Spray Painting Mistakes, Myths & Misconceptions Part Deux
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 жов 2016
- I thought I would put together a quick video about some common mistakes and questions I get all the time about spray painting.
Hope you like it.
Thanks
Give a man a can of paint and he'll paint for a day, teach him how to paint and he'll paint everything he owns.....excellent!
Heavens to Murgatroyd Well said! Thanks for the chuckle!
as a qualified Spray Painter... I well and truely approve of this video! great video mate. I have shared this with my friends so they can have a better understanding of my profession! 10/10 for explanation 🖒🖒🖒
TheEsanel thanks mate. Appreciate the comment.
What is a qualified spray painter!!? As a custom bike painter I would not paint my toiler seat with anything that comes in a spray can. Spray can paints are junk - PERIOD. There are no reducers or activators added at the time of application and therefore you know what is in there is junk. If there was any doubt - try spray high grade automotive paint from a properly atomizing gun and see what happens to the spray can goo. Instantly dissolves it. The spray can junk doesn't perform well at all and if it looks the same as it did a year after applied its a miracle. 3 years later you want to shoot yourself because now you have to strip that crap off since you cannot paint on top of it. Way to go to save a buck. Even a harbor freight paint gun atomizes infinitely better than any can. And thankfully you can now apply 2 stage and 3 stage proper paints not to mention 2K filler primers etc.. There's a reason proper paint costs money. Most of them have lifetime warranties and there's absolutely no way no how ever you will get spay paint to look anything like the general ball park of a good automotive painter and I can prove that all day long. Its night and day.. crystal clear glass finish clear coat or even matte finishes don't come from spray cans.. ever. They take a boat load of talent experience and the requisite quantities of high grade acrylic enamels.
@@chrisstratton3430 Well I am using engine spray in a can on my wheels.
Chris Stratton Wow. Bad day? These videos don’t claim that spray cans and spray guns yield the same results.
I’m not sure if it was in this video or in Part 1, but he does make the point that he feels spray guns are the way do go and are his first choice.
He also makes the point that if you’re planning to paint something large (like a car) that you can buy an inexpensive gun, compressor and paint for about the same amount as you’d pay for all the cans of paint you’ll need. In that case, he says, go with the gun.
The target audience for these videos aren’t professionals like yourself. You guys already know how to paint with good results. CSM’s videos show lay people like me how to sand, prep and spray correctly for a good result. They’re very helpful for guys like me.
Those are literally all the issues I had with spray paints. Thank you mr. Knowitall 👍
I've been watching your videos for two hours now straight I'm interested beyond belief. These are some of the most information filled videos on the web
Man, this is the most helpful video I found in youtube about paint job mistakes. No one explained it that simple. Thank you so much
Surfing around UA-cam, I watched these a couple years ago and they were great! I’m glad I subscribed right away. Some of the tips stuck in my head, some didn’t. I’m getting ready to do some touch up painting on my ‘85 BMW 318i , so I came back and watched part 1 and deux again. Great tips! Thanks for putting out these vids. Very helpful. Cheers from Florida, USA
Top man no nonsense useful info really good mate keep it up u tha man great stuff. N no ADS!!! Awesome
I just started to paint my 790 and i love your videos man you look pasionate about what you do and make it compeling to try. Thank you!
Awesome man, huge help, I really appreciate the tips👊🏾 I feel like I need to go out and do some good in the world! Thanks again.
I learned more from this video than from any other I have viewed in the past several weeks as I attempt to do some repair work on an old car that I'm not ready to part with.
Thats great mate, Thanks,
Your tip at @ 10:10 just saved me a load of hassle, thank you very much for this true pearl of wisdom. I was having a nightmare with one spot that just kept producing a fish eye in my base coat, - wiped some Kurust in there, let it dry, and it covered brilliantly., cheers mate and happy New Year!
Scott Best that's great
a life times worth of knowledge in ten mins and for free ,,,, bargain of a life time.
This lesson will definitely save a lot of people a lot of anguish. Thanks Bro!
Thanks mate, this video is truly a lifesaver!
I like your presentation style and information.
Thank you.
Another great informative video.
I learned the most ever about paint from this one video Thanks Bro
Hey man getting closer to 100k subs! Congrats! Great video!
Thanks. Would love to get there by the end of the year.
Awesome info as usual mate! Hoping you can touch on rust repair someday...my Wrx wagon has some issues lol
Really a great video.
Keep it up :)
great tips! thanks again. Your canal is my favorite! maybe more about painting motorcycle parts? :)
awesome explanations of everything! Thank you for this video!!
This is so awesome bro, cheers.
Dont forget you can change the nozzle heads for a diff pattern, the ones I hate are the 'adjusable' fan heads and they always get changed for a better head.
Great advice on secondary painting over clear and scrap dead clear coat from UV too stuff
Great and informative video. Cheers from Brisbane.
Best painting video I've seen.
Great vid Dave, thanks
Crap! You do better with a can than I do with a gun!! Thanks very much for the vids!
thanks a lot sir this helps me alot in doing my car project myself 😊😊😊
This guy explains very well and great tips :)
Best fan from a spray can man!
Great video.
Best paint from a can ive ever used on wheels is rustoleum trim and bumper paint. Its a matte black that holds up so well to the elements. I sprayed my subarus alloys 2yrs ago 3 coats sanded to 320 an no primer. It looks great still and doesnt chip or flake at all even through the new england winters.
once again great vid
Great and very helpful video. Thank you! Exactly today I've painted the bumper cover (plastic) and although 3 layers of primer laid down perfectly (as was seemed to the eye), the black paint over prime immediately started to give effect, where in very small areas, the paint just didn't want to lay. This made me very nervous, I did layer over layer, still same effect. At the end I let it all dry, and clearcoated (3 layers). Very disappointing. To correct this (to repaint) should i do all from beginning, starting sand paper, or could be enough to try to spray again black (and then clear coat)?
Great video! Really helpful. What about clear coat that is peeling off? What's the best way to deal with them?
Awesome Video!
great video, good info, thanks
Great video, can you do a detailed video on sanding techniques? Unless you may have one already.
Thanks
Ill try man
I enjoy your vids and learn a lot from them. But I'm surprised to see the small circular pattern from the Duplicolor tip. Might be different there but here in the U.S. I use that paint because of it's durable finish and the blue tip with the wire pushrod gives a nice wide fan pattern. Plus, in my opinion, it's the most comfortable to use. Years ago Rustoleum switched from the blue tip to one they call the "comfort" tip. It's anything but comfortable!
Thank you for the videos dude. Cool guy
Great info bro , i like that you didn't just regurgitate what they teach in school , you show real experience and skills
*cick-point* wink ;)
Really good video
Good vid mate...👍
@customspraymods that dupli color can. on the blue nozzle, turn that white piece attached to it. It changes the fan of the nozzle. (it does in every case ive seen, though i have never used dupli color engine paint)
for fisheyes in the paint from silicone you can actually add small bit of silicone additive to the paint and sorts it right out
Thanks for both great video's !!!
Gerrit TjaardA Marinus no problem. Thanks for watching
Great.. nice video,thanks...:)
Good information man..
Awesome I just used the tips from the video and got me some Rustoleum from ghettomart ( it did take 14 5/8 coats though) but it looks way better than any Rolls Royce or Porsche though!!!
i subscribed as soon as he said "different cans have different fans" lol
anthony mazzola YESSsSSsss
agree with these. good video
here's one for you, I'm going to spray two different clear coats.
one satin over one colour and high gloss over another what's the best way to achieve a flawless finish with minimal raised edges that can cause one or the other to lift and peel??
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you thank you thank you!!
with the spraycan fan, one could get a different nozzle, since the cans usually have a standardized cap, montana has awesome caps with a super wide fan, just order that cap for all the cans you have
Is this guy from another country like Australia or England perhaps? Maybe they don't do it like that there. You could just replace the one on the can I guess with the same one, pass it around.
with the silicone boils, do you apply the same technique and products to plastic? I had this happen on a headlight casing made of plastic
Love the channel mate 🤙🏻🇦🇺. What air compressor is a good starting point? Would like to spray and use air tools with it. Cheers legends.
Thanks mate. For air tools you would want free air delivery of over 300lpm.
What is the grit of sandpaper that you recommend for prepping a new surface? I bought 1000 and 1500 grit. Also how long do you wait between base coats and how many coats do you recommend? Do you use degreaser for a new surface before applying the color? Lots of questions but never done this before. thanks
With the paint type subject, you mentioned engine paint. Does that stuff really apply to high temps too ? Little skeptical about using anything else other than high temp paint on an engine or exhaust
Hi there, i did my dads Magna very moons ago a did a good job, till this day though the paint is still sticky applied clear coats and all and dusts keeps sticking to it and doesnt lickt touching it etc, could this be the product or some error i have done?
Thanks for that mate especially about the silicon like I asked about and now I no that it's true !
You are standing strangely in the intro lol. That's coo....
my most common spray problem is the crackling earthquake type look as i spray my 4th or 5th coat. like a desert floor.
LastHumansGarage because u havent sanded enough of the existing laquer? i used to have that problem
LastHumansGarage your letting your coats dry to much...every ten minutes reaplly your coats...if you let the coats dry to long ,then you have to sand before second or third coat...the coats will stick better when still a little wet...5 or ten minutes is enough time for reapplying coats
@@jamesbrown1046 I suppose every time you go around the car it is time to do it again. I heard every 20 minutes. I suppose I need to do a few pieces at a time instead of the whole car. It takes longer than 5 or 10 minutes to spray a whole car.
You should do a video of when yo use and what type of primer
You you go to artprimo or bombing science you can purchase caps for spray cans that will alter the fan of the paint. I recommend “fat caps” as the best way to spray paint is take your time apply very light coats every few minutes and build it up. Very time consuming and costly on large surfaces though.
I have one for you. What about getting light surface scratches out of chrome motorcycle exhaust???
I have got clear coat fail fom the factory job that started less than 5 years after I bought it new. Over half the car has been repainted nicely since my ex wrecked it good 8 years ago. It's a 2007 Honda Civic. How much time would it take to strip away the paint from less than half of the car's surface to repaint it ?
What is the color of that wheel its gorgeous
Which spray can clear coat is best for my headlights
What type of clear is the best for headlights ?
Can you use spray cans to paint a car? What kind of paint should be used?
hi... need advise, if i spray chrome over High temp black... will it stay?
how to paint for ex. tank or helmet with many layers? when I put clear on it I have problem with diferent thickness so I have to put about 6 layers of clear and polished this. is it right? or maybe You could give me some advice?
so how about the durable of spray can? in my place indonesia too much painter using sun for it. yaa they using spray gun. but i wanna try a perfect painting surely. i want to try using spray can. in Indonesia best spray can is Samurai Paint. but how do it? i just have a little room yaa maybe too cold not strong enough for drying.
thanks alot
13 Production it's very hard to find samurai paint in tangerang
I'm always amazed how much I learn, even stuff I didn't know I wanted to learn about. ;-)
Wish you could "translate" your paint brand(s) to U.S. -but than life would be too simple Oh, Well, Spray On
U never stop learning dude that's for sure
What causes curdling?
When I repaint a black car white, do I have to remove all old paint down to bare metal or can I just scuff the old paint and then do a base + clear coat?
The later bit use primer. 👍
What brans spray can you'd recommend?
Great video!!! Do you need a an apprentice?
What's the best way to protect clear coat from UV attack?
I'd say let it dry a month before washing it. Then apply something like f11 to it. Or another high quality synthetic wax. The clear costs job is to protect from uv damage but these new synthetic waxes are amazing like the commercial I sprayed my hood and the bottle slid right off. One of the few finishing products worth the money. I say wait a month because you want all the solvent vented away. If solvent is trapped under wax it will bubble up
At 10:10 you show metal conditioner being wiped over a motorcycle fuel tank to remove silicone contamination. Is that tank at the bare metal stage or does it have primer on it? I have never read / heard of metal conditioner being used to counteract silicone contamination so I am naturally interested in that as a solution.
What type of spray guy would you recommend for someone doing small body work on a truck for oneself that dosent cost a lot. Just painting a fender and a side of a pickup truck
Thanks
Try a gravity feed spray gun. Something that has a fan and air adjustment dials. Depending on your paint choice, If 2k base or clear use a 1.3mm tip. Hope this helps
Can you paint on chrome metals?
I know this is really old in internet time, but i'll ask anyway because i hope to clear
something up.
I've got an alu bike frame, i've sanded it down to bare aluminium and
here's my thought process for what to do, please correct me if i'm
wrong.
I sand it to 400 to remove the rougher grooves
Apply etch primer
scuff it up with 800
wipe it down with motip degreaser
apply my black basecoat
scuff it up again, wipe it down, apply masking tape
apply my blue metallic in the area i want
then wipe it down and apply clear.
This is correct?
Or, do i need something else than a black basecoat for the blue
metallic?
Should i lay down some silver or other bright color and mask slightly
inside this to create a barrier between the black and blue?
Am i on the right path?
yes it's a diy-rattle can job.
I'm so scared to start.
I'd like to spray can paint on my wheel arches to match the car's color, currently it's matte, I believe it's got some protective paint on it. Please advise on how I could paint my wheel arches.
I think you have figured it out by now. But in case you haven't. Try sanding it down first. There are plenty of videos on you tube about doing rims or arches.
how about the nozzels , do they look diffrent
very true!
Great channel. Excellent knowledge. From someone who is a professional, I still find a lot to interest me. Constructively, turn off your fan while you talk. ;-)
got a mobile paint booth. What's the best way to heat in the winter so I can keep spray painting
Try a small electric room heater. I suppose being 2 years ago when you asked, you probably have it figured out by now.
Can I use something like Rustolium to prime or paint thin plastic like a model car or airplane? I've heard automotive paints will warp and even melt thinner plastics. Thanks.
I'm pretty sure Rust-oleum has straight-on plastic paint.
And now that I saw this video, I really have to redo the tailpipe on my daily driver. I don't want to put a tip on, and I stupidly clearcoated it before I let the enamel base cure. Uncured base on a hot exhaust = instant clearcoat failure.
If you used to do "public art" you know that you don't have to depend on the cap that came with the can. You can buy individual caps....or at least you used to. The german caps used to have the widest spray but you did need to know how far to keep the spray to prevent drip.
As a finish color, over sanded primer, has anyone sprayed Rust-Oleum Matte Hammered Black #300607 for 2 medium coats, and finished it with two medium-light coats of Rust-Oleum metallic dark or navy blue?
I want to have the hammered texture, but I can't find metallic hammered dark blue paint available anywhere. So I thought this would do. Both colors would be Rust-Oleum brand paints of same type. I'd apply each coat about 20 minutes apart in the shade of an open carport so each layer wouldn't be entirely dry, but not wet either.
whats the rule for layers... base coat vs. clear (finish) coat
Painted my car with rustoleum with spray cans and got 0 stripes and virtually 0 orange peel. I wet sanded and buffed/polished it looks almost professional. Put 2k clear on it and its been 2 years. 0 crack 0 fading and its my daily in the florida sun every day it sits outside. You can get a great end result if your patient. Cant beat it for under 80 bucks with all material. It worked for me. It can work for anyone else. Its all about the prep.
Seems to me that a conical fan on an engine spray is what I'd want. Fan shapes for panels, conical for working around castings surely?
I will rather used sprayguns. I let my guns work for me not me working for them.
how do i fix a smudge in my paint work
are you saying 2 part or 2pak?
The red cap on the VG paint is called the "Red Caligraphy". Love that cap! You can get it here: artprimo.com/catalog/calligraphy-p-319.html
can you paint chrome wheels
