That tune you came up with to showcase these pedals is so beyond great. It's so hard to find music that has that kind of feel, you are one of a kind!
Thanks!!
Totally agree with that! Superior quality video, really nice and a IMHO FYI your mic setup for voice ocer is sooo great and sound a LOT like Greg at Hoise of Kush gear hehe GREAT JOB! Ordered a the Nobel just for this video alone at Thomann !
Not only are you humble, but you obviously love what you do. Those are 2 big reasons that so many of us watch your videos...not to mention your supernatural talent, killer tracks, great gear, etc, etc, etc.
100% agree. The only problem with Pete is that he makes anything sound awesome and I want most of the stuff he demos.
ODR-1 all the way!!! I’ve had 3 since 1992 and they just are the best OD to me ever. I’ve never taken the other 2 ODR-1 ones out of their box. Built like a tank despite the apparence.
Wow! Really surprised by the D&M. Thanks for taking the time, Pete.
The sound is in his fingers............. and the guitars, amp & pedals. Great playing and great presentation as always, many thanks!
I'd much rather enjoy quality over quantity content... and Pete always delivers quality.
Thanks!
Idk he’s seams to pull off both really well
Yes, 100% agree, great choice for a video. One if the reasons I watch Pete's videos. Always great. And the music tracks are really enjoyable.
Pete, thanks for staying here. You really inspire me for being a better guitar player. Ariel, from Chile
Pete’s creativity, melodic sense, and chops are through the friggin’ roof!!
I have been playing for about 20 years, didn't really give much attention to tone and gear. Used to focus more on composition and playing itself. I now realize there is more beauty to add when you mix good playing with good sound. Good tone can also be joyful and inspiring to play better. However, when a good guitarist is playing with feeling he could produce a good sound using whatever he touches with his hands. While I appreciate the effort and time put to make this video, I seriously think those pedals almost all sound the same! they are all good, but still I don't understand whu would someone prefer or choose one beside the others!! Thanks Pete, your videos are all of great help and inspiration. Greetings from Egypt.
Boy were you right. They all Sound Great. You can't go wrong with either one. Pete ( when I am burnt out ) I go Chill in Hawaii for 10 days - that will: "Hit the Re-Set Button" on Life. Love your work brother.
Hey Pete, I love going back to your old videos. They are still relevant. Hope you read comments in these old videos too.
I do sometimes! :)
The Nobels ODR-1 is the winner for me. It brings the licks through the mix extremely well and sounds very musical. Very good video, thanks.
Thanks for coming back Pete. Don't feel pushed, good to take your time... even wind back frequency of clip s but I'm always going to tune in to hear your views and great playing.
Yo, Pete. Just dropping you a line from the Kootenays. Always great to see your reviews and explorations. I dig the stuff you do; from pedalboards to your live rig from Japan. There are not many UA-camrs of any genre that have more to offer than you. Keep up the great work.
I just bought Pete Thorn II and I think it is killer! It's on full rotation in my truck. Great tunes and your guitar really sings...which is necessary when there is no singer. lol.
Thanks for all you do, and for making this fellow Canadian feel a little more connected to the music world at large.
Five years later, and Pete's demo is still beautiful; Maybe even more so today. I do like the D&M.
For people that have to spend their hard earned money on gear, the fact that the cost of the Nobels is less than half of the others is worth mentioning.
Agreed. Great bang for the buck.
Indeed, but the others are 2 pedals in 1.
A friend gave me a Nobels that I kept in a cabinet for a long time. The other day I pulled it out and put it on the board and I must say, this is not your Pappa's 808. this is a serious pedal. Great bottom end.
TJ Nugent : The TS808 is a great pedal, completely “professional”, and is on many pedalboards for a good reason.
That “bottom end” interferes with other instruments like the bass and the kick drum.
That “mid hump” slices through a mix the same way that a Celestion Vintage 30 does.
I’m not a fan of that speaker but I’ve had an original TS808 for decades and would never sell it.
Have you ever heard an original with the original (not a reissue) JRC4558D chip?
@@freecitizen2760 It's funny how you first praise the 808 for it's merits in a live band setting, and then start talking about vintage chips. I doubt that more than 1% of guitarists could hear any difference between the original 808 and the reissue in a blind test when played with a band. And then there's the fact that not everybody are playing in a conventional band set up, and might therefore want different things from their overdrives. The 808 is great for some things, but there's more to guitar than SRV-style blues and rock.
Wow! ODR1 really stood out for me. Might be interesting to shoot out an ODR1 and a Timmy
You know you’re a fan when you “like” before you’ve even started watching the video....
Now having watched... great video - Thanks Pete!. Clearly I need to spend some more tweeking time with my ODR-1!
Some fine playing there Pete. I definitely prefer the green ODR-1 pedal for my style of music.
Pete: Please don't worry too much about youtube and burnout. I don't think you will ever fall into that abyss for a couple of reasons: youtube is NOT your main source of income and more importantly, your personality would indicate that you will know when and for how long to take breaks. And that's totally cool I think for the majority of your fans around here.
Bottom line for me: I don't need a routine, scheduled Pete Thorn video every 24 hours. What I do hope for is continued, best of class gear demos and gorgeous playing whenever you have time between gigs, clinics, writing and recording new music, your real jobs....etc... :)
Pete, I know I am not alone in saying that you're a gem here on youtube - honest, engaging, interesting and a helluva musician.
What I actually do wish for from you, time allowing, is perhaps some more occasional collabs with other key youtubers [i.e., ones I like, because, well, it's all about me...lol :P ] - need more Pete and Tim. Love to see you hook up somehow with guys like Rhett Shull and Rick Beato [but especially Rhett as I feel you guys would be like peanut butter and jelly together]. Hell, I think we'd all enjoy some kinda collab with Brian Wampler and maybe Phil McKnight as well!
Another thing to throw out for your consideration: your thoughts on what I am personally referring to as the "next gen" guitar gurus out there leveraging youtube, IG, etc...People like Aaron Marshall, Plini, David Maxim Micic, bands like For Giants, Disperse, Polyphia....bands and players of that ilk. And along with that, maybe a vid with your thoughts on super modern guitar makers like Aristedes and Steinberg.
Like that classic song says Pete - don't go changin', to try to please me... :D
cheers brotha
Analogman King of Tone is the best for me. Thank you.
Pete: you’ll never be redundant.
I love your stuff and your honesty.
When it comes to ODs, they all begin sounding alike to me after a while!
I like MI audio, Friedman DS, Fulltone... so many choices.
Would really love to see you and Ian Thornley kick it out soon! ( maybe share your favourite back bacon recipes, eh?)
Nobels. Already on my board, love it, great with a boost in front too. I run an original Marshall bluesbreaker, or my amp 11.
This, and the "tone secrets" videos (and Guitcon/collabs) are some of my favorites on all of UA-cam, Pete. Keep being awesome.
Nice vid for the Three pedals in question. I have the Nobels ODR-1& I Don't regretting that pedal at all. As matter a fact I had my best friend tried it against his KOT Pedal when I lent to him for a week with his gear etc ! I found out later he sold his KOT & got a Nobels. He said "' I always found it pleasing to my ears every time I played with it no matter what guitar I used"! Its something to have in your rig I'm telling you!
Great video, Pete!
Tele by itself sounds great! That’s my pick. I think the ODR-1 complements the root tone best.
That Keeley pedal is nuts! I have one. Most versatile pedal I’ve owned. If I’m playing single coils in particular it’s the only drive I’ll use. I do sometimes put a ts9 before it as a clean boost to further boost the gain too.
1 of each! But the Nobels ODR1 caught my attention.
In the full mix I think I preferred the D&M Drive, then the Keeley, then the Nobles. Alone, the Nobles sounded the sweetest and most pleasing to the ear. Excellent and fun video Pete.
Very honest of you Pete, do as much of this as you want and no more. Your content is great and you're a superb player, we're lucky whenever you get chance to do something!
Love how that tele of yours sounds Pete
Hi Pete stunning playing as always good to see you back on the pedal demos
Great video Pete and it's good that you took/take a break. Your work is great, but it has to be fun for you too. Thanks.
The Nobels really colors the unique sound of both instruments Pete used. It's a cool low gain sound though. Hard to argue with the KOT's transparency and dynamics. Watch how differently the lead solo was played with the Nobels vs the KOT.
And Pete, your playing just gets more and more beautiful. You play musical lines like a great lieder singer. Thank you for so graciously sharing your time and talent.
Thank you for posting this. I must have watched this a couple dozen times. I decided a Nobels for my church playing, but KOT is amazingly just right & D&M as you say is so versatile, a winner too.
Tim Pierce's videos made me really want one of those Nobels, been thinking about one for a while. Really all three of them are fantastic, I'd be glad to have any of them, however the D and M surprised me with how nice it sounded. The Nobels sounded so good on that Tele, just the right right level of grit and compression to get it to cut through the mix.
Caleb knott Nashville cats love Tele’s!
I’ve been on the waiting list for a KoT for over a year. I just bought the Nobles after I found out it was $100. Thanks for the demo, this was a real eye opener!
Thanks Robert, kind regards from the Nobels Team! Spread the word... :-)
Recently got the Nobels Overdrive, its open sounding but with body. The best overdrive I had heard.
Based on this demo, I'd go with the KoT for low gain and the D&M Drive for leads. Thanks Pete! Cool piece.
Never heard of Nobles, but will be googling now! Loved the harmonics from that one. D&M was a close really awesome too.
Thanks Pete for a fun video! Love that Jimi picture in the background!!
I loved the format of the video, the sounds and the way you say the variation of tones inspires new music. Thanks for the channel! Be sure you make us all better!
Nice to see you running both sides of the KoT turned on for the lead tone. So many reviews don't show this mode, which is where the KoT excels. I liked all 3 pedals, but the lead tone on the KoT was my favorite. Terrific presentation!
I've listened to this video at least a 1/2 dozen times now. I've listened to it on different types of speakers from the car system to my in ear monitors to my home stereo and I just can't seem ti decide which is best. They all sound so good.
The Nobels ODR-1 is the single pedal among dozens and dozens I've tried that I cannot fault. It truly is awesome.
Plus I've found that no matter what amp or pedals you stack it with, it always complements the sound very nicely. Excels at low to high gain.
At full gain it's a bit boomy which could get buried in the mix but I really dig the way it's clipping, still perfectly natural sounding and usable even at full throttle.
I just sold my beloved ibanez TS10 and fulltone 2B boost on ebay. The ODR-1 is to blame. If I can take only 1 pedal with me, the ODR-1 is it.
Thanks for your warm words......kind regards from the Nobels team!
@@nobelsofficial5766 hehey! Thanks for dropping by. You're welcome. And many thanks for your awesome pedal. My quest for that nice creamy balanced breakup tone is over ;-)
@pete thorn
Thanks for the video comparison, awesome job as always. I have a 52 tele with nocasters on it, and acquiring and having used the ODR-1 has stunted my curiosity to try out the king of tone. How would you describe the advantages of the KOT over ODR-1 and vice versa? Many thanks in advance!
Wow, the work you put into making this. Absolutely great comparison of these pedals. Thanks so much. I bought the ODR-1 based on this and I absolutely love it!
I know this is an older video but i just keep coming back for this great piece of music!! so emotional and inspiring, i bought the Nobels ODR-1 on the back of this video, cheers Pete!
The Nobels ODR-1 is one of my favorite OD pedals-didn’t break the bank and sounds amazing.
Just got one! best $100 I ever spent on guitar stuff!
They all sounded good, but the Nobels had a magic to it that the others didn't quite match. Surprisingly, I liked the KOT the least.
Thanks Doug! Kind regards from the Nobels Team!
Every Demo from Pete is an album track, Great as Always!
Hope you keep enjoying making these videos, Pete because I sure enjoy watching (and listenting to ) them. Rock on, mate.
This is great Pete. I’ve wanted to see a demo of these exact three titles. You’re the best.
Lovely, great vid Pete!
Man I love your videos, please keep on loving making them as much as we do watching them 💪 these three sound suprisingly similar, not the same of course, but still pretty close.
I got an ODR-1. Inexpensive and sounds great. Really like it.
The King Of Tone V4 is user configurable with internal DIP switches. Each side can be independently set to clean boost (no diode clipping), overdrive (asymmetric diode clipping), or distortion (symmetric diode clipping.) I use both sides in clean boost mode (no diode clipping.) There are also internal trim pots for each side that can be used to increase the treble/presence if your amp, speakers, or guitar need a little extra treble. You can also run it at 18V for more headroom, which I do.
Great video Pete! I picked up a D&M drive at the Dallas Int'l Guitar Festival (2018) and it really is like two pedals in one enclosure and having the switch to choose Boost->Overdrive or Overdrive->Boost is so cool.
Great vid to come back on Pete. Enjoy your down time!
Great demo, great music and frankly 3 great pedals. Each pedal has it's place for each individual.
Nobel’s for me!! A video on how you created your lead sound would be great! It sounds killer in and out of the mix
Thanks S McClintock, kind regards from the Nobels Team!
Great video Peter, I've just ordered the ODR
That was big fun for me, so if it's for you, you're still on the right track mr. Thorn. You, brilliant player and nice guy, are in my top-3 demo-guitarist on YT. I bough some pedals you showcased. Now, I need the Nobels, I'm afraid. Keep up the good work en keep having fun. Cheers from Holland!
Thanks, Stroopwafel 61 - kind regards from the Nobels team - Hamburg/Germany
Great to see you back at one of the many things you do so well Pete. Your demos are worth watching just for the enjoyment of the skill you display but are also informative.
i generally skip the gab and go straight to the tones, except when its you Pete.. i enjoy the knowledge you share. thank for that
how did I miss this one, Pete? That was really helpful. That Nobels was a total surprise to me and Mick and Dan really did get something unique happening!
The demo is really convincing me to get an ODR-1! Great tone Pete!
I found this approach entertaining and super informative.
Take your time, Pete, and have fun!
Love the super rare Les Paul - P Bass hybrid in the background. Never seen one before, only ever read about them whilst researching the ancient Rock n Roll scrolls
I, for one, am all for you having fun with your videos, even if it means we get less regular content (though, of course, I hope it doesn't mean that!). We in the guitar community are lucky to have you making awesome vids!!! Oh, and all 3 sounded great!
ok, this is just pure top drawer playing and video making. Well done sir! I have the D&M drive - and while I do love the Mick side, I don't care for the Dan side, but I'll have to try it the way you use it, hitting Dan just for solos. thanks for the vid
What an absolute pleasure to watch and hear Pete - sheer class
Always the best reviews and knowledgeable insight from Pete.
Pete I always look forward to your videos. I appreciate and thank you for doing them.
All great pedals. My pic is king of tone for that slightly warmer lead tone. Great demo Pete.
Hey Pete,
Don't even think about replying to my comment. Hell I get it if you don't even read it. Your doing awesome! And I along with many others dig your show! You have helped me in so many ways. You have inspired me to even try my own youtube channel. First and foremost I need to get better at playing guitar...lol. Wish I could get past this damn pentatonic thing...another day...I enjoy working on amps, cabs and guitars as well as learning the guitar. Someday I hope I can be at least half the player you are, but at 40 years old its a hell of a push...cheers to one of the greatest!!!
John
Boom replied just like that
Haha thanks man!
too funny...leave me alone I'm watching your video!...lol Cheers man!
All I can say is that you continue to impress me with your playing, your videos, and your insights.
Great comparison Pete, top notch as usual. Really appreciate what you do.
Thanks a lot.
Excellent video Pete - thanks for that. Love the KOT, but not its price. Gonna spring for a Nobels. Your playing inspires me...
ODR 1 for Low Gain
Analog Man for Mid to High Gain
Another great video Pete 😎👍🏻
Thanks Priyadarshan Nag, kind regards from the Nobels Team!
Nobels sounded best alone to my ears, smooth, not fizzy/fuzzy like the others, great high end definition. I'm sold.
Of the 3 pedals the Boost side on the D&M Drive has more of the characteristics of a Tube Screamer. It was designed that way being the TS808 Mick’s favorite pedal. Basically he took the best part of the Klon Centaur and a TS808 and had a kid.
Great video Pete, (as always) I love OD's and combing them. Thank for doing a comparison of these pieces.
As an owner of kot and D&M drives, which are 2 brilliant overdrives I was really impressed with the Nobles Odr1 and I will be picking one up for sure, the king of tone is the only pedal that stays on my board the whole time because it is so versatile at first I was expecting it to stand out like other overdrive pedals, but it’s a type of pedal that makes your guitar and amp blend together and does the low gain to high gain beautiful don’t get me wrong the D&M drive is fantastic but there 2 different beast’s.
Beautiful tune, Pete. Love the 6/8 change.
Great vid Pete! Please don't burn out! I liked the Nobels best for low gain and the D&M for higher gain. I have the Nobels too but sometimes I find it's to muddy in the lowend on modern Fender amps. It sounds great on your amp though!
That's the same reason I don't like my ODR1, it's too muddy in the mids, I had to EQ it, whereas my Revival Drive sounds great on any setting. In this video, I prefer the D&M drive, I'll probably buy one and have a listen....
Inside the battery compartment is a bass cut on the nobles for higher gain.
Definitely the D&M Drive is my favourite... of course I love the KOT, but it's a lot easier to get a Keeley than an Analogman!
Great demo and terrific playing!!
Anyway the ODR1 is interesting as well...
Great demo as always, Pete! Keep on rockin', brother.
You will always be my favorite Pete. Stellar my man and the new album has been on repeat in the car for a few weeks now. Have an awesome day.
They all sound really great!
Thanks Kram Evangelista! Kind regards from the Nobels Team!
Amazing. Almost at the 'it's getting boring' and now you have a new studio!!!
Great demo. I’m glad your back, I’ve missed your reviews. Nobody does the jam track and real world studio use of a pedal like you. They either loop, or have a couple guys jam over a riff or a few chords.
they all sound great.. don’t think you can go wrong with anyone of these 😁👍🏽 great video Pete
Oh, I really like your explanations and your guitar playing.
Welcome back Pete! Killed it. And ... I like ALL of them. Or was that your tune and playing that just made them all sound great.? Ding Ding Ding !
Nobels ODR-1. Just sounded fuller+warmer on both low and high gain settings.
Thanks! Kind regards from the Nobels team - www.nobels.com
I much prefer the Nobels on both the low and higer gain setting! Im after a soft clipping OD without any nasaly mids (cant stand that stuff). This seems to be the one to go for for sure! Tanks Pete!
I’ve had the Nobels ODR-1 for many years now and actually moved on a King of Tone because of it. I use a BB Preamp and an ODR-1 in place of where the KOT was. The ODR-1 is used as the lower gain option however it does have a great compressed “polite” high gain sound
Man. They ALL sound fantastic. Great video.
Excellent shoot-out demo. I just bought a Nobels OB-1
