Joycon Skins vs Shell Swaps: Which is right for you?

  • In this video I try out some dbrand skins for my switch joycons, and go over the pros and cons to both shell swapping and wrapping your joycons with skins!
This is a follow-up piece to my very first video, where I went through the process of switching (ha) my joycons into new shells, and made a custom pair of lavender joycons. Which ones do you prefer?

I've gotten near complete coverage from Stickybunny. Only parts left uncovered on the joycon is the side where the SL/SR buttons are (the part that clicks into the switch). I've only ever gotten matte skins (rather than glossy) from them, and the skins have a wide variety including base colors and fancy prints. They also have options for just joycons, pro controllers, or the entire switch and dock as well as bundles for all of the above. I've had people ask if i swapped my shells for some custom print shells (my entire switch is a pastel galaxy design).

Cassidy McCabe This is fantastic! I looked at stickybunny and looking at the pictures I assumed they didn’t cover everything but this is great! Thank you so much for letting us know! Hope it’s okay if I pin this 🤗🤗

@@DammitJeff sure! It definitely took me a while to purchase one too, their preview photos don't do the final results justice, and with all these companies claiming "full coverage" and still having half the controller exposed it's hard to tell. I had to dig for a review on youtube and when I found it covered the whole thing I went and bought it!
You do have to take a lot of time with it, to cover my whole switch took probably close to an hour, using a hair dryer to buff out the rounded edges and stretch over the entire thing. theres still a couple of bends on the controllers where I got impatient, so I'm actually going to buy a new skin for the joy cons with my next paycheck lol

Yes!!! I just applied my Sticky Bunny skins onto my joy-cons and I love them so much. Just like Cassidy said, they cover the entire joy-con and come in an insane amount of colors and designs. I chose to go with the mix-and-match option and got pastel green, baby blue, pastel orange, and pastel yellow. Application did take awhile, but after you do the first one you kind of get the hang of it. Cannot recommend their skins enough!! (I even took the entire skin off at one point bc it was just a bit off and reapplied it again no problem)

I got mine from unichameleon (also on Etsy) they seem to be from the same manufacturer as they have a lot of the same prints and I assume the same amount of nearly full coverage (though I think uni has more/ better options) including an animal crossing print that looks almost identical to the animal crossing edition switch. Uni also seems to be a little bit cheaper and offers a little more customization. I was able to order my print in the joycons and switch cover. I considered getting the dock as well but I intend to get a dock sock eventually in a different print. Not saying one is better than the other or anything, just wanted to let anyone looking for skins know of another source to check. I just wish Nintendo offered more customization options in the first place :(

I actually did it about 2 weeks ago and honestly it´s really easy! I used the ExtremeRate shells and it tooke me about 3 hours to change both joy cons and the back of my switch. I had no experience with modding and stuff like that but everthing still works perfectly and it´s worth it, it looks really nice!

    • @NyaMoon_
      @NyaMoon_ 4 роки тому +10

Generic TM I used the screwdrivers that came with the shell, some tweezers and a plate Werte I put all the screws. Apparently ExtremeRate changed their screwdrivers, they aren’t the best but they work if your are careful. Some screws might be really hard to get out (I had problems on the back of my switch) but after some trying I got them out! If they’re still not coming out use a rubber band, that makes it easer :) I followed the tutorial from JerryRigEverything but there are a ton of tutorials online. You just need time, patience, you need to be careful and good arranging of the screws.

I will always love shells over skins. When I did my first shell swap for joy cons, I did rip a ribbon cable so I was forced to buy a new joy con. But that helped me learn and I used that knowledge for future shell replacements, haven't damaged any joy con since. I tried skins once but they just didn't feel right. Like compared to the bare joy con smoothness, the glossy feel of the skins just felt very odd. My first shell replacement took me 4 hours to do, after that only took about 45 min per side. Honestly, once you do a shell replacement, you feel a big sense of accomplishment. Plus every replacement shell I've used feels just like the official shells. My personal favorite combo is white joy cons with SNES color buttons (yellow, blue, green, red). So far I've done about 8 shell replacements and only 1 skin. I'll take shells over skins any day!

also i 100% agree to how fun taking things apart is, i remember when i was somewhat younger i started swapping the buttons and shell parts between my different wiimotes and it was what got me into that bc it was just so interesting to uncover every bit of the thing i used to play games every day

I got a second-hand switch from a friend and it was the gray one. I love taking things apart and definitely wanted a custom look, so I got extremerate's classic SNES EU shells and back(the multi-colored button one) - thing looks so good now. They even include a screwdriver and replacement screws and springs which is a nice touch!

Oh lol I watched your shell swap video and then just searched skins and it was yours again. I don't have a Switch right now (waiting for that restock) but I'd definitely go with the skins. I plan to get the gray console, so even if some parts aren't all covered, at least it should go alright with the gray. I really want that lavender joy cons. It looks so nice!

You really don’t need a lot of tools for shell swap, I just painted my joycons which took a few days to paint but taking them apart and putting it back together took like just over an hour total(excluding painting). All you really need is a triwing screwdriver and a tiny philips and maybe a magnet. Great video!

I just replaced my shells for my switch to Sakura pink with white buttons. I’m absolutely in love. I’m a total beginner so the task was daunting at first. I finished around 5 hours but there was a lot of trial and error when it came to the right joy con. Make sure to always check if your buttons can click because it’s a nuisance to unscrew everything to make sure it clicks again. I chose shells over skins because of how it covers everything and of how durable it is. In the end the payoff was worth it!

Just got done installing skins on my switch, joy cons, joy con straps, joy con grip and dock. All of them together plus shipping was only $22. It wasn’t hard and it looks great 👍. Also, the skins for the joy cons wrapped around and covered the whole Joycon. I ordered them off Etsy and they arrived in a timely manner. They also have hella colors and prints and styles. Highly suggest looking into it.

I'm waaay to inexperienced to try a full joycon shell replacement, plus I love my current colours of my animal crossing joycons so I opted to try a skin for my Turquoise switch lite. It's a pretty marbled blue Turquoise and gold look with a glitter finish and I'm sooo excited and a bit nervous to apply it. I've been watching all the application vids I can find to prep. Very excited to try though. Thanks sooo much for all your amazing vids. XD

I have the shells and lemme tell you real quick about my story lol I bought the shells (extreme rate) last year in August to treat myself, but once I received it I suddenly chickened out and held off on changing my joy cons. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I've changed them and I'm in love! As you mentioned the texture isn't cheap plastic, it's quite soft and comfortable which thank goodness because had it been plastic I wouldn't have been able to return them. Also I agree with your comment on the tools. Although they give you tools in the kit, they weren't great in quality and were stripping the screws on the outside of the joy cons. I was legit sweating and freaking out thinking that I'd fuck the screws all up. My brother filed down the screwdriver and helped with those 8 screws- but everything else forward was easy. (I did find myself leaving out some screws so I had to go back and put them back in lol). If you have 20-ish bucks to spare and want new joy cons I really recommend the shells!

Great video, I literally did a shell swap this weekend using the extremerate matte black shells, the middle battery tray seemed decent quality, It was my first time doing anything like this and I was super nervous as I'd only had the console 24 hours at this point, I did mess up and while I was taking off the LZ trigger (again as a spring escaped first time) I accidentally broke the button off but got a replacement component for £6 on Amazon and fixed it.

  • @RecordedMyth

I have actually done a full shell swap (joycons and back panel) and once I got passed the outside screws, the swap was pretty easy (save for replugging THAT ribbon cable) if a bit time consuming. And since I got my shells from Extreme, they came with extra screws and spring that I replaced the old ones with so if I want to swap again in the future it's actually going to be a lot easier.

the best thing to do if you're into customizing (imo) is buying the gray/black switch, and buying skins from stickybunny (on etsy and ig). the skins cover most of the switch, except for the front buttons and around the joysticks. and if its black it just looks a lot better. also getting a clear case to protect the skin is nessisary, plus it helps the skin look sleeker. so yeah.

  • @jakelin981
    @jakelin981 3 роки тому

Dreamy Craft Shop shows how they do it and Sticky Bunny has a lot of variety when it comes to covering all sides of the controllers and even the whole switch can be decorated by the skins they use, they also have things to have the buttons be a different color or design as well as the thumb grips. There all skins and they show how to fix the curves

Colour still fully present an awesome soft touch feeling and it looks sick! I advise a shell replacement if you want quality and durability.

I haven't used either, but I've put a skin on my hardcover case for my switch lite, and I ended up taking it off almost immediately. I prefer the smooth, finished feel of a flat cover, rather than the sticker skin that didn't fit quite right. Based on this, I'd probably go for a shell swap for joycons over skins.

Personally i have shell swaped a pro controller and it was definitely worth it! Compared to a skin the shell looked so much better and had no uneven ends. The one thing though is that i am scared to shell swap a pair of joy cons as they have a lot more tiny bits, but i have opened them in the past to replace joysticks so idk how much more difficult a shell swap would be at that point. Also shell's can definitely be more customizable, if i bought a white shell i could paint it and see how it looks, painting on a controller has a big issue that if something goes wrong you could screw up the controller or have to buy new shells if your lucky.

A silicone tool for doing things like nail powder is a great tool for smoothing the skin down, and most come with a wedge shape and a cone shape, great for getting little places just right.
My vision isn't as good as it once was, and doing the shells is a lot harder now than it was 20 years ago for me. I would love to grab a lot of cheap broken joycons and fix them and reshell them, but I just don't have the ability anymore. But I've had skins before for my Game boy and NES controller, and they didn't look great after a year, plus the reports of skins ruining the Switch paint, I am just going to wait until Nintendo eventually makes the color I want.

What I'm doing is getting a plastic cover for the Switch and controls and putting a skin on that. That way the £40 skin last year's and you can constantly change your case to your desire. That way you get a pretty shell that means you don't need to disconnect everything and you can get a personalised look. On top of that, it doesn't have the same drawbacks as putting it directly on to the console

Inside of a shell swap or skin I decided to buy the matching blue right joy con since my issue with the usual blue and red is that neon red. This way if I want to put a cute protective case on, the colours underneath will look alright and match on both sides. I only bought one controller so I didn't have pay full price for something I wouldn't use and I have an extra controller which is nice. Overall I'm satisfied.

shells are honestly so incredible, but if you're not familiar with electronics they can be a pain in the butt and as you said you can very easily break your joycons that way. that being said, if you do prefer the look of shells over the skins, there are LOTS of people online who make custom joycons so you don't have to worry about breaking yours, especially if you only have the one pair. the customs usually cost around 120 dollars which is a bit pricey, but the look is SO worth it in the end!

I prefer shell swapping because you’re likely to mess up while applying a skin and the end result will kinda look ugly. Shells will guarantee a good look on any Joy-Con but, you could break something in the process and it’s quite a hassle but it’s all worth it in the end.

  • @Danielsworlds

I did my first she'll swap just the other day and took me a little over an hour to do. Now keep in mind I have open my joycon before to replace the joysticks after my last one had started to drift. So I was more comfortable opening up my controller and had some experience doing so.
But the whole process was fairly painless as long as you have the right screwdrivers a spudger of some kind and a pair of tweezers you can knock it out in two or three hours if it's your first time and you're following a guide.
And I had previously used a vinyl skin from dbrand on my same joycon. But after about six months of you so the vinyl skins started to peel off and became very unattractive and unpleasant to hold and I pulled them off to save the trouble.

The scratches and “millimeter too big” are because they’re custom. I believe that means it’s painted so the paint will always be scratched at some point, and paint will make everything feel thicker by just enough for someone to notice.

option though.. the finish on my grey joycons is horrible, i always wash my hands but they have those “oil stains” from me just using them too much and rubbing away the finish. some skins will easily fix that :-)
