Hey guys! I just started boat shopping this month. Remember those Sail Life stickers you were mailing out so many years ago? I think I remember mentioning it in a comment I was saving it to be placed on my boat when I finally go it. Well, when I left the US in 2021 I brought the sticker with me. 😁 So far it's been with me to Mexico, Thailand, and a few other places. Right now it's on shore at the sea of Cortez, we'll see where it goes next.
Sailiing I hope😁
Don't be too disappointed. Me and the missus grew old with that show
You 2 have a wonderful chemistry.
Bazinga! Nicely sung Ava! 🎶 The Barenaked Ladies would be proud.
That look you gave Ava after the “performance” was priceless. The no verbal response said it all. 🤣🤣🤣
hopefully , the genset gets fixed at the states so the A/C can be used .
Always interesting to hear about mosquitoes and No-See-Ums at the anchorages.
An iconic Canadian band wrote the Big Bang song. Great vid.
It’s pronounced “atol” (like the Spanish pronunciation of the A), because it came of the word “atolón” that it’s a geographical accident composed by a ring shaped coralline island growth around a volcano. When the volcano got extinct or collapsed after an eruption the water level rises and consequently the island can grow on the inside and the water formed a lagoon (could be plain or salted water) that connects with the sea on one or more points
I've always said A-TALL, but I'm a landlocked person from the USA. :> Glad to be this early in the comments!
Gotta love the big bang theory. That copper coat is sure holding up good on the boat, it was quite expensive as I remember , but well worth it.
Oh man! There's some great stuff in this video. The atoll was a nice spot to anchor, and the hull scrubbing spot was gorgeous!
Mads, can I just say you have a great set of sails you know...
At the end of your video Ava went, totally, into squirrel-girl mode! L love it?
Flopper stoppers are a great item to have on board. Have a great week ahead
And a bridle line secured from one of the aft cleats onto the anchor rode can turn the hull so the swell isn't on the beam. I don't know why I've never seen this in any UA-cam cruising channel when they're looking for roll solutions at anchor, but I learned it from a Maine waterman and it's super effective for how stupidly simple it is.
@glowingfatedie I used all the time back my sailing days it's 3 orange cones in line to reduce saying action at anchor
@@glowingfatedie Also had learn it from a fellow cruiser but this is also someone that show it: Cadoha Adventures
@@glowingfatedie EP 32: Swell Bridle and sailing cadoha and a couple of others
I love the BBT! And your advantures of course 😂
Big Bang Theory is a great show. Sheldon just cracks me up.
I've been a happy follower of your channel for a few years now. My wife and I have sailed our steel hulled Swedish Ohlson 41 for about 50 years, including to Europe, Africa, N.& S. America. Your anchoring comment about "a few inches of sand over hard coral" struck a chord, as we anchored just west of a small island in the Exumas one night in 1979 with an easterly land breeze, and set our bower (CQR) toward land and our Danforth astern to keep us in place. The danforth was set in exactly the type of bottom you describe (which is common on the Bahamas). The wind clocked around and increased in the night, and by the morning we were experiencing 40 knots from the stern, and large swells. The little danforth never dragged - which is nice as we were less than 100 feet from what became a lee shore. The lesson I learned that night - and never forgotten - was that the much maligned danforth anchor. is incredibly effective in pretty much that one condition (good holding bottom just a few inches over hard material). I now have a larger updated version (Viking) as my primary stern anchor, and although rarely used, it's a wonderful anchor. I'm often reminded of that night in the Bahamas, and how a single night of anchoring can teach a lesson which stays with you for a lifetime.
A danforth never fails but be prepared to “cut” it when it is stuck under a rock or pay for a diver with a crowbar😥
It for sure is worth the extra weight and time to have both a Rocna and a smaller Danforth
Nice underwater footage. Good to see you adding it 🙂 Good job Ava 🙂
I appreciate you cautious approach piloting those waters.
Wonderful, yes both to see you and to be able to see you out here at sea. I sail home my newly purchased boat and do my first overnight sailing single handed with it. AND I was close enough to the coast to get cell service 🇸🇪😄😃💕
I've spent a lot of time SCUBA diving aboard a chartered live-aboard in the Exumas. One of those cuts is named "the washing machine" and is a popular dive site. During the tide, you get pulled through and spun around, it's quite an experience. When you make it back to the Bahamas, be sure to check out Staniel Cay and the swimming pigs nearby. Also, Thunderball Grotto near there is also super cool.
Mads, I see Athena rolling in quite a few of your videos and you've mentioned how much both of you hate it. Have you considered putting your DIY skills to work building a set of flopper stoppers? You have both the spinnaker pole and the whisker pole. It would be easy to rig and they actually work well. Also, you should consider a riding sail. If you rig it on the boom instead of the backstay you can angle the boom to keep you bow to swell when the wind and the swell are not from exactly the same direction.
Your best outro so far! Thanks!
As a Kiwi I say Ah toll, as opposed to AAY toll, but everyone knows what you're talking about. so don't worry, either way gets the message across.
🇬🇧 Geologist as such and being from the Midlands 🧙🏻♂️ I say At-oll Charles Darwin was a Shropshire lad as was his Grandfather Dr Erasmus Darwin ... a founder of the Birmingham Lunar society who met at Soho house... Soho factory..With the other pioneers of Birmingham's industrial revolution.
They met at the time of the full moon to facilitate safer carriage travel going home at night.😉
A toll, aytol, I think they’re both correct and it’s no trouble at all.
Beautiful video. I just think it’s cool that you found something with your metal detector. (So nice to see Mads wearing hans hat.) Love you guys!😎❤️😎❤️😎🥰🥰🥰
Great video!!!! Perfect balance of technical detail and sailing.
Awesome following yall and seeing the side missions :)
That looked like Black Point. I can't believe I missed being there the same time you were by a week.
You did it!
Aw, Mads, the look on your face as Ava did her thing at the end was absolutely priceless I actually did laugh out loud!
p.s. I'm back in Prickly Bay for hurricane season. The rest of the windward islands and central America next season 👍
As a German, I am for the short a (almost shwa-sound) at the beginning which I think is also close to Mads's way of pronouncing things. However, I have no idea what the correct English OR American way to pronounce this kind of thing would be. But if I remember correctly, the Wynns pronounce it also with a short "A".
Congratulations on finding a wire!
Turquoise Waters 👌
Great video
You guys narration is really good.
Check out the structure of atolls. They are usually are hard shells with just the tips above water
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
The water looks amazing
Lots of konch at Hogsty Reef. Need a fishing license from the Bahamas but it was worth it. These "atoll" was one of our favorite stops between Greece and California. And I hope you checked out the light house. The Bahamas are such an awesome place.
Incense can repel mosquitoes. They dislike smoke. I place the sticks so that the incense smoke drifts into the cockpit while lounging
Great video! Storm season is closing in.
I remember watching the first episode of Big Bang Theory and the wife and I said, it won't make it past the first season. About 2 weeks later and we were out with friends and we were all...yea, it is bad...THEN 2 weeks go by and somebody said "We were SO SO SO WRONG". We got hooked.
I ve been to Crooked Island. Great diving
While you're in that area of the Bahamas, be sure to take time to explore Thunderball grotto
Hi , nice video and keep enjoying your selves .
With regard to pronunciation. Given that English is not a first language for either of you, I think you do very well. All the best
Right. Ava is from California.
Rolling at anchor- you might try getting a pair of "Rocker Stoppers" or making via DIY. Essentially, they look like a witch's hat attached to a rope with weight below. When lowered into water from both sides of boat, they provide resistance when pulled upward thru water from a swell, thus reducing the rolling. Some have no moving parts while others have a valve to allow stopper to sink faster awaiting the next upward swell movement. Some sailors hang one off the end of the boom pulled to one side of boat.
I would make haste to a state side hurricane hole. Lest you stay is longer. due to your boat being the next treasure some is looking for
Welcome to the USA. I hope you got to see the NASA theme park while you are at Port Canaveral. When you get to New Smyrna Beach FL you should anchor by the lighthouse in Ponce Inlet and see the Lighthouse Museum there. The keeper's houses and the Fresnel lens display is pretty awesome. It's a nice lighthouse to climb and the view of your boat in the anchorage is pretty nice.
5am 🤔 nope sorry, no idea. 🤣🤣 I always thought atoll over Aatoll
Glorious video 2x👍
Guys, it is pronounced At-oll. So At ryhmes with Bat (furry mammal that sleeps upside down) . OLL ryhmes with Troll (monster that lives under bridges).
I don't know where you are from, but I would love to correct you trying to pronounce words in my language ❤
As a red-blooded Englishman, I fully agree!
@@Drunken.Sailor your language being English I'm guessing? Where are you from?
You could also write it as At Toll.
As a Finn I would state that both ways to pronounce the word atoll are correct, the one is the US pronounciation the other one the UK version.
Guys get a suckshincup to hold on to when cleaning the hull.
Make it so much easier.
Keep an eye out navigating the Bahamas. I did some sailing down there and I there were tons of sandy shoals and many uncharted coral heads. This was in the Exumas area.
If that metal detector can receive different heads, get a wider one. Especially since you're under water and have to fight the water, you're not going full steam detecting. Also, use some flags to mark your path. Like put a flag down, then go some distance from it, and put another flag down and start detecting towards the first flag. Then, when you reach it, move the flag half a swing to the side and detect towards the second flag and repeat. You will have some overlap, but overlap is good. You can use a third or fourth flag to mark out your OG line by leaving those in place. Grid work in metal detecting is the best. There's also the circular method, starting from one central point, but... i don't know if that would work well under water + not sure how safe that would be. Regardless of how you do it, keep your expectations low, because that's when you have the most fun. The first decent find is always going to stick with you.
Now, i'm not an expert on water detecting, but on land, we usually congregate on old paths, because vs crowded places, there's a higher chance of something being there because of the time axis. In water, that might mean near places where established anchoring places (like existing buoys) are. Because the sea floor is BIG, there's a lesser chance of you stumbling on something where an established/crowded area is when compared to that. Have fun!
I sailed in the pacific atolls and often heard "atoll" pronounced as "a-toll."
From what I understand. Atoll - ‘A’tol = British English, ‘Ay’tol = American English. Happy to be corrected!
Hilarious ending 😂
hey friends. it's Ah (is in the the doctor making you say ahh) and toll (as in toll booth) ah-toll. just like you say it at 4:18 :) hope that helps. Cheers from Canada
Liked.
As far as hurricanes in the Bahama's go, you are good for a couple of weeks. But, there are no promises.
You forgot the hunger that the finnish mosquitos have - they bite a chunk out of your shoulder and go chew it on top of a tree ...
Dunno if you do it, but use a kitchen (metal) sponge to freshen up the surface on the anodes. Don't exceed expectations with it, just enough to "give it a shine". They sometimes look clean, but aren't, which of course dampens their performance.
See you👍🏼🥰🇩🇰
and I vote for a short “A"
Yes Hurricanes are real (I was on Cayman for Gilbert and was one of the first people back in the BVI after Irma) but locals don't spend their lives terrified of hurricanes, like tornados, forest fires, bears, mountain lions, sharks, Etc. Your actual chance of being hurt by one is VERY small.
Battlefield 1943 called, that is the map Wake Island! I was right back in the fight for a moment😂
to keep you head to wind theres a trick to make or use a small sail hauled up the back stay like a fishing boats does
At anchor, you're head to wind anyway. The problem is when the swell is not from the same direction as the wind.
I’m from Virginia. I grew up hearing “slap dab” rather than slab dab. I assume the colloquialism is slap… but, being accepting of all. I appreciate your use of the phrase.
PS: I was already “middeladged” when that show became a success😱
Young Sheldon after that. It;s fantastic tv IMO!
See Atol das Rocas, Brazil.
OMG. My GF is watching BBT right now. I can’t get away from that show. 😂SMH
Afaik it is not „a toll“ but an atoll with emphasis on the last syllable.
@-ol. The battery tooks for scrubbing the hull are a challange to keep enough presure on the hull🏴☠
OMG you guys struck the jackpot! Don't keep us hangin.Hhow many millions did that rusty wire sell for?
🥰
Hallo Captain! A small tip about your Money maker. The tune nobbs falls off very easy.
It's A (as in hat), TOL (said like toll).
Atolls outside the Pacific? Lots of atolls in the San Andrés Archipelago, Panama and the largest coral reef in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef in the Honduran Caribbean
You both are funny together.Opposites do attract, as they say.
Hey Guys, I've been following for ages.
I think it is pronounced Ah Tol.
“How to loft” are we going to see a boatbuilder….. ooohh let me not get too excited yet but keep updating us on research via your web links in your browser.
Always thumbs up. Show a bit more sailing on the way to the land plenty if you have the cash. HAHAHA.
Should deposit a coin every dive to guarantee others success and happiness !
Are the Maldives not also Atolls? Then south of there is the British Indian Ocean Territory that has numerous Atolls too.
Mads & Eva Can you tell us How many weeks are you Behind? Mads try wider sweep with metal detector . Mads would Sea Anchor help your Rolling when Anchoring?
I think most people pronounce it Ah (soft a) - toll (as in toll booth), with accent on Ah
Hmm, Mads that's embarrassing. There's attols in many areas outside the Pacific Ocean, like in the Indian Ocean or in the Sea of China. Ooops ;)
What ocean is the Sea of China in?
@@glowingfatedie Seriously ? Seas are not included in oceans.
What mysteries does one metal wire portend? Did it fall from some failed Starship test flight, once being the lost key to success? Or was its destiny more pedestrian in nature and only the reinforcement for some sailor’s loo? I’m sticking with failed spacecraft until someone says differently.
If you're watching Big Bang, be sure to also watch Young Sheldon
It's prounounced "ah-tall." The "a" is soft
Have you thought about getting gyroscopic stabilisation?
Are you guys headed to Newport RI? I hope so.
I am quite sure it is pronounced atlatl, as in the spear throwing device of yore. Wait, what? Atoll? I have no idea at all. My bad. Thanks for the video.
I seem to remember you cleaning the bottom with a surface supplied dive rig when you were in England. Did it die or did you just prefer the tanks.
I was hoping you’d find a solid gold Rolex
Madds, I think I found your next dinghy build project. No need to worry about UV protection for your inflatable, deflating hulls, chapps, but it looks like an inflatable. LOL This is certainly a great DIY project, you'd love to improve on, I'm sure. ua-cam.com/video/r-5FPhxZtZw/v-deo.htmlsi=WAJ3MU20vGHel7o9. This is part one of three videos on this dinghy build project.
a' toll....aˌtôl
Mads is Newport RI in your plans this summer?
Mads, just curious about insurance and hurricanes. Other vloggers are trying to get to Southern caribbean so that theyre out of major hurricane paths and covered by their insurance policies. You're headed in the opposite direction. Any insurance concerns and / or worries about the coming hurricane season?
