Excellent tutorial. I always found the combat in Total War to be very complex. The controls feel a little bit clunky and unwieldy, units aren't very responsive but in the case of total war this absolutely makes sense. In real ancient battles, it was a big chaotic confusing mess. Generals attempted to lead troops to the right positions, then set them loose in the right direction and hope it worked out. However, setting up and engaging in the proper formation in the proper order with the proper terrain can drastically alter the outcome. I've been losing the first major siege mission in the vanilla campaign a few times and after watching this tutorial i beat it on the next go. Thank you much, sir!
what you mean like shift right click one enemy or area then right click another area or unit and when they are finished they will move on to next action in que???

Great video. Mate. I've been playing this game. All week yet haven't figured out how to walk in formation. Is it better to walk/Run at units in formation and have them attack automatically in formation? Or is it better to control manually and select a unit for each unit to attack once you are close enough?
+Ozblock1 Yes, you must brake the locked formation in order to attack manually and chose a target for each unit. If you don't they will just all attack the same one and get entangled and blob as we call it in total war, where only 5% fight, the other 95% stand behind and do nothing.
why would you not want your archers to be as close to the back of your missile troops as possible? That just gives the enemy more distance to get closer without taking fire
Because archers have a small window of time during a battle to be effective, and having them not fire at the same time reduces that effectiveness even more.

on the right side of the UI, at the bottom bellow the map you have time control options. You can pause, speed up, slow down, but you can't move anything in pause. You can just give orders or activate abilities while paused.
Hello Nine Tailed Fox, and welcome to my channel. When you say a fort, you mean when an enemy army is encamped and erects a temporary wooden fort with a palisade and tends in the middle? You have to use fire arrows to burn down the wooden palisade and make a larger opening to attack with your units. But it would be best if you can bring onager (catapult) and fire at the units inside the fort until they lose morale and towers.
@@BTClips522 Ah, ok, for that you definitely need catapults to take down walls and create openings to attack with your best units. You can use the battering rams to take the defenders attention to another side of the "fort" so they don't all set up at the place where you will attack. Before you attack you need to use spies to poison the city and reduce it's soldiers and also to siege it for a few turns so they lose their numbers even more.
@@BTClips522 you need units with high melee attack rate and damage to kill off enemy units fast and get into the city. Spearmen are slow at attacking. Use sword and axe units.
Hello Rhett and welcome to my channel. There is a very simple answer to that. Because archers can always get behind the front infantry line. Now, cavalry is most effective at attacking into the backs of the units as they can deal more physical damage and maximum morale damage. If a cavalry unit attacked in front, it would not be able to get to the archers before they hid behind the swords and shields. Those infantry units are twice as numerous as the cavalry units so the cavalry unit can't win in 1vs1 at the front line. So the cavalry goes to the flanks in the hope it can get behind the enemy army charge into the backs deal damage and brake morale because of that huge morale penalty units get if attacked into the backs. Hence, spearman have to be at the flanks to protect flanks and back of your army.

So how do I play a "unfair battle" I basically want to do a fort defense, a group of 3 pretoria units against 15 naked man, but the game won't allow me because "a player has spend a lot on their army configuration" and no matter if I add more units to the roman side that message doesn't disappear.

I'm playing on a laptop and absolutely can not move my troops. In Rome Total War you simply press contol+mouse and as long as your holding control you can control units. Here I can't even tell a unit to walk forward. Please help
So I need a mouse to control each unit like the original version? i.e expand, make diagonal formations and tell individual units to attack and everything?
hey i got rome 2 since a few days but how can i follow a unit and make a camera view that looks like first person and automatically follow the unit wich button do i need to use this command???
