A player of genuine class. Not sure if he could have been quite at the top but could certainly have had a career on a par with the likes of Wawrinka. A badly missed contender.
wawrinka eviscerates soderling ffs. 4 grand slam finals, 3 different tournaments, won 3 seperate slams lmao, wawrinka vs murray in terms of grand slams, he dicks andy too hahahhaha roshan sreedhar is a weird nonce
@@ketan6182 No he's not! Anybody would be rather called "Former Top 20 in the world" than "Roland Garros commentator" as if he had never played tennis! lol
I watched that wonderful match he played against Nadal at the French Open in 2009 and you could sense that Robin was going to win that match. Those forehand ground strokes were just astounding. I don't know how Rafa could've stayed on the court when they were coming his way but Soderling utilized his fantastic forehand to such a great extent that he made history that day. I wish him well and I hope he's getting healthier. Thx Robin!
@bitterboi31 TBF it's impossible to beat Rafa at the French Open, that is a huge achievement that no one besides maybe Djokovic could do. Beating Rafa at the French Open is worth about 5 grand slams.
@@mpa1931 No it isn't. Dude you have to win 6 matches to get to a grand slam final. Many players would have choked in the next match after beating Rafa. Same in 2010 you have to win 6 matches to get to a slam final. And after beating Federer(He says it is his greatest achievement. He maybe right) he didn't choke. And winning masters 1000 title in Paris and surpassing Murray to become world no.4 is the cherry on top. Soderling is the greatest player to never win a grand slam.
Such a shame he never made it back to the tour. I can't remember which journalist but someone gave the quote when he officially retired that Soderling was someone who was unafraid of the top players when the rest of the tour were.
It's sad what happened to Robin. His rise and peak was like a comet that burned out after just a little over 2 years. People may not have liked his attitude, but he was a damn good player. And imagine if he hadn't gotten mono. Magnus Norman would probably still be working with him, instead of Stan. And Stan probably doesn't have the belief that he is good enough and doesn't have 3 majors now. Funny how stuff happens.
10-4 winning h2h against ferrer 7-3 winning h2h against berdych 5-0 winning h2h against tsonga one of a handful of players to beat rafa and novak in the same tournament
I use RS Paris Octagon, tac grip n i love the stuff...Playing some great tennis RS products. My coach was in Atlanta earlier 2020 n met Robin n brought me a signed can of tennis balls with Soderling’s autograph on the can.
An unanswered question in tennis he could've had some major success. I'd say Wawrinka kind of success, he definitely had the talent to win a slam or two.
as brilliant as he was against nadal in RG 2009, I have to say his best ever performance was against Federer in RG 2010. the level he played at in that match was frightening, even better than when he beat nadal the previous year in my opinion. I thoroughly recommend anyone who hasn't watched it to do so.
From what I know, Soderling was not a player that was liked in the locker room. But he was definitely a formidable player and it's too bad he had to retire early.
If Del Potro had less injuries, he could've won around 4-5 majors, yes even in the big 4 era. Soderling had firepower and grit, but Delpo was on another level most of the time
What a shame. Let this be a lesson to all up and coming pros. Take care of yourself and don't overtrain/play too much. Listen to your body. He should have taken a long break after Wimbledon.
You're right. Just like when Roger kept playing despite having mono back in 2008. Yes, the doctors gave him the green light, but he still should've listened to his body.
I actually remember reading something a while ago when Roger said he learned about overtraining from what happened to Mirka. She pushed herself through an injury and had to retire because of it. I think if the doctors gave him the green light in 2008 he was probably good to play, iirc they didn't know he had mono until he recovered from it.
Lol. Nobody talks about the fact that he beat Federer in 2010 reach the french open final again. Infact he once said it is his greatest achievement. I strongly believe he saved Federer's legacy. Otherwise Federer would have lost to Nadal 7 times in a row(2005-2011) at Roland Garros and would never complete the career grand slam.
Mmmm... Nadal was not his best in much of 09. Fed has beaten Nadal on clay, I know he was pushed by Haas & Delpo but given Nadal was apparently somewhat injured and dealing with some mental health stuff, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say Fed could've beaten Rafa in 09... altho at the end of the day, who knows, winning consecutive best of 5 slam matches to win a slam, even in a weaker era is still an achievement (always hyper competitive in pro tennis) and never a fluke as much as some people claim
@@Dman9fp You are underestimating Soderling. He has this weird game which troubled Nadal hugely in the 4th Round in 2009. And he executed it perfectly that day. the most underrated player of all time bar none. My friends are all big tennis fans and they can't even remember his name even though he is one of the best players of the last 15 years.
Who in their right mind would have their bed 10 meters away from the bathroom? by the time you reach the bathroom door in the middle of the night, you'd have peed on yourself.
i'm telling you. this guy was a cut above berdych, cilic, ferrer, tsonga etc. he even overtook murray in the world rankings and beat him several times. he was the best thing outside of the prime big 3. if wawrinka can win 3 slams with soderlings coach, then soderling would have won several majors.
No because you don't have to stop, dropping stays a few months and goes, and you play better after it wears off. And mono is very serious and can have great effect.
OK, is everyone in the video ignorant or are they just putting on an act? Nadal got I-N-J-U-R-E-D in the Rome semis vs Djokovic in that grueling 4-hour classic. He basically LIMPED OFF to Paris in a semi-fit condition. It was just a matter of time until he'd lose a match in that shape, and Soderling was just the kind of quality player who was good enough to beat an INJURED Rafa.
More circumstantial evidence that Soderling "beat" an injured Nadal at FO 2009 i.e. didn't really defeat him: 1 - Nadal had beaten the Swede just a month earlier on clay 6-1 6-0 2 - Then, the following year in the 2010 FO finale, Nadal again beat him easily 3-0 3 - Then again at the FO in 2011, Nadal won easily 3-0 4 - He also beat Soderling at the 2006 FO, 3-0 5 - Rafa canceled Wimbledon Any more questions? I just watched the highlights again of the epic match soderling vs nadal...hell no, nadal was perfectly fine . soderling was too overpowered that day. and I still remember that nadal almost always used to take injury time out whenever his matches were in trouble as gamemanship till I think 2010
