In the Baroque period, the designation "for flute" by itself meant alto recorder (what you see here). The sideways flute was always called flauto traverso (Italian), flute traversiere (French), or German flute (English). Recorder can also be called flauto dolce, flute douce, flauto doce, flute a bec, blokfluit, blockflote. (Sorry, my "accents" are missing!)
@Polluxgeminae That's what I mean...it says Concerto for 4 flutes, but obviously they are not. A beautiful piece though, and the recorders offer such a different tone to the piece.

Thank you for your explanation. Although this piece sounds beautiful on recorders, I believe they were originally written for "sideways" flutes.
