Setting in Biblical Narrative

- Every story has to take place somewhere, and very often locations have a special meaning or significance evoked by events that already took place there. In this video, we explore how biblical authors use settings in the narrative to meet the reader's expectations or mess with them. Paying attention to locations and time in biblical stories unlocks deeper layers of meaning.

Oliver Lagda I feel the same way!
Many people commenting keep making statements like: “You should not be emphasizing the authors, but The Author,” “You are wrong for crediting humans with creativity in their writing,” etc.
Here are a few facts:
• The Tanakh (Old Testament) and the B'rit Chadasha (New Testament) were not golden tablets that fell from heaven. This isn't Mormonism. Every reputable biblical scholar recognizes this fact. It is a literary work, written over a span of time, and in different places, to different audiences, and was accumulated together into this masterpiece.
• The Bible (Old + New) is a literary compilation that has been composed and interwoven for 1500 years using people's own languages, dialects, first person expressions, personal feelings, etc. Unless the Ruach ha-Kodesh (Holy Spirit) just took people and made them into human typewriters (which would violate their free will), we are left with the millennia-old debate of the process of inspiration, canonization, etc.
• The Bible is clearly 100% from the Ruach and 100% from human creativity and genius. The Bible places such a strong emphasis on humans and their creative abilities. This does not deny the theopneustos ("theos" =God; "pneuma" = breathed; translated "inspired of God" in KJV) nature of the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Denying the human side of the Bible project speaks volumes of how you view humans as God's image-bearers.
• The Bible Project, clearly, does not view the Bible as just a bunch of old sages who got inspired like Shakespeare and wrote a literary work. The Ruach is the one who has overseen and structured this project and its development (referring to the actual compiling nature of the Scriptures).
• Unless you have studied Textual Criticism or have done some really in-depth work (beyond just preaching at a church), you should sit down and spend a month in reading up on textual criticism and sit with it before you bash 20+ people who have studied this for weeks and condensed their thoughts to a 5-minute video. Not being disrespectful, but unless you've really sat down and studied this, you should be slower to criticize and quicker to dig deeper.

Stephen Scaggs love this
Stephen thanks a lot for this humble reply.
For a layman listening to this, how they word the videos is important. I myself was rubbed the wrong way by how they spoke of certain things. If there is a great percentage of people walking away from these videos with the mindset of the authors are just making up the Bible, with no inspiration from the Holy Spirit, then it is up to the makers to correct this false take-away.
Personally, I have a great relationship with The Father, and I know from whom my salvation comes, but if you are a person just floating around the net and watch this without the understanding we have, then you are going to think of the Bible as just a collection of writings in the way that they present it here.
Honestly, there should be a disclaimer that they are examining the scriptures that we hold so dear in the light of literary works and NOT as a commentary to delegitimize them or make them mundane. I often came away with that feeling, so perhaps this might be a good solution? You seem to have a good perspective, and I would genuinely like your thoughts on this.
Shalom!
@@gryphonsong4082 These videos are just an invitation to dive in deeper. When you visit their site they have resources , book recommendations and writings that further explains the videos. For anyone who is truly searching for answers you'll be willing to dive deeper. Many who disapprove of their videos respectfully do not have what I'll call the academic knowledge of the bible. For them the bible was given by the Holy Spirit (true) and it's just that. We forget the bible is a book like any other though divine and this sometimes wilful ignorance is what creates dangerous doctrines because many read it differently as they would a normal book.
@@addjoaprekobaah5914 I'd love to chat with you, I have the same thoughts as you. Shalom
I'm so happy you showed a truer depiction of Jesus' appearance. Thank You
There is no evidence that jews at that time dressed like that
((this is not a hate comment, more like a full points)) in these series, they describe Jesus, Yashua, Yahosua, in diferent ways, that may be one appearance that they choose for this video, and some details may be true to the religious jews in that time, not nesserary for Jesus because if the kipa ( little hat) was a men made law, and not in the tora Jesus did not use it, or the arrange of his air was a man made law then he didnt use it that way neither. but the point they make is true, by showing Jesus as a Jew. (by the way, sorry for the bad English, greeting from Mexico)
He wasn’t white he was brown. That’s probably what she was talking about
kevfoda The white Jews you see today are converts from 530 ad. The Israelites are the brown ones you see in Israel, the descendants of Abraham issac and Jacob
Dean Reynolds I agree but it’s not biblical that’s why people get upset. The Israelites didn’t have white skin blonde hair and blue eyes like they portray Jesus as, they were brown people like all middle easterners are.
This is the best serie of video ever 💕 I share with all my church here in Brazil, thank you guys!

Give the glory to God. It's not because of who we are but because of who He is. He is the reason why we are saved. 😊

Thank you for the context. Thank you for all the context, actually.
Your inspired work has moved so many obstacles - that I was blind to - off of my path to Christ. I see I’m not the only one.
I thank everyone at the Bible Project. I pray the Lord blesses you and your excellent work.
I love that your illustrations don’t portray the European version of Jesus.
Nate Rivera amazing truth
Yes, realistic depictions of our Lord are too rare, ever since Middle Ages artists confused "Nazarene" with "Nazarite" to come up with the long hair.
Isaiah 53 says Jesus had no attractiveness at all...yet every film about Jesus gets a super-handsome actor to portray him.
I noticed your depiction of Jesus also. Yes, The Europeans white washed and feminized Our Lord.
Handsomeness is relative. Super-handsome Jesus according to our modern standards may have been considered super ugly in his day.
Nate Rivera Meh, I’m okay with people making their own depictions of Jesus that look more like them. It helps make him a more personal figure, which is good in my book.
This is also why European depictions of the manger are made of wood instead of stone or brick.
I just need to write to your channel how deeply and sincerely I appreciate the way you all narrate and illustrate the Word of God. The way you guys do everything is so beautiful and wonderful. God is given so much glory with this channel. Thank you so much for your dedication to demonstrate God’s Word the way you do and I pray and hope that your studies of God’s Word will grow you all deeper and deeper in relationship with Him. Thank you so much for the knowledge you share. It’s truly so life changing. My heart is so filled with God’s love when I watch these videos. Glory to God in the Highest!
Another insightful educational video from TBP! Got my coffee table TBP poster book and my whole family loves it! God Bless TBP!
Kelly Bezz we use our coffee table book for family worship time and watch the read scripture videos...it’s awesome!
Brett Cody that’s wonderful! That’s another great thing about TBP - all of their videos are appropriate for all ages and stimulate discussion and questions in a family environment or small group- however you want to use them. I like seeing the rough drafts of some of the posters too and how they translate into the final work. When reading the summary, I can almost hear Dr. Mackie’s voice and inflection! I’m so glad the Coffee Table Book is Blessing your family as it is mine (really we are all one big family!)! May God continue to Bless you and yours and TBP! ✞
Your videos are so helpful to me because i am studying the Bible.

This Bible Project is AWESOME!!!!
I am using these videos to help my autistic son understand the Bible better. Thank you for this helpful tool.
AMAZING...THE GOSPEL OF GRACE IN PICTURE AND TRUTH. ☺
Lesson learned: Whatever happens in Egypt, stays in Egypt...
It's wonderful how everything is connected; every aspect of the Bible has a purpose.
Hey Bible Project, so far in 2018 I have been taking my youth group through a study of the major characters of the Bible. This week we are talking about Abram and Sarai going to Egypt. As I was doing my study for this week's lesson I got a notification for this video. It fits so perfectly along with what we are talking about that it kinda freaked me out. God's timing is so great. I cannot tell you how invaluable your videos are to my church and for the Kingdom. Keep up the great work.
LETS GO. What an awesome topic - thanks for making this !! I love the artwork.
THE BIBLE IS BRILLIANT! And Jesus is definitely the answer to everything and the fulfillment of everything God promised, and what we could never fulfill.
This is a treasure, thank you so much Bible Project!
My mind is blown. Thank you so much for this! This is a video where you’ll pick up something new every time you watch!
This has implications MANY might not be comfortable with if they actually think about what you said. This is a solid video.
The BibleProject is an answer to prayer 🙏 Thank y'all for all the work you do 🕊️
Thank you for giving my family a way to understand the word of the Lord without having to commit to a dogma or denomination. No judgement, its just easier for the little ones to understand the Bible without the pressure. Thanks, be blessed in Jesus name.
Im 60.. and always looking for new ways to see the BIBLE. I haven't always lived in a rightful manner, and sometimes have hard times trying to spend time reading, and learning.. THANX FOR WHAT YOU DO
The Bible is the most interesting piece of literature in the world, there’s so much to uncover.
I pray to be a faithful berean of the word of God.
This project is soo well done guys!! Keep up the good work!!
Yall boys are bad!!! The way that video just brought settings and times together meant a lot to me. I thank you for these outstanding and easy to follow and understand videos. May God continue to Bless the both of you.🙏🏽
This video is excellent for two reasons 1 about the understanding of the settings of Egypt and 2 I finally got understanding of the number 40 throughout the scriptures. The time of testing. Thank you very much!
The Bible project is God sent. By watching the videos I can understand the Bible much better. Thank you for all you do.
The brilliance you expose about in your video narratives is exceptional.
God has and is using you to reveal Himself to us more.
Reading the Bible is an adventure. God bless.

I am busy working through Exodus and prayed that God would help me understand it better. And two hours later your video came up on my newsfeed 🎉🎊🎉 God is great! Thank you for all the work you guys do!
Tom V thank you! I'm actually using an ESV, what I struggled with was to understand why those specific plagues were used... I didn't understand what they stood for or represented. And even though I'm using a study bible, it didn't give much information on this. Thank you for the advice 🌼
You guys are blowing my mind with info and making the Bible more enjoyable to spend time in! Thank you!
Amazing! Simply amazing! The Bible is sooo intricate and complex. Thanks for this explanation. God bless
You guys are simply awesome!!!! I wasnt aware of the symbolism of Egypt, East and 40 until now. So helpful thank you God bless!

This channel always blows my mind and divulges something amazing do me! I love what you guys do!
may we see importance and intentionality in Your word Lord!
I Praise God for giving such a revelation. Really Holy Spirit has done a astonishing job throughout the Bible... Blessed to have one
Wow God is soooooo patient with us. Thank you so much JESUS!
Can you please make series of the different settings? You guys are so awesome connecting ideas in the bible! This is my first time thinking about how important are the settings!
Charlyn F.L Right? I need to know these! Love seeing the Egypt one pop out in my Bible reading. But what’s the Moab significance?
Yeah, I want to see the one about Bethlehem.... and Babylon & the Wilderness.
@@yellow_daffodil5689 Tim's take on Babylon would be interesting, but off-hand best I can explain it, it is the essence of the Occult as embodied in the worship of man/self in opposition to God (think Tower of Babel in Genesis, Mystery Babylon the Great in Revelation). Daniel and his three friends are forced to choose between compromising their devotion to God to save their lives or refusing to either bow down to a self-exalting idol or pray to the king, and God demonstrates HIs greatness by miraculously delivering them for their faithfulness to Him. Does this make some sense at least?
@@deannakay6607 wow, yes it does
This video was quite fascinating. Something that was glanced over in recent readings of scripture seems to ha ve been brought to light through this video. Very dope!!
Thank you for this great series ❤ God Bless 🙏
This was brilliant! I hadn't though this much about the importance of, and the patterns found in, settings until now. Thanks so much TBP team!
Thank-you for this lesson! This is the best interpretation of the symbolic meaning of Egypt I have seen/hear yet. And it makes total sense - thank-you!

It's a good day when The Bible Project uploads. 😊
U ppl really creating thirst to read the Bible... Thank u.. God bless ur ministry👼
Thanks for sharing and pointing out the 'settings' in the Bible. After watching this episode, I'd say, this is the prove that God is the main author of the entire Bible. It is inspiring and insightful. Please keep on good work!
I really love this. Thank you for making the Bible easier to understand. God bless you!
What’s super cool is seeing God speak through these sorts of patterns in our current age! It’s amazing how God uses time, place, and thematic elements for His glory. It reaffirms our faith and strengthens the biblical narrative (and accredits the authors)! It can also allow us to interpret and understand real world problems, all while pointing us to Christ! ✝️
So good and it’s just the slightest, thinnest layer of what there is to discover! Go deep and have fun exploring His mysteries every day!! Woohoo!!!
Your job explaining the Bible is AMAZING. God bless you.
Wow this video gave me a whole new perspective of reading the Bible. I love what you guys do! 💜

Thanks for your videos and creative approach for us to see the Bible in deeper way! God bless your ministry!!!!
Thank you everything for all you do.
The color transitions in this video were a visual delight! It kept me guessing how the scene would "bleed" out to the next one. And ofc it goes without saying the information packed within it was also illuminating. (Never made that "to the east" association before!)
Sick work man bible project, totally impossible to bring across the meaning of the Bible so clearly but you guys gave it an awesome attempt :)) totally appreciate it
This is my favorite Bible Project video!!!
