In this video I cover a series of steps in the boatbuilding process including sanding, fairing, cutting holes, and testing fabric store peel ply.
GIven the high price of consumables in building a boat I decide test some fabric store peel ply candidates. Peel Ply is a type of material used to protect the surface of the hull during the building process. The peel ply can be easily removed once the boat is complete, revealing a smooth, ready-to-paint surface.

Great test... My biggest problem was with pill play the expense and the extra step...
Mitigate the expense then it might be doable

The fabric store stuff is no cheaper. The best price I found on peel ply was AliExpress. Same stuff as the others sell. Just folded for shipping. I've used a lot and it's one of the best quality peel plies I've ever found. Thnx for looking in. Cheers! Rick

Thanks. I have wondered if this was possible. I had assumed the other fabrics would bond solid.
I do wonder if Peelply has a release agent coating. Perhaps you could apply this to the diy versions?
I have yet to try Peelply…I am too mean!
I have used polythene sheet, works well, though easy to end up with ripples, but better than none

We got the samples from my wife's sewing room. I believe they were either nylon or polyester. I've used a lot of different peel plies over the years and the best are by far the nylon ones. Although a bit more expensive the extra cost is usually worth it. The polyester plies stuck hard with epoxy. They may work better with polyester or vinylester resins. I've been thinking of redoing this video sometime this winter when I have time. I also used some plastic sheet on butt splices back in the early days and yes I got the ripples too. Thanks for looking in. Cheers! Rick

And I forgot, the fabric store fabrics are usually more expensive than real peel ply. At least here in Canadian dollars. Bargain bins might be better. Just look for the heavier materials.

I was correct, Peelply has a silicone coating.

Would have been a better experiment if your viewers knew the materials you were using and the cost of each material..

Didn't actually buy any materials. Raided the wife's fabric horde. I believe most were common nylon or polyester.
