Losing a fort battle in DEI is virtually impossible. All you need to do is block the entrance with 2-3 units and have the rest of the army flank the blob (which the AI always does). Once the blob is flanked, mass rout ensues and the battle is won.
For the most part Funny story, a few days ago I was playing the last Roman DLC for atilla when I sent a single army in africa to deal with the eastern separatists, hoping the main Byzantines could help (I should’ve known better) Who else but the moors show up, having done absolutely nothing since they spawned in So, they corner my single army and put me in a battle where I’m outnumbered by a good 2 or 3 times what I have. Luckily The area where I spawned in the battle was near high ground, making it easier for my skutatoi to hold. Still, they were falling apart. As a last ditch effort I sent my general and his tagmata cavalry to flank around them. They were all only really half strength from previous engagements with their cavalry, but tagmata are just built like that and so they were able to break the enemies. It was still very much a Pyrrhic victory, and I had to take a few turns to recover, but me not losing my army there led to many more victories in africa and allowed me to have that one army basically take all of Mauritania alone
I had such a similar moment in the same mod while playing as Makedon against Thrace, before the encamped battle I fought another battle against Thrace, I had 4,000 soldiers and they had 9,100 (it was an open field), and at the end of the struggle I was left with just 1.7k troops but managed to kill all 9k of theirs. next, when I ended the turn (before I made a camp), I was attacked by THREE Thracian armies coming from Phillipopolis, some 14,000 soldiers compared to my 1.7k. it took me 1 hour to finish the battle and I had less than 200 surviving soldiers, alexander himself and his hiera ile bodyguard unit got 3,000 kills themselves, the pikemen did sort of good I guess, but they are much much more nerfed than the ones in vanilla
that is crazy bro good job i also had like similar battle in dei mod but it was capital defence i was playing as egypt and fighting selukia with litterly all armies in the east fighting selukids when out of a sudden some tribal faction in libyan deserts west of egypt attacked me directly sieging and assualting alexandria with 2 armies around 8k or 7k soliders i only had the garrison army and small army of 7 units 2 cavlary 4 phalanx pikemen unit and 1 archers i litterly fought at 2 sides at same battle one side fighting one of their 2 armies on the walls of the capital fort with the garrison army and another side where i had to fight their 2nd army with 20 units with only my 7 units and i had no walls advantage since this fight was out of the city i focused on fleeing them rather than killing them fighting their morale cuz they were tribes non organzied units so i knew it was impossible to kill them with my small and weak garrison army so i just scared them forcing them to retreat only killing 2k wih remaining soliders of them around 6k soliders fleeing from my remaining 900 garrison army haha
Pike camping is always a valid strategy when defending a fort or town with no walls. That wipe-out was nice to see though. Setup kinda reminds of Caesar's account of his battle against the Helvetii in Bello Gallico. He had his legions build a palisade wall with earthworks to stand on and then defended against the onslaught of the desperate Helvetii. Slaughtered them to a man and then went after the baggage train with all the women and children after they refused to surrender.
With walls too...just block the staircases and gate with hoplites/phallangites. And then the meatgrinder begin. No need to fight for the wall just let them have them. And then missile fire into their massive blob. 4-6 solid phallangites with some cavalry for any possible sally out to flank them into the gates ideally. Or a lot of generic bowmen for being your main fast killing weapon. Any spendable militia can be used just to fill gaps if needed or as last ditch effort, all and all on average 5 phallangites can easily sway the battle to your favour to defend a walled city easily. Or a simple settlement. Your only concerns would be enemy missiles in the open settlements. Which you better deal with. 5 Phallanx MUST Defending Army 2-4? Militia (Garrison) 2-6? Archers (Garrison) 1-2? Cavalry (Garrison) No stack can defeat you with just those. Except Rome, yet even then just make sure get maybe few more units into the defending army and you will make it. As long as you know what you are doing by following the principles mentioned. Cavalry is barely an issue in sieges. Just have a few if you are bored and want to sally out from a second gate and go all the way around to pick a few easy kills. Unless they got a lot of cav then do not even bother. You do not have to. Their cavalry, be it missile or not will have to engage at some point in melee and they will never win a head to head against hoplites or phallangites even if exhausted. As far as wall city goes. For open just get a decent half stack or 15 units army at max. No full stack is meant to be defending unless heavily damaged hoping to replenish.
i was playing with radious unit mod list once as suebi and i had some suebi pikes in my army during an offensive siege, they lost half their unit but got 1450 kills!I love those pike chokepoint moments.
Great video! I never tried to set barricades in between the pallisade walls and put pikes straight behind them! I always made the classic ''L-shape'' with the pikes and barricades facing inwards into the fort opening and then Pin the enemy either from 2 or 3 sides, depending on how many units I had. This setup seems to require even less units so thanks for sharing! Important with a proper hammer though, that COmpanion cavalry is so good!
funny to see spears glitching through walls was still not fixed in rome 2. i remember in the original rome you could just place these behind pallisades and they would kill any battering rams before they could hit your walls, incredibly broken

i agree with you on roman legions but pike phalanx are not that hard to deffeat they are really vunrebale to missiles and flanking if you flank them a little bit you can decicevely defeat them or a single charge in the rear will rout them because their strength is in their formation but hoplite are bit overpowered but still great mod to play with.
You are extremely wrong, the pikes in this mod are nerfed than the ones in vanilla and get much much less kills, I mean after 20 minutes of fighting with one of my 1.3k pikemen units, they only had 300 kills and were down by 110 soldiers from original size, in comparison to the vanilla game I would probably have like 1000 kills if I had the same conditions
Rule 1 when commanding any army- always fucking scout ahead, if not 1? Then 2. - varus in the massacre of the tuetoburg forest
Always scout first!
Weren't the cav/scouts varus had germanic and was a part of the ambush?
so make sure the scouts are atleast trustworthy
Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions !!
