They are good for families with younger kids whose controllers are not always going to be taken care of and charged. My family and friends have been playing a lot of Mario Party recently, and because we have a lot of controllers everywhere, some of them are not as charged and run out of battery quicker. Seeing that it is hard if not impossible to charge one Joy-Con while playing a game like Mario Party, this allows you to continue without any issues. The JoyCons work great if you like me have hand/shoulder arthritis. I think the battery pack would make them heavy enough to aggravate the arthritis pain more. The JoyCons have allowed me to play games again in spite of the arthritis - they are light and I can hold them far enough apart to minimize the pain.
Buy some plastic grips. They don't add any weight, but they do add a contour to make it more ergonomic. You can buy a pack of 2 pairs for like $10-$15. With our limited amount of outlets, we only have one of our switches plugged in at a time, which then means only 2 joycons are charged at a time while the rest deplete in battery in the days in-between playing. I bought these Grips about two months ago when this video came out but didn't see this video until now and I have to agree with Scott's assessment. I love using these for games like Skyward Sword, but I kind of forget they're there. I'm interested to try them out for all games that don't need motion controls also try them out for single Joy-Con use. It's funny that the intended purpose of these would be more for something like the DualSense Edge (the battery is terrible for those), but with the Joy-Con, the best purpose is just adding some weight to your controller where it doesn't feel like you're playing with feathers. I would be very interested in Scott making a video on the different colored Joy-Con Straps, since he briefly touched on them in reference to the yellow Joy-Con. Unlike these, those can only be bought for cosmetic reasons, considering all Joy-Con come with them. Knowing Scott, though, he may already have a video on those Straps.
I love this, because I bought this years ago, and it was entirely for bulkier joycons. I didn't care at all about the batteries. I used them for exactly what you said they should've been advertised as.
A friend got me these when I first got my Switch in 2018, and I have to say.. Having not been a huge Nintendo fan at the time (I didn't watch any of the videos hyping up the Switch, or see anything about it's specs.) I was super excited because I thought I'd be playing with the Joy Cons off more often than I do, and I didn't know the battery lasted *that* long on each one. So now the main purpose for them is just making the Joy Cons feel better to hold. The added weight is great as well, it makes you feel like you're actually holding something of substance. Also, sometimes trying to take off the battery cover is a god damn nightmare.
These really make the joycons more comfortable to hold. About the width of a wiimote. Really great for Arms and then again with Skyward Sword. And MUCH MUCH better design in terms of taking them on and off vs the normal joycon wrist straps! I really like them a lot!
Tbh I kinda get the idea to make them battery packs, cuz like, why not? We've got this thick hunk of plastic that 2 AAs *would* fit in, so let's put 'em in! I think this will be helpful in like 20 years when lithium batteries for joycons will be hard to find and you end up stuck with joycons that last like 5 minutes due to battery degradation
Funny because giving a way to extend the life of an internal battery controller is great for the long term, specially for expensive controllers like the joycons, but the joycons are probably the last controller that would need this, considering once the batteries in them fully die, you can just play it exclusively on handheld mode or use the charging grip
its sorta interesting how beyond just the use for ARMS, its clearly an accessory for a holdover between two ages; we were still going from using AA batteries in gaming to all integrated rechargeable batteries
Yeah, I agree with the assessment, these look wildly comfortable. I'm surprised they didn't include a piece of plastic like this but without the battery functionality as extra grip for the joycons, or maybe built into the straps if you're gonna use them detached anyway.
I ordered some 3d printed single grips of our etsy for the joycons to make them more ergonomic -- they have finger groves and make it much easier to hold, it's a stressful hand position sans something like the single grips for some repetitive stress injuries. The joycons being separate is actual useful for being able to sit in ways that can be better for the body -- like split keyboards. I'd make more sense to have something re-chargable with more ergonomic fit then these
I bought those mainly for better grips when playing with the joycons like Wii remotes. Didn't have to use the batteries. It's not Wii remote levels of comfortable, but it's better than holding the flat joycons themselves.
I never had Arms but I got these cheap at gamestop. I used these to comfortably play Skyward Sword. Never put in batteries so I guess I haven't used them as intended but they add the perfect amount of weight and girth to the joy con and are superior to the standard strap.
I think they actually wanted these to be just grips for the controller but thought it was just too little, that people would question why weren't those shipped by default with the system anyways, so they tacked on the charging function with single use batteries instead of the better solution which would be rechargeable batteries on the grips.
This is the content I follow Scott's second channel for. I want him to tell me about a random Nintendo thing, but I *need* him to spend a good 7-10 minutes to tell me about it.
As the switch gets older and joycon internal batteries start to lose charge capacity these will become more useful. Being able to use them remote using a battery format that's not proprietary will help
I thought you were going to talk about lithium batteries dying and having an option of AA Batteries was better for the distant future, but idk if without the lithium battery this accesory will make the joy-cons work or not.
@@themailman3331 you probably already know this, but just in case you didn't, note that Energizer lithiums are non rechargeable. They have lithium in the name, but they are made using chemistry that goes only one way.
As a Nintendo fanatic I gotta say the joycons are definitely the most uncomfortable controller in gaming history. Even worse than those Chinese bootleg consoles. Because I have such a gentle grip I've always talked about no matter how much I play I've never had a problem with carpal tunnel...then Tears Of The Kingdom released. And that was the end of that.
As a person who owns a pair of these, they do seem “extra”, but I mainly use them as portable chargers when on the go, sometimes you are out of town, and want to play a game with your spouse on a hotel tv or what have you, and the extra controllers are dead… well, these come in clutch for those moments.
This unironically made me want these actually. I love the freedom of playing with split Joycons and them being so tiny is one of the biggest drawbacks. My biggest issue is the small buttons, but I feel like I wouldn't mind as much if they were easier to hold with these anyway
Right? I used an 8bitdo controller for a long time, but used joycons once to try out the motion controls on Skyrim. Way more comfortable having more freedom to adjust my posture with the split joycons. Then my joycons started having issues connecting and charging while docked, so these grips solved a battery problem for me.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s hands fall asleep when playing the Switch (specifically handheld, as I use the prcon extension thing when playing docked)
This is actually a great accessory my problem with it is having to use AA batteries but I get it’s purpose lol and my biggest gripe is when the strap breaks I have to buy another one 😭
I think the bigger reason for the battery grip was to give the joycons a larger grip, to make them more comfortable to hold. I think the batteries were just meant to be a sort of bonus thing.
I recently got Just Dance for my switch and every time I played, I wished I could use my old Wiimote because of how difficult it is to grip the tiny joy con without accidentally pressing buttons that cause the game to pause in the middle of a song. I need to track down a set of these.
i'm sure that somewhere way up the line somewhere, these WERE made specifically because someone said "hey, this grip you want for Arms sucks, what can we do about that?" and then everything got lost in corporate nonsense
This feels like it’s for people who have more than one pair of joy cons, whether you like a specific pair to stay on display with the switch, or just want to use joy-cons that aren’t currently charged. Plus. It’s a cool alternative to a charging stand, and you could store the controllers with any other controllers you have, and not worry about their charge.
This is a survivalists fever dream. We have 2 backups to our primary we need at least two more backups, one of those needs to leverage a hand crank so it can never fail even after the apocalypse
On the topic of bad items: Mario Kart 8's wheel. The Wii one felt great, the controllers' fine-tuned gyros made for a very immersive driving experience. The Switch wheel hurts to use.
As a grown man, this accessory is one of the most useful if you're going to use the joycons. With these, they will actually fit in your hand without feeling like you're holding a pencil.
I like them. The switch is too big to just throw in my bag with the joycons attached, so I use it in tabletop mode exclusively with the joycons dangling around. So the joycons are always empty. Pop in some fresh batteries, remove them before I stop playing (they *will* discharge in my bag), and... oh wait, I play the 3ds almost exclusively now
I use the.... joycon... controller... converter thing all the time. I can bring the plastic thing anywhere that I bring my switch, and set the switch screen on the table and play comfortably with the controller. The pro controller is also nice but it's a bit heavier and more cumbersome to carry around in my bag. I don't think there's a situation where I'd want a AA battery pack for my joycons. I'd much rather rechargable battery packs. Nobody is using AA batteries for their games controllers anymore.
I wouldn't mind these as the controllers need more weight for me. Even the plastic shell to work like a normal controller, I got one with a battery mostly for the slightly bigger size and more weight. The batteries themselves may also not be too bad if the built in ones are wearing out to get you some time or transition to Eneloops.
I got 5 minutes into the video and realized he's demonstrating these on carpet with makes me think he's on his belly with his feet wiggling in the air playing with his new toys lol.
The joycons on the grip controller is the only way I play certain games... Panel De Pon in particular because the D-pad on the pro controller hurts my thumbs with how hard I play.
The thing is, you have to look at it from a different perspective, these things add weight (witch is a very good thing for a boxing game) and make the Joycons way better to grip. These add weight and improve the grip first, the batteries are just a nice addon because they could have just put weights in them, now the weight is batteries, win win
I have these and use them without batteries in them for games designed around the Wii Remote like Pikmin 3 and Mario Galaxy, so much more comfortable than just using the Joy Cons on their own...though I'd personally love if Nintendo released something more substantial, like a split pro controller or something along those lines as a nicer motion controller.

I think they actually wanted these to be just grips for the controller but thought it was just too little, that people would question why weren't those shipped by default with the system anyways, so they tacked on the charging function with single use batteries instead of the better solution which would be rechargeable batteries on the grips.
For me, I work out on the treadmill and play games while doing it with a joycon in each hand. They are perfect for that.
Me and my family would have died if it wasn’t for our friendly neighbourhood joy-con AA battery pack
?
The ergonomics improvement is what caught my eye 👁️ when I first saw these.❤
“Finally, a video game accessorie I can relate to, one that lacks purpose “
- Scott Wozniak (2023)
I actually really like them, they make the joy cons heftier and more comfortable to hold without a grip, and I prefer them to a grip.
These are useful, but not because of the batteries. I just really like how they add more mass and volume to the joy-cons.
That's basically what Scott said in the video lol
@@RunstarHomer - Oh shit, is that Scott the Woz?
Loving all these scott’s stash episodes
I actually like the Joy Con charging grip. I've never gotten a pro controller so having the grip I charge it in I do use when docked.
This really feels like a 1-0.9 adaptation of a This Old Tony video focusing on video games, instead of mechanical machining
Loving all these episodes
I might actually pick up a pair. The extra mass and weight would be nice. How long will 2 AA batteries last though?
@@rockapartie I have a 4 pack of Energizer Lithium, seems perfect.
Scott was so pissed off about a switch accessory that he had had to make a video about it lol
Just buy a joycon cover
4:40 my family has dubbed the joycons "The dorito" because of this. XD
I played BotW, Odyssey, 3D-Allstars, and a bunch of others with individual joycons. Those do look like they'd have made that comfier.
@Folurby Scott the Woz?
They are actually pretty useful if you enjoy playing Splatoon with split joycons, both for grip and for battery life.
I think the bigger reason for the battery grip was to give the joycons a larger grip, to make them more comfortable to hold. I think the batteries were just meant to be a sort of bonus thing.
Those work for really good grips if u wanna use the joycons by themselvees, but other than that u can already charge them
The beauty of an accessory that turns the Rechargeable joycon into a non-rechargable joycon.
Handy durable and most importantly 20 hours backup, Awesome!!
Bro really rubbed the batter back on the battery grip pretending to fumble with it. Lmao...
And if you want to be redundant, you could get those usb charging AA batteries. 😂
Probably makes them a lil more solid when throwing
This is a survivalists fever dream. We have 2 backups to our primary we need at least two more backups, one of those needs to leverage a hand crank so it can never fail even after the apocalypse
On the topic of bad items: Mario Kart 8's wheel.
The Wii one felt great, the controllers' fine-tuned gyros made for a very immersive driving experience. The Switch wheel hurts to use.
As a grown man, this accessory is one of the most useful if you're going to use the joycons. With these, they will actually fit in your hand without feeling like you're holding a pencil.
I have these because my joy cons kept dying while I was playing, they also make them a bit more comfortable to hold.
I like them. The switch is too big to just throw in my bag with the joycons attached, so I use it in tabletop mode exclusively with the joycons dangling around. So the joycons are always empty. Pop in some fresh batteries, remove them before I stop playing (they *will* discharge in my bag), and... oh wait, I play the 3ds almost exclusively now
I like the part when Scott said "Its battery packin time!" then he packed all of those guys
Nobody is using AA batteries for their games controllers anymore.
those battery packs will be useful once the joycon batteries start to fail
I love all these episodes
I just ordered these to use when playing Skyward Sword HD with motion controls. Todays video on Switch vs Wii did the trick. 🤷♀️
I did not know who Scott The Woz is and I thought this is the main channel. I can't explain how happy I was when I discovered I'm an idiot.
"It has a 🍑 now" my favorite line in history
I have these and use them without batteries in them for games designed around the Wii Remote like Pikmin 3 and Mario Galaxy, so much more comfortable than just using the Joy Cons on their own...though I'd personally love if Nintendo released something more substantial, like a split pro controller or something along those lines as a nicer motion controller.
