  • In this video we remove the intake manifolds from a Mercedes-Benz OM642 diesel. We get right up to the point of removing the oil cooler. All that is left would be physically removing the cooler to replace the seals, which is only 10 bolts and very easy to do.

    Thank you for this super in depth video! Even with all the space it seems like a chaotic job, on my w212 theres is barely any space to even breathe around there, dreading the day when those intakes will have to come out, hopefully not anytime soon! Glad that they sorted those oil cooler seals on the newer versions. But will definitely save this video as its so in depth, great job man!

      Definitely very informative, one of the better videos out there. Were you able to record a video putting it together? 👍🏻

      @ehodgson1674 unfortunately no. Time got tight and I had to get it together asap. Which frustrates me because there was a lot more information I would have loved to share. Next one I get, I'll take it apart asap and do the reassembly video.

    I did this job a couple weeks ago over here in the UK. My life would have been much easier had I known this video existed as this video it is specific to the model that I have not just any other vehicle with an OM642. I did mix-up those Turbo bolts with the exhaust downpipe bolts and I had smoke coming out of the engine. I had smoke soot all over the engine after driving the car! I replaced the oil cooler seals but another mistake I made was not replacing the "Intake Shutoff Actuator Motor" as 2 weeks later, that motor died and now I have to open her up again! 😢

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  11 місяців тому +1

      We usually don't replace the intake port shutoff actuator when we do that job. If it's working, it gets reinstalled. It just happened to go out on you. I've seen Sprinters burn down because those bolts get swapped. The process is basically the same for all OM642 engines. Slight differences depending on the year. Some have a slightly different intake tube design, SUVs can be different also. I'm glad you got it sorted. At least when you replace the actuator, it will be quicker the second time around.

      For the moment I have installed a resistor on that swirl flap motor connector. A mod that I’ve came across on forums so the car came out of limp mode.
      It drives almost as normal except fuel economy seems poor!
      Have you heard of this mod before?

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  11 місяців тому

      @charliebounced no I haven't heard of that modification. Seems like a good idea to keep the check engine light off. How much has your fuel economy dropped?

    • @charliebounced
      @charliebounced 11 місяців тому +1

      @@FriendlyMBTech Fuel economy is about 15.1 mpg when driving around town but normal on the highway, about 28mpg.

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  11 місяців тому

      @charliebounced that still seems a bit low. I've driven an ML diesel overnight and got more than 30mpg, I want to say it was closer to 35mpg. That was no traffic, though.

    What a GREAT 👍 video. I have 2015 GL350 - exactly the same with all the details. Thank You!!!
    Question: where is the putting it back together, as promised at the end of the video?

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  7 днів тому

      @Ayzaf1 Thank you! I have not been able to source a vehicle that I can do the reinstallation video on. This vehicle became a time crunch and I wasn't able to record that. As soon as I get a vehicle that needs oil cooler seals, I'll record it.

    You emptied the coolant, but did you empty the oil also? Or is it better to empty and replace the oil after finishing?

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  8 місяців тому +1

      We do oil changes after the repair in case something gets in the oil passages. I've had situations where a lot of coolant came out of the ports even after draining it. Enough to where it filled the valley. When you take the oil cooler out, there are just open oil and coolant ports so you don't want anything getting in there.

    how do you remove the exhaust to egr pipe. at 29:5 in your video. the side connected to the exhaust.

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  5 місяців тому

      @timlin254 there are two fairly long bolts securing it to the head, depending on your model, the turbo side is either that clamp, or two smaller bolts. Once those are removed it comes right out.

    • @FriendlyMBTech
      @FriendlyMBTech  5 місяців тому

      @timlin254 the clamp has a small torx bolt, could be E10 or possibly E8.
