      Is there any difference in the gen1 vs gen2 stock intake manifolds? Gen 2 runs higher boost on stock tune so just curious. Also, when you say you tracked your car with certain setups. . are you talking drag strip or road course? Thanks for sharing the data!

      Nice video! What about if you plug the coolant tank and the intake. Because you remove the highest point to bleed the air, could there air be trapped in the intake and effect iat temps? i'm going to install my intake next Friday and it would be nice to block the cooland line off!

    @kern417 The coolant tank delete plug seals the intercooler water tank, where and how did you delete the other side? Remove the hose completely that runs over the intercooler? When I look at pics from my engine bay (I have no access to my F22 M240i at the time I watch your video), there seems to be a connector where the metal hose from the intercooler converts to a rubber hose which goes up to the intercooler water tank, can I seal it there? Thank you for your videos! 😊

      I inspected that same return hose my self on my 540i with the Gen 1 and I believe the stock manifold is not capable of block off since the hose connects to the manifold but the piece that routes into the intercooler is not removable. I believe you must upgrade your manifold in order to block off the return hose.

    Is there any benefit to running an aftermarket heat exchanger + intercooler? Most of the data I see is people upgrading Hx only which is frustrating. The aftermarket options seem to have less dense fins and height at the exchange of making them thicker. This would be for a track car.

    • @zazxazza
      @zazxazza 16 днів тому

      Track Supra guys recorded logs and found that if anything, CSF’s heat exchanger increased water temperature compared to stock. Track guys run stock heat exchangers.
      The drag guys run the PWR since it has 4 passes and works well. Some guys run Forge since it has a higher coolant capacity and is 3 pass.

    • @kern417
      @kern417  16 днів тому

      intercooler lowers IATs. Heat exchanger decreases recovery time so temps drop faster after a pull and reduces heat soak.

  • @leomedway1067
    @leomedway1067 16 днів тому +1

    Hi Kevin, just wanted question the data a little bit. How did you exactly measure the efficiency of each manifold when there isn't a temp sensor running on manifolds. B58 gen1 has MAF/temp sensor on the intake, and another temp sensor on the charge pipe. No air temps can be measured past the charge pipe. Same story with gen2. In fact what we need is a temp sensor post the core in the intercooler to measure delta between charge pipe and temp post intercooler core. That would be amazing but we don't have these as of yet.

    • @universalg_
      @universalg_ 16 днів тому

      IATs are not determined through the MAF sensor. Air past the compressor is probs around 300 degrees Fahrenheit and the intake manifold cools it to 30-40 degrees beyond ambient. Which I think the temp of air is calculated once it runs through the intercooler

    • @kern417
      @kern417  16 днів тому +4

      The map sensor on the manifold is a tmap sensor. It measures both temperature and pressure after the intercooler on both gen 1 and gen 2.

    • @leomedway1067
      @leomedway1067 16 днів тому

      @kern417 sorry Kevin, that's is incorrect, a MAP sensor for a b58 as listed by bmw does not measure tempreture, furthermore, it's a 3 wire sensor, 5v ref, ground, and signal. Signal voltage designates pressure, there is graph for voltage vs pressure, not tempreture with bmw documentation. Your channel is very informative and useful, but this is completely false information and is not backed by any evidence. I can give u links to BMW TIS to review what a manifold absolute pressure sensor functional description which lists exactly what it does and how it functions.
      Please correct this so our community is not mislead.

    • @leomedway1067
      @leomedway1067 16 днів тому

      @@universalg_my point is, there is a temp sensor on the charge pipe indicating temp entering the manifold. However, on ALL B58s there is no temp sensors on the manifold it self, only a pressure sensor which does not measure temps. So how can this video claim differences in IATs and change manifolds and claim that is lowered IAT when he cannot possibly measure what a manifold does after the air went past the cooling core? There is no temp sensor after the cooling core. It's makes no sense.

    • @kern417

Confusing to me, supposedly a reputable tuner too making it strange, did I miss something perhaps?

    • @andrxito
      @andrxito День тому

      gen 1 b58 yes you need to upgrade fueling
      gen 2 b58 no need
      running e85 on stock fueling on either is not gonna go well.
      getting the most out of the hybrid turbo then yes, upgrade fueling. only pump
      you dont need ethanol to get to 480hp, and the risks that it adds to a daily driver are not worth the hassle

    Im curious about something, Im sure the IAT ready are after being cooled with the manifold but does an aftermarket air intake impact those readings? Assuming I keep my A90 Supra, I may tune on stock turbo, MSTV2 intake, RK exhaust and may order a downpipe(possibly catted). At this point and with those upgrades, Im not sure if moving to an aftermarket Intake manifold will be worth money wise.

    Are there companies that make plastic ones that handle more boost? That seems to be the best solution to me anyway. Why aren't the metals manifolds designed as a passive heatsink also, like the plastic OE?.
    Metal is so inefficient at dissipating heat. But I suppose the larger core compensates.

    • @kern417
      @kern417  16 днів тому

      no and i wouldn't expect anyone to invest in it

    • @notfst
      @notfst 13 днів тому +1

      What gave you the idea that metal is inefficient at dissipating heat? Are your radiator fins made of plastic? Your HVAC condenser?
      The IAT's are higher after being parked because the metal is significantly more conductive both ways. That residual heat in the engine bay makes its way into the coolant through the metal casing.
      A solution to this would be to insulate the manifold, or have cooling after the car is turned off.

    • @Flip_Angle
      @Flip_Angle 13 днів тому

      @notfst didn't know that. I got the impression that IAT went up with the metal intercooler vs the factory .

      I stand corrected by remnantperformance after a long discussion, and figuring out differences between US and Australian spec. US spec does have a 4 wire system. Which does measure temps. However, we do have some vehicle were we are, Australian spec that do not run a temp sensor and run a 3 wire system for measuring pressure only. However, what I've said above is not applicable to US cars and I just wanted to clarify this.
