    The idea of the Joy-Con Charging Grip is to buy together with a secund set of Joy-Cons, so you can charge both sets at the same time and a set never go out of battery + you have 2 grips. And, probably the Switch dont come with the Charging Grip because Nintendo think that it is not necessery to use with 1 set of Joy-Con.

    • @Randomsae
      @Randomsae 7 років тому +8

      This makes perfect sense. But if you are able to plug a set of Joycons into the Switch to charge while using another pair to play, this then doesn't make much sense.

    • @Kotonaru16

      I think, it is more to people that play a lot with others, like a family with kids(a big portion of Nintendo plublic). That way 2 or 4 people can play during the day with the 4 Joy-Cons and during the night charge both pair of Joy-Cons.

    Actually, I belive you all miss the point here. The charging grip is totally useless for anyone who gets the switch and wants to play in both portable and home mode, since as stated, the charge for the joycons lasts 20 hours and you simply charge them by connecting them back to the switch itself. So, you play (even if it's 20 hours), plug them back in and you're done. BUT what happens if you buy an extra set of joycons? You can't plug more than 2 joycons ont he console (of course) so that's where the charging grips come into play. You connect the charging grip to the dock, with the extra joycons attached and... voilà. You're chaging 4 joycons at once.

      I think people are forgetting that you don't just play a game for 20 hours. That 20 hour battery life is put to the test when you don't always plug the joy cons onto the system. You can only play the Switch while it is docked if the joy cons are charged, and the only way to charge them is to put them onto the Switch where they are useless when the system is docked.

    • @BillTrinensTongue
      @BillTrinensTongue 7 років тому +6

      I might question your opinion.
      If you manage to continually repeat this simple procedure: play, stop playing and leave joycons docked. play, stop playing and leave joycons docked. play, stop playing and leave joycons docked you will never have this problem.
      I know it might sound like an impossible task to you. But I can assure you this is doable! If you're an adult and have responsibilities, like...anything in your life besides gaming...you will never have problems.
      On the other hand, you can check...things like...battery life. Like wiimotes. These probably have light indicators or onscreen.
      Charlie dear...2 options: you like to complain or you're not too bright (in some cases, it could be both). All devices are "stupid and useless" until normal people (not even clever people) start using them properly.

      Yeah, I figured that was a good use for it after thinking about it. Might pick it up if my friends don't like the tiny Joy-Cons and want a larger Controller. Though I doubt I'll do that with the Pro Controller around. Also, there is a separate charger for Joy-Cons that can charge 4 at a time, coupled with the dock charger that comes with the system and you get 6 Joy-Cons charging nicely. Drawback is that you can't use it while playing like the Grip.www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Joy-Con-Charging-Dock/dp/B01MR6JD1M

    I like the charging grip. It makes sense to me because we bought a second set of joy-cons. This gives us a second grip for playing two-player games that require a joy-con pair per player, and we can also charge all 4 joy-cons instead of having to swap em out (in case we want to play 4-player games). At 20 hrs play time I doubt we'll need to play while charging.

      Exactly, the litium ion batteries and the poly one are meant to be charged every time. In fact the life of a battery will be better if you have your battery usually charged at 80-100%. I suppose when the battery is fully charged and it's connected to the dock it will be a secondary circuit to not damage the battery.

    I think the main idea of the Joy-Con charging grip is just to charge those extra Joy-cons that you might buy besides the ones coming with the Switch (for instance to have 4 player Mario Kart locally or 2 player ARMS with motion control). The ones that come with the console charge on the Switch while the extra ones charge on the grip. It makes sense to me. So you can charge 4 joy-cons simultaneously. But I have to say that I find them a bit overpriced

      @@beerussama5338 I disagree. It is a good idea. If you own a second pair of joy-cons and have a big session of 4 player Mario party or something like that, you will want to re-charge all 4 joy-cons when you stop playing. That's when you'll want something like this, or the joy-con charging dock. I think this item is better because you can at least use the joy-cons as a controller while charging, unlike the dock.

  • @xile6
    @xile6 7 років тому +1

    This is the way i see it. If you play your system as a normal home system. Where you have your joycon mounted to a grip at all times.
    Then your joycons can go die in some days (20hr = 2.8est hours a day)
    So if your playing all week and at the end of the week your joycons dies. So now how are you to keep playing?
    You cant play while its in handheld mode. The joycons will not charge.
    That is where this grip comes in hand. You simple plug it up and charge while playing. Then onces your done playing just keep it plug up and it will charge over night.
    Thats the main reason i got mines.
    When do you charge your ps4 or xbox 1 controller? If your battery dies mid game you gotta break out a cable and hook it up.
    Same goes for the switch.

  • @5Bigfoots
    @5Bigfoots 6 років тому

    One scenario that you didn't consider (that happens to me) is when a person is playing a while on the TV, the controllers are drained and then you have to head out somewhere and you want to take your switch with you. When playing Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, you want to have all the battery life you can get, so having low batteries on the joy cons when you're heading out isn't good.
    There are three ways to solve this issue:
    1. Have the joy cons charging while you play
    2. Have a pro controller exclusively for TV gaming and Joy Cons for portable.
    3. Have two sets of joy cons. Have one charging while using the other to play.
    I go with option three, because I can have different color joy cons to switch it up and it works as four controllers to play four players, which is great when playing games like Mario Kart with a group of friends, family, or at some Nintendo event.
    Also, if you have two sets of Joy Cons, it's also a good idea to have two grips for when playing split screen with one other person. It makes it like playing using regular controllers.
    You also didn't mention that you can also charge from an outlet using a USB charger, not just by connecting it to the console. Which means you can also do option two by using one set of joy cons exclusively for TV and the other for portable, while being able to play four player when needed. If you have the charging grip you can leave one set charging at home.
    Of course I realize option three is the most expensive of the three, especially if you want to add a charging grip; but, for me it gives me the most flexibility. I don't really feel a need for a Pro Controller when I have the grip. It's nice, but the grip is more than enough for me.

    If you are playing on the TV and the joy cons batteries die you are stuffed. You will have to wait 3 and a half hours for the batteries to charge or stop playing on the TV and use the Switch screen. Not having to keep disassembling the Joy con grip and sliding them on to the switch every day will also save wear and tear and time. It makes perfect sense for those who will primarily use it as a home console

    The only problem would be if, say you played on your Switch in handheld mode for the last 4 hours, and the Joycons were almost flat as well, you'd plug your Switch in the base to charge it up but you would have no way to charge the Joycons themselves. But they charge while plugged in the Switch itself even in handheld mode, so if they charge fast enough (and it seems they do) the event of both Switch and Joycons being flat is almost impossible.

    If it had a battery in it, it would be ideal. You could leave it plugged into the dock while you're out, get home, attach joycons to the grip and continue to play while they charge.
    I think they also missed a selling point by not letting it do data over cable if plugged into the dock. Sure, I can just plug it into a powerboard near my couch, but for a house with poor signal reception from the couch to the switch, a data over cable could make it worth the $30.

    because I am going to own multiple joycons (I'm a huge fan of having 4 to 8 people playing on the same system) I think the purchase of a charge grip is warranted a bit more, especially if I can't get my hands on the sold out joycon charge station. It's pretty essential for me to be able to charge more than one set of joycons, at least with the way I game with friends.

    Weird. I plug in my PS4 controller every night... just like I plug in my phone, tablet, bluetooth headsets, etc. I was playing Zelda the other night on TV mode. When it was time to go to bed, I stood up, slide the joycons back onto the Switch. no biggie. It actually takes less time than plugging in my other stuff, because I don't have to reach for the cord and try to pull it up through the nests of other cords on my entertainment center.

    I got a outlet right next to my couch, so I bought a second AC adapter (for when I want to bring one without the dock, and don't want to repeatedly have to go through the hassle of unplugging it behind the TV bench and the dock) and a Charging Grip. No regrets. Quality of life thing.
    I also found the dog ear controller very comfortable after a while. Picking up a traditional controller last night felt really clunky and weird. It felt needlessly enormous. Still, I'll likely pick up a Pro Controller at some point too. For fighting games I guess. AC adapter can be used to charge that by the couch too 🙂

    I have to beg the differ.... I have a launch day switch and only play my switch docked as a console.
    Here in the last 2 weeks or so, my left blue joycon does not like to charge when attached to the switch in the dock, out of the dock it charges fine. This does not have to be plugged in the dock, it can be plugged into the wall with a block. This seems like the only viable option for people in my situation who doesn't have the funds to directly buy a pro controller which by the way is roughly 1/3 of the price of a switch. Also I hate having to unhook my joycons from the grip to hook them up to the dock just to charge them. Your points are valid though!

    The reason i'm buying the grip is because the pro controller has issues with the d-pad and from the reviews I've read on Amazon, people are saying that the warranty is short and the joystick is guaranteed to have issues over time. I'd rather wait for a controller that's worth buying in that case and have the charging grip in case for some reason the battery dies cause I didn't charge it (happened to me once and I wanted to play but had to charge instead but didn't want to play handheld mode).

    The charging grip would be useful to charge Joy-Con controllers if you have more than two. It's still possible to just use the Switch itself, seeing the lifetime and charging time, but constantly *switching* the Joy-Con might get annoying.
    I previously thought that the grip had a battery, because "Charging grip" is translated to "Chargeable Joy-Con holder" in Dutch. I think this is a mistranslation, because nowhere else is said that this has a battery of its own.

  • @TwilightWolf032

    Let's say you have a brother, or girl/boyfriend that plays Switch with you. You have two pairs of Joy-Cons. You can charge one pair by putting it into the Switch itself, but the other one will eventually run out of battery, granted you're not exchanging them all the time. This accessory would guarantee two or more people could use the Joy-Cons without the need to stop and let them charge on the console itself, especially if there is another pair attached to it already!
    Is the charger grip worth it? Depends on how you play, how much you play, with whom you play and how many!

Then while playing with your controller with the normal non charging grip you can have the spare joy cons charging. Then when they die you simoply switch. Or if a friend comes over you unplug it and have two controllers ready to go. I plan to buy it with my 2nd set of joy cons.

  • @Millionaire2K
    @Millionaire2K 7 років тому

    I think it serves a purpose. The original Joycons that come with the system can charge and live on the system. So the grip that came with the system does not need to be a charge grip. However if you buy a 2nd or 3rd or even 4th set of joycons you will need a place to store/charge them. This is Nintendo's solution. You can keep extra Joy-Cons on their own charge grip and charge and use like a normal controller.
    Of course there is a 3rd party charge station that can store the controllers and charge them, but you would still need a grip for them if you wanted to use with a grip.
    So based on 2 extra Joy-con sets, these r the options as of now.
    $60 for 2 3rd party grips and 1 charge station.
    $70 for 2 Nintendo non charge grips and 3rd party charger.
    $60 for 2 Nintendo charge grips.

    I agree with yall that the joycon charging grip isn't necessary because most people aren't going to play with the joycons so much that the battery is depleted. Also I'm pretty sure if the battery does get low somehow, there's going to be a message that pops up to warn you so you can know to plug it back in to the sides of the switch. If you have a pro controller which I assume most people would, then you don't need it. However, like was said in the vid, if you don't have a pro controller, and you want uninterrupted play, then it might be slightly necessary. But seriously, all you have to do is remember to put them back on the switch every time you're done playing. Plus, imo what Nintendo should've done is instead of including a regular grip, they should've put the charging grip in because having both just seems like too much. Sure people would've still bought the pro controller but when the battery on the joycons die, they could just plug them in to the grip, and charge them on an outlet or battery pack on the side if they don't feel like going all the way to their tv to put them back on the switch.

    I don't understand why it should be for a second pair of joy-cons only?
    I play mainly in docked mode, and if the joy-cons run out of battery, I can't continue playing docked mode, unless I have a charging grip... I'd have to pause my game and wait 3,5 hours until they're charged again. The dock is not built for charging, and will charge the console and joy-cons much slower.

    Aw man. This review was done from the perspective of a local solo player. I was considering picking up this charging grip to give my home console friends some comfort while providing myself with an extra charging place for my extra pair of joy cons. I don't know if this is 100% accurate but I heard somewhere that when the console is undocked and you're playing in handheld mode your joycons won't charge, the console has to be plugged in for them to charge. So just playing it in handheld will also run down the joycons battery.

    Was this mentioned?
    Even if you only use the Switch as a portable console, the system's battery itself will run out long before the joycon's do (3-6 hrs versus 20hrs). If you plug in the Switch to a power source, as long as the joycon's are attached to it (either via the dock or some external USB-C cable), it should charge the joycons as well.
    The main issue likely comes when you have multiple joycons, in that scenario, having joycons not attached / used regularly could prevent them from being charged, but if you're doing that, it may be better to get the specific joycon charger (charges two sets at a time, I think?)
