New Toyota Problem I've Never Seen Before! More LS430 Goodness!

  • I share with you a New Toyota problem that I've never seen before in my long career as a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician.
Power steering fluid in Toyota and Lexus Products don't really have an interval of replacement recommend. However you want to regularly check the fluid and when you notice it getting darker, do replace it.
If you ever notice staining of the power steering reservoir change the fluid immediately and attempt to replace it again after a short time to clear any debris.
This otherwise perfectly working power steering pump in this 2004 Lexus LS430 suddenly started whining and completely stopped working because of the clogged screen in the reservoir that no matter what we did, it won't clear up requiring the replacement of the power steering pump and reservoir.

Yes Sir, another 17 minutes well spent watching one of your valuable Lexus enlightenment videos. After watching your videos, I decided to pull the trigger on getting my first Lexus. A 2005 LS430. A high milage, base model, one-owner, none-snow-belt-home state, well kept and serviced LS430. And she was 450 miles away. But I had no fear and drove it all the way home like I'd stolen it. I was afraid the owner might change his mind and wanted it back. I wanted to get out of Kentucky real quick. And quick, it was.
Only issue was a leaking right rear strut, and on the outside, a scrape here, a slight ding there, and the paint will need some restoration. With the help of The Car Care Nut videos, I've replaced the struts all around, front upper and lower control arms, lower control arm ball joints, tie-rod ends, wheel bearing hubs, rotors and brake pads. Yes, parts are very expensive but there is no way around this.
Folks, like AMD say: try to avoid replacing vital genuine OEM Lexus parts with aftermarket parts. Those parts might look the same, and fit the same way, but there's a 50/50% chance that they don't work the same. There's a reason why Lexus parts lasts as long as they do. I learned this the hard way in replacing the front hub bearing assembly with an aftermarket wheel hub kit. After installation, those bearings inside the hub sounded like either someone forgot to pack the wheel bearings with grease, or there was insufficient lubrication in there to prevent the ball bearings from eating the bearing race for breakfast. Buy whatever parts that you want that is available out there, but if you want it to last, there's no going around putting on genuine Lexus parts.

AMD, Yes, in the old days with my old jalopies, most mechanics skipped the 'Why?', just threw some parts at them and handed over the bill. I learned the hard way. With my nice, new 17 year old 'Toyota', I change my power steering fluid every 5 years at the same time the coolant is changed. Getting back to the LS, no car is perfect not even a Lexus. We really, really appreciate the time you take to educate us about the pros and cons of each model. 😁

Funny you say that. I just change the coolant and the power steering fluid in my five year old Toyota. I guess great minds think a like. I had previously change the brake fluid and the differential fluid. Transmission service was last year

@@kevinbarry71 Every 5 years I have the coolant, power steering fluid, manual transmission lubricant, serpentine belt and pcv valve changed. They are all easily accessible on my simple 1.8 engine. Doing it all at the same time makes it easy to remember and saves money as I get a sort of 'package price'. The brake fluid is done every 2-3 years.

I've had my 2004 Lexus LS 430 with 110,000 miles for one year. The car is phenomenal. It does have the Ultra Luxury Package, but the air suspension had been replaced with conventional coil-overs, so I avoided that issue. Another issue mentioned in this video is that the tilt and elevation steering column motors are broken, but I live it with it. My major headache has been the Mark Levinson audio system repair, a common problem. I have had the amplifier in the trunk repaired and I am in the process of repairing the deteriorated foam on all the doors and rear deck speakers. It is time-consuming, but not difficult or costly if you do it yourself. In the process I have learned so much more about the car's design, which is a plus. I also need to replace the old, dim navigation screen as he has done here with an Android unit. I would be interested in learning more about how that change worked out. AMD's educational videos are the best. He deserves all the accolades he receives.

By any chance do you happen to know much about the motors for the side mirrors? My issue after just buying a 2004 with 120k miles is that those motors went out unfortunately, so I have to manually snap the mirrors into place, like yours too steering column motors are giving me a little bit of trouble too.

You would be missing out I have a 2004 LS and I love it It’s 18 years old and just turned over 190K and it’s dead reliable I put 100000k plus in the last 6 years it was perfect what I had wanted color Moonlight Pearl interior Cashmere Beige and Mark Levinson it is such a solid vehicle and I never tire of its strengths The engine is so superb to any other vehicle I have owned Except my 99 LS400 and I wished I would had had the ability to have kept it It was traded in at 7 pm I was back at the dealership at 7 am the next day the LS400 was sold already the 2004 is a marked improvement in Handling and Drag Coefficient and has BT and Full time navigation so quiet the seats in the 99 I loved them best seats or best recliner seats that I wished I could have kept that Car the 2004 seats are modeled after the First Class Seats from the Best Japanese Airline Company and are very comfortable but they are more bolstered for the upgraded handling from the previous generation and it is more my style and the 24 seems like a 4 Dr NSX It feels like it is with the high roofline and the large windows it’s like the canopy on the F-111 and the lowered stance the body takes and the stunning 26 drag coefficient it’s whisper quiet fast and stops well it beat e eryluxury high end vehicle and eeverything works as it should it takes required maintenance and it will last easily 500K And more just doing what it needs No other make of vehicle can boast of such longevity with routine maintenance and it looks new still People are amazed as well as myself It’s better than I could have ever hoped and one anomaly on an LS isn’t a reason to abandon a thought you had yes keep your Avalon and yes what you spend on one now even with a good going thru no rust buckets But they were also made with rust prevention as a part of the build process It just never seems old or tired it’s really a testament to Lexus and it’s parent company Toyota They are one of the few if not the only one that values reliability and excellent engineering a Ten year old Lexus beats any new car it’s that much more I would say that the power steering was unfortunate but once it’s solved It will never happen again cars must be driven and all the fluids were neglected so whomever bought this and went thru it to fix everything is still at only 40 % of its new value if they had paid top dollar and then all of the use they will Enjoy from it for the price of a bare bones Camry they will have a top of the line LS430 Which stands for Luxury Sedan And it has been said the LS is the Land Cruiser of the sedans Meaning over engineered and seems to be ageless with care

TY Sir for this video, totally full of information as usual. Wow have never ever heard of a power steering pump completely failing so I am very glad you featured this rare failure. That smart key issue is a real pain, the cost involved to purchase 2 new key fobs and then have the car reprogramed to accept them is horrendous. Glad the Lexus is reaching it's final repairs and the new owner will no doubt be delighted with the outcome, once its dent free and polished up it will be a real rare beauty.

My 2002 Tundra has spent the last decade parked on a concrete pad that receives no shade, the hot Georgia sun bakes the truck from above and below with reflected heat. Last year I noticed a power steering pump whine, and when I checked the fluid I noticed the reservoir had tiny cracks all over it... it was not leaking but failure was probably going to happen sooner than later. I replaced the reservoir and fluid... all is well today. I have pictures of the old reservoir if you would like to see it.

Unbelievable timing with this video. Two weeks ago the power steering cooler on my 14 Tundra leaked from corrosion. It had no symptoms whatsoever , no whining, no resistance in the steering wheel. I only found out accidentally, when it was on the lift for routine maintenance. What was really shocking was the discolored reservoir, I always looked at it as being full, thinking the stain was the level. Great video AMD , keep up the great work. 👍

I replaced the PS fluid in my 04 Camry in 2007 by using a barbed hose coupling between the return line and a long piece of Tygon tubing while filling with ATF Dexron III. As always very professional. As a fleet technician I work on multiple brands. I have always owned GM products and I guess I have been lucky because I have never changed a power steering pump on any of my GM’s. Both vehicles are about 20 years old 280k on 1 180K on the other. Multiple GM’s in the fleet I service I can tell you we have never change a power steering pump because of failure a few because of rust. I think the biggest problem is most people do not service fluid. I blame the manufacturers. I’m a new Toyota owner of 2 years so I will see how it holds up. Thanks for the great information you put out for vehicle owners out there. Wish you the best with your new shop.

I worked for Toyota and in 1990 started with Lexus for about 26 years before I had to retire due to a disability. One thing for you to check on the power steering system, is another filter on the power steering rack. The filter is located on the rack solenoid, remove the solenoid, filter looks like a ring. After removing the solenoid, turn steering wheel from side to side to flush dirty fluid out. One of the other common problems for the power steering, was the solenoid not activating, fix was a control module located near the steering column.

It has 108k miles and brand new KYB struts all around within the last 10k miles so that could be why. Would love to one-day own a 04-06 LS430 but their expensive repairs is what scares me off. I cleaned my reservoir by flushing it with brake cleaner and after that with a sour oxide removing compound and after that with isopropyl alcohol to remove the rest of the liquid inside. Also I used an old toothbrush to get inside and scraped away most of the stain. Came out pretty well but watch out to not brake of the lines if you doing yourself while disconnecting the hoses. Sorry if this is not the perfect place to ask a question but I am a DIY mechanic and I would love to get a Lexus LS but I think I prefer the LS400 because I think they are much more DIY friendly. Can you recommend a particular year of the LS400. I prefer cars that don't require reprogramming of modules every time you need to replace one. A car that can be maintained with rather basic scan tools rather than a subscription etc. I would love to hear your thoughts.

On the 98 camry Im fixing up, I went through the power steering system, put new bushings on the rack, new lines and hoses, rebuilt the power steering pump, new fluid several times, and I also cleaned out the resivoir. I tried many things to clean the gunk out, but the only thing that worked was carberator cleaner. You have to take the resivoir off, cap off the holes at the bottom, and blast the thing with carb cleaner and the stuff (at least in my case) comes rigjt off. Rinse and repeat, clean the carb cleaner out of the resivoir, let it dry, and thats it! Worked great!

The previous owner gave me the maintenance records and the power steering pump had been replaced at 80K miles due to a hose leak and running the pump dry too long. Seeing this video makes me glad I replaced the res. Just have to replace the leaking valve cover gaskets next.

My 1989 Mazda MX 6 GT had a custom-fit dash cover on it when I bought it in the 90s. If your car is kept out in the sun for many hours a day, a cover like that really helps prevent sun damage.

Among all the few repairs I have, I would consider the covers for door handles the most annoying problem. They just keep falling off (and expose the silver frame beneath them)! Yes, the side mirror and door actuators are costly but they are only one-time expenses (only the driver door and passenger side mirror as of today). To my surprise, the AC compressor and radiators are still the original parts. They are still going strong!

    • @alphaomega7891
      @alphaomega7891 Рік тому +2

The door actuators have a tiny electric motor, which is the part that fails. You can take the actuator apart and (check Lexus forum on what & where to buy), replace the motor. Pre-2022 inflation, they were under $10 each. Fix all 4 doors for probably $60 and an afternoon. (( I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Toyota/Lexus uses the very same motors on their Camry ))
The steering wheel movement problem is a worn out worm-drive gear, pull it off the shaft & reinstall "backwards" with the unworn portion in contact with drive gear, and you're good for another ? 10-15 years ? There are lots of OCD people who own these cars, same story as with BMWs, except the 430s have fewer problems, many times fewer.

I have an 04 Ls430 for the last 8 years with air suspension, now has 200k miles. Been super reliable and everything still works! Only thing that failed was the coolant radiator.
Have it running on propane gas (lpg) fab economy. Cheaper than driving a 2.0 diesel.

Cheaper to run than a 2.0 liter diesel? I doubt that. Unless you’re getting 55 mpg highway, no way you’re doing better than a diesel.

Thanks for another great video. I have a 1995 Toyota Avalon XL with 93,000 miles which I think may be in need of some fluid replacement services. Which of the following do you recommend I should have done? 1. Power steering fluid replacement (fluid has never been replaced). What is the proper way to do this service? I plan to use Mobil 1™ Synthetic ATF.
    2. Automatic transmission fluid drain and fill (fluid has never been replaced). I plan to use 4 quarts of Mobil 1™ Synthetic ATF.
    3. Differential fluid replacement (fluid has never been replaced). I plan to use 1 quart of Mobil 1™ Synthetic ATF.
    Thanks!

Some auto manufactures recommend a much lower flush interval. For cars that I service, I flush the power steering system every 36-48 months. I realize it with full synthetic power steering fluid and also remove the reservoir and use full strength degreaser wherever possible. If not, replace the reservoir. I just performed this service on an 2005 Avalon and replaced the leaking hoses/lines. It is so much cheaper to flush a system than replacing a pump/rack and pinion unit.

As usual, excellent (although somewhat frightening!) video Car Care Nut. At the beginning of the year I bought a November (but registered March 2013) 2012 IS 350, It has 91,000 Kms (about 57,000 miles) It is what is known as a Sports Luxury so it has sunroof, electric memory seats, heated/ventilated seats, radar cruise control and electric steering column...curious to know your though your thoughts on this car! It's my first Lexus (the realisation of a dream) It's Vermillion fire red with ivory inteior, 18-inch alloys and a beautiful car to behold!

great video! Do you know if that headunit is available for the rx330? Also, I had the tilt steering stop working in my 95 LS400- it was a relatively easy job to replace the motor. Sometimes all they need is to be taken apart and regreased and they will start working again too.

Coincidentally this is one of the first thing I fixed when I bought mine. Tried everything to get rid of the stains and failed. So I cleaned the screen best I could - and regularly drained and filled the oil to replace most of the old fluid.

Buy and leave it in front of the house to look nice. High maintenance car. Wow. Good thing I didn't buy this 2 years ago. Won't want to work on this car with this amount of trouble, parts wise, expensive.
But I did love how smooth the drive was and how quiet it was. Beautiful car.
Glad I watch it through. Can you do more video which vehicles from Toyota and Lexus that are DIY friendly?
