I see that some of your hair is loose from breakage but rather than cutting them off and throwing them away you could use that same loose hair to wrap around the the other damage hair to restore it. A dear friend who started my locks did that. She threaded a needle with loose hair to thicken the thin area of my lock, good as new! Also... you can take the loosen hair wrap it around the damaged lock and use a 3 prong crochet needle to get it back to its original look. Hope this helps y’all!
My locs are 10 years old....I have a bath stool in the shower while I wash, that way I don't rush because the hair gets so heavy.....works well for me🙂
I saw a video by yannie the locologist once, and she said sometimes when people have been growing locs a while and they are really long, the ends will sometimes break off from normal wear and tear of rubbing against your body, your clothing, furniture, ect. So I don't think you are doing anything wrong, I think it's just inevitable once your locs get to a certain length.
I love your locks , I have locks myself for 3 years now and am loving it I don't use conditioner either ,I use a crotchet needle when am retwisting ,I retwist about every 3 months the color of my hair also started to change and I don't think I will ever dye it ,I use Tresseme clarifying /Anti Breakage shampoo my longest locks is 9inches tall I think it's growing pretty fast I can't wait for it to get as tall as your's
I would recommend spraying and oiling your ends, they may be vreaking off due to rubbing against things and each other and if theyre dry its easier for them ti get weak and break. So the oil helps keep them lubricated
The part you mention about conditioner, you can just dilute the conditioner. Take a spray bottle, put some water and a little bit of conditioner then shake it up really good and spray it on your locs and it would be easier to wash out instead of having thick creamy conditioner in your locs I learned that tip from someone on youtube. In the beginning when I started my locs at first I never put conditioner in my locs throughout most of my journey because I was always hearing about conditioner causing buildup and I was scared to get build up. But then some time this year is when I started to use conditioner by diluting it after I heard that tip from this youtuber. Btw I just turned 3 years locked this past September😁 (ok no one asked lol)
lol 3 years is a big deal! and that's a good idea though. I honestly haven't missed using conditioner but it sounds like a good plan for anyone who really wants to try it with less fear of buildup. I just still worry about it a little just because honestly some things show up years later instead of right away so I just like to be extra cautious and stay away.
I do this same thing to add conditioner to my locs.. I also use and swear by the same neutrogena shampoo in this video. I love it but that shampoo alone is so stripping to also use dish soap but to each their own. However, I feel with using that shampoo I have to follow up with a hydrating/moisturizing shampoo and a diluted conditioner as well as a hot oil treatment to prevent my locs feeling like straw.
Your locs are absolutely gorgeous, locs tell a story. If your were ever stressed out, sick or depressed, they will have thin spots from when one might have been sick etc
Yannie the Locologist is the truth!!!! That's how I learned too that we do the most to our hair. Remember: 1. Less is best. Less washing and no conditioner needed. A. Lemon 🍋 dish soap to strip the hair but only 1-3 times a year especially if you're using alot of hair products B. Less hair manipulation including styling and retwisting. 2. Rose water with Vit E and a few drops of peppermint. 3. Drink plenty of water 4. Oil your scalp every 5-7 days with castor oil 5. Keep your hair protected to keep it moisturized. Wrap it with silk or satin. 6. Towel dry That's when my hair really started to grow. 😊🥰

@@yvonneoy3124 Do NOT let them use wax everrrrrrr. Unless they are melting it down and using the absolute minimum ITS GONNA cause build up within the loc and then it will reharden damaging your hair. Especially at the loc bed/roots. When you wash your hair with hot water (as one should) it will cake up and become visible white chunks of wax. This can cause your hair to fall out because it blocks the hair follicle at the scalp cause the hair to basically suffocate. This will cause the scalp to shed ALL the hair in that spot and deactivate the follicle permanently causing what is known as Alopecia Areata (spot baldness). This is truth and it unfortunately happened to me. It sucks. Now I have 5 dime to nickle size bald spot around my head. And its from using wax when I had locs. I will get them again but this time they have to hide the bald patches. Lesson learned.
I'm a man and found your video very insightful and inspiring. I've contemplated locs for years, and am finally going to get mine started soon. I'm recovering from an injury and surgery, and am close to walking again normally. Soon as I retire these crutches in the next few weeks, I'm going to a loctician a.s.a.p. I've been fighting myself on what size locs I want, and the thickness of yours would be perfect for me. Not too tiny, and not too bulky. I am a larger frame guy. This is my first video about locs and I’m actually happy to see this. I want to start locing my hair because I don’t do much to my hair or like to do my hair. I’m also lazy with it. Had loose natural hair and it only took one time for me to have to go into hospital in middle of the nite looking like grandma Moses with a scarf on my head to say I need low maintenance hair lol. Been locked ever since and that was 10 years ago.
The stripping part made me lol. My locs have also gotten much lighter over the years too. I think it's such a cool thing, I find myself looking forward to getting lots of sun because of it

My hair does that thinning only around my edges in the front. but I realize that it thins like that due to my diet sometimes, and stress as well. When I eat well, and get all my nutrients, the locs around my edges are better.

I'm going to take pride in my locs as well. I had them before and cut them off when they just was at my shoulder thinking that it was the right thing to do at the time due to employment but the hell with that. I'm praying to be a God fearing Black business owner anyway so I'll be setting my own tone. But back to my locs ,I really love everything about BLACK PEOPLE taking pride in our knotty hair. I think it's the stripping of the hair with the dish liquid. You should do an aloe vera treatment on your ends. Those are the oldest part of the hair ,so its drying out and causes the breakage. You can also mend your locks with needle and thread. You have beautiful hair.
You can find a professional to crotchet your thinning parts and they attach them to the thicker parts and they become thick again. It’s a very common thing to do
You are so beautiful! I'm starting my loc journey again at 20 yrs old. Started my locs at 11yrs thru 16 yrs old. Hair was thinning cuz of twisting too much so now I know what to do this time ☺
You and your locs are so beautiful 😍 For the thinning ends, instead of cutting/knotting them; I just fold them and crochet them back up the length of the loc and then roll them in my palms to secure it. I use the thinnest (since I have small locs) crochet hook with the grey handle. Hope that helps! P.S. try not to cut them unless absolutely necessary 😅
You can start locs with coils and 2 strand twist them together if they’re long enough to help train your hair to loc faster or interlock the roots after installation.

Your locs are doing that due to lac of moisture. In short our hair need moisture added back in it after stripping to avoid hair dehydration which later leads to breakage. Do your research on not conditioning hair. Locs are not an exception ppl just don’t like to take the time to completely wash it out but you can also use a water based leave in conditioner so your hair will at least have something
perhaps, but my hair actually started doing all of the breakage in the middle way before I started using clarifying shampoos to get rid of buildup that's why I think it may be something else. But I just purchased some dreadlock conditioners from a couple black-owned stores so I will try those and review them!
@@TheSimpleFarmacist this is maybe due to the period between your retwist. Those hairs are not getting matted to strengthen the loc. You can retwist often just use less tension and conditioning every once in awhile may address it as well.

Aww. I know about that neck pain from washing my long locks of 10 yrs. Also used Palmolive dishwashing liquid to strip it, followed by homemade natural plants and essential oils. Thanks for sharing with us.
I cut my locs after 3 years because of itchy scalp from buildup. The way you tell your story has made me believe in all the things I feared and doubted. Now, I feel more confident and will get my locs back. Thank you girl. Now I'll find a video of 2 or 3 twist methods of restarting the locs.
I have microlocs, and I use the Melanin Hair Care conditioner. It works wonders for me. I know microlocs can handle conditioner a bit better, but you could consider diluting it. My hair was super dry because I wasn't using conditioner for years. Now it's soft without any build up. Also my hair color looks radiant when I use the Melanin Hair Care line.
Very informative video. Someone once said that the wringing motion used sometimes to squeeze water out of locs whilst washing was what caused her thin locs at and near the ends.
those thin sections are where strands were broken during times of stress, while there were more strands in the twist when they were breaking, those thin area were the surviving strands during the trauma
I'm three weeks into my loc journey because my health means I can't keep up with all the regular maintenance of loose natural hair anymore (I was natural for 9 years prior to deciding to loc my hair). I feel like all I've been watching online since then is loc advice videos 😂 I love them so far, can't wait to see where they go.
Would you mind sharing how it’s going for you? My health has also meant I’m not able to keep up with my hair anymore , and I told myself I need to either cut it off or loc it. I don’t want to cut it, but I’m nervous about locking!
@@agreatday9566 it's honestly been great! I'm two months and a week in at this point and once you actually get over wanting to play in them and keep them looking super manicured it's so easy. Know they are GOING to look rough at the stage where they actually do start locking. My friend started mine off with a loc tool kit that had a little teaser pick thing that kind of jump started the process so I don't have experience starting straight from coils or twists. I definitely suggest starting your locs that way if possible just because they don't go through as much of the initial unraveling phase. Hope this helps!

Hi. I also loc'd in 2011! Best decision ever. I agree about the weight. My loc goal was butt length. After reaching it I cut back to my shoulders. Cute. I missed my length. I'm at just below my shoulder blades now. About 2 inches longer will be my sweet length and I will maintain it there. I learned early on that 4 times a year is plenty of retightening to maintain neat locs. I use various poos but I dilute them. I'm guessing that you may be drying your hair out with the full strength poos that are stripping the gunk out. Perhaps it's drying your locs out. Dry hair is prone to breakage. I have 4c hair and I have never suffered breakage with my locs. I do not condition at all. However, after shampooing I drench my locs with pure grapeseed oil. It never builds up in my locs and my locs drink it up! It absorbs easily. Everyone's hair is unique but consider less stripping and gentler poos. Your locs are absolutely Gorgeous Dahling!!!
Also use flaxseed gel to retwist your hair instead of gels or aloe vera the pure One mix it with your oil then retwist either one flaxseed or aloe vera that's what I do and what my dreads or feeling dry I use rose water and vitamin E mixed together and spray it on my dreadlocks
I'm curious if the locs are thinning at the ends like that from lack of moisture? No judgment or shaming, your hair is gorgeous!!! and I'm super excited to start my locks in 2022 with two strand twist! So LOL I have no experience yet, I'm just going off of other experiences I have heard about from other people with locs. But using three different types of shampoo seems a little excessive. I realize using clarifying shampoos and thoroughly cleansing the hair is essential to prevent build up but it is going to leave your hair very dry. There's got to be some type of moisture put back into the hair. And although the oil is not bad for the hair it doesn't necessarily moisturize it. Since conditioners leave residue and causes build up I plan on using water-based moisturizers to restore moisture when I loc my hair. Like rose water and aloe vera juice. Who knows moisture could have nothing to do with it but I just wonder.
You can use the crochet method to repair thin ends/ weak hair. You can even have locs that have fallen out be reinstalled without using thread or anything like that. I think there's a place in New York that can do it.
22:22 If you're not doing it already, your ends (and the length) of your locs probably need that oil application just as (and even more than) your scalp and the roots of your locs. The ends are older and in need of babying and nourishment. A well-designed oil blend would probably benefit them.
ACV and baking soda is good....if you want things pulled from deep in the loc and brought to the surface, try bentonite clay and acv. I personally use coconut vinegar from the asian grocery store because it's waaay cheaper than acv. I warm it up and then make a very watery mixture with the bentonite (penerates easier and easier to wash out). WARNING...it will bring lots of things to the surface, product build up/lint etc... Let me give you an example....I've had my locs for over 25+ years, I had a very long loc at the back, close to my neck. A very thick/full loc, I use to wish all my locs were thick and full like it. when I first used the bentonite mix, why did that locs almost seperate into two. What I didn't realize is that it was two locs that formed into one, lol. So yup, it penetrates really deep.
I saw your gorgeous locs and I wanted to know how you created them. This video is packed with useful - and amusing! -information. About your thinning locs, I agree with the lady who commented that they tell the history of your journey. It looks like many of the thin areas are the same point along your locks. If you think back to the first year when they were about 4 or 5 inches long, you may remember that you were retwisting differently or more often or became obsessed with picking lint or residue out. Or you may have played with them more. Whatever you were doing, you don't do it anymore so stop worrying! You know what works for you now! As you've learned to care for them they're growing in even more beautifully. Thanks for sharing what you learned.
Thanks for watching! I know I did a lot of things wrong when my locs were super short so that probably contributed to the thinning. But yes, I am doing a much better job now so can't wait to see what the next few years bring!
The loc thinness is not your fault. I learned in the years of doing my own locs that it just a natural Occurrence that happens with its weight and wears at the ends. What you're doing is fine, but add loc repair involving loc crocheting and combining methods to preserve the loc as part of your arsenal. I'll be taking a course so I can do my own properly since it's difficult seeking a great Lockician to do it in my area. Keep learning. Also, detox your locs to remove all that buildup. I did that and it was such a huge difference in the weight and feel. So many changes are happening in our favor for the loc community for the better which has its own category. Locked hair clients, in a sense, can't use the same stuff as natural hair care clients simply to prevent the buildup and to avoid detrimental damage to the hair. I tried to use those products and I paid the price. I keep it simple now and I use products that are just for locked hair only. At the same time, I know to read the ingredients and use common sense to determine if a product or a method is good for my hair.
I’m laughing because I feel your pain. I’ve been on my loc journey for more than 25 years. Everything you said was absolutely correct. I do look forward to summer though so my hair can dry quickly. The part where your LOCS thin is called shedding just like many things in nature sheds. Yes your hair color will change. My hair started out the same color as yours. You see using oil alone to retwist locs to me doesn’t give me the desired look I want at the roots. I like using the all natural gel Genuine African Formula SuperGro hair gel. I get mine from Amazon
I had locs for about 25 years. And most of what you said I totally agree with. I would have to sleep with my hair on top of my head at night because it was so heavy. My hair was down to my gluteus maximus. I cut it many times. Now that I am 54 years old I have now started sister locs which are very small and they are taking some time to loc. My first set of long locs were thick the second set thinned into my smaller ones which was the size of that small one you showed us. However, one thing you have that I didn't was that thick thick hair as you do but no one ever knew it because it still looked so thick. Anywho, I learned some great information from your video. However, look out for the signs of too much thinning as you get older. Nevertheless, enjoy your hair I'm so jealous looking at it. They are Beautiful!!!!! When I had mine It was like a love hate thing; but I miss them so much. I still have my locs and I will let someone use them who needs hair so that's something to think about when you do cut them. Also, I found thin invisible thread and sewed my hair when it would thin out like that at the end the bottom of the locs. I would wrap the hair into the middle of the loc to strengthen it. I mean, why not you can sew other hair into your head like extensions why not fix my own hair with thread. I'm just saying. That's just me. Again, Awesome video...... And Awesome LOCS!!!!!!
Very informative video! I didn't know your locs could naturally change color over time. Your locs are beautiful, and your skin is so clear 💖. I started my locs 6/26/2020, and have been getting them washed & retwisted in a salon every 4-6 weeks. Do you think that is too often? I've also been too scared to wash/retwist them myself in fear of messing them up.
Honestly, that’s up to you... your Locs are still very new so 6 weeks might be okay for your hair. That’s what I did in the beginning but as time went on, I realized that a less manipulative approach seemed to work best for keeping my roots healthy. So you’ll also get to see what works best for you, especially as you learn to take care of your hair yourself.
My daughter had locs from 4.5 to 11 years and I didn’t retweet often. I miss her locs they were think healthy and long. 😢. I took really good care of them. I’m going to lock my own.
I know you think that isoplus neutralizer shampoo is good but that shampoo is meant to use after a relaxer to stop the relaxer from working and to return your hair to its normal PH after the relaxer has blasted open your follicles to straighten the hair; it is not meant to use as a maintenance shampoo it will make your hair brittle weak and then break when used as a maintenance shampoo. Also why not use a clarifying shampoo. They have some really good ones out there. As a licensed hair stylist I cringed when I hear folks say they use dish detergent to wash their hair. You're beautiful! Your hair is beautiful! Most of what you said has been my experience and I share the same ideas about my own locs...low maintenance is my motto when it comes to my hair! The thinning at the ends of your locs is nothing but the fact that they're worn out...they're the oldest parts of your hair so it's literally usually just wear and tear and there's nothing you're doing wrong...it is what it is.
Thanks for the video. You may want to try Dollylocks shampoo or Kottyboy dreadlocks shampoo. Dish is working to clean your hair but I think your issues with thin ends and brokerage is from the Strong sulfates in the dish soap. I have very long locs almost to my bottom. I hate wash day. It’s so much work. I don’t use any conditioner ever. I only use dollylocks dreadlocks shampoo with their detox kits. I use natural aloe Vera plant. I Mix it in a blender with water and put it in a spray bottle with a few drops of lavender and rosemary essential oil. I have been doing this for the last two years of my 8 year loc Journey. Noticed a big difference with no more thinning or breakage.

Your dreadlocks looks so healthy. I've had trouble with built-up lint, I've locks my hair since 2013 my hair should be now down my back. Because I've been picking the ends out and picking lint out I've had to cut a lot of it off my ends the problem right now where I've undone the ends to take out the lint my locs have come undone at the ends my hair is straight I'm mixed race my hair was very long when I started off with two Twist over the time, I had to cut it from the end up to make it look like locks. I had 220 locks over the time wherever loud people entrusted them to do my hair interlocking it I have joined some of my locks together so I think I've got 200 locks now . I'm doing my hair myself because I find when people do my hair they join the locks together you are so right my hair had change colour with the weather and the seawater . I interlock my hair because twist and palm does not stay in my hair. I'm just trying to learn how to crochet 8 into my hair any ideas. I love your video. I am multiracial and I have wanted locs for almost my entire life; however, because of my hair texture I’m fearful of my locs looking like a white person‘s hair looks in locs. I am glad that my grandson is confident at such a young age and has started his loc journey. 🥰

My loc journey is more than 25 years. LOCS are high maintenance especially when you have a lot of hair. Most people think it’s less maintenance but that’s not the case at all. When she was washing her hair that pain in her neck is real. And your arms get very tired. And unless you find someone good to maintain your hair if you do your LOCS yourself it takes hours to retwist and hours to dry. Just thought I’d share my 2 cents worth. The more you know.

Hi, my natural hair color changes because of the sun as well, and I was told to use a natural Aloe Vera spray, personally I use Grean Leaf Naturals, from Amazon. It’s good for your skin too. I easily tan in the summertime and my hair gets lighter from the sun, which causes damage to my ends.
I use conditioner BUT only when I henna/indigo my locs or dye them. I get a squeeze bottle 16 oz from the dollar store, I add about 1 tbsp of conditioner and add water, aloe vera juice or distilled rosewater or a combo of all to the conditioner. This avoids the buildup and it still conditions. I do a diy fabric softener from white vinegar/cheap conditioner/water and that's how I knew diluting the conditioner a lot would still work on my locs.
Now this is my hair goal for sureee!! I started mine just over 2 weeks ago and I’m happily getting used to the journey, I’m used to have long extensions to my ass, and it feels like a restart but, it was time, I said for years I’d have twists so yeah!! As for the thinning of the ends I wouldn’t worry about it, as long as I wasn’t balding/thinning at the roots! I like the tip of coiling the roots when re twisting, yesss Beautiful and so versatile, Thankyou for these tips!! 🥰🥰😘

For the thin areas you can repair them with hair and a crochet hook. Either one of the locs you cut off or hair you buy. There's a UA-cam channel by a man named Chris McDred, he's a loctition and educator in Dubai and he has amazing tutorials. At least you can just cut only the end off to use to work into a thin spot rather than cut it so short. I think it's a fairly common problem with locs of all types and lengths.

I see that some of your hair is loose from breakage but rather than cutting them off and throwing them away you could use that same loose hair to wrap around the the other damage hair to restore it. A dear friend who started my locks did that. She threaded a needle with loose hair to thicken the thin area of my lock, good as new! Also... you can take the loosen hair wrap it around the damaged lock and use a 3 prong crochet needle to get it back to its original look. Hope this helps y’all!

I saw a video by yannie the locologist once, and she said sometimes when people have been growing locs a while and they are really long, the ends will sometimes break off from normal wear and tear of rubbing against your body, your clothing, furniture, ect. So I don't think you are doing anything wrong, I think it's just inevitable once your locs get to a certain length.

I love your locks , I have locks myself for 3 years now and am loving it I don't use conditioner either ,I use a crotchet needle when am retwisting ,I retwist about every 3 months the color of my hair also started to change and I don't think I will ever dye it ,I use Tresseme clarifying /Anti Breakage shampoo my longest locks is 9inches tall I think it's growing pretty fast I can't wait for it to get as tall as your's
I would recommend spraying and oiling your ends, they may be vreaking off due to rubbing against things and each other and if theyre dry its easier for them ti get weak and break. So the oil helps keep them lubricated

The part you mention about conditioner, you can just dilute the conditioner. Take a spray bottle, put some water and a little bit of conditioner then shake it up really good and spray it on your locs and it would be easier to wash out instead of having thick creamy conditioner in your locs I learned that tip from someone on youtube. In the beginning when I started my locs at first I never put conditioner in my locs throughout most of my journey because I was always hearing about conditioner causing buildup and I was scared to get build up. But then some time this year is when I started to use conditioner by diluting it after I heard that tip from this youtuber. Btw I just turned 3 years locked this past September😁 (ok no one asked lol)
lol 3 years is a big deal! and that's a good idea though. I honestly haven't missed using conditioner but it sounds like a good plan for anyone who really wants to try it with less fear of buildup. I just still worry about it a little just because honestly some things show up years later instead of right away so I just like to be extra cautious and stay away.
I do this same thing to add conditioner to my locs.. I also use and swear by the same neutrogena shampoo in this video. I love it but that shampoo alone is so stripping to also use dish soap but to each their own. However, I feel with using that shampoo I have to follow up with a hydrating/moisturizing shampoo and a diluted conditioner as well as a hot oil treatment to prevent my locs feeling like straw.

Your locs are absolutely gorgeous, locs tell a story. If your were ever stressed out, sick or depressed, they will have thin spots from when one might have been sick etc

That's how I learned too that we do the most to our hair. Remember:
1. Less is best. Less washing and no conditioner needed.
A. Lemon 🍋 dish soap to strip the hair but only 1-3 times a year especially if you're using alot of hair products
B. Less hair manipulation including styling and retwisting.
2. Rose water with Vit E and a few drops of peppermint.
3. Drink plenty of water
4. Oil your scalp every 5-7 days with castor oil
5. Keep your hair protected to keep it moisturized. Wrap it with silk or satin.
6. Towel dry
That's when my hair really started to grow. 😊🥰

I retwist and start locs with just water and oil and they hold perfectly no need for gel or wax everrrr oil holds the exact same with no build up🙏🏾
I'm starting my locs. My loctician uses wax and oil, so far, I have not seen any buildup.

@@yvonneoy3124 Do NOT let them use wax everrrrrrr. Unless they are melting it down and using the absolute minimum ITS GONNA cause build up within the loc and then it will reharden damaging your hair. Especially at the loc bed/roots. When you wash your hair with hot water (as one should) it will cake up and become visible white chunks of wax. This can cause your hair to fall out because it blocks the hair follicle at the scalp cause the hair to basically suffocate. This will cause the scalp to shed ALL the hair in that spot and deactivate the follicle permanently causing what is known as Alopecia Areata (spot baldness). This is truth and it unfortunately happened to me. It sucks. Now I have 5 dime to nickle size bald spot around my head. And its from using wax when I had locs. I will get them again but this time they have to hide the bald patches. Lesson learned.

My hair does that thinning only around my edges in the front. but I realize that it thins like that due to my diet sometimes, and stress as well. When I eat well, and get all my nutrients, the locs around my edges are better.

I had them before and cut them off when they just was at my shoulder thinking that it was the right thing to do at the time due to employment but the hell with that. I think it's the stripping of the hair with the dish liquid. You should do an aloe vera treatment on your ends. Those are the oldest part of the hair ,so its drying out and causes the breakage. You can also mend your locks with needle and thread. You have beautiful hair.

You can find a professional to crotchet your thinning parts and they attach them to the thicker parts and they become thick again. It’s a very common thing to do
You are so beautiful! I'm starting my loc journey again at 20 yrs old. Started my locs at 11yrs thru 16 yrs old. Hair was thinning cuz of twisting too much so now I know what to do this time ☺
You and your locs are so beautiful 😍 For the thinning ends, instead of cutting/knotting them; I just fold them and crochet them back up the length of the loc and then roll them in my palms to secure it. I use the thinnest (since I have small locs) crochet hook with the grey handle. Hope that helps!
P.S. try not to cut them unless absolutely necessary 😅

You can start locs with coils and 2 strand twist them together if they’re long enough to help train your hair to loc faster or interlock the roots after installation.

Your locs are doing that due to lac of moisture. In short our hair need moisture added back in it after stripping to avoid hair dehydration which later leads to breakage. Do your research on not conditioning hair. Locs are not an exception ppl just don’t like to take the time to completely wash it out but you can also use a water based leave in conditioner so your hair will at least have something
perhaps, but my hair actually started doing all of the breakage in the middle way before I started using clarifying shampoos to get rid of buildup that's why I think it may be something else. But I just purchased some dreadlock conditioners from a couple black-owned stores so I will try those and review them!
@@TheSimpleFarmacist this is maybe due to the period between your retwist. Those hairs are not getting matted to strengthen the loc. You can retwist often just use less tension and conditioning every once in awhile may address it as well.

I don’t like it retwisted all the time. You give your hair a chance to thicken up.
I cut my locs after 3 years because of itchy scalp from buildup.

😊just as the trees shed leaves so the locks sheds it's breakage, just a part of the growth, keep it moist.
I have microlocs, and I use the Melanin Hair Care conditioner. It works wonders for me. I know microlocs can handle conditioner a bit better, but you could consider diluting it. My hair was super dry because I wasn't using conditioner for years. Now it's soft without any build up. Also my hair color looks radiant when I use the Melanin Hair Care line.
Btw I use the Melanin African Black Soap Shampoo, Conditioner, and Oil. Best line of products ever!

Very informative video. Someone once said that the wringing motion used sometimes to squeeze water out of locs whilst washing was what caused her thin locs at and near the ends.
those thin sections are where strands were broken during times of stress, while there were more strands in the twist when they were breaking, those thin area were the surviving strands during the trauma
Exactly and it’s probably because she retwist four times a year , that can put strain on them.
I'm three weeks into my loc journey because my health means I can't keep up with all the regular maintenance of loose natural hair anymore (I was natural for 9 years prior to deciding to loc my hair). I feel like all I've been watching online since then is loc advice videos 😂 I love them so far, can't wait to see where they go.

@@agreatday9566 it's honestly been great! I'm two months and a week in at this point and once you actually get over wanting to play in them and keep them looking super manicured it's so easy. Know they are GOING to look rough at the stage where they actually do start locking. My friend started mine off with a loc tool kit that had a little teaser pick thing that kind of jump started the process so I don't have experience starting straight from coils or twists. I definitely suggest starting your locs that way if possible just because they don't go through as much of the initial unraveling phase.

Hi. I also loc'd in 2011! Best decision ever. I agree about the weight. My loc goal was butt length. After reaching it I cut back to my shoulders. Cute. I missed my length. I'm at just below my shoulder blades now. About 2 inches longer will be my sweet length and I will maintain it there.
I learned early on that 4 times a year is plenty of retightening to maintain neat locs.
I use various poos but I dilute them.
I'm guessing that you may be drying your hair out with the full strength poos that are stripping the gunk out. Perhaps it's drying your locs out. Dry hair is prone to breakage.
I have 4c hair and I have never suffered breakage with my locs. I do not condition at all.
However, after shampooing I drench my locs with pure grapeseed oil. It never builds up in my locs and my locs drink it up! It absorbs easily.
Everyone's hair is unique but consider less stripping and gentler poos.

Also use flaxseed gel to retwist your hair instead of gels or aloe vera the pure One mix it with your oil then retwist either one flaxseed or aloe vera that's what I do and what my dreads or feeling dry I use rose water and vitamin E mixed together and spray it on my dreadlocks

I'm curious if the locs are thinning at the ends like that from lack of moisture? No judgment or shaming, your hair is gorgeous!!! and I'm super excited to start my locks in 2022 with two strand twist! So LOL I have no experience yet, I'm just going off of other experiences I have heard about from other people with locs. But using three different types of shampoo seems a little excessive. I realize using clarifying shampoos and thoroughly cleansing the hair is essential to prevent build up but it is going to leave your hair very dry. There's got to be some type of moisture put back into the hair. And although the oil is not bad for the hair it doesn't necessarily moisturize it. Since conditioners leave residue and causes build up I plan on using water-based moisturizers to restore moisture when I loc my hair. Like rose water and aloe vera juice. Who knows moisture could have nothing to do with it but I just wonder.

You can use the crochet method to repair thin ends/ weak hair. You can even have locs that have fallen out be reinstalled without using thread or anything like that. I think there's a place in New York that can do it.

22:22 If you're not doing it already, your ends (and the length) of your locs probably need that oil application just as (and even more than) your scalp and the roots of your locs. The ends are older and in need of babying and nourishment. A well-designed oil blend would probably benefit them.
Use a crochet needle to repair your thin ends. There are howto videos on YT if you search. You can even add those that you pulled off back on.

ACV and baking soda is good....if you want things pulled from deep in the loc and brought to the surface, try bentonite clay and acv. I personally use coconut vinegar from the asian grocery store because it's waaay cheaper than acv. I warm it up and then make a very watery mixture with the bentonite (penerates easier and easier to wash out). WARNING...it will bring lots of things to the surface, product build up/lint etc... Let me give you an example....I've had my locs for over 25+ years, I had a very long loc at the back, close to my neck. A very thick/full loc, I use to wish all my locs were thick and full like it. when I first used the bentonite mix, why did that locs almost seperate into two. What I didn't realize is that it was two locs that formed into one, lol. So yup, it penetrates really deep.

I saw your gorgeous locs and I wanted to know how you created them. This video is packed with useful - and amusing! -information. About your thinning locs, I agree with the lady who commented that they tell the history of your journey. It looks like many of the thin areas are the same point along your locks. If you think back to the first year when they were about 4 or 5 inches long, you may remember that you were retwisting differently or more often or became obsessed with picking lint or residue out. Or you may have played with them more. Whatever you were doing, you don't do it anymore so stop worrying! You know what works for you now! As you've learned to care for them they're growing in even more beautifully. Thanks for sharing what you learned.
Thanks for watching! I know I did a lot of things wrong when my locs were super short so that probably contributed to the thinning. But yes, I am doing a much better job now so can't wait to see what the next few years bring!
The loc thinness is not your fault. I learned in the years of doing my own locs that it just a natural Occurrence that happens with its weight and wears at the ends. What you're doing is fine, but add loc repair involving loc crocheting and combining methods to preserve the loc as part of your arsenal. I'll be taking a course so I can do my own properly since it's difficult seeking a great Lockician to do it in my area. Keep learning. Also, detox your locs to remove all that buildup. I did that and it was such a huge difference in the weight and feel. So many changes are happening in our favor for the loc community for the better which has its own category. Locked hair clients, in a sense, can't use the same stuff as natural hair care clients simply to prevent the buildup and to avoid detrimental damage to the hair. I tried to use those products and I paid the price. I keep it simple now and I use products that are just for locked hair only. At the same time, I know to read the ingredients and use common sense to determine if a product or a method is good for my hair.

I’m laughing because I feel your pain. I’ve been on my loc journey for more than 25 years. Everything you said was absolutely correct. I do look forward to summer though so my hair can dry quickly. The part where your LOCS thin is called shedding just like many things in nature sheds. Yes your hair color will change. My hair started out the same color as yours. But now it’s all gray and midway my back is brown. As yours will be someday. A testament to my hair growth and hair journey like the rings on a tree. Live that loc life in Montana sister.

You see using oil alone to retwist locs to me doesn’t give me the desired look I want at the roots. I like using the all natural gel Genuine African Formula SuperGro hair gel. I get mine from Amazon
I had locs for about 25 years. And most of what you said I totally agree with. I would have to sleep with my hair on top of my head at night because it was so heavy. My hair was down to my gluteus maximus. I cut it many times. Now that I am 54 years old I have now started sister locs which are very small and they are taking some time to loc. My first set of long locs were thick the second set thinned into my smaller ones which was the size of that small one you showed us. However, one thing you have that I didn't was that thick thick hair as you do but no one ever knew it because it still looked so thick. Anywho, I learned some great information from your video. However, look out for the signs of too much thinning as you get older. Nevertheless, enjoy your hair I'm so jealous looking at it. They are Beautiful!!!!! When I had mine It was like a love hate thing; but I miss them so much. I still have my locs and I will let someone use them who needs hair so that's something to think about when you do cut them. Also, I found thin invisible thread and sewed my hair when it would thin out like that at the end the bottom of the locs. I would wrap the hair into the middle of the loc to strengthen it. I mean, why not you can sew other hair into your head like extensions why not fix my own hair with thread. I'm just saying. That's just me. Again, Awesome video...... And Awesome LOCS!!!!!!
Very informative video! I didn't know your locs could naturally change color over time. Your locs are beautiful, and your skin is so clear 💖. I started my locs 6/26/2020, and have been getting them washed & retwisted in a salon every 4-6 weeks. Do you think that is too often? I've also been too scared to wash/retwist them myself in fear of messing them up.
Honestly, that’s up to you... your Locs are still very new so 6 weeks might be okay for your hair. That’s what I did in the beginning but as time went on, I realized that a less manipulative approach seemed to work best for keeping my roots healthy. So you’ll also get to see what works best for you, especially as you learn to take care of your hair yourself.
My daughter had locs from 4.5 to 11 years and I didn’t retweet often. I miss her locs they were think healthy and long. 😢. I took really good care of them. I’m going to lock my own.

I know you think that isoplus neutralizer shampoo is good but that shampoo is meant to use after a relaxer to stop the relaxer from working and to return your hair to its normal PH after the relaxer has blasted open your follicles to straighten the hair; it is not meant to use as a maintenance shampoo it will make your hair brittle weak and then break when used as a maintenance shampoo. Also why not use a clarifying shampoo. They have some really good ones out there. As a licensed hair stylist I cringed when I hear folks say they use dish detergent to wash their hair. You're beautiful! Your hair is beautiful! Most of what you said has been my experience and I share the same ideas about my own locs...low maintenance is my motto when it comes to my hair! The thinning at the ends of your locs is nothing but the fact that they're worn out...they're the oldest parts of your hair so it's literally usually just wear and tear and there's nothing you're doing wrong...it is what it is.

Thanks for the video. You may want to try Dollylocks shampoo or Kottyboy dreadlocks shampoo. Dish is working to clean your hair but I think your issues with thin ends and brokerage is from the Strong sulfates in the dish soap. I have very long locs almost to my bottom. I hate wash day. It’s so much work. I don’t use any conditioner ever. I only use dollylocks dreadlocks shampoo with their detox kits. I use natural aloe Vera plant. I Mix it in a blender with water and put it in a spray bottle with a few drops of lavender and rosemary essential oil. I have been doing this for the last two years of my 8 year loc Journey. Noticed a big difference with no more thinning or breakage.

Your dreadlocks looks so healthy. I've had trouble with built-up lint, I've locks my hair since 2013 my hair should be now down my back. Because I've been picking the ends out and picking lint out I've had to cut a lot of it off my ends the problem right now where I've undone the ends to take out the lint my locs have come undone at the ends my hair is straight I'm mixed race my hair was very long when I started off with two Twist over the time, I had to cut it from the end up to make it look like locks. I had 220 locks over the time wherever loud people entrusted them to do my hair interlocking it I have joined some of my locks together so I think I've got 200 locks now . I'm doing my hair myself because I find when people do my hair they join the locks together you are so right my hair had change colour with the weather and the seawater . I interlock my hair because twist and palm does not stay in my hair. I'm just trying to learn how to crochet 8 into my hair any ideas. I love your video. And yeah that's an English show we watch it over here.

I am multiracial and I have wanted locs for almost my entire life; however, because of my hair texture I’m fearful of my locs looking like a white person‘s hair looks in locs. I am glad that my grandson is confident at such a young age and has started his loc journey. 🥰

My loc journey is more than 25 years. LOCS are high maintenance especially when you have a lot of hair. Most people think it’s less maintenance but that’s not the case at all. When she was washing her hair that pain in her neck is real. And your arms get very tired. And unless you find someone good to maintain your hair if you do your LOCS yourself it takes hours to retwist and hours to dry. Just thought I’d share my 2 cents worth. The more you know.

Hi, my natural hair color changes because of the sun as well, and I was told to use a natural Aloe Vera spray, personally I use Grean Leaf Naturals, from Amazon. It’s good for your skin too. I easily tan in the summertime and my hair gets lighter from the sun, which causes damage to my ends.
I use conditioner BUT only when I henna/indigo my locs or dye them. I get a squeeze bottle 16 oz from the dollar store, I add about 1 tbsp of conditioner and add water, aloe vera juice or distilled rosewater or a combo of all to the conditioner. This avoids the buildup and it still conditions. I do a diy fabric softener from white vinegar/cheap conditioner/water and that's how I knew diluting the conditioner a lot would still work on my locs.
Now this is my hair goal for sureee!! I started mine just over 2 weeks ago and I’m happily getting used to the journey, I’m used to have long extensions to my ass, and it feels like a restart but, it was time, I said for years I’d have twists so yeah!! As for the thinning of the ends I wouldn’t worry about it, as long as I wasn’t balding/thinning at the roots! I like the tip of coiling the roots when re twisting, yesss Beautiful and so versatile, Thankyou for these tips!! 🥰🥰😘
I'm starting my journey next week Feb 11th I'm confused rather to use coils or 2 strand twist especially since I work out alot! I heard her say two strand twist.

My loctitian said that the brown ends of the hair are caused by the dead hair in the locs losing their pigment. The more you know!

Best hair video I have seen, I started my locs 21 months ago and everything that you said, I can totally relate, I for one love changing my styles and I have been enjoying my locs, I so feel ya when you said either cut your loose natural hair or find something low maintenance, which is where I was at when I decided to loc my hair. Thanks for the no conditioner tip because I was wondering what I was doing wrong with my washes to have white roots when I'm done. Love your locs, the color looks great btw 👌.

Thinning is usually caused from interlocking. Speaking from 10 years of experience. . . Its why I switched to twsting

Great video. Some of the thinning you are seeing in your locs could be from brushing. Brushing locs can cause thinning. Just a helpful tip. ❤️

For the thin areas you can repair them with hair and a crochet hook. Either one of the locs you cut off or hair you buy. There's a UA-cam channel by a man named Chris McDred, he's a loctition and educator in Dubai and he has amazing tutorials. At least you can just cut only the end off to use to work into a thin spot rather than cut it so short. I think it's a fairly common problem with locs of all types and lengths.

Your hair is BEAUTIFUL AND GORGEOUS. I have sister locks and believes that locks should be kept clean. I also avoid using conditioner on my hair.
