    My theory about the Arsenal birds is that their shields detonated the combustible parts on missiles and aircraft, not a physical energy shield of sorts, and that's why the bullet from the Stonehenge penetrated it, it was solid metal bullet flying at mach 5, just the speed alone would do that damage, and since it had no combustible parts, the shield couldn't detonate it, it fits everything in the game.

    The Lighthouse itself could have been fitted with very powerful lasers along its length, that could have zapped any aircraft or missile that it got line of sight on.
    Those shields would have also been handy.
    And drone swarms could have been ready to launch from nearby protected hangers, with a small number always out flying doing recon patrols.

    • @Santisima_Trinidad
      @Santisima_Trinidad 8 місяців тому +17

      The issue with that is how the lighthouse, as a static structure, would always be vulnerable to ground assualt, and if a large scale conflict broke out around it it could risk massive damageto its foundations, causing the whole structure to collapse. A series of high yield tactical explosives could easily have ruined any defensive emplacements surrounding it, and a decently large ground force would have been sufficient to storm the lighthouse afterwards.
      I also think it was fitted with drone hangers and laser systems anyway, the arsenal birds were just considered the primary defensive measures, because killing the enemy way away from the important thing is better than killing the enemy at the important thing, in general.

    • @GoldenSkies061
      @GoldenSkies061 8 місяців тому +6

      True, but static defenses would be useless for the imperialist purpose that the Arsenal Birds were designed for. The US Navy could rely on land-based airfields instead of using aircraft carriers if their goal was JUST to defend American soil, but it's not, so they don't.

      Putting weapons on a thing designed for peace and to retrieve resources for the world would make every country see you as The Bad Guy, and you'd lose the plausible deniability of it being a defensive/retaliatory war. It becomes clear that you just want to monopolize the elevator and probably always did. Instead of just being you versus one country - which you're still losing against - it becomes you versus the rest of the planet. And we've seen like four times how that worked out for the Belkans.

    @ultramarinus2478 8 місяців тому

    Good one bro.
    The Arsenal bird is interesting version of "flying aircraft carrier", wich answers the most problematic questions about the design:
    1) propulsion and power/fuel - solution picked is sufficient, although nuclear power might be better (number of smaller nuclear generators onboard, wich can be switched for newly fueled (or completely different principle) power module of the same shape - say fusion would be discovered in a decade after lift of, and can be utilized when needed).
    2) how to take off with aircraft much bigger than all runways on the world (only "better"---more advantageous to the machine and users--- solution i can think off is VTOL concept).
    3) how to replenish the equipment/ammunition, wich can not be produced "indefinetly" midflight
    4) how to connect/park/stack the fighter-drones on the mother/plane, ...
    4)a) altough IF the fighter-drones are connected SIDEWAYS (i.e. turned one side up, one side down), the wing could be twice (or in minimum one third more than) the original number...
    Me personally, would introduce one design feature, that might be of help with the "self repair" part, especially of the engines and plane surface - If the engines are housed in detachable streemlined pylons, wich can move on the surface of the airplane, you can simply "disconnect" whole engine, transport it to the repair facility, and after being repaired transport it back to the bird (wich would "reshuffle" the engine pods again, to gain optimal thrust and weight distribution with changed number of engines onboard. I mean - it is impossible with engine using fuel (because the fuel lines would mean extreme failure point), but when you need only supply electricity to the engine, it can be perfectly supplied during moving ON the superstructure (and locked to it befor it starts to proppel the plane). And the same system could be utilized for
    b) smaller repair bots (shaped to have extremely small airdrag) moving on fixed grid of rails situated OUTSIDE (on top of) the mothership, ment to cutt off the dammaged segment, transport modular replacement parts to the dammaged area and repair the dammages by reconnecting the newly replaced segment to the whole. Same robots could be used to do smaller repairs of dammaged fighter-drones, basically OUTSIDE the mother/plane.
    c) said "surface train carts" can be used for small local sensor clusters and/or point defense lasers, wich would MOVE on the surface of the mothership, to maximize the sensor clenliness and/or firepower in needed direction.

    Seems to me that one could develop a fuel system that didn’t require manual refueling.
    Assuming an atmosphere that has plenty of oxygen and water vapor, some combination of electrolysis or similar hydrogen and oxygen harvesting should be able to create one or more types of compressed Fuel for the drones. That’s taking advantage of the endless supply of electricity to ensure the drones are fully fueled.
    The only downside of this being that there would surely be some delay between using fuel and replacing it, so if you continually attacked, the drones would eventually run out of fuel while waiting for additional fuel to be manufactured on the flying ship.

    • @veryconcernedbread
      @veryconcernedbread 8 місяців тому

      Could work but seeing as the supply shuttles also carry ammo, engine lubricant & probably spare parts there may not have been enough space for an electrolysis plant & storage tanks that could feed 80 drones so it was more practical to simply use that space for a bigger supply pod because the arsenal bird would have been rendered combat ineffective after the loss of it's supply base regardless if it was self sufficient fuel wise or not.

    • @EliotHochberg
      @EliotHochberg 8 місяців тому

      @@veryconcernedbread did wonder about the supply of munitions for the Arsenal bird. Is that part of the fuel transfer when it gets resupplied?
      Alternatively, maybe all of the weaponry should be based on electrical systems. Of course, if it was far enough into the future that you had something a Star Trek transporter, then you could just manufacture whatever you need on the vehicle itself, and again all you need would be energy.
      But short of that, if you need physical munitions, you definitely need some kind of resupply run

    • @veryconcernedbread
      @veryconcernedbread 8 місяців тому

      @@EliotHochberg well it is primarily a drone carrier so it needs to rearm it's drones, plus it mostly relies on Air-to-air missiles, CIWS & long range airburst missiles to ward off air attacks with only the second one having direct energy weapons so running out of ammo is very much a concern. Plus, except for the insane superweapons born out of a lack of ability to mass-produce nuclear weapons the strangereal world is only a couple decades ahead of us.

    A weapon that has one way of being reloaded is a weapon that’s going to jam 90% of the time.
    You don’t need to fight these things. You just need to take out their supplies and do significant damage to the combat capability.
    Depending on how long their engines can last without lubricant, you have a Clock for when this thing is going to smashing into the ground or at least become combat significantly less effective.

    I don't know, i feels like the wingspan to be 1100 meter is a typo. When I played the game, it is not as big as you thought. I believe it will be only around 2 times as big as B-2 bomber or aroind 110 meter.

      The Arsenal Birds are just the latest in a long line of flying fortresses in the series. You've got the Hraesvelgr from Zero, the Arkbird from 5, the Aigaion and its escorts from 6, and two or three more I'm probably forgetting from earlier games and side stories.

    The Railgun wouldn't need to penetrate the Energy Shield...
    It was mentioned earlier in the video that the shield is not kept active all the time and is only energized when an incoming attack is detected...which means as long as the Arsenal Bird doesn't know it's under attack, the shield is down and it was also mentioned it takes a minute or so to charge the generators and raise the shield...given how fast a Railgun round flies, it will hit the bird before it even realizes it's under attack and if that round is large, fast and accurate enough, it will destroy the Arsenal Bird before it can activate the shield by destroying the Microwave Power Receiver that powers the entire Arsenal Bird and it's Shield...
    If I was planning the attack, I'd have a minimum of 2 Railguns, each would be aimed at 1 Arsenal Bird and both would fire simultaneously so one bird isn't warned of the attack by the destruction of the other bird and raises it's shield before I can shoot it...that first shot would destroy the Power Receiver, preventing the shield from being powered up and also shutting the engines down so I don't need to fire any more shots since the Arsenal Birds will now be forced to glide and no aircraft of that size can stay airborne for long before crashing to the ground (or water depending on where it was in it's orbit when shot)...the fact I wouldn't need to take a second shot means the chances of anyone figuring out where I was when I took my first shot (and carpet bombing the area with the still functioning combat drones, the Arsenal Birds may be doomed to destruction at that point, but are still MORE than dangerous enough to take out their killers before that final death) is highly unlikely...tracking weapons fire back to the launcher is very difficult with only one shot taken...
    If I could arrange for more than 2 Railguns, then the additional guns would shoot at the weapons storage pods brought up by the resupply shuttles to hopefully cause a detonation of either the drone missile magazine and/or drone fuel bunker which would tear the Arsenal Bird apart and cause it to crash (in MANY pieces) before being able to launch any drones...
    2 Railguns are the minimum needed to kill both Arsenal Birds, more would simply speed up the process...

    It’d be interesting if someday you did a breakdown of the spacecraft from Larry Niven’s “Known Space” stories. Or really just the vintage ones (From 1965 to 1980) since nothing he wrote after Ringworld Engineers added much to the mythos, and all the cool, fun stuff happened in the first 15 years (And most of that in the first 5 or 6)
    The ships are, in my opinion, really interesting and unique and the FTL system they use is not unique except in the way it affects the human nervous system and vision.

    I feel like attacking the resupply facilities would have been a more robust plan to bring the birds down. I haven't actually played the game so maybe there was some time pressure that I don't know about requiring the super-planes to be destroyed quickly, but if not, cutting their supply chain would eventually lead to them either breaking down and falling out of the sky on their own or it would force the Eruseans to expend significant resources creating and protecting an alternate method of resupply. The most powerful weapon in the world is just a really expensive lawn ornament if it runs out of engine grease.

    Can you do a video on designations in sci-fi? This is something that has been confusing me for a while. Anytime i watch anything explaining ships, weapons, vehicles, etc, the one question that comes to mind is "wtf do any of those numbers and letters even mean?"

    • @crashstudi0s
      @crashstudi0s 8 місяців тому +1

      Short answer: whatever the author wants them to mean.
      But in general, outside of ship classifications, the numbers and letters can vary from "a short way to explain the design", like the Twin Ion Engine figther series, or TIE fighter, a nod to real life vehicles or weapons, like Titanfall's/Apex's P2019/P2020 with the IRL pistol M1911, or just some techno babble for flavor or a funny inside joke
