A long-time follower of Jeffrey Sachs and John Mearsheimer here. I've leaned more and more to Sachs as my exposure and research on geopolitics and economics expanded. Mearsheimer's "containing China" stand became increasingly aligned with the disastrous US government's policy since Obama's "pivot to China" days. I kept asking and arguing, WHY? China worked super hard to get to where they are now. They elevated over 800 MILLION of their citizens out of poverty just in the past few decades. They're one of the oldest civilizations, they're smart, they're innovative, they work hard, they're entrepreneurial, they're pragmatic, they hate wars, they don't intervene with other countries' politics, they don't bomb, nuke, regime-change other countries, they have only one military base outside China (to primarily protect their interest in a critical trade route in the international waters), they've advanced their educationl system, infrastructure and status of their society, etc., etc. What business does the US have in containing this unprecedented endeavor to a betterment of a billion and half lives? China has the absolute right to become a powerful nation because they damn well worked hard for it and achieved it peacefully (unlike the West that prospered by of course hardwork but also by genocide of natives, slavery, colonization, and unimaginable brutality). I have therefore lost interest lately on Mearsheimer's "realism" of choosing one nuclear war over the other. Sachs is always on point, reasonable, respectful to the sovereignty of the Global South countries and their leaders he works with, and truly passionate about peace and development. I'm with Sachs!
@@mnet1514 I totally agree with you. If John Meirsheimer was merely explaining the bridal cold realities of US policies, he's a great scholar. But when it is also his agenda to contain China, I disagree and don't think that's a good holistic man
My respect for Prof. Sachs has grown tremendously after hearing him in “all in summit” talk. He stood firm for his belief under a lot of pressure in that talk, he talks with a real compassion for humanity, and while he advocates for peace, he is not naive in his thinking. And the man understands China deeply. The world needs more men like him.
I believe he is very much naive. I heard him that “someone” should get a passport. He might have worked in USSR and Asia, but he has no idea what is going on on the ground in central/eastern europe an Ukraine. He advocates to understand both sides, why doesn’t he represent both sides opinions?

Prof Jeff is absolutely right - India will never align with US against China. We don't hate China, don't about the other way around. India doesn't intend to become a super power at least not in the way US or China are or intend to be. We just want to grow to the extent possible. We are not war mongering like the US. One major misperception propagated here, that Jeffery has addressed before but did not rebut with here: The US has in reality shown no intent (although they claim otherwise) to spread democracy. The US has disassembled, subverted and Couped more democracies as compared to the Dictators they have removed. Yet the US Vehemently supports Monarchies such as Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The US had for instance also overturned the Iranian democracy (left leaning) in 1953 and caused the Taliban to come to power in Afghanistan by sporting the Mujahideen in the 1980's and 1990's. That is in spite of the Afghanistan having a Secular (left leaning) democracy in the 1970's.
The United States of Avarice just as well created the Mujs, starting in mid-1979 (by Zbig Brzezinskis' own admission, or rather bragging about it back in the late 20th century), at least half a year BEFORE the USSR intervention in Afghanistan (on request from the then legitimate Afgani government). It was a very good panel discussion. I have a few thoughts after listening to it. First, the world's hot conflicts, Ukraine, Taiwan, Gaza, all depend on the behavior of the United States. Although John said that the United States only takes its own interests into consideration and always wants to maintain its hegemony, will this solve the problem? Secondly, the United States is surrounding China in Asia, but says that China is a threat. Let's see in our own eyes, who patrols the Taiwan Strait, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea every day? Are those American waters? Third, is India an ally of the United States. This is the most ridiculous judgment I have ever heard. Going back 30 years, the United States also thought that China was its ally. Fine, if the United States really wants to be the hegemon of the world as John pointed out, then don't talk about security and peace, just prepare for war and destruction.

Notes for serious listeners: 1. The key differences between Mearsheimer & Sachs are about power vs economics. Economics prefers positive sum games. Power prefers zero sum games. 2. Mearsheimer thinks conflict is inevitable given the regional hegemon that's the US. If you are the biggest baddest bully on the street, you'll be threatened by a challenger and work to contain it. Sachs however, believes this kind of thinking gets us closer to the brink of nuclear war and should be halted.
1. While I like the high level hypothesis that economics is a positive sum game, this is a false way of looking at it. Thus, why there is the idea of "economic warfare". It was not a "positive sum game" to all the Midwest who the billionaire auto owner class decided to outsource all of their labor to other sources of cheap labor. In the 1970's It would have been better to have pushed much more into robotics to manufacture domestically. To be fair its always easy to judge history 50 years later... 2. While I agree with this idea of holding nuclear war as a concern, MAD is still a thing. And given how excessively hostile the CCP has been to the Filipinos over the last 5 years, with numbers of increasing ships, they are pushing hostility all over. Also the CCP is the King of playing the victim when they are ramming and sinking Filipino ships, that are 20 miles off of the coast of the Philippines. That's +500 miles away from China. It sounds like they are pushing into the Malaysian and Indian waters too to attempt to control the pathways of oil too. Also China alone currently produces 50% of all ships in the whole world....

What seems to be missed is through most of China's history it WAS a regional hegemon. And it DIDN'T go galavanting around the world trying to remake societies.
Regional power, not hegemon. The tribute system is actually exaggerated by the west. Many times the tribute given by smaller state to China is rewarded with even bigger and valuable gift to the ruler of the smaller state. China for the most part when ruled by settled Han people is quite docile and inward looking (Ming and Song is a good example). But when it was conquered by nomadic people like the manchu and mongols, it became expansionist and also assimilates it ruler's ethnicity. Whoever conquers China becomes Chinese.
@@turtlesoup8134 No. Hegemon. Saying China wasn't a hegemon, is like saying Rome wasn't a hegemon or Persia. No one in the region was a real challenge and they looked to China for legitimization in exchange of tribute. And as you mentioned that wasn't the Chinese that were doing all the foreign ventures, it was the Mongols.
@@Jamfar777 A hegemon means that it can dictate the actions and policy of its neighbor. But in reality, that is not the case for the most part of Chinese history. There was a lot of diplomacy and influencing the neighbors but either it is unwilling or unable to be a true hegemon. The qing dynasty is unquestionably a hegemon, but I am speaking about Chinese civilization as a whole. Song and Ming are weak in terms of military and definitely can't enforce hegemony. Yuan is of course a Hegemon since it is Mongolian but it doesn't last. China for the most part is defending against outside invaders from far smaller nomadic group or nation.
@@turtlesoup8134 "Hegemony is the political, economic, and military predominance of one state over others states, either regional or global." Due to China's size and industry, it was the economic center of gravity for the region. While, periphery nations getting domestic LEGITIMACY from association with the Emperor. That is a hegemon. That's like being the medieval Pope in Western Europe, with the power to acknowledge kings. Combine that with economic power, cultural influence, and the largest regional military.

They disagree on China, but they are respectful to each other. I agree with Sacks. Mearsheimer is thinking what’s good for America and Sacks what’s good for the world.
What good is it for usa when nuclear wars happen? There are limits to how far you can push thing. What usa is doing is creating the condition that Will make sure, china becoming your enemy. And you want to destroy a country that have hundreds if not thousand of nukes?
I’ve heard Mearsheimer interact on news shows with antagonists. He was calm, patient and professorial; presented facts that could not be disputed. 2 men who should be consulted by our leaders.
Sachs also is thinking what's good for America. No way a neclear war is good for America. Sachs wants US learn to respect another big power who gets nuclear weapons. Mearsheimer just believes nothing will work, let's go to hell together.
Mearsheimer: USA is a ruthless great power. Of course, he wants USA staying in hegemony as a USA citizen. But the cost of USA hegemony is people in the rest of the world suffering struggling for a living while USA leading west live a much better life level than the rest of the world. That’s the truth behind this hegemony. I don’t think people from global south agree with this world order. I think Sacks just means being a local America continent hegemony is okay, USA still leads a good life.
Agreed, 1 hour is far too little time. I have heard them speak hundreds of times individually but this is the first time that I have heard Mearsheimer say that he would wish there was another path that deviates from the clash of great powers.

Jeffrey Sacks - BRAVO! My day is only meaningful if I have a chance to listen to Jeffery. Clear, reflecting realty, logical, rational, genius professor and, unfortunately, so naive. But he now submuts that he was naive in the past. I wish more people in the world listen to his opinion. He desperately tries to save the world, but not too many people really get that he is damn right about nuclear thread. The nukes really can ruin your day! Wake up, folks!
I agree with Prof. Sachs, the world doesn't have to be a sea of sharks. This is what BRICS is doing, uniting great powers to trade and cooperate, not to fight wars. I hope one day the US and Europe join this peaceful block.
Absolutely!

One major misperception propagated here, that Jeffery has addressed before but did not rebut with here:
The US has in reality shown no intent (although they claim otherwise) to spread democracy.
Operation Cyclone iirc.

This is the most important discussion about geopolitics to date, everyone must listen! Jeff is outstanding! He is the “National Treasure” of the world for “Peace and Prosperity”!

Is it not the US that is acting like the dictator of the world? There is a UN SC that has been deliberately mocked, abused rendered useless facing resolution after resolution vetoed by the US, Israel, and their allies - so that they can over rule UN's role and then wage wars, i.e.. Iraq, Syria, Libya.... The US does not abide by any humanitarian law nor Geneva Conventions, nor the ICC nor the ICJ, it signs treaties it does not respect, agreements that they disregard. Plus, Putin and Xi Jinping are not dictators. Was wondering if the questioner is actually part of the deep state propaganda machine. He knows all their talking points. It's particularly laughable that people describe Xi as a dictator. He doesn't make any decisions alone, there are many people in the government of China that have to agree on policy. China is anything but a dictatorship.
Then he says that Xi Jingping is self imploding due to containment. Where is he getting this stuff?
Jaycal is just dumb on US foreign policy objectives
Notes for serious listeners:
Based on the behavior of the US government, we are doomed.

It's the new president who decides to act as the USA's proxy to provoke China.
China is extremely patient with the Philippines. If it were the USA or Russia, the Philippines would have been bombed all over, to say the least. You need to understand different people have different mindset, not all think the same way as the USA.

Jeffrey Sachs is a sensible guy and not a warmonger.
He's a traitor to America.
I too would love for the CCP to have a peaceful policy..... but having watched videos of China using their coast guard in islands 20 miles off of the Philippians, +500 miles away from China attacking, stabbing people, ramming almost sinking Philippian coast guard boats.... because China built a military base on top of the coral reefs inside the Philippians economic zones, but just outside their 20-mile boarder. There was a 60 Minutes episode about this I saw on 9.16.2024.
It was just economic, but sadly now it is growing into a military force. Much the same as the US did, after we had our men being taken as slaves and worked to death in the Ottoman Empire in the 1800's.
Edit for the literal Chinese Spies below:
Yes, I have heard this from 4 different sources. Separately, I have heard this from my Aunt who is Filipino and has family back in the Philippines, as well as I have a childhood best friend who just moved out to the Philippines 3 months ago.
The reason I said to watch the 60 minutes episode is because it encapsulates it well, and shows how the Chinese government makes their propaganda against the country they are attacking... in this case the Philippines.
For the Chinese Spies, do you really have nothing else to do with your time? Why don't you go worship Xi more and memorize his "Xi Thought"?
China has the right to defend itself, just like any other country. They can and will build a powerful military. Now, how many countries did China invade in the last 100 years vs America, England, Germany, Japan, etc.?

@@turtlesoup8134 "Hegemony is the political, economic, and military predominance of one state over others states, either regional or global."
