2.50hp Briggs and Stratton engine REBUILD pt. 1!

- In this very lengthy and relaxing build (which I spent more time on than any other video) I completely rebuild a Briggs and Stratton 2.50hp. this is different than my usual "restorations" because those I usually just paint them, this one I DONT paint them and restore them from the inside. this took me over a month to record, I paid a lot of attention to detail.
filmed on the Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 - Наука та технологія
easy way to clean out a dirty petrol tank is to put some sharp gravel in it and shake it around
I have one of these motors from a 73 toro sport lawnmower. It's a reel mower. I'm planning on restoring. An this really helped me get a better sense for the motor rebuild. Much appreciated. I now look foward to getting it fixed for summer mowing
Great! just straight and to the point. I got my engine running like new, with your help!!!
Just bought an old McLane edger with a 1982 version of this engine. Feel confident in doing the tune up now thanks to this. Outstanding video!
That’s so great to hear! It’s comments like this that make it worth it to make these videos. Good luck on your rebuild!
i'd watch Taryl Fixes All if you want an honest tutorial.
Thanks for posting this. I have a 2hp Briggs from an edger and I'm following
along. Appreciate the help.
no problem! thanks for watching!
Me too. A 1958 Lawn King with this motor!
Wow, that engine idling sound brings back memories of my mini bike when i was a kid in the 60's.
Nice work!!
Gave a like. My three cents worth. White vinegar for rust soaking, Dawn dish detergent, Simplegreen and hot water for degreasing. All are environmentally safe. Worked great for my "76" B&S 2hp teardown refresh.
Great video! Working on one right jow
Wow, you make that look easy.
Really good budget rebuild :-)
Really good video as a tutorial 👌.
Finally a UA-camr that doesn't like the sound of his own voice great video bud
well done
Use a piece of 2x4 for removing the starter clutch. I know you might not break the fins now but I broke a lot doing that. Great job on the rebuild. Love those briggs
Or pad the jaws of a large channel-loc pliers and no one will ever know you were in there.
Where did you find the replacement oil seals?
Any idea where i can buy a carburator for this exact model motor. Ebay and amazon are a dud so far.
Nice job of rebuilding it. A week ago, someone gave me a 5 hp B and S. According to the code it was made in 1976. Said it hasn't been started in years. Air filter was totally curded up so took it off. Gas tank dry so put in about half inch of gas. Removed spark plug and just wiped it with a rag and reinstalled. Pulled out choke, pulled and it sputtered. Pulled again ran rough and pushed in the choke. Running super smooth. There was clean looking oil in crankcase. Really though I would have to tear into it to get it running.
Where can new rings be purchased for the 2hp? Nice video btw.
Nice Job! For a second I thought I was watching Hand Tool Rescue! :) This was made in 1966 if you didn't already know. I have a similar 2.25HP from 64 on a scooter I built and it is quite a good little engine! As for the gas tank, I usually fill mine with kerosene and some nuts and shake it around a bunch. That seems to do a good job of removing the crap in it. Do you have any plans for this engine or is it just another one for the collection?
I guess just another one for the collection, although it was already in my collection for a couple months, it may turn into one of the strange engine builds i do. (see through engine, compressed air engine) and yes, i know how to tell the date, this engine was made February 22, 1966.
Great video, just got my dads old mixer with one of these exact engines on it. What model is it as can’t find number on his. Also air filter sponge, what’s the part number? Thanks again.
not sure on the numbers but just search for the parts on ebay
I like how you had a bird to the commentary
Hi, I’m just getting into rebuilding these small flathead engines. Where do you think is the best place to buy an overhaul rebuild kit for a 5 horse flathead Briggs would be? Thanks.
I get my parts on Amazon and it’s always worked for me
Do you find that assembly lube is not necessary? I know "we aren't building a rocket ship" as Taryl would say. I have the almost same motor on my McClane edger but it's a 2HP. Great vid!
lol im sure assembly lube helps, but its a 50 year old engine and its TINY so im sure its gonna be fine without it 😂
Do you know what the spec is for the value clearance is for this engine?I have the same one and cant get a correct spec?
Not off the top of my head, but I’d say 0.06” intake and 0.08” exhaust is a good baseline
Nice, some parts were really fast though, even at 0.25x speed. Wiring the points for example.
Great video. I’ve just bought a Scott Bonnar lawn mower with the same engine. Low compression and no spark, but I haven’t had time to go through the basics. I did a compression test and it’s 75 psi. Will that be too low or enough.
75 is right where it should be 👍

Thanks for the reply. I’ll let you know how I get on.
Hi Malcolm. I just picked up a Scotty recently with the same motor. How’d you go? Mine doesn’t start either. Still need to pull it apart but have no clue what I’m doing all I’ve done is replaced the spark plug and given it a spray of starting fluid in the air intake but still no bueno! Great vid! 👍🏾
I have exact motor, but gas tank has too much rust and made a small hole. Where can i get another? Thanks. Good video.. easy motors... +
Check eBay
Where do you find all the replacement parts? Are there kits?
eBay
Where you guys getting the parts for the rebuild ? I got 3 briggs 2 of them I wouldn't mind rebuilding.
amazon and eBay are great sources for parts
@@WildfoxFabrication thank you i will keep an eye out!
hi do you know what size is the key and what is the size of the shaft this would really help if you could tell me thanks
great vid btw
Shaft is 5/8” and I think the key is 3/16”
Thank you so much
Where can I find rebuild kits/parts for this same engine?
ebay is a good source
You should get some 3 Hp guts on ebay and make that thing a stroker!
Ive seen it done in one of my engine groups on FB and it sounded MEAN.
LOL that’s awesome. if i search around i might have a 3hp crank. i could also weld onto the cam and increase the lift. thanks for watching! this video took forever to make.
Do you know where I can find the air cleaner? -thanks
Search 2.50hp briggs air filter on eBay and you will find it
nice video, i rebuilt a 5 hp one, and that thing is a mean motor

On my 2 hp there is an electrical wire running from the coil to the carburetor. Is that needed?
thats the kill switch wire, it kills the engine when the throttle is moved past the idle position. if you remove it the engine will run fine it just wont have a kill switch. I usually disconnect it when trying to diagnose an engine, in case it is faulty and is causing the engine to lose spark
Thank you for the answer, then I will disconnect it too
@@WildfoxFabrication Thanks, one less question.
It remains to find out whether there should be a thin wire on the coil and why the tongue to the flywheel sticks out of the coil.
And yes it's Hello from Russia!
what is the thumb screw on the side of the carburetor for?
air fuel mixture adjustment
Thanks to all the help from you I actually got my engine to run. Great videos and a great guy making them.
love to hear that!
Do you have a video you could link on carb tuning?
My motor eventually starts, but I'l trying to get that down to 1-3 pulls
There a little screw on the carb warm the engine up for a few min an turn the screw an 1/8th turn left or right until it sounds good an kill it an see if it starts good, an engine thats been setting for a week or two 3 to 6 pulls is pretty good in my opinion
Hey man i am rebuilding one of these too right now and im trying to find where i can buy a new solenoid and i was wondering if you knew anything that could help me out. Thanks great video!
I don’t know of any solenoid in one of these engines? are you talking about the points ignition?
@@WildfoxFabrication yea
look on amazon and ebay
If I was doing this I would just order the electronic ignition coil for this and bypass the points.
@@connorssmallengines6663 I prefer the points over the electronic ignition cause points produce a reliable spark even at very low rpms
I need an engine exactly like that. Where might I find one?
well, here in utah they seem to be the most plentiful “vintage” engine. i have about 3 right now, and i’ve had lots more in the past. check local classifieds, ebay, and other places like that and just always keep your eyes peeled.
Down to a Science thanks!
was that a fly going past the camera 9:56 heheheh
😂 no that is a plane flying overhead, we get a ton of small personal airplanes flying around
My Uncle has an 3hp engine and that engine was'nt used for 25 oder 30 years and it started under 4 Minutes
i did not know B&S made a 6ci motor
They have made much smaller lol
When the flywheels weren’t made out of cheap plastic
You forgot to set your valve clearance.
no, i didnt, i just dont show every little detail in the videos because it's boring and adds unnecessary length
When I was a boy my 3.5 hp Briggs's died and my mini bike needed a new motor
My neighbor had an ancient mower with a horizontal 2.5hp,
It was just as fast and powerful as my old motor much to my surprise.
