Yeah I was stupid enough to buy another set of joycons thinking that regular grip has charging. And here I am searching for charging one

this accessory is deffinatley not mandatory! I think it's more for when you have two sets of joycons for multiplayer , as you can charge your 1st set in the dock and never have to worry about running out of juice because the joycons have a 20h battery life . so for two sets of joycon I see the point in this accsessory
Witters yeah that's the reason why I want one also I just bought a new pair of Joy con so I don't want them just sitting around not being charged even though they do last a hell of a long time
I just bought a switch oled and I’m incredibly frustrated that this isn’t just part of the purchase. I just assumed I would be able to charge the controller without having to pop them off and put them back on the base. I was searching all over the grip for a plug in until I finally took to UA-cam to see if I’m insane. I honestly can’t believe it.
I bought one of these but only because I opted to go with another set of Joycons over the pro controller. I was extremely surprised by how comfortable I found the included grip with joycons docked to be. After that I decided that it would be better for me to get a second set of Joycons and another grip so I'm good for games like Mario Kart 8 that will use the joycons separate for 4 player split screen. I went with a charge grip over a standard since I wanted a second grip anyways and this way I can charge both sets at once..

Ya I agree! It should have come with system. There isn't that much of a C.B. in the that would have jump the cost. But with so many people (especially UA-cam channels and publications talking about this very thing), they may start adding into the overall package. At least we can only hope Nintendo is listening.
I also feel that it should have been included with the console. Really doesn’t make sense why they made the unchargeable control
I just bought a switch and i had no idea i would need to spend an extra $100.00 on accessory's like LAN adaptor and joy con charging grip.
Hopefully they will eventually include this with the system (and a game). I can dream can't i?

Don't buy this accessory. The Joy Cons have a 20 hour ! Battery life , then you put them on the switch console and they charge relatively quickly. Who is going to be playing for 20 hours straight?

The reason I said the grip charger is a waste of money is because I believed at the time that it's over priced. There's no battery inside of the grip. You have to plug it into the wall at all times for the joy cons to charge. It's no exaggeration to say that they just put a hole into the grip and that's it. You had to pay $10 extra dollars just for that instead of a battery. The standard grip is $20 while this was $30. I believed at the time that there would eventually be third party accessories that would be much cheaper than this. I recommended the pro controller because it was worth the value.

No internal battery. So it just basically routes power from the Joycons to the USB port. Probably would have cost them an extra 50c to add wiring to the included grip, but $$$

I feel like it should of been included but definitely not mandatory. Each con is good for about 20 hours, I'm sure eventually you will connect it back to the console and charge the system, right lol

6 years later, and I'm watching this video for the first time...😄...also, you said exactly what I've been thinking, ever since 2017, when I got my first Switch...why didn't Nintendo just include this particular Charging Grip with the System in the first place? It would've made much more sense if they had, and made the system even more enjoyable. Everyone plays their Switch differently...some love Handheld Mode the most, and others, straight up stick with it in their Docks, and both are awesome playing experiences...but...they should've, and still should, include this with the system itself.
its gonna be better if they include it with the system just like a charger should be included when you buy a phone, but it is not that necessary actually cuz joycon got like 20hr battery and as long as you charge it on the system at night it's gonna last the whole day. so its kinda not worth the money to buy it but its definitely great if they can include it originally
It will be nice if it is included with the console but, it's not necessary to buy. Anyway if you need extra grip controller get the "Pro Controller" more comfortable to hold and it's has own batteries .

Huge Nintendo fan. But I have to say, this seems a little like Nintendo sticking its hand in my pocket. I'm not sure that I consider this accessory essential, but you kind of do need an extra adapter, extra storage, and either a Pro controller or an extra set of JoyCons. And of course, you need a game! Hard to defend this being so much more expensive than the other consoles.

you probably won't ever need the regular one again now that you have the same thing with a built in charger. Nintendo should have definitely included that with the system

I'm thinking of getting this, only for the official Nintendo USB C cable. Its only sold with the grip and the $70 pro controller. (Why it's not sold on its own, I do not know)
I wanna play my Switch in handheld mode while charging it, and I don't wanna risk charging it with a standard USB C cable, since some of them can harm your Switch.

Kind of wished they included this for the OLED. After all, it's basically a superior version of the og. But it's business so I can definitely understand.
I have no idea why Nintendo didn’t do that. I feel like they could sell more of these if it came with the OLED set because many people underestimate this accessory.

They could have at least included a USB-C cable. So I could plug and play on the go without having to put the console in the dock all the time.

I think most people who want a regular controller are more interested in the Pro controller anyway. So Nintendo figured that not enough people will care that much in order to constitute the increase cost for the charging feature. Im also sure that most of it has to do with increasing their profit margin,, but thats ok. Nintendo has a right to make money. I feel more slighted over the fact that "One Two Switch" wasn't bundled.

How to charge the joy cons without buying any accessories: when you have the screen inside the dock, have the joy cons attached to the screen that is inside the dock. It should charge the joy cons. Leave it off. And finally when it's on and you take it out and put the joy cons on the grip, they should be fully charged.

I think that it doesn't have a battery and also the batteries last 20 hours anyway, so I'd just get a pro controller.

The reason why it wasn't included with the switch it's because Nintendo would rather sell it separately so they could make more money. Why bundle it with the switch when Nintendo could make $30 or $40 extra from each one of those. Nintendo probably made an extra 3 hundred thousand dollars or more from it. I would do the same to if I could make a lot more money from it. It's called business. That's why they have new wireless N64 controllers for the switch to make more money. I love my Nintendo switch though. Great console

It's completely unnecessary. I have put over 20 hours into Breath of the Wild playing on my TV with the joy-con in the grip that was included with the system, and the joy-con batteries have never even gone below 70%. The system battery is always going to be the limiting factor.
What about when playing on TV Mode and your system is docked???

the real cost for nintendo is the extra USB-C cable. They would have needed to include in the console bundle. I know that sounds absolutley insane but the proper safe new style usb-c cables are expensive (in large scale terms). The 5 dollar cables you see on amazon are thrash and are not insulated well and can over or undercharge your device. Nintendo actually included very high quality C type cables with the controllers, knowing how important it was to the reliability of the system. USB-C is a different animal all togteher. dont get it confused with a typical old school USB cable. Im not a nintendo fanyboy at all, its just the truth. I would love to say nintendo should have included it in the system (I bought one as well), but the fact is that it will not be an issue for 99.99% of nintendo's targeted demographic for the system. Hardcore 20 hour+ gamers (nintendo doesnt even have Massive Multiplayer Online games like destiny that have NO pause button) are NOT using nintendo's hardware. They are using PC and PS4.
