You can construct the barricade in the entrance to the fort so the enemy would have to destroy it first. This also means that there will be another walls behind the first due to the "units" lenght. If you then place any Hoplite unit right behind the first barricade it becomes unbreakable. Not only can the enemy not break down the wall to attack you, because they get into spearrange of the units BEHIND the Wall. And even (with considerable spam) the first wall breaks (never happended to me) there is a Second wall with exactly the same properties. In addition your Hoplites are now also immune to missiles because of the enorme hitbox of the barricade. Stones cant hit your troops while arrows and spears just get stuck in the air just above the barricade and your troops...no matter the angle! This is an insane cheesy tactic and i really wounder why I have never seen this before from anyone. Warning! Can make your campaign insanely dull because small armys can dislodge any number of foes attacking.
Probably because a shocking number of players dont seem to know about the stance mechanic at all, if all the tips and tricks and campaign guides can be believed
Another good tip is to place your general in a thin line directly behind the wall, next to the main entrance, ( Especially when fighting slingers / javelin). the AI will target him with priority and dump all their ammo into the wall
3:19 I just discovered you, this single phrase mean for me that your are at least an advanced player. ("Position your archers to shot there unprotected side")
Pikes and better spears are the best in chokepoints.. I've won so many battles in towns without walls and forts using these setups and flanking tactics with cavalry once things develop. Archers and Javelin-men are great in these situations since they can shoot over the heads of your defending troops.
@@TotalWarfare I quite agree.. but some of the battles I've been in (very heavily outnumbered) I couldn't sally out of my protected space to do that without getting mobbed. But when things are a tad less 'crazy', you are exactly right. I love slingers in general. (if only they had mounted slingers ;) ) This game entranced me like the original Rome did.. and I was a big fan of the original Medieval. I've played many of the other Total War games.. but Rome 2 is an all time fave for me.
A tip for you. If you are playing multiplayer campaign the wall and towers are destructible so you can destroy everything if you want, or a part of it and flank attack the defenders
Glad you liked it! I too hope Rome 3 will happen at some point. Rome 2 is still 2nd/3rd most played TW game even after 11 years so there's a good argument for CA to revive it
If Rome 2 modders were able to add more settlements like in Rome Remastered then it would truly be the perfect game + DEI. Im the type of person that likes world conquests but in rome 2 there so quick only a few weeks. I want a months long campaign lol. I think Medieval 3 is more needed than rome 3 though. Medieval 3 would sky rocket CA back to a good spot. with the game being this modern compared to its 20 year old predecessorit will be impossible for it to flop
When flanking, drop them out of formation attack (the icon with the square and the X through it) so they can "blanket" around and cover them from all angles in the attack. If I see that a crowd of enemies are retreating, I like to position one of my ranged units in their path so that they will start bashing the retreating enemy as they pass. It is like getting passive captures/kills with little to no effort. I like to keep my soldiers in formation as long as humanly possible and thus if time is on my side, I will simply march them right up against the enemy, this will cause my soldiers to remain in formation and remain protected. They lose the charge bonus, but in this game, formation is almost everything and so it is worth it.
A tip bro. Your hoplite got melted cuz you let him the v formation. Pay attention that the shield protect from the front and the LEFT. So in that case the right-wing hoplite should be positioned different so they still can face the incoming arrows with their shields. Or you sinples close the chockpoint instead of doing the V-thing
Great vid. very helpful thanks! :) GET YOUR HOPLITES OUT OF SHEILD WALL, THEY ARE SLOW. I look forward to your future content, We need more videos like this one.
Thanks for the tips. I've veen playing almost till release and my go to is ambushing and then fighting an auto battle but this seems even more efficient.
In short: The Hellenic factions are the best in defensive style of warfare. They have the best defensive units, heavy hoplite and pikemen oriented. And strong missile units. game. Always fort your units and advance slowly and methodically in your campaigns. Especially when you play in DEI, which i highly suggest btw. Now if you enjoy more agressive style of plays then you should start utilising more Peltasts, Swordsmen and Cavalry. But be aware they all require a lot of micromanagement. Meaning to maximize their efficiency you should maneuver and control your units precisely in order to make them work. If you play just the vanilla game though, you can just throw your swordsmen against anyone except some unique pikemen and you will win any engagement. I suggest mastering cavalry oriented armies, once you get used to managing fast movint cavalry based armies then you could try swordsmen based armies. DEI makes it more challenging and clean.
Spartan faction is less of cavalry units and variety of sword-type units but when it comes to holding a position, you must need a 2-3 stock of Thorax and Javelin units to take 1 unit of Spartan Hoplites down.
learned about fort battle strats by a youtuber called primus pilus. Fort battles are stupidly op if you are on defense. do the cup stragety with your units and you can win up to a 1:4 battle.
Great video!!! Still patiently waiting for empire 2!! I still play Rome 2, and shogun 2 to this day! Not the biggest fan of anything after Attila besides Warhammer1-3
My way of doing is having atleast 2 cav units. And from the start of the battle, I have them positioned outside the fort and a bit far away so the AI doesn’t engage them. And cover the entrances with one unit each. Then when the entire enemy army has engaged, I use my cav to cycle charge from the behind until they eventually lose moral and run.
@@TotalWarfare if you’re talking about archers, the cav will easily run them down. And as for missile cav, usually they run out of ammo and charge the entrance as well. Or if you have your own skirmishers, you can deal with them
Forts are easy in Rome 2. Pikes or spears at the entrances. Melee behind them and skirmishers behind them. Sally out with cavalry, win that battle and start hammer and anviling. Guaranteed win every time.
I hated Rome II when it came out, I don't like it now much as well, but this video is great, you got yourself a new sub. What do you think about newer Warhammer total war games?
Thanks for the idea, added to my list! The trick is to have more than the usual number of ranged units as foot shooters beat mounted shooters due to unit size.
Tried this fort battle on campaign against 3 full stacked with only 1 that has only 6 Pikemen (especially levy ones) by overlapping 1 pike over another each entrance that appear to look like 1 unit, 1 pike jabs the enemy shield away giving the other to jab through the chest even at exhausted state
Welcome to the channel! Sounds like a massive victory! I like the idea of overlapping 2 pike units. Although levy pikes have very low armour and morale so they always die easily to ranged units in my battles
@@TotalWarfare also always bring 2-3 range units like archers(preferably 150 range) just in case or a disposal unit (like militia hoplite, levy freeman or eastern spearmen) in front outside entrance just take a hit from enemy ranged units or to lure every melee units until the path is safe for cavalry to eliminate range units. Another is an artillery only point against ranged unit preferably stone rounds because it's more accurate
Lots of good ideas! I prefer archers myself as slingers just don't do enough damage and their shooting angle is more difficult to work with. I personally always use artillery on the blob as ranged units are usually too dispersed
I dont think making v shape formation using two hoplite units is a good idea, because it make easier for enemy ranged unit to target your hoplites from sideways, and also it makes more enemy units sneaking into your front line when then charge, but yes it still has a advantage because enemies would get attack from the both side at ones
I agree it's not always the best move, depending on how many shooters enemy has in their army. If they are melee only as they sometimes do, it's preferable but yeah if they have a few hard hitting javelins, a simple line is better

Play as Macedonia, place pikes in the choke points, come back in 20 minutes when you've won.
Now what happens if the enemy has artillery?

1. move some of your guys out (especially cav) and disperse the rest inside to reduce collateral damage
2. if they use it to knock the wall down you just another choke point to defend
3. if they use it to bomb your units inside, take the beating until they run out of ammo and they should not score more than maybe 200 kills each
4. if they advance while shooting with ballistae, go around them with your cav and wipe the ballistae crew out
Either way odds are you'll know in advance if they have them or not so can plan accordingly
