The pikes require that your whole plan revolves around them. If you're using pikes in an army than all the other units are in their service. Cavalry to protect their backs for enemy charges and range units to protect them from missile fire. The pikes themselves are like a steamroller you point them in a direction and just wait for them to go over everything.

Very good, thanks for the help and tips! Not sure on some of the negativity towards these videos. For me, as a beginner to this series of games. I was pleased for the beginner tips video, for there were things in it that I wasn't aware of. The advanced videos have helped give me some ideas of what is potentially possible, will I used them to the letter? Probably not, but it certainly helped open my mind up to the possibilities of what I can do in my battles. Ha, I was convinced that 'say hello to my little friend' was going to be a cheeky flagpole exploit/cheat. I shall watch for these hole creation manoeuvres when I make it to multi-player.

@@perafilozof Thanks for that advice. Soooo...I just tried my first "large" battle with 20 units plus 8 reinforcements and man, it is hard to manage that many for me so far. Much chaos, and I had to retry it 3 times and still got just Phyrric Victories every time. You make it look REAL EASY hahah. So another question here is, do you ever have your unit pathing just plain NOT follow orders and kind of head off to a map edge with a mind of it's own? That happened to me even before engaging the enemy! Any settings I'm missing? Cancel Reply
Hi, I think I know what probably happened. Did you have that unit in a group? As they will try to keep their original spacing at the moment they became a group so they will have horrible individual paths when your order the whole group to move. That or the until was routing and came back?

Again, great work! I will re watch this bideo a couple more times to really get the gist of each attack type. Question: regarding attack #1 would this be a good time to place your cavalry in diamond formation in order to slip through the center gap more easily?
Any formations locks in the unit and makes clipping (getting stuck attacking) much more prevalent. So just use a custom formation fitting the hole in enemy lines.
I think these tactics work only for formation attack units because when you click the attack order they will stay in shapes but if you click the attack order for non-formation attack units they will spread out.
Hello and welcome to my channel. Units which are not locked in manula formations all converge on the attack point. But in formation they don't attack well because they run into instead of charging. The point of the formations is to move the army in a a way which prevents chaos just before battle. Chaos during battle it unavoidable. Which is why you have to unlock formations once you are in charging range.

So now i understand the concept of battle abit better after watching all your videos. But now you left me with a unit i don't know where to put, the mighty pikemen? So i exchange my Melee infantry for pikes, or do i exchange my Spear infantry for pikes? Also factions like Sparta have NO melee infantry. So yea the question is what unit to switch out for pikes.
These are all nice ideas but trying to do your surround on any cav that is good eg praetorian cav from rome and it wont work. Also if someone is playing with pikes or hoplites they wont open gaps in there line as they will be happy sitting there while those units that did get in combat win against those units that you have charged.
Units can attack each other if they are close enough without orders. So even if you give an order to attack one unit, but the formation is soo wide that it goes into another unit it will engage both enemy units at the same time. Each horseman fights the enemy soldier that is in his reach.

Ofc, these are just examples of what you can do. They require certain conditions. Just like any maneuver they have their uses in specific situations.

Only works if you outnumber them
That is what Romans thought... before Hannibal showed them the error of their ways.
Hannibal didnt have unit cards and was able flank them, these tactics wouldnt work in Rome 2
