      He was at his best in 2009. And also in 2011 when he almost lost, and on other years. Many times proven he is beatable. Beatable, but hard task, and if the player who has the chance does not believe in it, like Del Potro, or Djok, or Isner, then you lose the opportunity and the confidence of the court return to this very very good player. The Swede had proper mentality when he was on great day.

  • @ElReyDeClay

    You just know 09 ate at him for an entire year. He had something to prove for sure and he went flawless that clay season, attaining the first ever clay slam (all 3 clay masters & RG). All the 5 set dramatics at AO and some physical epics with Novak during that clay season really took their toll on him in 09. But he was so much fresher in 2010 and moving so much better and almost as aggressive as his godly 08 RG campaign. When he's on, healthy and motivated, its like going up against a tornado. Soderling was no slouch though, he'd fry pan the crap out of those balls. It was awesome to see Rafa rise to the occasion, from the ashes anew, quiet the doubters and start off a 5peat.

    • @michelez715
      @michelez715 3 роки тому +23

      If you read Rafa's autobiography, you'll know that travelling back from the AO, his father told him he and Rafa's mum were separating. Also you know from the book that his family means everything to him. The news devastated Rafa, it took him many, many months to recover his emotional equilibrium, and I'm convinced it played a large part in his defeat by Soderling. He just wasn't his usual self, mentally.

    • @ElReyDeClay
      @ElReyDeClay 3 роки тому +6

      @@michelez715 True. That was definitely another major factor. That definitely destabilized him and took away his focus: his family life instantly turning upside down on him. Just seemed like a confluence of things went against him that year, which sucked. At least it made 2010 all the more sweeter I guess.

      @@ElReyDeClay They’ve gotten a bit better about this more recently, but they always talked about his defense. That’s all. They acted like he was talentless and brainless but since he “tries hard” and is fast, that’s why he’s great. In reality, and as we’ve seen especially these last few years, Nadal is one of the most aggressive baseliners ever. He bullies guys around the court, he rarely misses when he’s attacking because his strength allows him to attack with margin, he’s an absolute machine at net, and I’d argue he’s the best tactician of all time. The reality is, he’s more well-rounded than Djokovic and probably even Federer. He has the best mix of offense and defense of all time. Hell, on clay he’s probably both the best offensive player and the best defensive player of all time. That’s how good he is. The only things that have held him back are his serve (which he’s fixed) and injuries.

Soderling has to be the unluckiest player. He was finally coming off age, making it to to Q/F of almost all slams in 2009-11 period before he was forced to retire prematurely due to glandular fever at the age of 26-27. If not for this notorious fever he would have definitely nicked couple of slams in next few years since he was not a one surface wonder and he was performing well even on grass and hard courts.

A year later, he faces Federer in the semifinals, defeats him and goes to the final against Rafa Nadal and he retaliates for his defeat in the semifinals by the Swede.
