevent anyone from going through this is worth it.
And even 10 years later, that scene haunts me. He’s an old boy now and lived a long wonderful life, on a leash.
years ago i used a dog trainer, her rotties were so well trained, she said she never unleashes them in the open because they’re still dogs and could get roused and chase a bird, squirrel and then get hit…obviously out in the country is different
In the 90s i used a slingshot to train my dog's recall, and I wasn't the only one doing so.
There was no dog trainers and resources weren't available. I had to figure things out myself, and growing up in rural Europe I observed a greater use of the stick than the carrot. I'm glad that more humane methods have come along, and information is readily available.
I had a Jack Russell dig under wood privacy fence during storm while we were not home. We had a dog house on patio under a roof. This just a storm panic thing. We got home and dog was back in yard, covered in mud, and shaking at door to come in. Inside it was obvious dog was hurt. She had escaped. Ran into road and got hit. Got back in fence by crawling under fence with a shattered hip. The fence had been upgraded multiple times before this. Rocks around fence. Heavy pavers around fence. Chicken wire attached to bottom and laying buried to prevent digging up tp 3 feet from fence. Dog still got out. After accident I cut a doggy door to allow free movement. That completely fixed it.

The last day I went hiking with my dog And as I was sitting down a Vizsla came closer to us,out of curiosity. She was off leash and she behaved fine,but when the owner called maybe like two times but she kept ignoring, that's when the owner used an e-collar. The dog didn't seem to be in pain,simply refocused and went straight back to her owner.
I think this is quite a good example of how useful this tool really is.

Lol so it's simply a band-aid for people who don't want to legitimately train their dogs to listen. If the dog was truly trained it would've listened to her voice.
@@brittany3891 It's not that their dog isn't "truly trained". My dog is very well behaved, highly intelligent, and trained very well. Yet, when he sees a squirrel in the backyard, all bets are off.. He knows the training like the back of his paw, but when his instincts kick in and he tunnel visions, he just doesn't *hear* me. But as soon as that squirrel climbs over the fence and my dog can't see him anymore, he's like "oh hey what's up" and listens again haha.

The first time I watched this, I researched trainers in my area and found one who loved teaching e-collar training. Now my dog can go off leash in our 5 acre area and I don’t have to panic. We work on her training every day. We still have things to work on but she is so much happier and I am so much more relaxed. Best thing I ever did!

How much actual, educated research have you done on cropping and docking? I'm not here to preach and definitely don't even have many answers myself, but I would encourage you to research it and also keep in mind that many many breeders won't even let you have a dobe without first docking the tail; there's reasoning behind that. In any case, I wish you all the best with whatever you choose for any dogs you have.
Samuel Deter Yes, there are some benefits to docking and ear cropping, but it’s mostly to ‘reduce the risk’ of injury and etc. (ear health stuff). Aside from that, most owners get those procedures purely for cosmetic reasons. It is not required for the health of the dog. I have looked into this a lot because I have always loved Dobermans and how they look (with the procedures) and would love to get one in the future, but there really is no reason the average dog owner does this aside from the appearance. I am not inherently against it, I understand the appeal and I do like the look myself, but all i’m saying is don’t get pissed over a shock collar when you do that to ur dog :/ You’re right that most breeders have the dogs come like that, but that’s likely (not 100% sure of the breeders reasons) because most people will end up doing it anyways. The places I looked when trying to find a Dobe to adopt had all their dogs come like that to give them the ‘traditional doberman look’ but maybe it’s a rescue don’t know just a thought 🤷♀️.

@@running2rie fair enough, I appreciate the response. I haven't ever owned one, so don't have any personal experience, but have done a crap ton of research in preparation for hopefully changing that. Aside from true protection work, I would agree with you that docking is just cosmetics. However, in talking to a dozen or so different breeders, I only found two that would even be willing to let me have one with a tail. I've gotten the impression that with a full tail it's a constant issue, to the point of just about getting ready to fall off by the time they've aged anyway (not literally of course, but broken so many times and deformed). That's obviously exaggerated in the case of a properly cared for doberman, but to what extent with one consistently outdoors in the woods or elsewhere? (
Samuel Deter Yes if it’s a protection animal or one that’s constantly outdoors I see the need (for the tail docking at least), hence the ‘reduces risk of injury.’ but for the normal house dog it’s just for cosmetics. I think I saw one of the kardashian or jenner girls has a dobe, and her dog is purely to look ‘cool’. Like I said, I’m not against it (I personally do like the look, but I’m hesitant because I know I just like the look, not necessarily the benefits, and that’s the reason I still have yet to get a dobe) , just confused as to his reaction (if he did adopt from a breeder or have the procedures done) of being upset over that but doing that to your dog purely for the cosmetics, without doing it in the better interest of the dog.

Theres a difference between something that is done at a few days of life which the dog doesn't remember and something that purposely punishes an animal with pain
I'm pro e-collar and want to thank you for putting this info out there to educate dog owners on using this tool!!! I use to be against the "shock collar" due to to lack of knowledge and after working with a local knowledgeable dog trainer here in TX, I fully understand the correct way to use this tool and not be afraid of it. Now my almost 2yr old pitty heels from really long distances without even touching the e-collar. It has also helped to sharpen his basic obedience training he has received and now protective training. THANK YOU

Yes! I did this with the prong collar we used to help leash train one of my dogs. Nothing else worked and we went to a set of training classes and the trainer recommended the prong collar for us. He explained it well, so we got one. I was still a little uncomfortable using it on my dog so I put it on myself first to see what it was like. When people see my dog with a prong collar on, if they say something, it's always a negative reaction. I tell them what the trainer told us about it and that I tested it on myself and it seems to at least soften their opposition to the device.

Im a doberman owner. He should know that cropping the ears it is a much more painful process for the dog than the training collar. Just saying..
Thaaaaaaank you. I have a pitty rescue and I am so so thankful that on top of the neglect she suffered she did not have to go through ear cropping, especially since she was neglected they likely would have ended up infected :(
cropping and docking is done when the dog is a puppy so they don’t even remember it and also they give the dog something that makes them sleep

My dog is SEVERELY reactive. And very stubborn. Idk how many times an e collar stopped her from lunging (make her lay down) and getting hit by cars.
My question is. In the future will you still need the remote collar in order for your dog to walk outside with out a leash ?
@@josephanthonyrivas I always have them wear it but that doesn't mean I use it. Your never know when something unexpected is going to happen and you'll need it so at least for me it's like a safety net. It's important to work really carefully with this tool in the beginning, preferably with a professional dog trainer so as not to mess it up, once you've passed that stage you'll probably won't have to make much use of it. In my case, my dogs wear it when we go out, and specially when I know I'll let them loose, if I see behaviour that could end up in something risky, all I have to do is click on the beep button as a warning and they know they have to stop it and only if they don't stop I use shock button. I would say that out of 100 beeps 2 of them end up on the shock button. This is why it's so important to get help when setting all of this up because if done incorrectly, it might even end up in a dog getting used to the stimulus and completely ignoring you, or reacting totally opposite to what we want. It works when they're socializing too, for example, one of my dogs has this issue of (sorry to say this) wanting to hump on all of the dogs he meets, it used to bring us a lot of trouble because quite often it would end in fights. Now with the shock collar all I do is send a beep when I see his intentions before he starts with that unwanted behavior. One day, in a public park, a woman's dog was so annoying because he kept trying to hump on mine, I swear he kept harassing him and other dogs as well... when the lady finally came to get him off my dog, she pointed at my dogs ecollar and made a comment that I was being abusive by using that on my dog. I didn't say anything, she just left angry and minutes later another dog bit hers badly because she wasn't able to control his dog's annoying behavior. So the way I see it, I'd rather teach my dog well and rarely use that tool but have it handy because dogs are living beings and they are bound to react differently according to the situation and we all know life enjoys surprising us!
@@josephanthonyrivas anytime there are cars and I want to have my dog off leash, we use the ecollar. I can trust her in certain situations, but I like having the ecollar because the stimulation can travel much farther than my voice.
@@josephanthonyrivas . yes . a dog can "forget" but the collar gives a BEEP, then a VIBRATION, then a STIMULI (yes a static 'shock', much like rubbing your feet on the carpet in winter and then touching the TV ..) usually the BEEP is all it takes for them to "remember" real quick ..

In this scenario, why wouldn’t you start off by saying “it’s more of a vibration rather than shock”....wouldn’t that ease the owner’s mind quicker?
That's how my trainer introduced it to me. My trainer actually made me wear it in my palm. It's not a shock. It allows me to communicate to my dog that keep her safe.

That's where I would start along with offering it to the owner first to try.. There is no way your putting something on my dog without me feeling what she would feel first. You can tell me all day long but show me!
Love educating people on the differences of shock vs E collars. People still think they're being used like they were way back when, when painful shocks were the only option.

I'm so glad that the owner was openminded. Letting him experience the remote collar was effective to convince him that it doesn't hurt the dog. i had put a HS prong collar on my neck and experienced how it would work on my dog, too.

What type of e-Collar would you recommend for a Husky? I ask because I find his neck to be filled with so much hair that maybe a mini wouldn't work? I don't know. Maybe it's a dumb question???
Oscar H. I am having this problem with my long haired German Shepherd. He did not seem to respond at all to the e-collar (we have the Mini-Educator). His neck fur is very thick and I think he just didn’t feel anything. I am looking for advice myself.

Outstanding video! My Corgi had a similar near-death experience. I had purchased a bargain unit, but never used it. My daughter has three dogs and she explained how the collar worked and has had a great experience with hers. I originally purchased the same unit, but traded it in for a $200 collar. Thank you for your help with Boomer's training.

The training collar is not harmful. It is very helpful for training with my Mastiffs. And plus the docked ears and the docked tail, does not harm the dog. He is a Professional dog trainer, he knows what he is doing. And knows it is not harming the dog.
@@jadenchambers9795 I know the uses of it. Tail docking is 50/50 with me, on my English mastiff I wish we had docked it because he keeps breaking it by sitting on it.
Ears should only be clipped if they are a protection dog, for people or livestock.
@@jadenchambers9795 with a dog as smart as a Doberman I fail to see the need for one. I had a Doberman and yes she would get out or catch an unresistable smell as s puppy but she never failed to listen to her stop now and stay command. Training taking time to teach a dog basic safety commands are so much better.
@@alyssa_the_noodle5228 I know people who docked ears because it also helps those prone to infection prevent it. As long as it is done young, correctly and safely I don’t really care either way. I have more of an issue with people getting dogs they can’t handle or properly care for than ears and tails.

Great Video Tom! This scenario is NOT an isolated event. Who cares it was a reenactment! It contains great info and you did a great job of educating with patience and understanding. Good for you for not just walking away as I am sure you get tired of repeating yourself day in and day out. But because it is so important, you take the time. I will thank you on behalf of the dogs whose lives will be saved because ppl decided to consider an e-collar from seeing the benefit and realize the dog is not being hurt.
An e-collar saved the dog I rescued. We were doing great on every aspect of training, including recall. That was until my horses decided to go for a run. The dog's pray drive kicked in and there was no way she was coming back to me! She then found this to be a fun game. It got to the point where my very tolerant horses were starting to kick at her. She got a good boot from one of the horses one day. I was so happy, because it was hard enough it got her attention and she came back to me yelping. But it wasn't a bad enough kick to seriously harm her. At this point most dogs would have a healthy respect for horses after that kick and would no longer chase horses. It was a perfect scenario that I felt would now keep her safe. I was wrong. The next day she was back chasing and nipping at the horses. So my only other option until I could find her a new home was an e-collar. It took some time for it to no longer be an issue, but it did work! I don't know what I would have done if an e-collar wasn't an option. I truly believe it saved her life because it was only a matter of time before she got a blow to the head. She found a loving home and is doing great to this day. The outcome would have been very different otherwise.

The E-collar or I just say shock collar, I am not politically correct, lol, has helped me Tremendously, I did not use the think E or Pinch Collars were really all that helpful but I have changed my mind!!! I've had friends who think I am horrible for using these collars, my reply is that my dogs Love it when I get the E- /shock collars out as they know we're gonna outside for a walk ect,(I use sport dog brand and as it says on the instructions the setting you use depends on the STUBBORNESS of your dog!) So anyways, some of my friends reactions, I tell them living out on the farm and having neighbors with all kinds of livestock, plus we have all sorts of wildlife going through our Property too, I will not risk my dogs being SHOT DEAD, OR SERIOUSLY WOUNDED because their brain checked out while chasing other animals, a shock is much better! And I've been on the other side, have had people who are not responsible for their dogs letting them run and after 2 warnings, so my husband had to take care of the issue. And people have the right to shoot dogs chasing wildlife on their private property. It has also helped my dogs, especially my 11 1/2 yr old GSD get use to cats, my husband has 4 cats, my dog had never been around cats, so at 9 yrs old that was Interesting we have goats now too, and the neighbors run their cattle in here in the spring and other neighbors, horses n mules, so, what a life saver and as I am disabled, it has helped me so much when walking and letting my dogs have Freedom to run and explore as I can't walk for an hour or 2 anymore. I get so frustrated when people don't like to try theses tools and or don't even care enough about their dogs/pets, (I'm thinking about using a collar on 1 of our Ornery goats, haha!!) to TRY before getting rid of them! And thank you Upstate Canine Academy for all that you do!!!! I wish that there were trainers like you here in the PNW!!!

I understand Why' - you ask people to refrain from 'judgment' - when trying to explain use of new tools, like e-collar, shock collar. Its like, to you, they have made up their mind without ever giving it a chance. Probably very frustrating from your point of view?
Did you talk, I mean - really talk - with the dog breeder/source of your "pet"?
There are way too many people who "want" a working dog; but are unwilling to invest the time it takes to bond with the dog. Example: I want a (working bred) GSD, but I live in condo community, no park, no fence backyard, and 3 kids - under 10 years old, with lots of friends coming in and out al the time … so I need to force the dog to accept living in an environment it is "Not" predisposed to accept...so it must submit?
How about choosing the proper dog to fit the need rather than forcing inappropriate behavior from a dog - who was genetically bred to behave in just the way you.. are truing to suppress?
I want a smoot riding "Pickup truck" with great gas mileage … that is easy to park and maneuverable in traffic, hauls 4 tons, while towing 15 ton. Is that "asking for too much"?
The issue is bad choices, in the first place - nothing wrong with the dog - it was bred to take charge, investigate strange creatures in its territory and "Think independently, if you are not around".
Why get an aggressive dog breed, when you don't have the time, space or physical ability to control it? In other words - maybe its like a fashion choice: you can't mix stripes with poka dots or bikini's and fur coats?
@@JustinAEgan I so agree with some of what you said, and I hope I can express myself clearly as, my thoughts can get ahead of me and I lose track ect. I have had GSD's for the 38 yrs, my very 1st one was a rescue she was approx. 3 yrs old according to my Vet, his best guess,, she was picked up as a stray, would go sit on peoples steps so the dog catcher couldn't get her, then the people I got her from rescued her, took 3 men to get her in the car, so, my question regarding her was, did she Love children as my 2 were 3 and under, so I took her, at that time I lived on a 200 acre, she was an Awesome dog, apparently already trained, healed on the walk, when horseback riding would heal, ect, she Loved Children, baby animals, and was Very well behaved anywhere, also could be Very Protective when needed, she was a THINKER! She really spoiled me it was like she could read my mind!!!! That being said ANY DOG ANY SIZE can be aggressive if not properly trained, doesn't matter the size or the breed and sometimes it's Genetics, most often it is people don't want to take the TIME to TRAIN their dogs (and their children for that matter). Oh and my 1 1 1/2 Yr old GSD, he's huge, Adores Children, and is Very Social, when we go Square Dancing at the Senior Center ( I won't be taking him anymore as it's a long day/drive and to difficult for him) I wrap his Leash in his Harness and he WORKS THE ROOM, as in goes and says HI TO EVERYONE!!! He's a talker and Loves his butt scratched and treats, and yet, he knows when some one is Dangerous, and will protect me when I was threatened. So in my humble opinion dogs are so much like people. oh and my now 1 1/2 yr old GSD is very shy/fearful, doesn't want to say hi, just wants to be with me. And that's another reason why I use a shock collar when out walkin to keep that youngster from playing to rough with the old dog as he has knocked him down. We all have different perspectives, hope I made sense, sorry so long winded! Hope you can find a Wonderful dog!!!
Tom, with someone that is "reactive" like the male owner, would it be more helpful to demo the e-collar BEFORE using it on the dog? They "might" have a better understanding of what the dog is feeling. Enjoy your work a lot, Tom. Y'all Be Safe!

I've had so many ppl tell me how to do their hair, chemically for instance, with colors, and I tell them how wildly off they are, they arrogantly tell me they know their hair and this is how it's done, and then we have to fix it with a protocol far more complicated than my original plan, which would have achieved what they were attempting. I have grown past allowing this anymore as I don't have time to "mess up" a client's hair the way they want me to and then have to take four more hours later to fix it.... So yeah... I am, so glad you have made this video. I, hope people will learn that the e collar is a great life saver for all dogs that need their freedom to run and just be a dog. I am , here to tell you that if it were not for this collar I could never have a large dog. I am, handicapped and I live alone. My, lab mix is my everything to me. I , was never able to take a shower at night before I had her. She, will always let me know when something is wrong. I, feel so much safer with her even at night. I, have to use the e collar all the time with her when we go outside. ALWAYS, ON VIBRATE LOW NUMBER. IT, DOES NOT HURT HER ONLY CATCHES HER ATTENTION. ALSO, she understands my verbal commands . A, leash never worked for us!! Dogs, have the mind of a three year old. She, was on a leash one day she saw a cat and and I was pulled out of my wheelchair and I was unable to get myself back in my chair. Thank, GOD I was wearing my life line and could call for help !!!!! After, that happened I said never again !! Now, we both are so much happier and relaxed on our walks which are much longer because of the e collar !!!

Old comment, but I wonder if in your 41st year of training you learned humility? It’s because of martial arts that I’m confident I wouldn’t be reactive. How many times have you tested your skill against an equal or better opponent? It didn’t take most people I’ve trained with to realize that there is nothing to prove with violence, and the only end to that means is preserving life.

You relate information really well, and can give visual demonstrations which is the best way to teach people. This kind of work is hard for so many. TOM I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I think you did an extraordinary job winning the angry owners over with the remote collar & actually demonstrate what the dog feels, you gained their trust. Owners needs to understand that dogs need pack leaders & structure. Once owners learn how their dogs think & remember what's natural for them, we will be better owners.

99 percent of the people I run into always think my dog has a shock collar. Most of the time I just say "it's the same as the physical therapy machine, just with a remote. Not a shock". With family I always put it in their hand on my dogs level and they can never feel it ( E collar ET300) on level 8
Just like a brake pedal and a kill switch both technically slow a car down but are completely diffrent things. So yes shock collars can look like e collars but the way they work and how the dog ends up feeling are night and day. Shock collars hurt to get a dogs attention. E collars get their attention in a much diffrent way that does not hurt them. If you statred to high from not undestanding it would be just as shocking as a human comming up and suddenly shaking your arm not enough to hurt but violently enough to scare the piss out of you. You as a oerson would scream in fright and a dog most likley yelps in fright. But a yelp of shock and of non stop pain are a very different kind of noise. If you have ever had the horror of seing a dog hit by car but not killed outright. That is a yelp of pain. I can hear it forever just thinking of the moment. A yelp of a missused ecollar never sounds like that. A missused shock collar certainly does have that horrible quality. Please never use a shock collar even on a person. But im certainly tempted when i hear of or see someone use one on their own dog.
To “Purely Positive” only people:
I want to share a story.
My dog is, now was, highly food aggressive. Has been since she was a puppy. She also has confidence issues and high anxiety.
One day. During me trying to purely positive train, I got bit. She barely missed my eye. At that point...I knew. Something had to change. I had been working with her professionally and everyday, personally, with “pure positive” training for TWO YEARS.
IT WAS NOT WORKING.
eventually, I knew there was two options: putting her down OR try a new style of training.
I found someone who does e-collar work and let me say...it not only helped her confidence and anxiety but it gave me a tool, as the owner, to effectively communicate with her. It changed our lives and saved hers.
1. Her aggression issues have all but disappeared towards strangers and people touching her.
2. She can now RELAX and be a normal dog. She doesn’t have to feel like she needs to be on alert all the time.
3. Her food aggression issues get better EVERY SINGLE DAY. Because, I have a tool to safely and effectively communicate with her.
4. I spent two years working to get to the point, that three weeks of training with an e-collar got me to.
5. DON’T SPREAD FAKE NEWS. If you are simply against E-Collars because you think it’s abusive. Try having to decide to put your dog down, because no other training worked for you.
6. Pure positive might work for some dogs, but not all.
7. I would rather my dog be in for a moment of uncomfortable sensation than be hit by car, mauled by a bear, or what ever other situation they might find themselves in, that their prey drive takes over and you don’t matter.
I guarantee, if I did a poll of purely positive trainers and asked how many of them are training dogs to live in cities...the majority would say yes. I don’t live in a city. I live in the woods. Deer, bear, coyotes, mountain lions, SKUNKS, and other wild animals are around. E-collar work has given us the freedom of off-leash walks, without the problem of her chasing those animals.
Mind you, she always came back, but only after the chase was done.
With that, her recall had always been great...if I could catch her before she saw the animal first. Once she saw that animal. Prey drive kicked in and she was in for the chase.
All the E-collar does, and only if I need it now, is remind her to listen. And I repeat IT DOES NOT HURT.
Stop spreading bad information...it only hurts the same animals we all love.

If it doesn't hurt, then it must be fairly mild, in which case, what is the difference between that and your voice? If it doesn't hurt that means you did some excercises teaching your dog that vibration = look at me with a positive association, so even mid prey drive they are being interrupted. I don't see how you couldn't do the same with your voice. I'm currently raising a pup myself and doing recall exercises with my voice only and it's going quite well.
Just the other day I was able to my dog to follow me around and sit calmly while 6 other dogs were running around right next to her. Even when another dog was walking nearby and every other dog was barking and going crazy, my dog sat next to me laser focused on me. My secret? A clicker, and the occasional tiny piece of cheese. I focus on keeping the treats out of view so she doesn't know when I have them and when I don't, and I can fairly reliably get focus back on me (she's still young and we haven't been perfect with her training from day 1, so her progress is probably behind where it could be, but she's still quite good, and we're continuing to do exercises on recall and stay with distraction, but already in the familiar area around our house she can be let off leash without issue.
Personally I don't know what my opinions are on e-collars other than I'd rather not have to depend on them as they aren't cheap and seem unwieldy, so I'm not judging, I just haven't heard a good reason for actually needing them that can't be overcome with solid training using a clicker and some tasty treats.
In my personal experiences as a dog trainer the most effective way of training is positive reinforcement but that is my opinion! If an e collar will save the dogs life then I think that they are great but I feel like there are different ways to train before you go to e collars, like you did It seems like! 😊

I would absolutely NEVER use a shock collar on my dogs, but this one has really opened my eyes. Thank you for showing it and explaining it so well.
Shock collars don't exist anymore. They stopped making them around 2008. What he's using is a modern e-Collar that has the same tech in it that a physiotherapists TENS machine has.
Because your knowledge or past experience with these were most likely from a cheap Petco or PetSmart collar that usually has levels of low, medium or high and doesn't give you the communicative low levels to teach with. At these levels, it's like tapping the dog on their neck like hey you, hey you, and the dog acts like what? You talking to me? Then now that you have their attention, their focus is on you and the cleaity is on what do you want! Oh come, sure right away, got it!
Now would you need to use a higher level? You bet you will, if the dog is heading full speed into life threatening danger and is 1000% focused on the target and doesn't see or care there is a semi truck ready to make him a pancake, you crank that bad boy up and stop him in his tracks, like waking him from a hypnotic trance! Ok that zapped him, even if he let out a loud yelp, but that split second zap saved his life and in another minute, after he returns to you alive, he will forget that heavy zap but he will never forget what it was meant for! Same thing with your small child running at danger. You most likely you can't catch a speeding dog, but you can and will catch a toddler. And most parents will spank that child because you feel the need to connect the action to danger so it doesn't happen again. Well when your dog is 100 feet away and heading towards death, you need to spank it hard from a distance so they STOP and don't do it again!
The bottom line here is trained properly with the obedience and e-collar at low levels avoids the life and death situation from ever becoming the problem! Early training is key and always the best option to reenforce the communication.
NO CLICKER AND FOOD REWARD WILL EVER STOP AN OBCESSED FOCUS DOG PUMPED FULL OF ADRENALINE FOCUSED ON ITS TARGET, HEADING INTO DANGER! AND IF SOMEONE OUT THERE BELIEVES THAT, I'LL ASK YOU JUST ONE QUESTION. WOULD YOU BET YOUR DOGS LIFE ON IT?

@@miriamjfischer Oh goodness. What are the manufacturer names of those? (To make sure I can avoid them and point them out to people.) There are only 2 e-collars I use, Garmin - which is generally softer at lower levels, and Dogtra which can be a little more noticeable for a dog that is more independent. The trainer in this video appears to be using a Dogtra, from what the handheld looks like.

Teach the dog the command sit down, place , and recall add in the remote collar as you go; layer the training. The trainer teaches this in this video before long you no longer need a leash how awesome is that 😃!!
When owners begin to realize the advanced levels of obedience you can reach using a training collar and that it’s actually far less pressure than other tools they will be pleasantly surprised like this couple in the skit were. At the end of the day we are trying to broaden our dogs horizons so we can have more fun with them ! Let them dogs run !!Off leash collar training is the way to go !!😃

Such a great video, we got one of these style collars a few months ago. I’ve only had to use the shock 3 times, Loki responds really well just to the beep and the vibrate. I was one of the people that didn’t like them and now I understand them and it’s been such a blessing to have.

You're an God send for ALL dogs and their owner alike. I have used and still do on my GSD when necessary and ALWAYS have it on when he is outside around other folks including babies and children and heavy traffic. You never know. People ask me ALL the time. HOW did you get your GSD to be SO well behaved? I've also LITERALLY had people STOP me in public and tell me how much they wish their GSD was so well behaved. These collars are AMAZING. I am a native of Saratoga Springs and have also lived in CP and it's EXTRA nice to see someone SO close by doing EXCELLENT work with dogs and their owners. My dad actually trained both our dogs with electric collars. We dont use shocking because they are responsive enough to the sound of a beep or vibration the collar makes. It's very rare to use a shock and even then it's the lowest setting so they arent harmed. He gets compliments from neighbors all the time about how well trained they are
The vibration is a little strong for my dogs and one hates the beep, so I'm thinking about using the lowest level shock instead. I think they are just too sensitive.

I think this was a great video representing how proper use of an e-collar (yes, they can shock but they also vibrate and do tone) is a truly effective tool. As you said every dog is different and will respond at different levels and different methods (that is why training needs to be a tailored approach, not one size fits all). You do speak dog but I disagree with your comment that you are an advocate for the tool. I say that you are an advocate for the dog and don't want the tools utilized to be misrepresented by improper or unsafe use. Your ultimate goal is in the livelihood of the dog.

I have a 110 GSD in Canada and I am so glad I bought an E-Collar for him because I never thought I would be able to keep him even though I have had GSDS all my life this one is a runner and I almost lost him so Thankyou you saved my Dogs life because I was able to use the Vibrations and put him on a down stay just before he was hit by a car

Very good explanation of what the collar is meant for. I've used them to train dogs in the past as well as cats and they work well. Have 2 cats that follow all their basics with no collar and currently working on training my 8 week old Thai Ridgeback. Keep up the good work.

Thank You for putting it out there. I use one on my Aussie, her recall is fantastic unless she she’s another dog! She’s never bit or hurt another dog or person but she runs up full speed, dogs and owners freak .. so.. for us it’s essential. At this point I don’t go out without it. She responds well set at only a 3 or 4.

I had 2 GSP's and both trained on Tritronic e-collars, which was 20 years ago. I now have a super sweet 11 month old golden doodle (talking difference in training needs) and did professional traning again as refresher for my self and good structured training catered to Remy's needs. He knew his commands really well, but started ignoring re-call by choice when something more interesting (people, dogs, squirrels, etc) crossed his path. I was hessitant with e-collar at that point because Remy is so young and "back in the day" you did not start dogs on e-collars until the were at least a year. Our trainer introduced the Tom Davis 280C e-collar and I was extremely impressed with how far the technology has come on these collars.
Remy got introduced with 8 month (level 4-8) and did really well with it. He is one happy dog and loves nothing more than going for a good hike in the woods and me letting him run off the leash and I have peace of mind that I have an invisible leash to re-invorce an ignored recall if needed. Tom, you are an amazing canine trainer and I love how you break it down so clear and professional to the owners, what the problem of a missbehaved dog is, 90% ot the time the human behind it.
My dog was traumatized by a trainer who started with the shock collar on 40 . I was really upset . Its nice to see how to use one properly.

You are one of few trainers I know of that are actually telling people, in the most basic sense, “a dog is a dog not a person, we need to treat it as a dog, and here is how you can actually talk to your dog XYZ”. I learned something very valuable today. Living in fear everyday that my dog could get out of my reach and get smashed by a truck. The pain from a truck vs a buzz on the neck..a buzz like an electronic massage tool that i know the feeling. Make me totally change my mind about the e collar
Loved the training, I have a goofy dobie boy (with floppy’s) he “forgets” to listen sometimes. I just ordered the 280c for his safety.
That was squirm level 100. I thought you were gonna get punched. You just taught me everything I didn't know about e collars, and more importantly, how to use one the proper way. You verbally got your point across to me, but the dog's positive response tells the whole story. Thank you for sharing.
E-collar helped us with aggression in our dog, she's the sweetest chillest dog we know now. Confident and responsive. We get a lot of flack for having a "shock collar" so we try to make those people hold it and we press the button so they can feel what it's really doing. Anyone in therapy would know these as mini TENS units.

Good to see you get to explain yourself and demonstrate the reality of what you were doing. Good on the owner for being skeptical and trying to be good spokesmen for their dog but also knowing when it's time to apologize for how they acted. I feel like this was my story when my trainer was encouraging us to work with a herm springer prong collar.

Thank you for this video. I have two crazy GSD puppies and my trainer recommended a similar e collar system. It's amazing how many ignorant people judge us concerning the e collars, when they don't realize that my greatest concern is to do what I must to train my dogs in a way that prevents them from harmful behaviors they may ultimately lead to euthanasia. Not on my watch! I love my puppies too much.

great job I had a trainer start with the collar on 40 my dog was traumatized for days . i really appreciate knowing how to use it properly .
I had a similar reaction when my husband bought an e-collar for our terrier pup is who very difficult to train. My lab trained by voice very easily. He spoiled me with at ease of training by voice, treat, and eventually back to voice and praise only.
I don’t know much about the collar my husband bought, so I’m studying it now and will not use it until I’m sure it’s a variable range that will not hurt him, but become an extension of my touch not a punitive device. My husband has lost his patience with him already and bought it as a punitive device. So, his attitude towards training the pup is skewed already. Once I’ve trained the pup, my spouse will need training, too!

I’ve used the 10s unit for medical purposes and will be careful to properly train our pup. He already sits on command, but will not come and barks incessantly at almost everything!
Love and kindness goes far in training. There is no need to be punitive if the human is not ignorant and lazy. It is an honor to be trusted by a pet and will not compromise his upcoming treat training which begins in earnest tomorrow. Hopefully, using further control with the collar will not be needed, but I will be less apprehensive now after watching your video.

I have used a " E " collar for fence aggression at the dog park. People walk along the fence letting their little " Fee fee " or " Fido " pee on the fence or aggressively charge the fence. My dog hated that. I shared this vid on my FB wall. TY!
NEVER! did I shock her ever. When your dog is aggressive or you think your dog is " a little snotty " get help. We all are all her to learn from one another and having fun!
Trained my dog on a crappy collar, switched to a quality mini educator collar. The difference is night and day. The stimulation is way way better. More of a direct stimulation than before. I can use way less stimulation than with the cheap one.

Wolffy93 Hey how u use the collar is called escape training right? Where you start vibrating the collar when you tell the doggo to come, and the vibrating stops once they reach you. Is this correct?
@@oofutile3530 yeah pretty much that when you start conditioning the collar except instead of vibration I used a low level electric stimulation. I used direct leash pressure, something I had already taught, then gave my dog the come command until he would yield to the leash pressure then mark and reward with food. Do that for like 3-4 days until the dog understands the meaning of the tool.

That was a great episode, this happens sooooooo often without accurate explanation and instruction. I am a dog owner and even though by baby girl is super well trained (and yes also trained with a remote collar) I almost never have to use it, but there have been times when it was a life savor, for instance when we were out hiking and she would get to far away to hear me calling that I use the lowest setting of vibrate ( mine has vibrate: 3 levels; tingle: 1-120 levels; beep: 3 distinct sounds; and led lights: 3 different settings with a half mile range) and in less than two minutes she was right back by my side happy and tail wagging although a bit muddy lol I love her more than anything and you better believe I tried it on my self first because of all the negative things I had heard and read, but I didn’t like keeping her cooped up and not able to let her roam free and just have fun being a dog, so I tried it and now we both get to enjoy life to the fullest, she gets to roam, romp, and play and I have peace of mind that if she go to far to hear me I have an extended light touch to tell her what I need from her. So thank you soooo much for this episode I hope everyone in the world get to see it one day.
I totally agree with remote collars, I used to have a spine stimulator implanted in my back, seems to be the same idea. Just waiting for mine to arrive so I can begin introducing the cats and very aggressive dog. Wish me luck .

I'm so grateful to have found you. I used a trainer years ago who used these types of collars and trained people to use them. He called them SHOCK collars and he taught to put them on high and when your dog does something bad zap them and say, "No!" The jerk was supposed to be a Professional. That's why I went to him and paid him. Needless to say I quit. I just couldn't do that to my furbaby. I honestly believe that it's "Trainers" like this who are getting these devices banned. I, too, had felt they should be banned until I found you. You are AWESOME! I think there should be laws that ONLY people qualified like you should be allowed to teach the use of these devices. THANK YOU SOMUCH for this channel and for being who you are. I truly appreciate you.
