    Ghibli actually comes from Arabic qiblī and means “southern”. In Italian it’s the name of a wind that blows in the Sahara desert from south towards the Mediterranean Sea.

      @@jollygoodgordon5580 Why is it "cringe" to be interested in other cultures? I was an ESL tutor for years, and specialized in teaching conversational English to Korean women. I now have a small but lovely collection of Korean celadon porcelain, as well as several Korean movies. The film *Chunhyang* is an education in Korean culture in itself. It's also absolutely gorgeously filmed.
      *Chunhyang* was a marvelous jumping-off point for conversations as well. My students were delighted at my interest, and eagerly answered my questions about the story, as well as some of the clothing and events. That seemed to open the door for them to ask about US culture, so we had fantastic times chatting over tea and coffee, with my students sharpening their skills at listening, and especially at wielding our bizarre verbs.
      Now tell me again how eyeroll-inducing my interest in Asian cultures is.

    There was actually a Japanese exchange student that went to my high school in my senior year. Her name was Naho Aoki, so I have known how to properly pronounce that family name for more than 25 years now. Also, I took a Japanese course about three years ago and my professor said I had the best pronunciation and handwriting in the class. Sadly, I have forgotten most of what I learned because I have no opportunity to use it; I need some Japanese friends to help me remember, to learn more, and to retain what I learn through regular use.
    Also, I was a little surprised by the fact Honda wasn't on this list, considering Americans pronounce it wit a short O sound and Nihonjin pronounce it with a long O sound.
    By the way, I usually won't subscribe to someone until I've watched at least three or four of their videos, but you are so fun to watch and listen to, you earned my subscription with just this one video.

    fun fact: spanish and japanese phonetics can be very similar (there are some exceptions of course) so we pronounce words similarly, for example all the vowel sounds (a e i o u) are the same in both languages. So we can pronounce japanese words correctly, although sometimes we missplace the entonation. There's even some words that are the same, like the word for "bread" (pan).
    p.s: loved all the "VERY GOOD" 😂

    • @minnarion
      @minnarion 2 роки тому +6

      I think that's the case for most latin languages. Also, it makes sense that the word for bread is the same in Japanese and Spanish as the former comes from the Portuguese word for bread (pão) which is also why it's spelled in katakana :)

    Thank you so much for going over the correct pronunciation of Ghibli! I can't count how many time I've had to explain why it's not pronounced with a hard "G" like you would if it was a normal Japanese word. I normally don't mind when people use the English/Italian pronunciation, unless they're claiming that's how it's pronounced in Japan.
    Edit: in regards to Studio Ghibli it's a soft "G", when regarding other brands it would be pronounced with a hard "G".

    • @ZarlanTheGreen

      The correct pronunciation IS a hard g. It's the Japanese who mispronounce it …despite the fact that every other instance of the word ghibli, in Japanese sources, is written ギブリ (i.e. giburi …which is the genuinely closest that you can get to an accurate pronunciation, with Japanese pronounciation), so I cannot imagine how Miyazaki managed to get it wrong.

      @@ZarlanTheGreen not sure what sources you're refering to but if you read the studio's logo that is written in katakana above the english logo before the start of EVERY Ghibli movie it's written as ジブリyou are correct that the original pronunciation is with a hard "G" however in regards to the studio Miyazaki decided it should be pronounced with a soft "G" for whatever reason. there might be an interview somewhere that explains why he chose to go with ジブリ instead of ギブリ maybe to distinguish between the studio and the plane it's referencing. Regardless my only pet peeve is people saying Ghibli is a Japanese word when it's not :/

      @@Nerd_Girl_1412 *_Every_* Japanese source that writes ghibli in katakana, writes it as ギブリ. On the contrary, I agreed/confirmed that it is written ジブリ.
      …and that Miyazaki wrote it as ジブリ, is *_an error._* Not an intentional decision by Miyazaki, but an error, as Studio Ghibli have clearly stated. You can look this up anywhere. Of course they still insist on keeping the katakana as ジブリ, regardless, for some reason, but…

    I actually knew how to pronounce Toyota and Nintendo correctly because my second language is Spanish 😂 (I’m Mexican) and in Spanish it’s pronounced exactly the same as in Japanese, granted in Mexico and Latin America in general we tend to pronounce words with their original pronunciation without changing it up unlike here in the states

    • @sharonvizcaino1442
      @sharonvizcaino1442 2 роки тому +2

      The accent is different, though. I think most people I know in Mexico pronounce it Ninténdo, not Níntendo, since no tilde in Spanish would mean the accent is on the second syllable (and it's still a little bit different anyway, since Spanish uses stress and Japanese uses pitch accent). It is definitely closer than the way English speakers pronounce it, though. As for Toyota, from my experience, people pronounce it as Tollóta, since Japanese "yo" isn't really a sound in Spanish (it's much closer to "io"). U's are also slightly different, but unfortunately that sound doesn't exist in English either. Still much easier to pronounce than English, though!

    Good to finally know how Japanese pronounce Ghibli. I thought pronouncing it with J sound was a habit of English speakers because they tend to pronounce G and J the same way. So since it's a Japanese company and in Japanese G is always pronounced as G like in golf, I thought that's the correct way. I didn't know it had to do with an Italian word. Even though that would also dictate that it's pronounced with a G. So Miyazaki just made up this pornounciation?
    I was curious when you said that Toyota originally should've been Toyoda and what the reason was for changing it. To be honest I feel like it's a pretty lame reason and only people that over think it would have a problem with it.
    I don't understand what exactly is different in Nintendo. Is the emphasis on the nin part the big change? I guess English speakers tend to put emphasis on the ten part.
    Also I've noticed how English speakers always say the e at the and of words like you said it in the English pronounciation of anime. It sound like they say it like it has anyother y at the end. Like the word yay but without the first y.... Damn it's hard to talk about pronouncitaion in a language that doesn't really have consistent pronounctiation rules lol
    Going back to the e sound at the and of words. For example,when American people talk about the Junji Ito manga, Tomie it sounds like they say Tomiyay :D
    If this video would be about names too, then you could add Gunpei Yokoi to it, because English speakers often pronounce his name like the English word for gun. Even though I don't think his name has anything to do with it :D I noticed that Gaming Historian said it like that at first. But nowadays he says it correctly. I've mentioned this on one of his videos but I don't know for sure if my comment was the reason he changed it.

      For the Nintendo pronunciation, the major difference isn't necessarily what we would think of as pronunciation. More like the pitch and rhythm. English speakers "sing" the wrong notes and they're off-beat to the way Japanese people do. We have some distinctions like this in English too, like present (noun) and present (verb)

    Once foreign names are put into some other language, you aren't mispronouncing those names in those languages as they are being pronounced with the phonology of those languages, not the original language's phonology. Pronouncing such Japanese names with English phonology when speaking English is correct. It's only incorrect when you say Japanese names in English with Japanese phonology as you are supposed to be saying those words in English, not Japanese.
