I don't care what the world thinks. I drove the first gen E85 Z4 and the S2K multiple times. And I will take that E85 Z4 every time. It was that damn good!
Less room and heavier than E85. More of a GT. If you want the pure driving experience, the E85 is the one to go. Try and find one with M seats. Hugely improves the experience
@beschuitfluiter Nah e89 is objectively better. And IMO easier to keep on the road (as in maintenance). These are lifestyle cars. There's much better roadsters out there for fun.
The back cupholder bit / storage console whatever it was , HAD ME DYING ALONG WITH YOU . James you slayed me with “lovely steering wheel” outta nowhere 😂😂😂😂😂
As an engineer who owns a 2004 BMW Z4 3.0 (manual), you guys were killing me trying to open the *LOCKED* center console!! I was literally yelling at you-begging you-to stop! I guess your abuse of the poor thing is a testament to how very secure the lock on that little storage space is. Props to BMW engineering…it’s Throttle House-proof!!😂😂😂
I was unsure about the G29's design until one evening three years ago I saw one in person in a beautiful silvery-beige metallic paint. It is one of maybe 3 BMWs you can get new that I don't consider to be crimes against car design.
I've still got a Z4 coupe that I've owned for 15 years. Still a fantastic little car, and I'm loathe to switch it for something more modern, it still stands up today as a great sports car
When I was 18 I worked as a Jimmy John’s delivery driver in SoCal, had an 05 Z4. Driving that everyday, top down, blasting music with my car toys amp and subs, such a vibe ✌️
The E85 was ahead of its time. Beautiful fun car that still keeps up with modern stuff, a mint example is not too expensive to buy, cheap to run, fairly reliable and can use it as a daily. I chose a manual one with the N52 2.5si instead of an mx-5 while shopping for a fun sports roadster and I don't think I'll ever sell it, I never imagined it was that good. Might consider getting the new manual M40i but I don't think I'm going to love it as much as the E85.
The reason I know James and I would get along aside from a shared enthusiasm of cars is that he is enough of a fan of Carl Sagan to dedicate his license plate to the man. A kindred spirit indeed.
Ohh my goodness lads 👏👏👏👏 How do you guys come up with these intros? 😂 Both of you work together like two peas in a pod on camera reviewing the vehicles and It's done with such humor and flow. When it comes to the TopGear/GT lads, everyone seems to think it takes three presenters to have the right amount of chemistry, but I think that those people are wrong! As we see every week Thomas and James prove them wrong, that TopGear/GT chemistry can be done with only two presenters! Top work lads and God bless 🙌
Ah the M54B30, my first car was an E39 530i with that engine. A sweet six that was pretty linear and didn't mind frequent trips to redline. Coupled to the automatic, it felt a little floppy, but it was the perfect amount of power for a 17 year old car enthusiast to toy around with.
My M54B30 is positive displacement supercharged with a whipple. It's seen lots of miles (MANY on track). It's a gem. Just needs love and a wallet. Neglect is never good for any motor.
Those E85/86 Z4's are still some of the nicest looking, well built and fun cars in existence. For the money, there is nothing better. If there weren't so many of them, they would be worth a fortune! Each new generation enhances their appeal by making them look even better. The newest gen, what even is that?
Don't forget that a few years later, the 3.0si trim replaced the M54 with the N52, which is lighter and more powerful with a broader torque curve! Haven't looked up prices on those recently, but probably not much more than the '03 reviewed here.
I love these reviews, very relatable and relevent! Keep it up! I have always owned a NA/NB miatas and Z4s, I've had 1.6l and 1.8l miatas. Ive had both a 2005 2.5l z4 m54b25 and 2007 3.0si z4 with the n52 engine. I recently got rid of my 07 z4 3.0si after putting 40k+ miles on it (130k on the ODO) to get a ND2 miata and have not looked back since. both my Z's have had the sport package (6spd manual, BMW recaro's, different suspension.) I first got the z4 because I wanted a "faster" miata without stressing the engine or reducing reliability. BUT the suspension geometry is just different AND the weight difference is huge considering these are cars under 300hp. I eventually got rid of my miata and daily'd the z4's for a while, but I always kept chasing the feeling of miata. I put KW suspension, turner monoball LCA and RTA's, grippier tires, sway bars, and wheels but it still just wasn't a miata -Barely any after market. You have to either use e46 parts or e90 parts depending on the year you get, but even then there are some specific parts that seem like it would work on a e46/e90 but doesn't work on the z4 due to certain minuscule differences in tolorances. - NO LSD option unless you get the M -Sport seats HURT HURT HURT, if you are anything under 180lbs and don't fill in the seats you will slide around on the leather(wish they had suede middle inserts, or a cloth sport seat option), the bolstering is so far out it doesn't really feel like its there. -Did I say no LSD unless you get M or swap in a e46 M rearsubframe? -if you get it to just to enjoy it in stock form then its fine how it is! but does lack a lot of potential in the aftermarket performance scene. ( if you make regular wages, and don't want to spend 6-8k on a supercharger kit that isn't carb legal or doesn't include labor) - LOVED the M54 and N52 engine best engines ive ever had, they felt so athletic and I never felt bad for pushing them all day at an Autox or track session. - OH DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE SHIFTER FEEL OF A BMW AFTER DRIVING A MIATA FOR SO MANY YEARS. NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING could ever make a BMW shifter feel like a miata shifter. TLDR: I love my z4's :D The ND2 miata has a 6spd, lsd, RF TOP, 181hp, 2 seater, Huge aftermarket, no BMW tax. Plus I drove 2k miles around Oregon in 4 days, without ever being uncomfortable in the stock seats. ;) if you are considering getting a e85 z4 03-08 I would get the facelift 06-08 with the n52 engine and 3.0si engine making 255~hp, I wouldn't worry about the sport package if you are looking to modify as the recaros are super heavy and electric. I would just get a more comfortable, better fitting aftermarket bucket seat like the recaro sportster GT. OEM suspension is nice, but upgrade to ohlins and it will feel more connected to the road and less thrashy, ALL OEM bushings are fine. if you are looking to get and LSD I would find a spare 2.5l diff with the shorter 3.46 gearing compared to the 3.23 that comes with the 3.0si, send it to differential shop and pop it in and forget about it. and your total will come out to about 20k-40k including the car depending on how you modified. OR OR OR get a ND2 miata w/ club package and forget about all the mods you did to the z4.
I have owned 7 different bmw z4 and only drove a miata for a few minutes I enjoyed it and can imagine owning a miata beside my z The most interesting thing for me is the playfullness of the miata, you can throw it in the turns and its tail is playfull and coming fast and controlable With the z4 you kinda have too much grip, its alwAys so serious like you are chasing times
The z4 doesnt get the appreciation it deserves. I feel like it has the same reputation as the audi TT as a "hairdressers car" but the fact you can still get it in a manual shows its a really great enthusiast car
I really enjoy when you guys test affordable, or at least semi-affordable cars. Not a fan of the Bangle styling, but otherwise...really like the 2003 Z4.
The old Z4 got a whole lot better than that 3.0. The 3.0iS, the M versions, and the Alpina Roadster were great. The M version even swapped the steering for hydraulic.
@Donax695 I had the M version until a few years ago and I regret selling it. I sort of rage quit the car after the hydraulics for the top failed twice in 8 months.
Oh man. I never thought as a grownass man, I could still laugh so hard when Thomas and James were struggling to open the center console storage. This was gold. Jim Carrey kinda moment.
I had the original Z4 for 5 years. Two roof motors due to the water ingress. Steering would become very heavy and notchy (very dangerous at high speed as it was so difficult to make minor adjustments) on hot days. I'm sure I read this was because of hydraulic fluid expanding- this video just taught me the steering was electric so now I have no idea what that issue was. Dashboard rattled, roof squeaked constantly when it was folded. Passenger window would get stuck- again on hot days only. Best car I ever owned 😆
Relocating the motor from the well to the trunk would’ve taken care of that problem. Sticky steering… don’t have that, thank the powers that be! There are some solutions to that as well, but I only know of German shops that can solve that.
Water drains at rear have rubber covers that get clogged up with dirt remove them or clean once year no need to worry about relocating the motor 2 min job to clean
@@Carl-g5h Mine were replaced with the modified type but I'd recommend cleaning more often than once a year and that still might not be enough to stop that stupid plastic bag around the motor trapping moisture..

I recently bought off an action the same one, 3.0i 6speed manual in black but interior is light brown, 165k miles (265k km) for 2400 US dollars, runs almost like new, no mechanical issues (only wear on interiors) and I'm enjoying as my new daily drive. Best purchase ever.
I have the Z4M Coupe (s54 engine) and it's a honestly a game changing experience, nothing comes close without spending 5+ times the money. I daily a b58 but the s54 in that chassis is truly something special.

A Z4 for $20k and 62,200 km (38,525 mi), what an opportunity for someone wanting a summer roadster for crushing some back country roads. I love the interior of the older Z4, it is clean, simple and driver focused. One thing I’ve learned through the years, take what journalists tell you with a grain of salt, UA-camrs included (sorry guys). The average person will never have the opportunity to drive a plethora of cars like a journalists or UA-camr, who I believe develop a twisted sense of what an average guy car should be. The new M40i dash is unnecessarily busy and the design is OK, I much prefer the older Z4. Bang for the buck, the Z4 is a bargain. If I was looking for a new roadster with a $100k+ budget, I’d be over at the Porsche dealership.
Wow can’t believe how much you New-Worlder ex-colonials have to pay for your used cars! A nice 2003 3.0 is a £5,000 car here in the UK ($6250 US or $8,000 CAD). Which is even weirder when you appreciate we have to pay about 10% more for them when new…
@@neilturner6749I lived in the UK for a number of years and would agree. Cars in the UK depreciate much faster, for reasons I never quite understood. One difference I have found with Canadian cars vs US cars or even UK cars is the overall spec. When you are getting into a BMW, Porsche or Merc, the Canadian cars tend to have a lot more options on them. We have a smaller market with limited driving months and I think the higher specs are needed to encourage some buyers.
@@bluesky9093 it could be also because they are right hand drive so there is limited market for them in Europe. For example here in Poland there was some time that RHD cars were being imported because they were cheaper and even with the switch it was profitable. Although now we can register rhd cars so there is no need for the switch.

I own a 22 Z4 M40i fully spec’d. Absolutely love the car.
The storage cubby bit - perfection, thanks for leaving it in 😂
You really pulled off that intro. True friends with benefits LOL!
This video brought me so much joy. You guys are doing what you were meant to do.
Thomas and James is so funny in every single intro 😂👍
I was unsure about the G29's design until one evening three years ago I saw one in person in a beautiful silvery-beige metallic paint. It is one of maybe 3 BMWs you can get new that I don't consider to be crimes against car design.
I've still got a Z4 coupe that I've owned for 15 years. Still a fantastic little car, and I'm loathe to switch it for something more modern, it still stands up today as a great sports car
E85 > E46
Best intro to date, and I love that you guys leave in the bloopers (Console not opening). This is what sets you apart! Throttle House is my favorite.
Speaking of bloopers, there just HAD to be bloopers for that intro. I would love to have seen that at the end of the video.
The e89 z4 is for me the most beautiful BMW cabrio ever made.
Achhem..Z8?
The older Z4 has aged very well.
Except for the front end looks.
@@mediocreman2E89 fixes that
Was out driving a Z4 this morning, this was perfect!
Big love for the OG Z4.. You missed a trick to not test the facelift'd Z4 3.0 with the newer N52, it takes it to a new level.
Great content, guys..!
bruh the full minute of them trying to get the center thing open 😂 then just " lovely steering wheel" 😂😂
You are definitely the best car journalists in the internet! Best since old Top Gear!!!
definitely
ok, that intro was amazing
From the skit to the editing to the bit about the center storage. Fantastic film boys
I remember when the 03 Z4 came out and I remember watching those Clive Owen BMW "movies." I was drooling over this car as a kid.
Omg the storage compartment scene.... THIS is why we love you all so much!
The reason I know James and I would get along aside from a shared enthusiasm of cars is that he is enough of a fan of Carl Sagan to dedicate his license plate to the man. A kindred spirit indeed.
The way James said, "And I'm Jamesssss..." with that cheerful smile after the intro made me ponder... 🤔
I hope they dont forget they are married.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I could see that intro finale coming from a mile away... but y'all still pulled it out. Stroke of genius.
Thought u were clever huh? We saw what you did there😂
Over my many years of purchasing BMWs I must say I prefer the older ones over the newer ones. I've always been a stickler for long-term reliability.
I've been watching your videos for years, and that is without doubt the best intro yet!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
FINALLY new vs old z4 video. Was thinking the other day if you guys would ever do this
Old z4 is an incredible car
Those E85/86 Z4's are still some of the nicest looking, well built and fun cars in existence. For the money, there is nothing better. If there weren't so many of them, they would be worth a fortune! Each new generation enhances their appeal by making them look even better. The newest gen, what even is that?
Don't forget that a few years later, the 3.0si trim replaced the M54 with the N52, which is lighter and more powerful with a broader torque curve! Haven't looked up prices on those recently, but probably not much more than the '03 reviewed here.
Had a black 3.0i Z4 in black with red interior ..... it was AWESOME !!!!
I had a Space Grey, 3.0i 2004 Z4 with the dream red interior. What a car!
@@brentdiez7012 my exact car ;)
There Is a guy near my home Who drives a z4 4 cylinder manual as a Daily. Its not the fanciest car, but damn It looks good
The video had my crying laughing throughout. Yalls chemistry is unmatched keep it going as long as you can 💪🏾🙏🏾
I love these reviews, very relatable and relevent! Keep it up!
I have always owned a NA/NB miatas and Z4s, I've had 1.6l and 1.8l miatas. Ive had both a 2005 2.5l z4 m54b25 and 2007 3.0si z4 with the n52 engine.
I recently got rid of my 07 z4 3.0si after putting 40k+ miles on it (130k on the ODO) to get a ND2 miata and have not looked back since. both my Z's have had the sport package (6spd manual, BMW recaro's, different suspension.)
I first got the z4 because I wanted a "faster" miata without stressing the engine or reducing reliability. BUT the suspension geometry is just different AND the weight difference is huge considering these are cars under 300hp. I eventually got rid of my miata and daily'd the z4's for a while, but I always kept chasing the feeling of miata. I put KW suspension, turner monoball LCA and RTA's, grippier tires, sway bars, and wheels but it still just wasn't a miata
-Barely any after market. You have to either use e46 parts or e90 parts depending on the year you get, but even then there are some specific parts that seem like it would work on a e46/e90 but doesn't work on the z4 due to certain minuscule differences in tolorances.
- NO LSD option unless you get the M
-Sport seats HURT HURT HURT, if you are anything under 180lbs and don't fill in the seats you will slide around on the leather(wish they had suede middle inserts, or a cloth sport seat option), the bolstering is so far out it doesn't really feel like its there.
-Did I say no LSD unless you get M or swap in a e46 M rearsubframe?
-if you get it to just to enjoy it in stock form then its fine how it is! but does lack a lot of potential in the aftermarket performance scene. ( if you make regular wages, and don't want to spend 6-8k on a supercharger kit that isn't carb legal or doesn't include labor)
- LOVED the M54 and N52 engine best engines ive ever had, they felt so athletic and I never felt bad for pushing them all day at an Autox or track session.
- OH DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE SHIFTER FEEL OF A BMW AFTER DRIVING A MIATA FOR SO MANY YEARS. NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING could ever make a BMW shifter feel like a miata shifter.
TLDR: I love my z4's :D
The ND2 miata has a 6spd, lsd, RF TOP, 181hp, 2 seater, Huge aftermarket, no BMW tax. Plus I drove 2k miles around Oregon in 4 days, without ever being uncomfortable in the stock seats. ;)
if you are considering getting a e85 z4 03-08 I would get the facelift 06-08 with the n52 engine and 3.0si engine making 255~hp, I wouldn't worry about the sport package if you are looking to modify as the recaros are super heavy and electric.
OR OR OR
get a ND2 miata w/ club package and forget about all the mods you did to the z4.
I have owned 7 different bmw z4 and only drove a miata for a few minutes
I enjoyed it and can imagine owning a miata beside my z
The most interesting thing for me is the playfullness of the miata, you can throw it in the turns and its tail is playfull and coming fast and controlable
With the z4 you kinda have too much grip, its alwAys so serious like you are chasing times
Being a "Go manual or go home" Englishman, can't say I've ever done that what was done in the intro... 🤣🤣🤣
The z4 doesnt get the appreciation it deserves. I feel like it has the same reputation as the audi TT as a "hairdressers car" but the fact you can still get it in a manual shows its a really great enthusiast car
Hairdressers have great taste in cars ngl 💅
As a proud of owner of Z4, cruising and even racing it. I have to attest that these boys nailed it. It's underappreciated.
It’s mehh bordering on ugly looking (new one). And old one was slow and unreliable. Either make it good looking or make it interesting.
Hairdressers car.......never
@@guyrippon6085 you just dont know what you are talking about and obviously haver never driven one
There is nothing wrong with Thomas… shift away my man. Left foot salute 🫡 🦶
I really enjoy when you guys test affordable, or at least semi-affordable cars. Not a fan of the Bangle styling, but otherwise...really like the 2003 Z4.
That used Z4 is easily the best looking generation. The lines are just so fluid and pleasant.
"The Roadster...... For Men"
Z4 is the new Triumph CONFIRMED.
28:26 Absolutely demolished me
Old z4 is such a chill car. Brings me back to my vacation I had in Greece cruising around in it
That intro was INSANEEE
I have to say, James in particular was brilliant in this
Edit: Both of you were brilliant in this
That opening... I did not see that coming! Fantastic!
The old Z4 got a whole lot better than that 3.0. The 3.0iS, the M versions, and the Alpina Roadster were great. The M version even swapped the steering for hydraulic.
I love my Si, N52 makes perfect sense in this car, Alpina is cool but stupidly rare. M version is something I dream off
@Donax695 I had the M version until a few years ago and I regret selling it. I sort of rage quit the car after the hydraulics for the top failed twice in 8 months.
@@danielpope6498 That is understandable reason, I also had my own set of kinda regular but still annoying problems.
Was about to hit my second like when you hit that manual on James
Oh man. I never thought as a grownass man, I could still laugh so hard when Thomas and James were struggling to open the center console storage. This was gold. Jim Carrey kinda moment.
How do you guys do it? You keep coming up with funnier and funnier stuff all of the time!! Thank you! A happy subscriber.
Been looking into getting one because everyone overlooks them, now they’re gonna go up in price thanks guys 😢
As a veteran of the most homoerotic branch of the United States military, that intro got me into gear. 😉
Semper Fi
Well the Marines are a department of the Navy. So, makes sense.
@@swedething I sold it 9 years ago so I'm not too worried but at the time I was told the steering column fix was about £2-£3k 😬
Water drains at rear have rubber covers that get clogged up with dirt remove them or clean once year no need to worry about relocating the motor 2 min job to clean
one roof motor for me thus far!
@@Carl-g5h Mine were replaced with the modified type but I'd recommend cleaning more often than once a year and that still might not be enough to stop that stupid plastic bag around the motor trapping moisture..
Just bought a 3.0I 6 speed manual in black with red leather seats... Aux port, roof motor relocation to boot.... and BC Coilovers and some intake foam already removed.... all for £1800... I will never part with it... Just awesome for the money!!!
It feels so connected, simple and mechanical..... Will not be repeated..... AND looks brilliant now!!!
You'd pay 15k for the Z4M.... These people are being VERY dishonest here 😂 Trying to save face for the new one...
It actually shocked me to hear them say the price of the old one is 20k cos I was thinking they were like 2 or 3 grand here😂highest I've seen them is 10 I think.
@@Afraz_9n3 You can get the z4M at that price!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
They are being very dishonest and a bit too kind to the new one.... As a 3.0i in the Uk is anywhere from £2500 to £5k MAX!!!...
Mines was £1800 😂💨.. Basically a free car in comparison...
You got a steal! Great car. Welcome to the E85 enjoyment club.
@@milkforcoffee Thank you 😎❤💨
I recently bought off an action the same one, 3.0i 6speed manual in black but interior is light brown, 165k miles (265k km) for 2400 US dollars, runs almost like new, no mechanical issues (only wear on interiors) and I'm enjoying as my new daily drive. Best purchase ever.
I have the Z4M Coupe (s54 engine) and it's a honestly a game changing experience, nothing comes close without spending 5+ times the money. I daily a b58 but the s54 in that chassis is truly something special.
In the intro, that look on Jame's face, was immediately followed by the TH logo with, "Car Reviews Evolved." I am glad you do not take yourselves too seriously. Stay goofy. I appreciate your reviews.
Which is even weirder when you appreciate we have to pay about 10% more for them when new…
And yes I recently bought a Boxster GTS over a M40i without much deliberation!
@@neilturner6749Great choice 🎉 congrats
Although now we can register rhd cars so there is no need for the switch.
damn that intro is one of the best from TH
Last time I came this early, Thomas was shifting with my knob.
this is comedy gold
🤨
i love this, its obvious which car is faster. but doing classics vs new school models is something you cant miss.
This is the Z review I’ve been waiting for! You guys are the best!
