I wish this Mario Sunshine series could continue forever. I’ve watched nearly every retrospective and deep dive of this game on UA-cam, but I’ve never seen anyone give the game as much love as you have. I grew up on this game, and have played through dozens of times, but I’ve learned numerous new details in each of your episodes! I feel satisfied in knowing that there is finally a series out there that shows Sunshine as the incredible (albeit imperfect) work of art that it is. It’s so much more than “the 3D Mario after Mario 64.” My hat’s off to you sir. I know many of us would love to see some more sporadic Sunshine videos pop up from you in the future, if you ever find yourself with another Sunshine topic to tackle. Cheers!
That tall grass secret is iconic to me. Little kid me didn't know it existed, then while playing smash brawl, I randomly noticed a pipe on the cliff in the Delfino stage that I had never noticed before, I quickly booted up sunshine, went there myself, and was nothing short of SHOCKED to not only see a secret I had never seen before, but an Area so distinct among all the other areas in that game.
Yeah I was so stoked to find that even if I only played this game first time last year with an emulator (never owned any Nintendo consoles as a kid). I believe I was waiting for the boat with Yoshi to reach the lily pad level on my second playthrough and randomly noticed it.
There’s a glitch in the Lily pad ride where if you hover through the bars of the grate at the end, you can walk below the surface of the water. Really easy to get coins you missed that way.
I really love the detail of Peach's hair change when you get to the Plaza, because it totally makes sense in-universe. On the air-conditioned plane, keeping her hair down was fine, but now that she's out in the heat she decided to put it up so that her neck didn't get all sweaty. Combine it with the parasol and you can see that Peach is kind of struggling with the heat.
You'd think she'd be used to extreme heat by now, constantly kidnapped by Bowser and held captive in a lava-filled labyrinth. Maybe the heat on Isle Delfino just hits different?
She also puts it up like that in her fire form in 3DW. I always assumed it was so her hair didn’t catch, but you may be onto something with the heat theory.
Fun fact - If you talk to the "Throw me a coin and I'll throw you for a loop" guy, and you either say no, or you don't have any coins, then he delivers my all-time favorite NPC line in this entire game: "A single coin may have the power to change your destiny." (Also, in the GameCube versions of the game, during the "Princess in Peril" episode [where Shadow Mario takes Peach to Pinna Park], Yellow Toad was mistakenly placed underneath the map. You can only talk to him if you glitch your way down into the blue realm of death. You can find him kinda-sorta near the area with the white docks by the Blue Coin hut, and as soon as you do speak to him, you will die. This was fixed in the 3D All-Stars version.) Man, I'm gonna miss this series so much. Others have pointed out just how amazing it is to have someone do a deep dive of this game that we've always loved and that a lot of Mario fans don't appreciate at all. Your series has really helped to capture what makes this game so magical, whimsical, and fun to so many people. And as someone who has been obsessed with this game and its little details since I was a toddler playing it on GameCube, this series has taught me more than I ever thought I could know about it, and I can't express how much I love that. I couldn't have dreamed of someone making a series that would go into this much painstaking detail about every little quirk within this game, because there are a lot of other Sunshine videos, but none that hit quite like these. Can't wait to see the finale; it's been a great ride :)
I've been trying to think up of a way to compliment this series that truly expresses my thanks, but nothing could top what you've just said. It scratches deep itches in my brain.
I want to say I believe the Pianta asking "where are the cameras" could be a bit of 4th wall humour. Super Mario 64 had a literal Lakitu holding a camera follow Mario around to explain the camera perspective and is *the* reason why a good chunk of people call it a camera in the first place. Sunshine lacks this explanation and is the first true Super Mario game post 64, at least on a console, so it would make sense to include a joke about missing such an important aspect of the last game
Funny thing is, I was watching the original video when it was taken down, and it went down just as you were saying "This might have been the least legal thing we've ever done to get a shine", so for a brief second, I thought it was part of the video.

24:09 Also, Shadow Mario's Mecha Koopa-looking ship similarly foreshadows the Mecha-Bowser fight. 53:41 I think the reason why people argue that isle is a sunfish is because literally every other island on this map is an animal. Why would that one be any different? Not the mention: sunfish are important in Japanese culture. I'm 99% certain it's a sunfish. I think it's just a happy coincidence that the isle also resembles the IRL Hawaiian island, hence why the developers put the volcano in the same spot. It wouldn't be the first time the Mario series had a happy coincidence like that. For example: warui ((悪い) Japanese for "bad") + Mario (マリオ) = Wario (ワリオ) which just so happens to start with "W" in English, the letter which inverts Mario's "M". The whole gimmick falls apart in English once we get to Waluigi, but hey. 54:01 ...I'm just now realizing that Corona Mountain is the dolphin's blowhole. Delfino Plaza definitely is one of the most interesting hub worlds in Mario games, it’s the heart of the whole island, in retrospect I do wish it was a tiny bit bigger
As for why Delfino Plazas darkness is a camera effect, I assume it would have been too expensive to do all that light calculation across the whole level or even just fake it with transparent textures. Much less expensive to simply apply a filter and use basic shader code to determine what parts of the map the filter would affect.
Pretty cool that in the intro map of delfino island you can see that Corona mountain is filled with water. It's because the mountain erupted that this water flooded Delfino plaza.
29:44 You missed that in the original Gamecube version, the yellow toad spawns underneath Delfino Plaza, so is therefor missing from this scene entirely. He's still accessible by clipping under the floor and trying to talk to him before the game kills you. They fixed it in the switch version! Also at 51:36 you'll notice since its a beta map, the small water fall on the right side is missing.
Between your deep analyses, how you list the music used, detailed timestamps in your description, and just all around high-quality content, you've absolutely earned a subscriber from me. Can't wait to see what you do next!
40:42 That secret level is internally labeled as a Bianco Hills secret, likely originally the Dirty Lake secret (since the cave entrance has a turbo nozzle box) A lot of the secret levels are mixed around internally based on their names.
Wow, amazing that the goo in the plaza resembles the bosses you're about to fight in the level they unlock. I always viewed the Petey one as one of those Swoopin' Stus. 20:50 Great to hear I'm not crazy and it happened to others as well. To this day I'm worried while talking to that guy that he's going to miss. 21:28 Strangely enough there are a couple more buildings with (empty) interiors, they're the ones near the cannon to Pinna (the building you can walk under). I always assumed that's the side of the Plaza they modelled first and thus is the most detailed. The very, very early Ricco screenshot hidden inside Eely's eyes, that is obsoletely mindblowing. I had seen the picture before but no idea where it came from, amazing it's actually taken from the final game!
38:41 Okay not only based use of Miror B's theme from XD. But it being in sync with the gameplay as well. *Chef kiss* Huge shoutout to the editing of your vids, I can only imagine how long it'd take to make these vids but man the payoff certainly comes forwards front and center when they're finished.
31:26 I...really don't hear the Shine Get theme in this. The Shine Get theme is supposed to be a remix of part of the main level theme like they did in Mario 64. The Mecha Bowser theme sounds like its own thing, aside from the bassline being the same as the Shadow Mario theme. I guess the rhythm is similar, but that's about it
"I wonder if he knows the secret easy way I discovered to get the red coins in the toxic water level?" . . . 38:37 "Oh yeah he knows." AND MIRROR B THEME at the same time?! That alone earns this video a like. (I mean I was gonna anyway but if I wasn't. There ya go.) Love pokemon colosseum and XD Gale of darkness.
easily one of my most rewatched line of videos on youtube, right next to Brutalfoods. it'll be bittersweet to finish my 100% playthrough (and this series as a whole) but you've done great work along the way!
Please dont stop making these Your brand of deep dive is just so comfortable and thorough, id be sadder to lose this series than any cancelled show ive ever watched. Paper mario ttyd, splatoon, a non nintendo title, whatever you want! Id watch a deep dive of yours on any game, played it or not. Thanks again for treating mario sunshine with the reverence we all have for it having grown up with it, it feels really special to have something so meaningful to me (and the rest of the comment section) cared for and thought of so closely and lovingly.
Eely Mouth being originally intended for Ricco Harbor makes me wonder if Noki Bay - which you pointed out seemed to be a late-game addition they didn't quite get finished - had content originally meant for the harbor, but then they decided to splinter it off for its own level. After all, Gooper Blooper also first appeared in the harbor before reappearing in the bay.
46:44 Oh god I did the Delfino Plaza 100 coin shine in the flooded plaza a few years ago... it took me like 2 hours and I almost lost my goddamn mind because I mistakenly entered Sirena Beach one time, and died on the out of bounds death plane twice when I was trying to glitch down to the iocean floor and ended to clipping out of bounds, instead of to the ocean floor... (I then made the mistake of deciding to collect the 10 blue coins in Corona Mountain (but not going further than that in the mountain) right after that which... yeah, perhaps not my wisest move)
Imagine being one of the developers who worked on this game seeing this video and being like… “yeah, I forgot I left that Noki voice track on that pianta, lol.” Or “yeah I took that image of delfino plaza and was too lazy to let the shine gate shine stop spinning to face the front.”
25:13 "He Walked by Night" must have been a cult classic in Japan because they reference it in Station Square in Sonic Adventure where a car blocks a manhole cover and makes the sewers inaccessible at first. It's kinda nice to think about those movies inspiring these Japanese developers, like how the Blues Brothers were the inspiration for the main singers of the Runaway Five in Earthbound.
24:25 I like to interpret that goo shape covering the entrance to Gelato Beach as a reference to Wiggler curling its body around the top of the tower in Episode 2 of Gelato Beach.
My guy, this has been the most nostalgia-inducing and fascinating series I've seen on UA-cam to date. Hearing you cover every detail of this wonderful game under the magnifying glass in an entertaining and comedic way has been a treat. Appreciate ya a lot. Looking forward to the next episode.
It always makes me happy to hear a wild Miror B. Theme appear in videos, yours or otherwise. Have a free comment. Also love your breakdowns, can't wait to see what other projects you have down the road.
Yo!! Was so psyched to see you included my comment from way back in the Bianco Hills episode! Still loving every episode you've released, thank you for shouting out my detail! ❤
YESSS been waiting on this one! I'm beyond glad you've given Mario Sunshien the love, adoration, and playful investigation that I've always known it to be worthy of. And on a more personal note. You've come so far! Your videos are so very well crafted. And it's a joy to see you get more and more subscribers because you absolutely deserve them. I'm rooting for you. And look forward to any next project you set your sights on!
50:04 Mario 3, specifically, definitely is a staged recreation. You can see where the scenery is bolted to the wall in early levels - the block you can drop down from to get the early flute is notable because it ISN'T fastened to the background.
Dude, sunshine and sly cooper (2 was my favorite) were HUGE to me as a kid. Stumbling upon your channel and seeing you go through both games in great detail has been above entertaining and interesting at the same time. Thanks for the awesome creations man.
I’ve been completely immersed in this video series and have your episodes playing throughout the day while working or doing chores in the house. Your editing, little gags and insight knowledge are second to none! And best of all, it gave me a new appreciation for what I considered to be ‘worst 3D Mario’ when in fact I grew up with this game and would play in the hotel area like I was a guest there.. Many happy memories returned because of you. I should dive into the game again! Thank you, @2CPhoenix !
I am not really some Mario mega fan and only played Sunshine as a kid for a couple hours because I wasn’t good, but these videos are so well made. I watched each one and even awaited the last few ones. Great job on this series
I love seeing these videos show up in my feed. This series is one of my favorites of any video-essay-style videos. I hope you do more games in the future, the Sly one was really cool ^.^
I haven't commented much on these videos, but I've been enjoying them so much. I've played through Sunshine at least a dozen times and these videos have still taught me obscure things I didn't know about the game. It's honestly fascinating and I really appreciate it
One of my favorite glitches in this game that you didn’t mention is walking under the poison river in the lily pad level. It’s a fun glitch and I find it to actually be useful if you miss one of the red coins as it is so easy to do. If you get to the end of the stream and jump off the back of the platform where you can see the water running down, then hover at the right height, you can walk on the floor of the poison river. Only the surface of the water kills Mario, not the area underneath, so entering it from the side like this is possible. It’s actually really easy to collect most of the coins from down here. Just bellyslide and do a rollout at the right time and you have just enough height to touch the coin. Getting out of the river is tricky as just jumping kills Mario when he touches the surface of the water. But strangely a backflip lets him pass right through. So just do a backflip to land on one of the ledges.
Delfino Plaza is one of my favorite hubs of any game. So much fun jumping around in this tropical vista, interacting with the silly Piantas and gathering Shines left and right. Amazing work on this analysis, I’m definitely looking forward to the finale of this Sunshine Extravaganza!
Just wanted to say how much this series meant to me. This was one of the first games I ever played as a kid, and has remained maybe my favourite of all time. What you did was such a love letter to sunshine as a whole. A million thanks!!!
I’ve loooooved this series. I’ve been watching it with my annual Summer time replay of this game. Sunshine was my childhood and I’m so glad it’s getting the attention it deserves. I hope you do this type of series for other Mario games or GameCube games like Luigi’s Mansion and Pikmin 1 and 2!
Im so grateful that you're making these SMS videos. I really love the @ParticularMushroom videos on sms but his channel went dark a few years ago and I want mooooore about this amazing, bizarre game!
Dude, your videos on this game have been blowing my mind! Everytime I think I've discovered everything there is to see and do in this game, here you come with your analysis video series on Sunshine, which is my all time favorite game, and showing off plenty of small or overlooked details and oversights that I've never known or seen. Some of those things, such as the Gelato Beach registers secret 7 coins, are a prime example of what I'm gonna incorporate into my run whenever I 100% replay the game again. I thank you so much. You're an absolute rockstar!
It's been SO long since I've subscribed to someone, but the enjoyment I feel every time I saw a new Sunshine video posted and my respect for the great choices of music (like Miror B's theme from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness) has led me to a new subscriber. Also the actual content of the videos is so thorough it feels like you're having so much fun, those are what kept me watching in the first place. Thanks, my friend.
I've really enjoyed this series!!! One of my favourite childhood games, I've played it more times than I can count and it's amazing to see all the stuff I never found. You're very thorough and have a great presentation style, looking forward to seeing what you do next!
I appreciate this deep dive into possibly my favorite mario game ever. Ive learned so many things that my younger self would be hella mad that i didnt find those out on my own.
26:40 not sure if anybody else has mentioned this, but it was shown in a TAS last year (possibly earlier, not sure), that with some very precise timing this shine can actually be collected properly this way, rather than not being collected and resulting in a broken hitbox
14:46 "He looks like his father was a bodybuilder and his mother was a TRIANGLE!" Ah, a man of culture I see. I didn't expect a reference to Jello Apocalypse's "Pokemon: Dogs in Love" series, but hearing it made me cheer out loud!
Watching this series has been the best part of my day since I discovered it. I don't want it to end! Please wring as much detail out of the game as you can, no matter how miniscule, so I don't have to deal with it actually being over. Here's a fun idea: Since Sunshine has lots of optional sidequests and stuff, what's the most amount of Shines you can have spawned in at once?
Honestly these videos have sparked so much more admiration for sunshine. There are several factors why I like SM64 and galaxy more, but sunshine is still incredible.
This could be exactly what you meant when you call that island Pianta the cast away Pianta, but that has to be a reference to the movie Cast Away ft Tom Hanks and Wilson the volley ball.
I will miss this series once its over. Also you can a rocky ridge apart from the volcano is some areal views of the island, this may be the cut Erto Rock level. Maybe you could do a video on cut content.
I am pretty sure the darkness effect is applied to insure the characters (but mostly Mario) always have a drop shadow to ensure the player always has a reference point for platforming. The whole point of adding a drop shadow in the first place in Mario 64 was have a reference point for Mario’s location in 3D space. Maybe the camera adding a filter kept the drop shadow more consistent, but I could be wrong.
Woah you blew my mind with the flower heads. The dark version is so neat to see and ironically feels more active than the endgame versions. Was so fascinating to see Delfino for the first time ever. I wish the changes were more gradual. Of course, it's always amazing to see remnants of beta versions left over here and there in the final game. Shoutouts to the beta recreation mod currently in progress.
29:39 Surprising that you didnt mention the Toad which is placed oob and has text aswell near below Ricco Harbors entrance. Idk why but I always found it intresting that the places were named diffrently in other languages. In German as example Ricco Harbor is Porto D'oro, Bianco Hills is Monte Bianco, Pianta Village is Plaza della Palma and so on
During the Princess in Peril segment of the Plaza, the yellow toad was mistakenly spawned below the map in the Japanese and North American GameCube releases, so unless you knew how to get out of bounds his dialog would just be something you missed. The PAL release fixed this and put him where he was supposed to be (and 3D All Stars took from that.) Minor correction also, to get water from a barrel you don't need to be using FLUDD, just a simple ground pound will do. It's also funny that in the opening cutscene where the Shine gate shine is backwards, the two bells on the bell towers are still covered in goop and the Grand Pianta Statue has the graffiti "M" on it, despite both of these things happening after Shadow Mario comes to the island.
34:08 the logo on the crate could also be a Strollin' Stu, the little Goomba replacement enemies waddling everywhere, It eerily looks like it, with the big nose, the small eyes and the..... pants?

38:41
Okay not only based use of Miror B's theme from XD. But it being in sync with the gameplay as well. *Chef kiss*
Huge shoutout to the editing of your vids, I can only imagine how long it'd take to make these vids but man the payoff certainly comes forwards front and center when they're finished.
The fruit freighter box's symbol is an orange/tangerine or the like. The big circle is the fruit, the small circle is a leaf.
That would make sense. They have to get the fruit to the Isle somehow afterall!
I am almost 30 and this is my favorite video series on youtube ever.
Exactly the same here lol
easily one of my most rewatched line of videos on youtube, right next to Brutalfoods. it'll be bittersweet to finish my 100% playthrough (and this series as a whole) but you've done great work along the way!
Please dont stop making these
Your brand of deep dive is just so comfortable and thorough, id be sadder to lose this series than any cancelled show ive ever watched.
He also did a Sly Cooper series before he started on this Sunshine one. I personally have no interest, but check it out for yourself if you want!
No one ever talks about going up the back of the pachinko machine 🤣 that's amazing!
Or the wall jumping on the glass??? I always just struggled through this level I had no idea how many secrets it hid
Wait. The water that flooded Delfino Plaza… is it suggested that the water came from Bowser’s bathtub? That’s so disgusting
Gamer Koopa bathwater.
You're welcome.
@@geistgrace6452 i hate that this was the exact thing that came to my mind after reading the og comment too...
21:45 "No collision in here so not exactly hospitable" as Mario just instantly dies from nothing is hilarious
46:25 the blue pianta watching you spin 😂
It always makes me happy to hear a wild Miror B. Theme appear in videos, yours or otherwise. Have a free comment. Also love your breakdowns, can't wait to see what other projects you have down the road.
What a joyful series, thank you
Mushroom guy is CLEARLY the Pianta version of Spencer.
He just randomly has shit combust around him for literally no discernable reason.
Yeah, the guy missing the window with his throw has happened to me MANY times.
My GOAT blessing us with another Upload😌
50:04 Mario 3, specifically, definitely is a staged recreation. You can see where the scenery is bolted to the wall in early levels - the block you can drop down from to get the early flute is notable because it ISN'T fastened to the background.
Dude, sunshine and sly cooper (2 was my favorite) were HUGE to me as a kid. Stumbling upon your channel and seeing you go through both games in great detail has been above entertaining and interesting at the same time. Thanks for the awesome creations man.
I love this content so much, this is my first ever game and your information is absolutely interesting
Ooh, nice that the plaza has fish swimming in it when it's flooded!
Continuously blown away by your thorough and highly enjoyable videos. Totally gonna rewatch all of this once it's concluded!
This is my favorite youtube series atm
38:45 Not the Mirror B theme song Lmao
Im so grateful that you're making these SMS videos. I really love the @ParticularMushroom videos on sms but his channel went dark a few years ago and I want mooooore about this amazing, bizarre game!
God I love this series. I would _love_ to see you do deep dives into other games you care about.
That montage with the Miror B. music was just... *chef's kiss*
Absolutely mindblowing! So many details, so many secrets! Such a fun and well-paced editing! Amazing video, fantastic work!
Great series, would be stoked to see more games tackled in this manner
just earlier wistfully wished for a new video from you. coincidences are great. always excited to watch your deep dives!!
Thank you for making my nights so peaceful and enjoyable, Phoenix!!
this has truly been the greatest series of video game videos. cant wait for your coverage of more games!
Man I can't wait to see what you cover after sunshine! Loved your sly 2 breakdowns and have loved these just as much!!
Mirror B's theme is a bop
14:46 "He looks like his father was a bodybuilder and his mother was a TRIANGLE!"
Ah, a man of culture I see. I didn't expect a reference to Jello Apocalypse's "Pokemon: Dogs in Love" series, but hearing it made me cheer out loud!
Whoa, I had no idea that grass level existed! A few years ago, I beat the game and did some extra stuff, but I've never found that level.
Amazing work as always! This series has been INCREDIBLE to watch.
The thumbnail though
Mama Peach
Oh good heavens...
Honestly these videos have sparked so much more admiration for sunshine. There are several factors why I like SM64 and galaxy more, but sunshine is still incredible.
Thanks!
The slowed down wiggler theme also kind of sounds like something out of a Godzilla movie
Amazing as always, these deep dives have been absolutely delightful to watch. Thank you 2C (:
Been soooo excited for this one!!
I cannot believe you called Shadow Mario "Gooey Mario"
I look forward to these so much! Thank you!
I love the clips from AverageTrey to show speedrun tricks! I adore all his videos, and it’s so fun to see him mentioned here!
53:39 and the Goop's eye texture where you can see the Airstrip connected by the city
In German as example Ricco Harbor is Porto D'oro, Bianco Hills is Monte Bianco, Pianta Village is Plaza della Palma and so on
Easily my favorite series on UA-cam. You rock dude
5:31, its actually one of my fav "secret level", just plain fun, boasting ontop the best music in the game "Sky & Sea"
During the Princess in Peril segment of the Plaza, the yellow toad was mistakenly spawned below the map in the Japanese and North American GameCube releases, so unless you knew how to get out of bounds his dialog would just be something you missed. The PAL release fixed this and put him where he was supposed to be (and 3D All Stars took from that.)
Minor correction also, to get water from a barrel you don't need to be using FLUDD, just a simple ground pound will do.
It's also funny that in the opening cutscene where the Shine gate shine is backwards, the two bells on the bell towers are still covered in goop and the Grand Pianta Statue has the graffiti "M" on it, despite both of these things happening after Shadow Mario comes to the island.
34:08 the logo on the crate could also be a Strollin' Stu, the little Goomba replacement enemies waddling everywhere,
It eerily looks like it, with the big nose, the small eyes and the..... pants?
never seen delfino plaza flooded before. looks really cool.
