  • It's been an epic few weeks for the youngbarnacles team. We've finished our transom extension project, repaired damaged areas of the hull and blocked up the skin fittings that we no longer need (there is no point having more holes in a boat than absolutely necessary!) We've made new seals for the sail drives and removed our old rudders to get a look at the rudder stocks ready for our new rudder project. We have sanded and sanded the hull until it is as fair as we can get it before we apply antifoul. Most exciting of all, we have found an America's Cup rudder we can use to make moulds for new rudders for our catamaran. We plan to make wings to put on the rudders so be sure to see the prep work in this video before we get started with the rudder in the next episode • RUDDER UPGRADES - Maki...

Great projects. I wonder..... (this is end of the day second beer discussion stuff)... if you could just use foam as the transom extensions. Less work and then you'd never need to use fenders at the back.... But likely the foam you would choose wouldn't be stiff enough to use as a step... so you could gusset a top fiber-glassed rigid foam panel for that. But the bottom you'd just have to shape. (If I think about this again, I might just glue a piece of medium dense closed cell foam at the back of my boat and see what happens to it in the ocean).

@@youngbarnacles Thanks. You shouldn't encourage a nut like me. Now I'm wondering if inflatable 'extenders' could be made that would strap to the sugar scoops extending the hull length (LWL) 5-6 feet. Be kind of wild if hypalon inflatables could be made for $5-6k, strapped to the transoms, pumped up and at x cruising RPM maybe gain a 'free' knot. I've got a monohull, so I'd only have to make one, proof of concept.

I’d be having a good look at the stainless rudder shafts, checking for electrolysis! Stainless can have a pin hole on the surface and a cavernous hole within! 👀😎🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺

Absolutely! Great point. That was the first thing we looked for when we took the blades off. Crevice corrosion is a known problem when the blade is bonded to the stock depriving it of oxygen. The usual tell tale signs of rust and pitting on the shaft were thankfully not present. Our original plan was to replace the entire rudder and rudder stock with brand new ones however time and budget restraints has meant this is now our permanent temporary solution! 🙄😬

Maybe I missed it, but what was the overlap length and layup for the extensions? - Thanks!

150mm on the skins was the base line overlap. The lay up was dependant on the surface, on the bottom it was the same as the original bottom. The deck part was 800gsm base with additional patching for the ladder etc....
