So nostalgic memories from the early 70s in Holland when I was a young kid and my mother was practicing the alto recorder and had an LP of him. The sound of a recorder will always remind me of these times. So sad he passed on.
I too, was there in Amsterdam, loving his music and going to those beautiful concerts in small churches. I played his LPs endlessly up there in my tiny bedsitter. Those were magical times. We were so very lucky to have heard the best whilst he was still alive. Now, I can listen to my CDs and remember him and his glorious playing, but I hadn't realised until just now, that I could also see him playing from when we were all young. Remembering Frans Bruggen with gratitude for what you gave us. Thank you!
I love Frans Br uggens playing, things have changed and there are now so many very talented recorder players about all with their own take on the music. Something we hear excessive swelling of the notes, Bruggen is always in control of this and to my mind it makes his performances among best, even when they were recorded many years ago.
For me Frans Brüggen is the best recorder player of XX century and, probably, of all times !! And the Telemann's fantasias... Thank you very much for posting this wonderful video.
as a young, teenaged aspiring recorder player i look up to this man, because of the passion and soul he put into his practises. i had no idea he had passed on, but may he rest in peace.
Wooden. The same type I was censured for playing in a competition. Recorders have the best tone when made of the right wood but we're forced to have plastic.
I've only today found out about Bruggen. I love him so much all ready. I'm so sad that he is dead... He plays very well, and leads a great orchestral performance.
A man in the recorder orchestra I played in said Telemann wrote the most music for the recorder. Like the father of the recorder. It bring you straight away to a different era.
It's not weird. Alto F-recorder has a lower E note attainable by closing all holes plus the bottom air vent half-closed. You do that by tipping the thigh with the flute. As the alto is too short to reach the thigh, you must cross the legs to rise the thigh enough. A few baroque pieces have this "bonus note" in the score. A virtuoso player can therefore decide to acquire that position as natural so he's "ready for E" and relaxed - even though he knows he's not going to play an E that evening.
I am referring to the "rolling" movement of the recorder in his hands. You can see it in the video of the Van Eyck as well. He rolls the recorder on the lip with his hands constantly. Seems to be conected with the way he also raises the arms on most notes. He raises the arms (like a chicken's wings), rolls the recorder in the same action.
This should be shown to all those who say the recorder isn't a real instrument. Just superb, Bruggen was the master.
omg i was thinking the exact same thing this is just genious
in my opinion everything that makes sound can u turn in to an instrument :D
