Kyrgios possessed the greatest raw talent of any player including the big 3 IMO. Unfortunately, he doesn't have any of the other hallmarks needed for the success they accomplished. The passion, tenacity, and willpower. If he'd have worked as hard as them, he really could have been unstoppable. Oh well, at least we got to see a sliver of brilliance from him.

This is all too true. I have been a tennis instructor at a high level academy in Irvine for many years. I have seen the most insanely talented players get passed by the most untalented, unathletic, but highly motivated players over and over again. I can guarantee that Kyrgios works very hard. You cannot get to that level without hard work, but there are levels within levels to tennis. I think Kyrgios' biggest downfall is his mental fortitude, or lack there of.
He all too often allows how he is feeling in any particular moment to dictate how he is performing. That is not a trait that will result in greatness, unfortunately for Nick.

@@Vince6323 May seem pedantic, and I don't mean it that way, but I think the issue ISN'T that he's driven by how he's feeling, it's that he's seemingly unable to convert any negativity into motivation for greater performance.
I found it interesting that Novak suffered somewhat from a similar issue earlier in his career, where he would get quite a hangdog expression and seem discouraged and dejected. Later? Next to no evidence of that, rather he appeared to have found a trick to make temporary setbacks or frustrations serve as prods to greater performance in response.
Even Roger was quite volatile and emotional early on. I remember him saying a 5 set loss to Hewitt in a Davis Cup match when he had been up 2-0 was a fundamental moment for him as it showed him the difference between sheer talent and sheer will, and combining the two would lead to lasting greatness. Either one wasn't enough; Hewitt was more will than talent, although obviously not short of it as he'd been the youngest No. 1, but not talent of the sort of the big 3 or Nick.
Nick just hasn't made that change; some might call it 'matured', but I think it's not the same as that.
      Cheers

@@steeltrap3800 I appreciate your gracefulness in expressing your differing opinion. It's rare to find in a UA-cam comment section.
I do, however, disagree with you on how this dynamic plays into the game of tennis, and the success of a player. These examples show how emotion, positive or negative, almost always adversely effects a players performance. Each of these top players you mentioned reached their peak level of performance when they were able to wield a high level of stoicism, eliminating emotion as a variable as much as possible.
Tennis is a game with an incredible amount of variables that dictate outcomes. The technical aspect of tennis is among the highest of any sport, including golf, yet the physical aspect is equally prevalent, as well as strategical, mental, and emotional. Tennis is a sport with no time limit, and even if you have won or lost every single point prior, the outcome is still undetermined. This adds for an incredible need for mental stability and focus.
Allowing negative OR positive emotions to settle can cloud your shot selection, as well as cause your form to falter. Negative emotion often causes a player to become overly aggressive with shot selection, trying to win back your sense of dominance over the other player, instead of making precise and calculated plays. Typically this manifests as a player attempting to end points before they are well earned, simply by "hitting big." Inversely, positive emotion, i.e.: feeling like you are the dominant player, can often lead to a player feeling as though he can coast through the rest of the match, and allowing your opponent to claw their way back into the match. We see this often in tennis with back and forth sets.
Playing with a sense of stoicism allows you to play to your strengths, methodically and with patience, regardless of the circumstances. I would agree that motivation and will are always a benefit, but do not require an emotional charge. They are closely tied to mental discipline. That is my philosophy on the subject.

lol, so much cope. Kyrgios is a once in a generation talent (not a third in a generation) who never realised his enormous potential, but he had Djokovic’s number almost every time they played. Even the first set of that final at Wimbie, when focussed and relaxed Kyrgios was unplayable and made even Nole look very average: even the greats couldn’t cope with his power, speed and court IQ. Unfortunately for Nick genius often comes with a touch of madness, and that, not anybody else contemporaneous to him on the tour, is what held him back.
Your guy got more Grand Slams than anybody else. Be happy with that. Kyrgios is a freak of nature, just genetically the most perfect tennis player, probably ever!

He is so good, I think, because he doesn't try to influence everything. He just plays the way he wants and it works because he's having fun. (And of course some talent and training). He doesn't limit himself, nor does he want to achieve anything “too much”. For many players, every game is “all on the line” - all the training, time, effort in training, etc. You can't lose, it would all be for nothing - just being first means something. If he loses, he doesn't care in the long run. He doesn't invest much time and therefore doesn't lose much. He can live the flow that can arise from his ease. If someone like him were forced to work like everyone else, I think he would become worse because of the frustration and restriction. He would also quickly lose interest in the sport and/or not be able to deal with it psychologically.

Very seldom could he put together 2 good matches in a row. He made it to 2022 Wimbledon final due Nadal's injury and could not play against Djokovic at all. These current 2 matches one in Acapulco and the other in Indian Wells were fantastic tennis by Kyrgios. His potential was immense. Could have easily been "numero uno" on ATP-s list.
