The most interesting takeaway from this shootout isn't "how close the bad monkey sounds to X pedal," but "how close all of these overdrive pedals sound to each other."

Also shootouts are just generally limited in scope because they can't show you every possible EQ setting and there's no apples to apples comparison in cases where... say one pedal has treble/bass controls and another just has a knob labelled "spectrum."

@@RudolfWolph More bands just simply means it's more versatile because you can dial way more tones. That's why the Bad Monkey can easily replicate tones from the other pedals which are mostly just single knob. If it were pitted to a pedal with 5-band EQ, it could take some more effort to dial especially with extreme settings.

I don’t want $650 for mine; I just want a used backup for $50 like they were last mfn week.

I feel that the newfound Bad Monkey craze was exact opposite of what Josh and guys wanted to achieve - the idea was to pick up your forgotten gear and just try it/experiment with it - instead of going shopping frenzy. That makes the humour in the video even better. That said, I need Josh to demo Hot Head distortion in the future 😂

@@Plunkcown I also happened on to a demo between the Klon and the Bad Monkey from 13 years ago. Same result - they sounds just alike. But that video didn’t go viral like Josh’s.

I've been fanatically advocating for the Bad Monkey for almost 15 years. It's an absolute beast sound-wise, construction-wise and versatility-wise, to the point that it has been the best OD I've had and I'm a bassist myself... Happy to see it being considered as it deserves, thanks for that!

They DO sound different, you have to remember this guy makes a living selling clones of famous very difficult to get pedals. Ask Josh to sell all oh his original issue vintage pedales, he'll never do it.
I could hear subtle differences between a few of them. The Zen sounded the most unique.

the point is that you don’t need a klon, zen drive, OR a bad monkey.
This was such a great video, demonstrative of the fact that it's more important to be able to dial in a tone than it is to get the right gear.
Morale of the story...All those pedals are so good that they can replicate even the Bad Monkey sound!!!! Amazing!!!

Not sure what to think of this video; nothing bad but there are many points to take in consideration:
-Josh usual nonchalance in showing that you can get great sounds with a cheap pedal, no need to buy expensive or JHS pedals, huge respect for that.
- Teaching people to learn how to use their equipment, this is one pedal and look how many sounds it is able to produce; the take away is learn how your pedal work before rushing to buy another one.
- The banana feast I did not know I was missing

This was my first pedal, I remember getting it because it was cheap and had heard that overdrive would get me a lot of sounds I wanted depending on how I setup my amp. It's been my go to for overdrive ever since and I'm happy to see it get some love almost 20 years after I bought it!
I really love your videos on so many levels! You're entertaining to watch and listen to, you have a wealth of knowledge on the subject and you can really play your butt off! I love your self-deprecating sense of humor!

Really goes to show how much more important your EQ and SPEAKER are compared to the actual pieces of gear that come before that.

Indeed. I was looking at one of these recently, to rrpksce my budget Ashton. Tube Screamer clone. It's a good pedal but ghe footprint is massive, and thd Monkey has better eq shaping options than a TS. I'll let the market settle again first. I'm in no hurry.

The most important thing is just to tweak what YOU HAVE until you find a great setting that works for you. Enjoy that sound. Write a song. And quit obsessing over stuff you don’t need or can’t afford. This is a personal note to myself.

I already have a Ceriatone Klone. Have been wanting to build a super simple board with a Morning Glory and a Fulltone Fulldrive and now I’m super happy I watched this. I listened to the whole video with my IEMs and cannot hear anything. It’s all about dialing in your sounds and the players fingers. Great video Josh. Also hilarious. 😂

Thanks to Tom Cram and you for the Billy Clements reference. Billy was one of my favorite people at DOD/Digi. We had a weekly golf game where he consistently beat me. He is also an incredible guitarist, and has an ear for tone that is second to none. He wrote a bunch of the best patches on the Digi processors. BTY the bad monkey is a kick ass pedal, and likely the most underrated pedal we ever made.
I used this pedal with my Blackstar HT-60 back in the early 2010's as a boost in front to get more gain. It was a great pedal then I bought for like $30 USD. I'm glad you brought this into the public consciousness. Too bad it's not a budget option anymore like it had been for me when I was aware of it..
I love this because it inspires me to use the random old pedals I have and find whatever cool tones I can. If Josh has fought me anything, it’s that you don’t need the fanciest toy, you need to make stuff you like
A friend on mine sells about £20k of guitars and gear to one customer: he’s chasing a dream, but he needs to learn to play 😂
This is extremely infuriating, if only bc it proves that you don’t always get what you pay for, and blindly following a trend often leads to bankruptcy 😂
I use a GT100 board, in part bc I swap between 12/6 string acoustic & a Tele so it does the job - especially powered of a small battery when busking!!

"I've lied to you, all the sounds in that video came from an SP5 Slam Punk pedal from the Ibanez Soundtank series".
I bought mine 10 years ago because I liked the fact that it had a separate bass and treble as opposed to the Ibanez Tube Screamer. I always felt it was highly underrated in comparison to other boutique pedals. Digitech made another pedal back then called the "Screamin' Blues" which was also great. My favorite overdrive pedal of all time still has to be the Radial Tonebone Classic. Some other favorites are the Bad Cat 2-Tone and the Snouse Black Box.

Like a lot of people, I bought a Bad Monkey after Phil X regularly used one for the Fretted Americana videos. You could pick them up, used, for £30 all day. It's an absolute workhorse and the BM EQ makes it super versatile. Guess these might go up in value now.. Phew, for once I already own a pedal which is about to get some Internet-fuelled inflation!

Great stuff guys! You always crush it with the content. The only possible difference that I could hear is that the Zen drive might have a little more volume than the Bad Monkey, but it' almost negligible.

I’ve told many a guitar buddy that I’m not an audiophile in the least. As I was working and not paying attention to the video, I didn’t know when it was switched from one pedal to another.
On a totally unrelated note; I’ve learned to use the morning glory in such a different way that I normally use. I crank the gain and push it with a blues driver. It does those Bon Scott era AC/DC riffs perfectly in my book.
Josh, your feel on the guitar is extremely good. Your style is neither flashy or obscene but yet conveys exactly what you are trying to get out of a pedal demonstration.
I was a kid and new to guitar when Scott Pilgrim came out. I remember seeing that shot of him stomping on the pedal and it instantly made me obsessed with the idea of guitar effects and pedals
Just got my first JHS pedal and it’s Morning Glory. I’m Happy. Plumes has similar sound, but it’s very high pitched, not possible to make it dark… Morning Glory has perfect size of grain… It works amazingly with my Hot Tubes and LPB-1.

The vibe I’m getting from the video is it doesn’t matter what overdrive pedal you have as long as you have all of them.

listened to this through my focusrite 4i4 into my sennheiser HD600 headphones. I literally could not tell a difference until it came to the zen drive and ODR1. even when it came to those 2 it was SUCH a minimal difference that having one light on in the room would cover that difference up.
I agree. Listening through Focusrite 2i2 and AKG K100 headphones. The TS-10 has maybe a tiny bit tighter lower mids whereas the Bad Monkey is a bit more open. And same goes for the zen drive. I've used many of the pedals in this demonstration in live settings and while the Bad Monkey was very good, the switch broke eventually - so I settled on a Boss OD-3 for longevity instead.
Did you take into account the amount of compression UA-cam puts on the audio before you started cork sniffing about audiophile lingo?
@@kidkique maybe check your internet connection before making assumptions about compression? A video with this many views will play back at the highest quality. And the above mentioned listening environments are among the most common and has nothing to do with cork sniffing or "audiophile lingo" as you call it.

Good timing for me - a friend just gave me a Bad Monkey that's been sitting in a garage for probably a decade. I didn't think it was anything special - I prefer the OCD or even DS1 - but now apparently I can sell it for 3x the price. Thanks JHS!
Using a Bad Monkey now for over 10 years, used it for my black metal phase back in the early 2010s and now use it for my more indie rock stuff. Great pedal, and solid built. Probably never going to replace it.

Wow, so I bought this pedal last year after searching for the pedals used in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. I was years too late to get a Super Fuzz but getting a Bad Monkey when the price was dirt cheap because of my love for that movie has been incredible.

The Zen Drive was great transparent, The Bad Monkey was close to the sound, I look over at mine on the shelf and I am happy. My Bad Monkey I had modified a little less noise and a switch for more bottom end. I use it for power chords. Josh might know what things sound like as he builds pedals. I like it!

The BAD MONKEY is a CLASSIC!
I Have'd one on my board for the last 10 YEARS influenced by PHIL X back in the day when he used to do demos for FRETTED AMERICANA.
It's basically a TUBE SCREAMER with a BASS CONTROL, VERY TWEAKABLE , a bit more noisy but normal for the price .

No he really is, these were like $60-$80 on eBay a week ago and now people are asking $100-$300
@@oz4689 thats a lot of influence and power in the market. Manufacturers beware! At the same time he also exposes how the pedal market charges big dollars for a tone circuit that can be copied for very cheap with great results. So I'd say he is more of a disrupter than an influencer, but in a good way!
I promise that's not a good thing. Some of us would still like some gear to remain obtainable. These videos are cool don't get me wrong, but I'd like to able to buy gear without shelling out almost all of my money
@@CannabisChrist agreed its a double edged sword. Props to him exposing the hype/high cost of "boutique" pedals and tears them down with a budget pedal. Goes to show that the effect pedal industy is ALL HYPE.
What's in it for Josh and JHS? UA-cam Ad revenue, promotion of their channel/business, and I'm sure some sort of kickback deal (not all but most) from the manufacturer's featuring their pedals.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is one of my favorite movies! So many great lines! I never noticed the Bad Monkey pedal. Great catch. Funny enough, Beck was behind that soundtrack comp and the realization of the Sex Bob-omb songs, and after this video, a Honda advert featuring Beck’s "E-Pro" played!

I have owned 2 Bad Monkeys, one which I still have and use. LOVE this pedal! One thing you didn't share is the Mixer output that enables the pedal to be used as an amp-in-a-box. I've used it this way myself directly into mixing board for recording. It's awesome! Also, I heard no distinguishable difference in any of these shoot outs. Now I've got to find this movie! Awesome video, Josh! Thanks for giving the due credit this great pedal deserves!
That Mixer Out is the main reason I bought the Bad Monkey so long ago. It was a very affordable way to run direct/quiet stage and not sound like a typical guitar run through a headphone out jack. It's kind of the sleeper feature of the Bad Monkey (and a couple other Digi pedals).
Can you explain this more? I have some Digitech pedals and have no idea what the mixer output is for.

@@backlogbuddies you just send your signal via cable into mixer, whether for recording or live. No amp needed. I've only used it this way in a recording situation, but I've watched a few videos on UA-cam where guys actually ran it direct live when an amp was not available. The mixer out has a 'cab sim,' and it works even when off for better clean tones than just direct.

Your channel is great, and your band is great! I have a Fulldrive, and I like it a lot. I bought it after having dinner with Mike Fuller in LA. He told me that the Zendrive is based on his pedal (I cannot verify this). All of the pedals in your shootout sound alike to me.
Killer comparisons, but most of all, the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack is epic. One of the few soundtracks I bought on cd, back when we bought stuff like that.
