Well...I'd assume at least the banana was avoidable, but that is a pretty bad string of luck
Once I told my friend while we were racing: Welcome to Mario Kart, where you can go from 1rst to 12th place in 5 seconds. Then that's exactly what happened to me xD

The reality setting in when you move from getting all 1sts against the CPU on 150cc to playing against other people online and doing terrible is palpable!

Diman The Hedgehog, you are totally right. I find it hard to defend against red shells. In previous MKs i swear you could dangle your banana behind you and it would cover, but now he throws it. Dont even get me started on the blue shell. I have 0 idea how to stop that.

Sounds painful to dingle dangle your banana behind a gokart and then having people throwing stuff at it! xD
If y'all want to get good at mario kart, it's simple: If you're in the lead just keep your banana/green shell. Use it when a red shell is lobbed at you and they will cancel out. If you're worried about a blue shell, just drop the banana/shell right before picking up an item box. You have a chance to get the item that destroys it and just hang onto it.

William Papsco yeah, I've never had a huge problem with this. I haven't played Deluxe yet, but in the standard one I pretty consistently get first.
In Mario kart double dash, I could get hit by a red shell and lose first place, and I felt like my opponent earned it.
In Mario kart 8, I get first and still feel like the losers are cheating for hitting me so much
Double Dash was perfect. I never felt like the items were unfair, and you could even dodge the red shells if you timed drift boosts correctly.
MK8D, on the other hand, is the most frustrating Mario kart game ever. Playing with my friends and getting hit by a blue shell three times in the same race. At some point it just feels incredibly ridiculous.
The punishment for players in 1st is really only truly frustrating to me in single player mode. I've been trying to unlock the gold kart parts by getting 1st place in all 150cc tracks. I'll complete the first 3 races in first but the 4th race always screws me over. Inches before the finish line I'll get hammered by red shell after red shell after red shell after red shell and literally drop from 1st to last place. This is enough to affect my overall points to drop me to second or third for the cup. It wouldn't be a big deal if this hasn't happened exactly as I specified over two dozens times, not letting me get 1st place in the cup once. I've tried hanging back in second place on purpose but having to intentionally brake to let people pass you isn't fun and doesn't guarantee that'll you'll make it back up to first place. It's gotten to the point where I've said hell with this game and stopped playing it in single player. It's only a party game now.
1. I feel your pain. I like to called this problem "Tapped in the gutter".
2. Mario Kart being only a party game is a problem for games like the ds and wii which the online services have shut down, that or you don't have any friends to play with.
Yeah, I can deal with it in multiplayer because that's just how the game goes, but when in single player and you need to get 1st place 4 times in a row, and you get mobbed by the CPUs at the end of the last race... Just makes you want to scream at the heavens

Phoenix Downer in my experience that only happens every once in a while, so if it did happen I would just do the cup over again and then I would get it.
For me, an issue I had in Mario Kart 7 was when I was playing against the CPU's, I would always stay in first just from how I naturally played. Because of this, all the action happened behind me and at times it was boring.
I swear the CPU's are made to be assholes, like every time I get to the final lap I get bombarded by like every item in the game, sometimes two lightnings one after the other

I wish they had a game mode where every mystery box was a mushroom. Thus allowing for the skill of boosting over turns but making it so friends can actually see who's the best.
I had an idea awhile back of a ghost race where everyone is a ghost and you race people online LIVE with 3 mushroom. Basically your playing time trial but you dont just reset when you mess up. You just have to finish the race... And if you beat your own record, you should be able to save your ghost like a regular time trail.

One thing I notice is that if you fall behind in Mario Kart it's very hard to catch up...as when you fall behind you are now in the middle of a pit of hungry lions that keep tossing red shells, green shells, fireballs, banana peels, etc at you...
With that said, I also notice that if you have the lead it's hard to lose it if there's no red shells or blue shells coming your way (unless you just simply suck and you keep falling off the course or run into walls, etc)
Another great video, by the way i love your hair, also i cant believe you mentioned Burnout 3, i've been playing it so much lately, so many memories and it's the best racing game ever made, it's perfect

Another thing that really frustrates me is when I'm in dead last and really need those good items, but that's when I only get bull crap like triple mushrooms in a course with extremely sharp turns instead of something useful like a bullet bill or a lightning that actually would help me to catch up when I'm half a lap behind the person in front of me
dude i recall this from mk 64. pretty sure this format has been around since mk first came out.
Give first place triple bananas again and make them trail behind the car instead of circle around it to make first place not regret leading when a stampede of red shells are thrown. This would also benefit the players in the middle of the pack since triple bananas are useless when you’re that far off the lead.
You're onto something, Bob. Maybe there can be a setting in Mario Kart 9 where it's simply a race to the finish with no items. Personally, I don't mind the whole items thing as it encourages a bit of strategy to the race, but the option should exist for those who just want to get in first and stay there.
What I do is try my damnedest to get so far in first place that no amount of lightning or blue shells can knock me out the lead. It's really hard to do, though.

I'm surprised they've never (especially by now) added a feature for 'competitive race', which would be separate from 'classic race'.
Basically it should turn off every form of possible handicap. I dunno maybe every single powerup box is simply a green shell, nothing else, no matter what place you're in. All 'catch up' mechanics turned off.
This would result in every race being consistent, the only factors deciding your placement would be skill and strategy, zero luck.
Could be a relatively niche idea, but as we've seen from competitive Smash Bros (where every form of possible handicap is turned off, similar to what I just described), I'm sure there would be a relevant audience that would be interested in such a thing!
I don't know if that's present in any games besides this one, but in Mario kart Wii you can change the rules for item distribution from recommended to random and it gives you something totally random irrespective of placement. I like that

you can use the weird red block things to stop a blue shell now... or hold a shell/banana behind you to protect from red shells, which all helps more skilled players protect from being screwed over... which wasnt mentioned in the video

Great point! I'm going to show this video to my 10 year old son. By the way and I appreciate that you blanked out the cursing with funny sound effects. Don't get me wrong he hears and knows foul language but if I can keep it to a minimum all the better and he'll enjoy the humor of the effects. Any way, earlier this week I encouraged him to play in an online tournament hosted by ING. My son is a good player, he's played Mario Kart on the Wii, Wii U, DS and now on the Switch. Well you are right on! He was in the lead for the first lap and a half then it all hit the fan. He was hit with all sorts of shells and other objects and fell to last place and was very pissed. I gave him a talk about being a good sport and explained that he was probably playing against gaming geeks that play this game all day but this video should help him along. Great videos, be good!
There's this thing when you finally get to be an expert at mario kart all fun is stripped from the game and all it is is fighting with two other people for 1st place in online lobbies with bananas,red shells,and green shells as the only items.

The frustration beat the fun for me. I played it for less than a month and sold it for the same price i bought it (I bought it at 50% and intending to sell it tbh)

I'd like to think I'm pretty good at Mario Kart and it's not too hard for me to take first but man is it difficult to keep.1st place gets punished pretty bad (shout out to Greg for keeping 1st after that beating) and only receiving green shells and coins the majority of the time. Double boxes are king seeing as you are guaranteed something other than a coin and the big horns are great to get a blue shell off ya. Hope to catch a race with ya some time Bob.

The problem I have, is when they expect you to keep in first place with a fast time for all the races in every grand prix. It doesn't make any sense, because Mario Kart discourages mastery. I can't even strategize, since you have to have a consistently fast time (by staying in first place), in order to get the max rating and unlock everything. It just makes me scream, "MAKE UP YOUR MIND!"
I love how generous the point system is. It's great at encouraging cutthroat rubberbanding.

A pro technique I use is sandbag where I stay in low spots for the 2 laps and then in 3rd lap I zoom ahead...though this won’t work all the time but it sure is fun
And another technique I use is front run where I try to get away from the crowd from the start of the race asap this will work almost all times on Mario kart 8 d and I use this as my secondary technique
One thing I don’t do is stay in middle that’s terrible

i think the upside down bell curve is good for people who want to get good, because it makes more of a challenge.
Sure I get hit by red shells and stuff, but not often. I am usually always in first and every physical item I get (not coins) I save in case a ton of items are headed my way. I also know how to trick red or blue shells since 90% of the time (on most maps) they will never go left. I can usually trick red shells into hitting a wall by getting close to it and pulling of a difficult drift. I'm still not the best, but I do great online too and I've had allot of practice
I got so good at one point in mario kart ds (and sometimes 7) when I got hit with a blue shell I was still in first place
You've just got to drive right against the edge and the red shells will miss. Also take different path when the road splits
I feel like they cleaned this up a lot between 7 and 8. I remember getting so pissed, playing MK7, because no matter how well I drove, no matter how much of a lead I had, I would always get taken out at the last second of the race. So far, I've enjoyed every second of MK8, and my 3 year old has too, which is pretty amazing, to entertain that wide of an age range.

I don't mind items in Mario Kart in general.
But when you have to come first to unlock stuff. And you are first all race, get three feet from the finish line, and still finish last due to the infinite barrage of shells.... that shit is annoying.

This game fucks with me so badly. If I get an early lead it usually doesn't last because I get a coin.
If I am in the middle I get hit by 3 red shells and get sent all the way to the end. And even if I am dead last I usually get all the shit items.
Woah the guy in front of me gets a bullet bill and I get a damn mushroom? Really?
Or worse I get a damn Piranha Plant (who fucks me up more than it helps) and I can't get rid of it, them bam I get struck by lightning so I can't even use the stupid star I got from the double item box.

Well, I'm awesome at MK because I practice and practice...I'm not perfect but MK is so darn fun that I just need to try again and again!

The problem is that when playing against CPU then you mostly try to unlock stuff. In MK8D to get all the stars you have to finish 1'st in all races and not just win the cup. And thats the problem since its pretty much you vs. everyone else unlike when playing against friends just for fun and its everybody against everybody.

I am very good at Mario kart you just gotta learn how to block attacks and find a route to take on each lap and always take that route but learning how to drift is the single most important technique to learn.

Hovering around 2nd and third has been around for awhile tho. It's strategy to not dart for first and lay back. Everyone knows that you get certain items depending on your place.
Joe Kaho hovering in the middle is okay on like lap one but any longer and you will just let first place build up there lead too much

just got it today, first kart game since 64, I learned I suck and get trolled by CPU on anything over 100cc
I think MK could be fixed like this:
The red shell,instead of going to a player,it continues on the middle of the road,so players go on the other lane to avoid it.
The blue shell could be replaced with an item like “Slow bomb” that makes the 3 first racers slow down their top speed for 10 seconds.
The only games that have made me rage are mario kart splatoon and smash bros I actually broke my gamepad by accident when I jumped up from my seat when getting hit right at the end of the 3rd lap
The only thing I hate about this game is sometimes it feels like the game takes over control. Especially when I want to take a sudden turn when your at those points with a choice of two paths to take. It feels weird and can't explain it. Just feels like the game controls your character for a few seconds. Oh and getting damn coins with every powerup gets old fast.
What I do is stay in 1st and play defensive and focus karts on speed, drifting and handling so whenever I'm hit I still have a chance to keep my place.
Also I feel like Mario Kart should focus more on skill and not luck. Recent games have been focusing more on skill so whenever I play MK Wii I get annoyed as it's all luck
frustrates me in Mario kart but I can honestly say that it keeps me playing. The unpredictable aspect is appealing to me
I just got this game. I've been playing Mario kart since the NES days. I would say I'm pretty damn good. I'm older now so I don't make as much time for video games. Hence my late arrival to Mario Kart 8. And I must say, it really does punish good players and rewards novice players. It's absolutely frustrating.

I’m trash at this game. I genuinely struggle with 150cc, I am a good racer (by a general standard, I’m okay, but I am NOTHING to the professionals, realizing how much of a gap there is has been a brutally sobering realization for me), but the items ruin me. If you’re using Smart Steering, don’t have divine fortune with the items you get in first place, put the items (not bomb ombs) behind you to save you from most attacks, and not landing every single hypothetical jump boost you’re not winning 150cc. If you’re not using short cuts, you’re not winning 200cc. If you’re not jump boosting, hopping for tighter turns or through off roads, soft drifting, short cutting, and using META everything, you’re NOT going to even rank online. This has been an extremely depressing experience, and I want to love the game, but again, I suck. My strategy has been to create SO MUCH DISTANCE between me and the bots that they rarely try to send items, but that all changes at 150cc.
I hate it when you’re first and doing well, then get Red Shell’d and drop to eighth. -.-

well that why they added the 200cc if you get 1st in 200 cc your mostlikely to be in the top 5 in online play i personally dont like 200cc tough and i think they should allow player to remap the controlle for mario kart ( the acceleration button and the brake buton are unberable to use at the same time if you not used to it it make me want to cry some time
What I loved about the original SNES Mario Kart was that it was brutal. I recall getting international magazines that had the best recorded lap times, and I had a who friend had a better time than that. And the battle mode was even more cut throat, because the maps were so tight and the controls so precise that you could defeat a red shell with pure skill by hugging a wall tightly. Just before the red shell would get you, if it was coming straight from behind you, it would wobble just slightly and clip the edge of the track before it hit you. Little nuances like that have been lost in the big 3d sequels. The tracks just aren't as fast and frantic, and the wide tracks where you can careen all over the place while still staying on the track just don't have the precision of the original. The original always felt like you could shave milliseconds off your best score by getting your bounces and drifting a little tighter. The newer ones seem sloppy by comparison. Ahhh the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia...

Yes of course, but the difference between the 2 games is significant. I can make a lot of unnecessary course corrections in the wide open tracks and have no real effect on my overall time in the latest Mario karts. Whereas a tiny mistake in the original saw your ghost time run away. 3D Mario karts aren't really pure racing games, they are karting games designed for peppering your friends and taking them out. When you play single player, the perception of white knuckle racing is lost. Not so with the original, where the single player time trials held up as a dedicated racer. Just my opinion of course
this game could take a LOT of "inspiration" from CTR where the items actually make sense

mario kart is awesome, aslong i win at least 9 of 10 races in a series i m fine with the mechanics :)
The reason 1st place doesn't get the bullet bill and star power is because then 1st place would go too far ahead and be too op. Mario Kart tries to make skill level more equal so players with less skill can enjoy the game. And if you're out in 1st place with no competition, the race gets boring.

I don't think I ever experienced this curve in Mario Kart 8. and I'm really good. When I play online I usually stay top 2. I'm not trying to brag, i literally suck at all video games but I Mario kart 8 I'm just always up there both online and against all my friends and don't remember ever experiencing "punishment" for getting good. You just have to use your items wisley, and know the tracks well to drift at every opportunity you can, along with using shortcuts, plus picking the kart optionsthat works best for you :)

I have this friend that I'm slightly better than and because they're always right behind me and I get blueshelled they win and think they're better than me. Or they get a red shell while I get a coin.
We all say Mario Kart is crazy and super chaotic, but that chaos is the way the game's balanced. ._.

I really feel like Mario kart 8 is the least bs of all the Mario kart games. You get horns every once in a while to scare off the blue shells and lakitu doesn't take his sweet ass time saving you once you fell off a la MK64
