  • This engine was given to me by my friend.
i think this is a lawn mower engine or something similar due to all the grass inside it
i did a full engine rebuild complete strip down and re build paint and clean up i sand blasted every nut and bolt it was a real pain in the back side there is allot of work i did off camera for this engine over haul and restoration i timed up this small engine i did the small engine points and ignition timing and coil
the points on a brigs and stratton engine arnt hard to do
it was a bit hard to start the engine after the re build but it ran perfectly

I get a lot of hate on my videos id like to address.. when people ask me why I don't do things a certain way and buy new parts the reason is I don't have the spare money I'm just a normal working man with a family I'm not a rich UA-camr I don't have a good job anything like that I'm just a normal guy working 50 hrs a week like you.. I would have loved to buy a new air filter and gasket set for this engine but I've got 3 children to feed and I don't have the money to buy it my daily struggle is the same as yours believe me.... it cost me £50 to do this little project for primer paint oil silicone etc all paid from my day job and hard work ... I just make videos because I enjoy doing it in my spare time and for people to enjoy if they like it...... I don't claim to be good at this stuff I'm just learning as I go on.... just remember everything I use in the video I've paid for by working at my normal job no one gives me anything so a lot of effort goes in on top of the actual restoration to get the money to pay for things I use on the videos ... I do my best hope you understand a little bit now why I do it as I do hope one day I will be able to do it better but keep with me guess i carnt get any worse. Billy

I am like you. I am just an average guy who works hard, but doesn't have a lot of money.
I don't always fix things the way society thinks I should. But I take pride and do it the best I can.
For the critics, I say to hell with them. Most of them are the type of people who need detailed instructions on how to use a roll of toilet paper.

Other then the RTV on every thing. And the painting inside the engine and sandblasting the valves . He did a nice job. But in the end the engine had a rod knock. You could even see the play in the rod when he put the rod cap back on. But in the end it did run. And looks nice. I give him credit for trying and he will get better over time

Man keep it up but I gotta say when you was removing the bolt , pounding the top of the cylinder assembly with a screw driver I was worried you would skin it up and the gasket wouldn’t seal. But it did! Good job!

In my opinion, it looked good and ran good. What else would a professional mechanic have hoped for? I think you did a great job. There's a lot to be said for getting the job with what you have as opposed to having everything you need. Keep it up!

Wonderful video. Brought back some great memories. I don’t think I saw you pull the valves but I might have missed it. The really high hour units I have rebuilt will get a lot of slop on the valve guides so that is something to check.

Top shelf video! No need minding the haters. Keep up the good work! Working hands get calloused, and so will you! Do this because it's fun for you! That's all that matters! Subject was good, engine was cool, length if video good and you probably motivated thousands to try something like this because it's not so daunting, and you did it with what you had! Enough of the pep talk! Chin up, forward you go! Thanks for posting

Was good to see you used a liberal amount of lube on reassembly... that is key for extended engine life on start up. I have seen some vids a few years back where lube was either not used at all or was minimal. Nice little engine, looks good and sounded great and another one saved from the scrap heap. 🛠️👍

Nice job!... especially with an old Briggs. It has been my experience that the only thing that wears out on a B&S engine is the pull rope and rope rewind spring. I was really expecting to watch you pull on the rope and adjust the carburetor to no avail before throwing the engine in the junk pile.

I have a question, out of curiosity, why the decision to omit the muffler's star nut?

0:57 usually every 3.5 hp classic briggs engine will have their serial number either on the shroud or somewhere facing the head part of the engine. the third code's first two numbers will give the month then the next number or numbers will give the date and the last pair will give the year e.g. [ 2. 20. 77 ] the rest of the numbers i think are the factory catalog code just in case the batch of engines were to be recalled this is a technical view point i think . i know one of the other sets will give you bore stroke CC capacity torque output and soforth. im not saying im a know it all im just going by what i do in fact know and what i think is right. also with the carburetor type this one tells me your code should be on the shroud and the carburetor type also tells me your engine could be from the range of 1962 or later all the way up to 1976 or later.

Thats a 3 and it was before they stamped it. It had an aluminum model tag screwed on which was missing. 1965 and up started the code 64 and back was serial and DOM was not in those. You have to either contact briggs and give them the serial and if they cant you go to the antique briggs website and they can using the records. 1982-83 started magnetron so you'll always know if you have one before or after that year.
Also the code is year, month and day. So code 940211 for example is 1994, April 11ty, you had it backwards.

The model number gives the cubic inch of the engine. First two digits, so if it starts of 09 its a 9 cubic inch.
