  • Even if Cipher didn't partake in the Belkan War it seems very unlikely that Belka could have won the conflict. In this video I discuss the several reasons why Belka's objectives were basically impossible.

We will use the information you give us to make radical reforms in our military doctrines strategy and tactics. Ultimately once they're done we will retake the southern lands and Belka will once again reign supreme.

    • @armedmage
      @armedmage 5 років тому +31

I think most of the antagonist countries in Ace Combat follow the same playbook for defeat:
      1) Expecting to win the war by striking first in a very blitzkrieg-like manner, and not being prepared a prolonged conflict
      2) Favoring quantity over quality for most of their air force, save a few elite squadrons.
      3) Over-reliance on 2 or 3 expensive and unproven "super weapons"
      4) Suffering from internal civil unrest due to bad economies or factionalism.

One often overlooked factor is that Belka failed to maintain an independent aerospace industry.
Don't throw stones at me yet, Gründer Industries paid shills, at least let me finish my argument first.
By the time the war started, the majority of Belkan Air Force fighters consist of aircrafts designed in Osea (think the F-4s, F-15s etc) or Yuktobania (think the Su-27s, MiG-29s etc). This initially had the benefit of having half of your fleet intact if a superpower conducts an arms embargo, and this was effective during the Cold War. However, as soon as Yuktobania decided to ally itself with Osea, it all went down the drain.
Bm-335 was crucially the last bomber aircraft Belka ever produced. Since then they failed to come up with a new design and are forced to keep buying Yuke bombers. That design know-how was lost since.
Instead, Belka went for unproven next-gen tech such as the aerial warship, onboard lasers, and artificial intelligence. Belkan AI was simply not ready until at least 1998, by which point they were first combat tested. Aerial warships, after a long development, eventually require an entire air wing to protect and by 1995 it was not evident. Lasers, on the other hand, could have been used by the Belkan Navy as the one advantage Osea could not match even in 2019. Belka however did not put that much thought in its navy and as a result Belkan ships were never equipped with lasers. In fact, it is a shame that even today, most of the world's militaries who fit lasers on their fighters don't mount them on their ships.

You're correct on that one even the Schnee team EA-6B Prowler is made in Osean Federation which would make Parts hard for them to acquire. In Yuktobania that would be the Il-2 Su-10 Tu-14 Yak-9 Yak-3 Mig-15 I-215 as the equivalent

Let's not forget the elephant in the room hiding behind the window curtain. The existence of the 6th Tactical Fighter Squadron. The Schwarze Squadron. The whole reason the Belkan Air Force employed ruthless mercenaries like Dominic Zubov is because the morale of the pilots was so low, that they resorted to desertion. And having escapee killers like the aforementioned Vulture is to keep them in line. Sending the Vulture and the Schwarze Squadron to intercept deserters is served as an example to discourage potential deserters. This situation is similar to Operation Iraqi freedom. The Iraqi army was large enough to put up a descent resistance against the American invasion, but it suffered from low morale attributed to maltreatment, nepotism and lack of cooperation between branches. So the Baath party's radical wing, the Fedayeen Saddam, loyal only to Saddam Hussein, are employed to round up any deserters and units turning their weapons against their allies, and execute them.

Great Video, im now finished watching it and i agree on all of your named points.
One Interessting Point though is that Osea being allied with many smaller Nations had a major Impact on the Belkan Advance which, and that i surely can say was more motivated than the 2019 Erusean Assault on Osean and IUN Airbases.
Oseas and its allies Joint Arms doctrin is what really makes the differences. Erusea had to much trust in its Arsenalbirds they had stolen. Belka was arrogant with its Air Force. Yuktobanias Army and Air Force also lacked of support for one another.
However Osea and its alllies had well coordinated Forces. In belka this is shown by the Offensive campaign. In Yuktobania the entire defensive war and the landing in Yuktobania have been a proof of it.
And later in 2019 the Outstanding Coordination between the IUN, Osean Forces and the LRSSG crushed Eruseas Drone Fleet.
Oseas Adaptability also were crucial in both belka and Usea. while Osea was able to repell the belkan offensive. Osea and the IUN went on the counteroffensive in erusea due to changed long range tactics, follwed up by Ground troops reclaiming the land. occupied by Erusean forces.
In both Cases, Belka And later erusea used desperate meassures such as Nuclear weapons or a simultainosley Anti Sat Attack(And IRBMs) to hold off Osea from counter Blitzkrieging them.
All in All the Osean and Allied Command structures do work way better than the Agressors Command.
And even in failure(Two Pronged Strategy) Osea won vital information in how eruseas defenses worked and bypassed them with the Implementation of the LRSSG.
Also Oseas Ability to strike back against Yuktobania is a sign of an overall well command structure.
In Belka this was shown by Solis ortus were the Paratroopers and Air support were well coordinated.
Belkas,Yuktobanias and Eruseas Failure point was Arrogance and Overestimation of their own skills. This lead in all Cases to their Military defeat. Yuktobania however, has a special situation due to the Conspiracy. in Erusea however this does not apply, since the lead goverment has been Willingly let themselves manipulate into the war with Usea. The Arrogance by posessing the Abirds or Excalibur or the Scinfaxi made them careless. Osea however did used the Arkbird for example wisely as a counter to the scinfaxi. the later on usage of it for a false assault on yuktobania however was also the part of the conspiracy.
The whole Osea-Yuktobania conspiracy is a different story.
But its really good to see how the Agressors in Ace Combat are arrogant and rely to much on new techs and superweapons, instead of a good chain of command and the war of combined Arms.

Would be nice if Ace Combat 8 (whenever it comes out) takes place on the Verusan continent (it's the only continent we have yet to really explore). before the Belkan war like mid 1980's to early 1990's. As for the separation between North and South Belka, I think it's basically because of the Waldreich Mountains. I believe such a big series of high mountains are solid enough to separate them not only geographically, but also psychologically.
Also, as the mountains are between them, it is unnatural to assume they were originally in one society. Ancient civilization in North Belka probably couldn't have such a power as it could make one nation over the mountains, so I think it's rather natural to assume that South Belka was just the oldest "colony" of theirs. For reallife example, we can see the conflicts between UK and Ireland(was a part of UK for a long time).

Great analysis. But let me make some additions.
Osea also issued a Rearmament Declaration in 1992, as such it had thrown significant money into modernising it's military several years before the war.
Assumption that it was wrong to field the huge number of old aircraft is itself wrong. They had a large stock of obsolete, but still good enough for some missions equipment available in the reserve right now at a low cost. While the industrial and financial capabilities to build a substantial number of modern planes in just a few years was at least doubtful. They had to show everything they had, and fielding old aircraft didn't really affect production of modern planes. It was just rational.
About Northern and Southern Belka. Since Belka is loosely based on Germany, we can see them like the Northern and Southern Germany, (Prussia and Bavaria mainly). They are both German in culure, but the Northerners were protestant and militaristic, while the Southerners were catholic and not warmongers. The dialects are also somewhat different. Just like Germany, Belka was united by the Northerners. So... The Southerners in Belka were just not that militaristic and may even had some dislike of "Prussian militarism" analogue and to some degree their own ethnic nationalism, but still they would prefer to be Belkans, not, say, Oseans.

Serves to show, Waldemarr Rald was just as bonkers as Hitler, just not in the genocidal part. If Belka had decided to strike Sapin first, ally with Ustio, establish a solid front to attack the eastern countries, and THEN attack Osea, with Yuktobania as support, the world of Strangereal would be mostly Belka, by now.
But it's really interesting that this puts the lore a bit into a deeper perspective. It's really interesting that a militaristic strategy so flawed was pictured quite nicely, and it shows in Gelb 2's interview.

Belka was betrayed and simply ran out of "money" to fight the war. It is worth asking where the real fault for the War of 1995 belonged to. No surprise that OBC's coverage of the war present Belka being the aggressor is extremely short sighted. There was civil unrest in the former Belkan territories, caused by civil activists and NGO groups playing both sides. They could well have been justified retaliating proportionately to the unprovoked aggression by the neighboring countries.
-Discovery of natural resources? Try neighbors looting the resources
-[FF] event to turn the international narrative against [target] country
The committee of international banking financiers decided to pull the credit lines on Belka when the offensive stalled in the wake of Galm Squadron and the private military contractors operating in Ustio. The economy gets crippled and war industry fails to keep up with attrition. This shadowy group of bankers played both sides, providing "humanitarian development" and "military assistance" loans to Belka's opportunistic enemies as well: Osea and Yuktobania.
-War is the banker's richest harvest
The Seven Suns incident that reduced most of south and central Belka to wasteland, was either a desperately suicidal attempt to stop the empowered enemy advance into their home territory, or the shadow group's declaration to the world of what they will do to any country on Strangereal that dared to stray from their United World agenda.
-Could the Belkans develop nuclear weapons entirely on their own?
-Back channel to launder OSN and YKB WMD?
With Belka weakened, bought-out politicians from all sides, Osean corporate raiders and Yuktobanian oligarchs, whose allegiance is never doubted thanks to [propaganda] news media controlled narrative, seized the country and its technological assets. The proliferation of Belkan technology in subsequent wars was not a coincidence.
-South Belka/North Osea city Sudentor, a tech hub to export military technology?
All told, the next Ace Combat should be told from the Belkan perspective. An political and military thriller of epic proportions that includes the recapture of the government by the Knights of Belka, the dismantling of the hardline Osean control structure over the southern territories, and the ultimate goal of destroying the international banking financiers in a land never before explored in Ace Combat lore.

Scorched earth would have worked better. Back in the early 1900s, Canada's plan for war against the US was to invade on all fronts as far until resistance was met, then retreat back to the border wrecking infrastructure as they went. This would hamper any us invasion. They then relied on Britain shipping in huge armies.
Belka demonstrated huge success in rapid invasions. They should have kept that momentum up. Instead of holding on to all captured territory, withdraw fully at any counter attack, then launch another blitz catching whats left of the enemy in a cauldron.
Alternatively, Yuktobania seems to be the wild card. If they even stayed neutral, much of osea's resources would be committed to the cold war. I doubt they would spare a top of the line carrier.
If yuktobania stayed out and belka demonstrated the high cost of reconstruction if you manage to defeat them, then maybe they broker a peace.

Umberto Eco said it best when he wrote that fascists lose wars because "they are unable to objectively evaluate their opponents".
Belkan ideology prior to 1995 probably portrayed outsiders as both an important hyper-virulent scourge but also as weak, effeminate, and barbaric.
This stopped any attempts to reform military organization for joint operations, it implied a defensive or even defeatist attitude towards Belkan power vis a vis their enemies.

More importantly I think Belka counted on Yuktobanian support in the conflict. UYR rhetoric at the time suggested it condemned Osean activity in the region and sympathised with the Belkan cause, and even even if it didnt join in the fighting it would have been an essential supply partner. Once Yuktobania joined the allied forces, I think Belka was pretty much screwed.

I think the Belkan war is sorta similar to WW2, as Osea defeated Belka and helped the countries invaded by Belka while the US literally destroyed Nazi Germany and helped the countries in the war. Not only that, I may think that since Belka is an allegory for Nazi Germany, I think that Belka today would be very not very nationalist due to its past just like Germany, and I would also think it may possibly become an economic powerhouse too just like Germany...

You'd be surprised to know that Belka did the opposite of what N*zi Germany did with its Air Force and STILL LOST. Germany insisted on a small, peacetime Air Force at the start of the war (despite being aware that the Soviets were capable of training thousands of pilots east of the Urals) but when the losses started to mount they sent raw recruits en masse to fight veteran pilots of the Eastern and Western Fronts.

Belka should have cut the war in two phases, first anhilate quickly the eastern countries and sapin , and secondly 5 years after the first phase and serious preparations attack osea, using mercenaries in tactical ground attacks ( for air superiority, osea pay more). adfx would be ready in suffisant number, XB-O too and would burn to the ground all resisting osean cities, something to demorolize osean ground forces and force them to surrender.

I'd guess that the reason yuktobania was involved was that after belka fell apart the yukes found new strategic partners in the area. when belka invaded, yuktobania was forced to fight it's old ally or effectively lose all influence in the region.
