This is incredible.. please keep posting these underrated matches. 10/10 edit. Well done
I remember this day 13 years ago. It was Friday and we had probably one of the best semi finals ever. Soderling Gonzalez/ Federer Del Potro. 4 icons of aggressive tennis playing on biggest stage of clay. And they delivered. 2 Roller Coasters.
I think 2012 Aus open had incredible semi-finals and if I wasn't mistaken it was in 2 days semi final each day.
Which made RG 2009 semi-finals even more special.
Now I'm going to search for Delpo Federer thanks to you :)

Even better, two classic 5 setters and it all ended before 9PM which was hugely important as FO had no lights back in 2009. The crowd really got their moneys worth that day. Probably one of the best slam semifinal days in tennis history! Soderling really deserved one FO title but got outplayed big time in both finals that he reached despite beating the defending champion along the way both times.

Gonzo was close to winning this match! Bad calling from the umpire/linespeople. What’s the purpose of calling over the linesperson when, as the umpire, can overrule it! Great match between these two though.

Where was Gonzalez's forehand during this match? really looked like he was struggling to get the speed or depth on it he usually does. Normally when it goes to his forehand he hits a winner 😂 Can anyone explain? he pushed it to 5 sets even so, sounds like because of his serve, and surprisingly good backhand on the day

Gonzo used too much slice backhand for his own good; if his backhand was as good as forehand, and better mental calm- he could have won several majors. Spanish underachievers are always fun: Nalbandian, Gonzo, Rios, Verdasco

Hazte ver 🤣
