- The 80s were a wild time for outlandish spacecraft concepts. Here's my interpretation of Rockwell's air-launched SSTO rocketplane concept: Rockwell TAV, single stage to orbit rocketplane, launched from a pilot-less jet-powered flying sled!

Enjoy! What's your favourite outlandish 20th century spacecraft design?
The Mustard space shuttles (you should build that one), and Energia II (you should alsp do that one). Idk if you have a Discord server, cuz I could give you some references that may be hard to find.
Recoverable energia. The boosters had wings
The McDonnell Douglas DC-X is pretty cool
do the x33 next!
The Energia by the soviets

P sure he was going mach 1 on the deployment due to his 10km altitude and actually mach 3 in the way back lmao
In memory of Micheal Collins 1930-2021. We need to get to the Moon during the lifetime of the final Apollo 11 astronaut, Buzz Aldrin.
OH MY GOD HE'S STILL ALIVE!? dumbass google told me all three of them had died now
@@xenno8496 Oh yes - Buzz is still alive and as feisty as ever!
Agreed. Poor Micheal Collins. He was the mothership "commander", right? No-one deserves to die, especially hero's and legends. Death may be natural, but we cured Smallpox. Again: No-one deserves death. Except murderers.
@@johncarnett2668 agreed and yes he was the mothership commander

i’d like to say on behalf of most matt lowne watchers, thank you for providing us with entertainment during these tough times.
Can you not speak for all of us? Because we all want to say our own things. And while I agree that it is great to have Mr. Lowne making content in these trying times, I still have other things I want to say. And I think others may agree.
Most? 😂
*Matt finished For All Mankind and got inspiration from the show to make an air launched shuttle*
Pathfinder, you are go for launch
Pathfinder's launch and Pathfinder in general was pretty fracking epic.
Not only pathfinder, but also Apollo-Soyuz and Sea Dragon. Even then, I won’t lie, what a damn twist when the axis changes and it turns out Pathfinder is launched when airborne
"playing beatsaber and getting very depressed at my general lack of fitness" why did you have to come after me like that.
Fuck it. Keep playing what you like, no matter your weight. Unless your obese, because that can cause health problems. Get that checked out, if you are.
@Chicom 3 14:50
Hey, with the recent test of the Stratalaunch System, this could possibly be a reality in the coming future :P Also you should definitely include it in your Space This Week series, because even though it isn't exactly an aerospace vehicle, it is being designed to aid in the launching of space-faring vehicles!
Hmm, it's interesting to see what will become of Stratolaunch. Really hit a wall when its founder passed away, but I'm glad to see that new management are interested in keeping the project going, especially with the announcement that they're resurrecting their hypersonic rocketplane concept.
You should try recreating the Jamestown colony from For All Mankind:)
Sea dragon ✅
Jamestown ❓
I would love to see that. Maybe he could make a series of recreating all that stuff from All Mankind.
And if he does not make the expansion the video is not completed

Seriously, great video, and nice to see that you watch FAM too.
"old concepts, new life" would be a good title for this series
At 13:21, you described how to manipulate elevons for stability. That configuration is actually what is used in commercial airlines for controlling roll and pitch :)
its always a good day when matt lowne posts
OMG MATT LOWNE HEARTED MY COMMENT OMGGGGGGGGGG
True that.
Agreed
Pathfinder?
Not quite, the shuttle is different, and so is the plane. The way it works however, is similar
man the mod he used for the plumes look so nice
It's called Waterfall
@@GiulioVonKerman mainly it's real plume
Waterfall is just an aesthetic for the real plume
@@aniketsrivastava1870 no, waterfall is its own mod. You can uninstall RealPlume and it wouldn't make a difference. When waterfall supports SRBs RealPlume will be gone
@@vovical I just recently installed both mods in ckan at first it told me waterfall is a dependencies for restock which in turn is dependencies for real plume that's why I m saying this was forced to install all three mods
I agree it does look really cool
yes, i like this one
it lets me think of 'for all mankind' They did something like this in there
@J6F05 CHEUNG Hei-yeung Andy I mean the fact that they air-launch a shuttle isn’t really a plot point
@J6F05 CHEUNG Hei-yeung Andy no, no it’s not
@J6F05 CHEUNG Hei-yeung Andy So? That doesn’t sound like a major plot point
Nerva in For all Mankind: Brings Pathfinder to orbit with ease.
Nerv in Ksp: barely can get me in the air
There is a mod called Keep It Straight that remembers your camera modes so it doesn't change to auto all the time
Non PS4 videos are so good, I missed them so much! Thanks Matt, love the work, keep it up!
Great video matt. Keep up the good work!!

A little-known design that could be a good fit for this series is the NERO orbital rescue spaceplane. This was a 1962 concept by MIT, which stands for Near Earth Rescue & Operations and was meant to be a rapid-response craft to perform time-critical operations in orbit, fulfilling a similar role to a coast guard. The proposal is very detailed and contains full design schemes, mission profiles and other details. The NERO spaceplane itself was to be a two-man lifting body, strongly resembling an enlarged Northrop M2-F2, which was one of the experimental lifting-bodies being tested by NASA at the time. NERO had an integral jet engine to improve its range in atmosphere, and carried a small payload bay which could transfer critical supplies to spacecraft or stations, or be configured for passengers, in which case it could fit two rescued crewmen. Orbital manoeuvres were to be done with a small transfer stage, as the NERO itself had only the jet engine; this stage is very similar to the one planned for Boeing's X-20 Dyna-Soar. The launch platform for NERO was supposed to be a Titan III-C, which is a known quantity and should be quite reproducible in KSP. IRL, they chose Titan because it used storable fuels in its upper stages, allowing the Titan-Nero to be kept on the launch pad for up to two weeks at T-minus-3: this was the key to giving NERO the fast response times it needed. I think this would be a perfect fit for this series: it's a neat what-if whose intended role would make for an exciting video. For added excitement, you could put the spacecraft whose crew it must rescue into a fatal orbital trajectory, giving the rescue some real life-or-death stakes! Love the content, by the way, keep it up!

It’s a great representation of the shuttle/jet
Matt, the name of the show should be, "Spacecraft of Future's Past"
Oh my god, Matt! This is SO COOL! What a skilful hand you have, this is quite the build. Keep up the good work, mate! :)
stayed up for this :D looking forward to it as always
Love the vids. You got me into ksp and now I can not stop playing it. Thanks
I have been waiting for a mat vid!!
9:27 U SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND BABY RIGHT ROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What you should do next is the helicopter that would have caught the 1st stage of the Saturn 5. That would be difficult but cool to try
Next Video idea "PLZ MAKE RANGER FROM INTERSTRALLER " it looks cool! 🙏👍
Matt get ready for chapter 7 of Alyx, it’s the most amazing gaming experience I’ve ever had.
Also, I get it doesn’t help now, but Alyx does have a left handed mode too
12:06 That comes down to the center of pressure vs the center of mass. Center of pressure is where drag acts, and is not shown in the SPH. If it's in front of your center of mass, your plane will want to fly backwards at high speed but will behave normally at low speed.
This is seen in “for all man kind” on Apple TV
Early concepts for the Space Shuttle used RL-10 engines as OMS thrusters, so not entirely inaccurate.
Woohoo! New video!
I have learned so much about this game from you
This is interesting I’ve never heard of this design concept before but KSP is great at simulating stuff like this great job Matt
You can make a much more efficient launcher with rapiers. Makes for a really cool long range shuttle. Get the right number of rapiers and cruise to 1400m/s before decoupling
I would really like to see the pathfinder space shuttle from "For All Mankid" in ksp
Can't wait for the next one good job matt
Not sure why but I really liked that lander design. Alternative history builds are awesome btw Matt, love them! Like to see some alternative Soviet lander and NASA landers 😉
"keep trying, and you might succeed." thats the most realist advice ever XD
Hi Matt, love your videos ! I couldn't recommend you enough the FMRS mod for these type of launches. I know you don't like using gameplay-altering mods but it would make these videos much more convenient to record and also more immersive imo.
Can you make a movie and can you use the space shuttle please:) this is so good!
Matt: trying to use lots of different engines/parts
Sounds like a challenge: find a way to incorporate every single part into launches in one video!! Build a space station or a surface base, idk, but every part must be used
matt i was about to write a 8 paragrapher on how you’re one of the best content creators out there but i’m not bothered because I just spent 40 minutes coming up with a. fictional story for a fictional plane.
you should do one on the dyna-soar
That concept seems super super cool
Hey Matt I really liked your universal surface base. A good idea you could attempt is making a universal space station that could orbit any planet or moon (or even the Sun, even you already made one) and make it orbit Eloo or Moho. The video was great btw! Continue the hard work 👍
Next video you should recreate the path finder shuttle from for all man kind!
Atmospheric autopilot mod does excellent job making anything controllable.
Pretty sure that thing could also fly well with it,
I would actually love to see you play vr-chat and do fan meetings! I would always show up!
Hey Matt thanks for the vids. I finally built my first ssto after 1 month of struggling. Your videos really gave me good advice on how to build it and was the reason why I sussefull. Once again thx Matt😁
Matt should really do a modded ksp series. It would be quite fun
The AJ10 on the OMS of the shuttle is not monoprop, it burns hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide. It's hypergolic, like the Gemini craft and in-game analog of them being the Bobcat and Cheetah engines. So you were more faithful to the design than you thought.
11:40
Nononono
CoM in FRONT of the CoL is the way to get stable crafts. But a craft with a CoM near the front and CoL right behind the CoM makes for super maneuverable, very stable craft.
To deploy you have to have the shuttle at an angle in the shed preferably, and before deploying, you tilt the shed something like 10-15 degrees downward and you realease.
Half-Life Alyx has a one handed mode, one of the few games that actually supports it!
Matt Lowne: *makes things that NASA can't make*
SpaceX: Write that down!! Write that down!!!
They did a similar thing in "for all mankind". Great show.
Matt: "Don't fly this. Make another one. Plan better."
Me: "Fly this with no plan. Gotcha."
I make shuttle SSTOs without plans. Just design and go.
Those engine blooms look so good man
The concept drawing makes me think of the Zero-X from the movie Thunderbirds Are Go and the Century 21 comics.
The space shuttle used the aj10-190 engine as an oms engine which used monomethylhydrazine and dinitrogen tetroxide as a fuel. It was hypergolic and pressure-fed, but not monopropellant.
More planat coaster please!
Name for this category of videos: Paper rockets.
Hey Matt can you try the Restock visual mod? I really recommend it and it's compatible with all the other mods you installed
Reminds me to the Buran Shuttle where they used the An-225 for test flights
Great video
Space Shuttle did not use Monopropellant for it's OMS.
The Space Shuttle did use 2 components that would, when mixed, ignite without the need for a spark, so called hypergolic fuel.
Monopropellant is a single fluid that ignites when in contact with a catalyst but the catalyst remains and all the thrust comes from the Monopropellant.
Can you do a recreation of the pathfinder shuttle from For All Mankind? That thing is really cool and I think it would be really cool to see a Kerbal version.
ayo, that sled threw it bac doe
Matt "I can make as much changes as I want."
Me "Oh, Dear!"
What config are you using for Waterfall? The one I use doesn’t configure the jet engines
You should have done the Mun landing first, and return the lunar lander in the cargo bay.

- Finally Flying

Good to see you back again, Mr. Lowne! I like the idea of having a Space Shuttle, but it can carry heavy payloads into LEO. See you again soon!
That is perhaps the CHONKIEST space shuttle Ive ever seen in KSP
13:54 greatest advice ever
I've never felt more understood 17:30
It used hypergolic engines for circularization, which KSP LF/OX engines are, as they don't require anything to start.
what? you started playing VR games? awesome!
Since you have a VR headset you should try the KSP VR mod if you haven't already. I mean, it's janky and you can't use VR controllers to do anything, but you can look out spacestations, shuttles and planes :D
i left the windchime on the video announcement
Wow you are talented with building rockets keep it up 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Very cool video!
You needed the nose of the sled to pitch down at separation. If you can set the front control surfaces as spoilers in vanilla that might have done it.
Hey Matt, I challenge you to build one of the most well known space craft ever known... It has (To the extent of my knowledge which isn't that much) never been built in real life.
The Great, The Fast, The Famous.... X-Wing!!!!!!
Seeing this reminded me of the Apollo lander prototype in the book the "moon and its marvels"
It's a book that has basically no documentation online as of the posting of this comment.
I like how he still has raptor plumes
Matt, could you make that wonderful piece of British History that is the HOTOL (the predecessor of the SkyLowne) 😀
I swear the Soviets had a plan similar to this
That was the Buran
@@kathleencallaghan8913 no I'm talking about the Soviet plan to air launch a shuttle, although yes the Buran is similar to the space shuttle
The Soviets had a plan for everything!
New Title - Stuff that could've happened but didn't. Or - Pipe Dreams!
Thanks Matt! Here is some engagement to boost the videos standing within the UA-cam algorithm! ;-D
I know the free camera is better than the orbital camera, but it can be useful when docking and seeing if you accidentally burned too much in retrograde.
Mamamia matt lowne could u make the
Upcoming chinese spoce sta tion.
Spoce
I always try to build my Space Shuttles in a very specific way, to make sure statoc stability doesn't change after getting rid of cargo. It is farely easy when you build Space Shuttles out of monopropellant engines.
Matt: Doesn't build pathfinder
YOU HAD ONE JOB!
It's like Pathfinder from For All Mankind
