  • This video is to demonstrate you do not need high rpm's from your throttle or the use of the rear brake if you spend the time developing proper clutch control in the first place. This is just a demonstration and I am not saying you should never use your throttle or rear brakes, just don't depend on them to learn simple u turns as its not necessary if you first develop clutch control. There is an easy way to do this from the start. You will need to raise rpms if your riding competitions for time or in extremely tight turns such as less than 17 feet.

I have seen this guy doing a demo at a harley dealership in Houston. I actually saw him ask for a couple of volunteers and he taught them to make 18 foot u turns like this in about 20-25 minutes. They were definitely not as smoothe as he was, but they were doing it. He has a great teaching method which i have never seen anyone teach, but I am now seeing various other youtube guys talking about not using rear brake or higher rpms after years of saying it was necessary and im sure they have seen this guy now. This guy is good!

Hello Bill, Thank you for the kind words. Yes I have done quite a few demos at dealerships and other places. The technique has caught on over the last 10 yrs as I started putting videos out back in 2013 on a very very small channel I had then.

Well, there's no discussion about it, you've made your point! No tricks with secretly clutching or throttling, you switched of the ignition and still made your tight U-turns. Thanks for showing this and taking away the sharp edges of this exercise!!

I think the larger point here is that momentum is required for a tight U turn, if not from a half-clutch then from entering a turn with some amount of speed.
But here is a problem, a rider may not always be able to preserve enough momentum to execute a turn this way in traffic.
This is a worthwhile trick to know but I hardly agree that it revolutionizes U turns

The point is total clutch control is where it begins. And yes momentum is all you need, but momentum will come from proper clutch engagement and high rpms are not needed to do it. 3rdly as the video shows i dont recommend doing this with the bike turned off, its a demonstration for the aforememtioned points, and not meant for riders to do in traffic. Its not about revolutionizing, its about training, developing total control on the bike for safety not just at slow speeds but higher speeds as slow speeds relate to higher speed advanced skills such as emergency threshold braking, braking in a curve, curve negotiatiom and obstacle avoidance. So many who attempt to learn slow speed skills are overwhelmed when its so simple if you start and understand clutch control first, then learn proper throttle engagement and then understading why, and when to use the rear brake as opposed to using it as a crutch to make simple slow controlled maneuvers. Then as speeds imcrease you have muc more skill, balance and control with all 3 clutch, throttle and rear brakes When you use the rear brake as crutch not only do you put unnecessary wear and tear on the bike, but you sacrifice your skill level development. But if you dont mind replacing brakes quickly and burning clutch plates then definitely raise those rpms with the throttle while using improper clutch engagement and make sure to ride those brakes and look and sound completely foolish. But then again as motor officer instructor with all the hours of training and practice i have completed, and 750,000 miles worth of riding experiences through all types of traffic and weather conditions in the 3rd largest city in the nation everyday for 10 years, i may be mis-informed. Ride safe!

This is interesting. The only time I’ve heard of using rpm and rear brake was for slow, straight line riding

I got into a vicious argument with an instructor about not using the clutch and high revs of the engine to make turns. I was using the throttle just above idle speed and giving the bike some momentum using throttle blips to get the bike moving fast enough and then easing off to turn using the bars into a smooth curve. The guy literally started screaming at me in front of the entire training compound to use the clutch to feed more power into the rear wheel. He wanted above 3000 rpms and using the clutch half open to power the drive wheel. I was trying to save his transmission and clutch by doing it my way and he just wouldn't listen. Much smoother to use slight throttle on higher powered engines above 600cc and use the bikes momentum and inert mass to turn smoothly into a curve.
