    The water in the cylinder must have been rather fresh. Those cast iron cylinder sleeves get flash rust rather quicky. You are lucky.

      Agree! Rain water can be pretty pure (i.e., non-acidic) and the sleeves are somewhat air-tight. That's probably what saved them.

      I wonder if there was water in the muffler the leaked in when he turned the engine upright because it was on its side

      Way too red and smooth rust for only being exposed weather, clean not tarnish sparkplug wire, clean airfilter, clean oil, no sludge in carb, Shiny zinc bolt. More like decent motor removed from paint and sprayed with vinegar and get rusted fast.

    Never a doubt it would start and run. Those engines, like the Briggs, are pretty much bullet proof. Very nice restoration. Looks like it came directly off the Honda assembly line.

      @@henrycole6399 also excellent parts availability/support, with some small engines their catalogue of replacement parts has basically one item: "engine"

    Spectacular job and smashing results! Honda engines really are bulletproof, to a degree. The fact that, even with water in the cylinder, it wasn't rusted is mind boggling but definitely a blessing.

    Always enjoy your videos, lovely job on this engine, you and UA-camr Mustie1 are my favorite mechanics for engine repairs and the like (give his channel a try if you've not heard of it, he really knows his engines - he doesn't restore them like you do but he gets even the most rusty engine working reliably).
    Out of interest, was that engine just as rusty when you first stored it outside or has the bulk of the rust occurred since it was put outside? It's of course tough to keep things dry if you don't have a suitable storage shed and covering them with a tarp of similar when outside just means that damp still accumulates (but it at least stops rain entering via the air filter, etc)..

    • @AJRestoration
      @AJRestoration 7 місяців тому +1

      Mustie1 is awesome, he was my inspiration for working on smaller engines.

    • @SlartiMarvinbartfast
      @SlartiMarvinbartfast 7 місяців тому

      @@AJRestoration Great to hear. I discovered Mustie1 a few years ago - not only is he first class at repairing engines (and other things) but he's such a nice and often funny guy who also makes his audience feel included due to the way he talks to the camera as he is working. I sometimes wish he would restore engines (as beautifully seen in this video for example) but he seems to mainly prefer the actual diagnostic and repair process, and that's fine.

    • @LouisGiliberto
      @LouisGiliberto 7 місяців тому

      @@Spudchucker92 That's a fair approach - one of not wanting to somehow support someone that holds an opinion offensive to us.
      Personally if I stopped watching every YTer or Hollywood star I disagreed with, at least half my playlist will be gone. So as long as they don't bring politics, religion, ideology forcibly into their art / videos, it doesn't bother me. Just my take.

    it would be nice to see the young bucks getting into projects like these , you can find engines like this at your local scrap yard and they will usually sell them to you for about $10 or in the case of my local yard they just give them away to restorers . you dont need fancy tools a cheap socket set, sand paper. a $20 gasket kit, some spray paint. a few days cleaning and just like that you can sell the engine for around $100. i did this when i was too young to work a job and i made loads of money. it paid for my bike when i was 13 and later my 1st car. you learn a lot of great skills along the way as well. you young fellas have no excuse you have the internet these days to hold your hand. i had to read scraps of paper covered in oil to learn lol.

      @evilferret1453 7 місяців тому

      if you want to know how to sell the engines after you fixed them here is what i did. here in the USA during the summer people have yard sales i would go to the person having the yard sale and ask them if they could sell my engines as well . and i would offer them $5 per sale. i dont think i was ever turned down. that was me 13 years old hauling a bunch of engines around in a wagon. everyone in my neighborhood eventually had a rebuilt engine on their mowers and i had a hot rod 77 cutlass when i was 16 that my dad was jealous of lol
