Keep in mind that MARIO HIMSELF pronounces his name as "MAH-ree-oh".
I've got a friend who says "mare-io" and it kills me.
I always pronounced it with "Mah". And every since I heard Mario say his own name in the games I roll the R ever so slightly. I always hated hearing "Merry Oh". Because those same people don't do that with Wario or Mars. Imagine "Ware-io Ware" or "Planet Mares". I'd expect the planet to be populated with horses.
The real answer is how Nintendo's Landlord said his name.
I say mah-ree-oh it's how I have always said it. It's normal in England, rarely people say Maaarreio.
I've heard people pronounce it merry-o. which sounds retarded too be honest.
this video touches on advanced linguistics not meant for youtube, but ill give my two cents. the italian pronunciation of mario is phonetically very different from the one you use. as far as i can tell no one in any of the videos, clips, or examples you gave pronounce it like you do.

Martinet is Mario's voice. Mario is the ONLY person who can say his name 100% correctly. You wouldn't tell someone that they aren't pronouncing their own name correctly, right? So Martinet's pronunciation is, for sure, the right one.

I AGREE! It’s fucking ‘’marry-o”. It’s literally how he pronounces his own name yet people still say “mahrio”.
I applaud this attempt, but the nuances of pronunciation require a trained linguist to break out the International Phonetic Association chart. I could hear inconsistencies throughout the video, where three sounds where represented as just two, and the vowels were not properly described. A trained ear (not mine) could probably hear even more. This video just adds to the confusion. However, it was a brave attempt and I’m happy to have experienced it.
I don’t know how to really pronounce it but the way Charles Martinet himself pronounces it sounds right to me so imma pronounce it like he does
